Politics / President Buhari’s Corruption War; The Distractions, The Hullabaloos And The Exp by nonnyno(m): 6:51pm On Aug 18, 2015
The issue of Nigeria’s stolen monies has dominated political discourse lately, becoming hot topics in our social media forums. Upon returning from his US trip, the president was said to have been equipped with documents that will assist him recover monies stolen by immediate past administration. The purported document the officials of the white house handed him contained names of individuals who stole from the nation during Jonathan’s regime. Adding to this development, the presidency was said to be in handy with details of banks and countries where the stolen monies are kept. These two developments reaffirmed President Buhari’s determination to fight corruption as he has been demonstrating all along.

Notwithstanding, information about anti-corruption war has been most distorting this period with a lot of unconfirmed and unverifiable reports making headlines in our newsstands. News we receive about stolen funds, probes and loot recovery are often denied or refuted at the last minutes by officials of the presidency, like the two I mentioned above. Information has also been sketchy, scanty and clumsy. The President did not make any statement to follow up on the developments emanating from his US trip. It was allowed to linger for long and had kept our social media buzzing before a statement counteracting it was issued. This has given room for innuendos, widespread speculations and rumor mongering. It is becoming very difficult discerning facts, but it should not be so.

Not until he made it a public knowledge that probes will soon commence which also preceded his constitution of advisory committee, Nigerians were kept in suspense. With a lot of obscurity surrounding the campaign, it was not clear if progress were being made on corruption war. The dramas were unfolding quite alright and Nigerians were put on watch in anticipation of positive results. The ovations and publicity however have become loudest even when the actual job was yet to commence. In spite of the loud applauses greeting the president’s recent moves, in reality it has been cobweb of events.

This is because issue of stolen funds, missing monies, anti-corruption war is all but reoccurring decimal in Nigeria. Every regime claim to fight corruption but it all leads us to nowhere; corruption still flourishes after all said and done as we win only on pages of newspapers. Also, there have always been high profile corruption cases involving government officials, unresolved. Successive governments have not done much to curb corruption. The military and civilian administrations that had sway in power embarked on jamboree of looting. Fela sang about it but so far only late Abacha’s loots are being recovered. This was only possible because the late dictator was a villain of a sort. If not, is he the only leader that stole from the nation?

I do not doubt President Buhari’s capabilities in decimating corruption in Nigeria. It was his campaign promise; the selling point that ascended him to power. It is also the only aspect of governance he can make a big difference and whet the appetites of Nigerians who agitated for change. Aside that, he has nothing to impress Nigerians with as no project and programmes of his will sound new to the ears. However, I am becoming worried about the way this war on corruption is being fought under this dispensation. It has become a great distraction to the nation, taking our minds away from other pressing issues the country is faced with. Gradually, it is drifting us from taking deep thoughts on how to address issues pertaining to our economy, insecurity, crime, religious intolerance, national unity, environmental degradation, youth restiveness, unemployment, redeeming our National image abroad amongst others. God forbid we witness another ebola outbreak but with the way things are going, if it does happen we will fail in containing it promptly this time around.

It is not surprising anyway, since the President is of the APC stock, a party and people well grounded in propagandas. They are at it again, taking their propagandas deep into business of government. The president’s party men and his associates are trying to hijack this genuine war on corruption. They have made it a matter for media grandstand even before the probes start. They have failed to realize that war on corruption is our collective fight and not about any individual or political party. That President Buhari is spearheading the fight does not necessary mean that he is doing the country a favour rather he is performing his duty as a president. While I commend him for taking the bold step and for towing a different path in issue of corruption, I want to quickly remind that his government should not concentrate on probes and fighting corruption alone. There are other serious national issues calling for urgent attention. I mentioned some earlier.

Another ugly side is how individuals are beginning to preempt the president on the issues of corruption, probes and loot recovery. This is abuse of privilege and should not be encouraged. A certain Governor and some close associates of the president have been busy feeding the public with often conflicting and misleading information. These are not official sources to speak on sensitive matters like corruption and probes. The media therefore have no reason dwelling on stories coming from them. The country has agencies on whose purview issue of fighting corruption rests or has the president commissioned someone to do their jobs. Let there be a synergy amongst these agencies and other organs of government involved in this fight. The president cannot fight this war alone and will only succeed if he uses the apparatus set up for this purpose effectively.

It is also important I mention here that war on corruption is not fought on pages of newspapers. Neither is it fought on radio and television screens. In as much as there is need to carry the people, they are equally entitled to truthful reports. The media should be helpful with accurate information and stop being speculative in its reports. We must admit that the media have not been well fed with information about this probe and loot recovery because the campaign itself has not been well coordinated. Although it is important to keep the discussion flowing but the media should not do so by creating stories. They should always wait to hear from the right sources.

I drew my observations largely from the barrage of media reports emanating from the visits the two former Presidents and other prominent Nigeriand paid President Buhari in Aso rock recently. Journalists can be very nosy but publishing stories that does not tally, often credited to anonymous sources will damage their reputations. There are a lot of discrepancies in the way these developments were reported. We heard and read several versions of the same stories. A situation whereby a particular medium will Say A today and come back with a different story the following day is not good for media business. Most of these media have their correspondents stationed at the state house and are privy to official sources of information. It is true that rumours and gossips are clue to news but one has to dig deep to ascertain the veracity of such information and until one does there is no need rushing to press.

Also, it is now a common feature seeing unsubstantiated stories with catchy captions in our national dailies since the president declared war on corruption; 2.3trillion Dollars stolen under Jonathan, Diezani in 2.5million oil deal Scandal, Okonjo Iweala aided Jonathan Loots, NNPC diverted Federal revenue, and US to assist Nigeria in Loot Recovery, Looted monies are kept in Europe, Nigeria lost 150billion Dollars oil revenue due to Corruption in one year, we have names of oil thieves, we have names of those who stole under jonathan, Former Presidential aide caught with 30million dollar loots etc. if we already have all this information what then are we waiting for. Let us save ourselves the headache and recover all these monies. This is the time for brave journalists to prove their onions by helping to uncover some of these loots.

To my own understanding, I would say that the president is still consulting on how to go about the probes and loots recovery. He has been listening to prominent Nigerians. As expected, fighting corruption will be like seeing through murky waters. A lot is on the president’s desk right now due to arguments and criticism his recent moves have sparked. There are genuine concerns being raised and it should be looked into. In a democracy the rule of law is always adhered to as one cannot operate outside the ambit of the law. Where the probe should start is also germane and should be taking very seriously. Targeting a particular individual or regime in the name of probe to me will be an exercise in futility. Recovering only but a paltry portion of the loot while the actual looters are by the side cheering will be a bad job. To sanitize the nation and end the era of impunity and sacred cows, the honourable thing is to reopen and revisit of all pending corrupt cases and probe every administration under which our national funds were looted. These are some of the issues to be critically looked into before any probe can take effect.

There is still a long way to go and the much we can do is to keep our fingers crossed while we pray for the president to succeed in this war. Enough of this fuss until we begin to see results.

I think Fayose has some points and the observations should be looked into. To guarantee the independence and ensure neutrality of the INEC, the woman should go. Jonathan set a good precedence in that aspect and president Buhari, if he is sincere should do same with the electoral body.

Religion / Our Dangerous Prayers, Using Holy Ghost Fire As A Weapon Of Destruction by nonnyno(m): 9:33am On Aug 09, 2015
Last Monday night I was awakened by the unusual screams and shouts of prayers emanating from a nearby compound. I quickly decided to pay attention to the pattern of the prayers which were somehow strange to me, coming from a catholic background. From my apartment I became an uninvited observer since the noise from the prayer had already ruined my precious sleep.

Throughout the prayer session, I noticed that shouts of ‘Holy Ghost Fire’ Fire, Fire and ‘die by fire’ dominated the prayers. This was repulsive and I thought to myself that it is one of the destructive patterns of prayers being propagated by some new generation churches nowadays. Not long ago I shared my thought with a colleague during an argument on this pattern of prayer especially the wrong use of the Holy Ghost Fire which I not only consider destructive but also dangerous. Coincidentally, I am sharing my thought again on this topic a week after the Pentecost was commemorated in our churches.

I was raised in a catholic family although my parents later converted to Assemblies of God which is also a moderate, not too aggressive or radical church. In Catholic Church we have routine pattern of prayer which we follow religiously and are not used to the destructive and offensive pattern of prayer that is somehow becoming in vogue in our churches that even the charismatic in the Catholic Church have copied it. Catholics are usually gentle and humble in prayers. They appeal and plead to God with great reverence and adulation, like a child seeking favour from his father. It is never in their nature to use coercion to obtain favours from God. That is exactly the way I was raised.

Until late 90s and early 2000, this kind of violent prayer pattern was not very rampant. It rather got sway immediately many prayer houses and new generation churches began to spring up in great numbers. In fact things took a new turn in our primordial prayer pattern once the hunger for spiritual powers and miracles stole the minds of Christians. Since then things have not been the same. Church has become a booming business where both the called and the uncalled compete with one another, each trying to outsmart the other. To reach the pinnacle of the business, some men of God have even gone fetish and brought in strategies that should not be ordinarily acceptable in Christianity religion. That is if churches are being regulated.Call it creativity or deception, but these men of God have a way of manipulating the bible and twisting the interpretations of the verses to bamboozle their followers and also suite their style of worship. They get their members spellbound that they forget themselves and start worshipping their pastors and not God. In some cases the pastors tame and hypnotize their followers that they lose their common sense and become incapable of deciphering the good spirit from the bad spirit. Remember that the bible says that every spirit must be put to test but this is no longer adhered to. Christians are gradually losing their inner spiritual eyes as they are busy running after miracle workers and prophets who now decide their fates.

In their uncanny ways, some of these new generation pastors have come up with an aggressive pattern of prayer whereby members shout, scream, wail and issue threats to the devil and their enemies all in the name of prayer. I would not mention names of churches that operate in this way for security reasons but they are numerous, some very notable with large congregation. In these churches, prayer has now assumed a new dimension where we can issue commands and orders to God with boldness. They often refer to book of Matthew 11:12 where it says that the kingdom of God suffers violence and the violent men take it by force.

Now, to my main concern for writing on this topic which I mentioned earlier – that Holy Ghost fire is being abused and misused. Honestly, I cannot say if it is by mistake, lack of knowledge of the bible or ignorance that has made some Christians tend to misconceive the fire of the Holy Spirit for a destructive fire which can be used to attack and destroy the enemies and evil spirits at will. Holy Ghost fire is also being converted to missiles and other weapons of destructions that we now hear of Holy Ghost missile, Holy Ghost thunder, Holy Ghost arrows, Holy Ghost bullet etc in our churches. This is a very dangerous trend and must be addressed. That there is fire in Holy Ghost does not necessarily signify that it is a consuming fire which burns and hurt like the normal flames we know. The fire of the Holy Ghost is rather holy.

furthermore, in my quest to unearth the basis for which some of my fellow Christians had to adopt this style of prayer, I had to research my bible just to be sure that I am not the one that is ignorant of the teachings of Christ as I am not a wonderful bible student. The first thing that came to my mind during that spiritual exercise was where Jesus promised his disciples that he will send them a comforter, the Holy Spirit in John 16:7. The second was the book of Acts 2:1 – 47 where the Holy Spirit manifested himself to the disciples in a tongues of fire during the Pentecost and they started speaking in tongues. Fortunately, the Pentecost week just ended and the teachings during that period revolved mostly on what Christians should do to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. I am not wrong therefore to believe that the Holy Ghost is a helper, a comforter, a guide, a counselor, an advocate. I was more convinced after hearing the message of the pentecost that the Holy Spirit is friendly and not a wicked spirit.

How then did we come about this idea of using the Holy Spirit to destroy and attack the enemies of our faith? Could it be from the book of Hebrew 12:29 where it says that our God is a consuming fire? I searched more and deeper into the bible but did not see any verse where neither Jesus Christ nor the early disciples used the fire of the Holy Spirit to destroy things. It was not even used to cast away demons and the evil spirits rather we were instructed by Jesus in the book of Mark 16:17 to cast demons in his name. The much I know of the Holy Ghost fire is that it descends on believers and endow them with gifts which they will use to serve God. In fact, to the best of my understanding I see the Holy Ghost as a very benevolent, replenishing spirit which every Christian needs for renewal and to be equipped for the ultimate mission of propagating the gospel of Jesus Christ.

interestingly, the most striking aspect of this misnomer is the manner at which brethren respond and echo Holy Ghost fire when prayers are being said. I noticed from all the church programmes I have attended recently, that people participate more in prayers at that point where Holy Ghost fire is mentioned. Everybody suddenly gets involved in the prayer even those that had dozed off and where hitherto absent-minded. They would not mind screaming Holy Ghost fire the whole day provided that it is channeled at destroying and burning their enemies. In some ministries, members of the congregation are often asked to stretch their hands toward a certain direction and names will be mentioned while Holy Ghost fire will be echoed. I am guilty of this also but at some point in my Christian life I decided not to swallow every teaching hook, line and sinker without seeking to know if my bible supports it. After all we all have access to the bible.

My understanding is that our manner of praying is a reflection of our kind of persons. We are living in a wicked world full of evil and destructions. These evils are being perpetrated by people and not spirits. The hearts of men are evil and that is why in our prayers and in churches we unwittingly pour out our heart. It is malicious and vicious to wish our enemies dead to the extent of calling on Holy Ghost fire to come down and burn them to ashes. Some churches have even composed songs asking Holy Ghost fire to pursue and burn their enemies, this is wrong. Is it not the bible that says in the book of Matthew 5 verse 44 that we should love and pray for our enemies?I had once imaging what would be our fate should Holy Spirit hearken to these our malicious prayers and respond by fire, probably we will all be dead. God’s way is different from ours, anyway. He is not vindictive, he is not malicious and he is not destructive. He is a merciful God and that was why Jesus Christ forgave those that crucified him. Therefore as Christians, we must learn to forgive.

It is also disappointing that this pattern of prayer is more peculiar to the black Africans especially my Nigerian Christians as the Europeans who brought Christianity to the shores of Africa do not pray in this manner. Why should we Africans always identify with the negativism. The truth is that we often celebrate the travails of others and consciously or unconsciously we reflect it in our religious practices. I suggest we ponder and reflect on some of our actions as Christians to know if they are in consonance with the teachings of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Let us not be hypocrites that pay lip service and parade about with bible. I also doubt if any denomination can have such pattern of prayer entrenched in its doctrines because the bible still remain the basic tool and book of teachings in Christendom.

Whoever brainwashed us in this regard should realize that as Christians, we are expected to emulate the life and teachings of our lord and savior Jesus Christ. Therefore abusing and misusing the Holy Ghost fire makes our Christian faith to appear tenuous. I call on our religious leaders, clergies and religious bodies to help us correct this negative trend of using Holy Ghost fire as a weapon of destruction. I also wish to suggest that the ugly trend be looked into and our Christian folks reoriented on the basic tenets of the bible. Churches should also review their theology curriculum and hastily do away with any subject that encourages the aggressive and violent use of Holy Ghost fire as a weapon of destruction. Only those who love violence, pray in violent manner but Christianity does not support violence, after all Jesus Christ taught us humility and virtue, and not violence.

My advice to my fellow Christians is that we should stop following the bandwagon and the foolish majority, rather we should be watchful for there are many false prophets in town seeing visions and performing miracles. Do not be deceived by their antics.

interesting story. Enugu pdp and the many intrigues. The crisis in the party is a blessing to the other smaller parties like PDC. While pdp is busy scrambling over the list of candidates, pdc is busy campaigning @ the grassroot level and are gaining more grounds. They are capitalizing on those areas that mr. Chime didn't do well on like the near-death state of the two tertiary institutions, IMT n Esut, insensitivity to wishes of the people especially on choosing their representatives, imposition of candidates, concentration of projects in urban areas only and his elitist leadership style. The party currently has large followership around Nsukka and . Nkanu areas of the state and is likely to win some elective positions in the state if free and fair elections are conducted. The leader of the party, Chimaroke Nnamani still enjoys great loyalty especially from grassroot politicians.

Politics / Re: Who? Is Best Governor South - East Nigeria by nonnyno(m): 5:55am On Nov 05, 2010
I would have given it to Sullivan Chime but he has started disappointing his people. He started well, at least we can see the new look Enugu is wearing today. But how can you say he is the best when he has suddenly turned to a dictator! remember power corrupts and my Governor is intoxicated with power now. Look at the areas he has failed in:
-youth empowerment
-rural development
-Education
-Agriculture
-party relation
-public relations/consultation with people
-lopsidedness in political appointments
You should know that what is tearing up Enugu PDP today is his stubbornness and dictatorial approach to issues that concerns the masses. How can a Governor decide to be tormenting his people by imposing men of questionable characters on them as Legislators, Chairmen, Councillors etc. He started by returning all the Councilors to a second term, an action which is causing turmoil in many communities in the state today because never in the history of Enugu state have Councillors served two tenure.
As if that is not enough, he recently had the boldness to come in the public to inform his elements that all the current House of Assembly members and National Assembly members we be returned to the same positions come 2011. He is too daft to know that some of these men have spent 12years and rest had already stayed for eight years.
the big question then is, are there no more men of goodwill and integrity in Enugu State? thanks to timely intervention of Nwodos in the matter.
Now tell me, is he not a dictator! only God knows what will happen should he be allowed a second tenure. He will be worse than Ebeano, yes. Currently he is with bad company and is been taught the Ebeano doctrines. No wonder the wife ran to adoration ground last Wednesday day for solution! i hope she will hid the advice of the man of God and convey accordingly to the husband. if not, i am afraid my Governor is under a serious spell and only God can help him realize himself.

Politics / Enugu State Songhai, Which Way? Trained Farmers Storm Lion Building by nonnyno(m): 2:08am On Jun 24, 2010
Contrary to public expectation, all seems not to be well with the Enugu state songhai trained farmers that recently returned from the Agricultural centre in Porto-Novo. This revelation was made known Wednesday when the trained farmers numbering about 43 stormed the state's government house, Enugu, claiming that they were on invitation to have audience with the Governor.
The trained farmers who arrived in trickles said they received text messages about the meeting in the same manner they were communicated to on the outset of the programme. The sms which came through an MTN number,
2348161124632 reads, "SONGHAI: governor ve approved d payment of ur post training allowance. come 2 govt house 4 collectn$audiance wit governor. wed 23/6/10 10am. wear songhai vest$camp"
They were however disappointed to found that they have been hoaxed by the message as there were no such plans nor any formal arrangement for their meeting with his Excellency. On discovering this, the trained farmers in a move to attract the sympathy of the state's Chief Executive organised themselves strategically close to the Governor's office but were however dismissed by the security personnels on duty.
The spokesperson of the group blamed the situation on communication gap between them and the people in-charge of the programme. He said," Since may 7th, they just abandoned us. no information on the direction of the programme. we were just left without proper coordination. The farming season is about to end, still we have not heard anything. It is only on radio, television and in newspapers that we hear them saying thatwe have started work but you can see it is not true."
The farmers while appreciating the efforts of his Excellency, Governor Sullivan Chime in transforming the state expressed their readiness to work towards achieving the administration's cardinal points, especially as it concerns food security and sustainable agriculture. They therefore called on the state government to expedite action on the songhai project.
