The September 18, 2026 announcement has understandably raised questions among Jehovah’s Witnesses and others: “Does this mean Jehovah’s Witnesses now accept blood transfusions?”

The short answer is: No—not whole-blood transfusions. But there has been a significant change concerning the four primary components of blood: red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets. The Governing Body announced that accepting these components from another person’s blood is now a matter of personal conscience.

What about the Bible’s command to abstain from blood?

This is an important question. The Bible says that Jehovah told Noah: “Only flesh with its life—its blood—you must not eat.” Later, the Israelites were commanded not to eat blood, and the Christian congregation was instructed to “keep abstaining...from blood.” —Genesis 9:4; Leviticus 17:10-14; Acts 15:28, 29.

Jehovah’s Witnesses continue to understand these scriptures as requiring Christians to respect the sacredness of blood and to abstain from consuming blood.

However, the new 2026 clarification concerns how certain medical treatments involving blood components are handled as a matter of individual conscience. The Governing Body has explained that the Bible does not specifically discuss the medical use of these four components, and therefore each Christian must make his or her own decision before Jehovah.

So what exactly changed?

Previously, Jehovah’s Witnesses were taught not to accept the four primary components of another person's blood.
