The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos office, on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, seized a total of 29 exotic cars during a raid on the office of a Lagos-based car dealer, Astrax Auto Shop.



The raid followed intelligence report received by the Commission on the activities of the operators of the auto shop, who are said to be a syndicate of organized Internet fraudsters.



Investigation revealed that the syndicate, which specializes in Business Emails Compromise, BEC, in the United States of America, USA, usually moves proceeds of its alleged illicit business to a nominated bank account owned by their mules in the U.S.



The syndicate members allegedly launder the proceeds through money order, which they use to purchase cars in American auctions and ship same to Nigeria for sale.

The EFCC had earlier arrested one of the syndicate members, Olusegun Micheal Adeyemi.



In his statement to the EFCC, Adeyemi confirmed one Tayo Onilogbo Yusuf as the Managing Director of Astrax Autos and Automobile.



The cars recovered from the syndicate include: four Toyota Corolla; seven Toyota Camry; two Toyota Highlander; two Toyota Venza; two Range Rover; one Ford SUV; three Mercedes Benz; one Toyota 4runner; one Toyota Sienna; four Honda Accord; one Toyota Sequoia and one Kia car.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, November 19, 2018, opened its case against a former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, who is being prosecuted for an alleged N2.2bn fraud, before Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Fayose was arraigned alongside his company, Spotless Investment Limited, on October 22, 2018 on an 11-count charge bordering on fraud and money laundering to the tune of N2.2bn.

The former governor is facing trial in connection with N1.299bn and $5.3m out of the N4.65bn slush funds allegedly shared by the Office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, through a former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro.

Fayose pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him and was granted bail in the sum of N50m with one surety in like sum.

The Judge had adjourned to Monday, November 19, 2018 for the commencement of trial. .

In the course of the sitting, a prosecution witness, Lawrence Akande, told the court that one Abiodun Agbele informed him sometime in June 2014 that he had about N1.2 billion cash lodgement to make in Akure,Ondo State.

Akande, an employee of Zenith Bank Plc in charge of South West comprising Ogun, Oyo and Osun States, further told the court that he subsequently received a call from the first defendant in respect of the same issue earlier discussed with him by Agbele. .

"Since the lodgement was in Akure, I had to call my colleague there to follow up on it. This is all I know about it, " he added. .

When asked if he knew about the company, Spotless Investment Limited, Akande, who was led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, stated that it was one of his bank's customers at the Dugbe branch.

When he was shown the account opening document of Spotless Nigeria Limited, De Privateer Limited and Still Earth Limited as well as account document of the first defendant, the witness confirmed the documents.

A prosecution witness, Ekene Charles, in the trial of Patrick Akpobolokemi, a former Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, who is being prosecuted for an alleged N687, 294, 680.00 fraud, on Monday, November 5, 2018, told Justice Raliatu Adebiyi of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos how he once kept about $2m in his house for Akpobolokemi.

Akpobolokemi was re-arraigned today, alongside Ezekiel Bala Agaba, a former Executive Director, Maritime Safety and Shipping Development, and Vincent Udoye, a former Director, Maritime Safety and Seafarers Standard, on an amended 12-count charge bordering on stealing to the tune of N687,294,680.00.

The money, belonging to NIMASA, had been released for the implementation of Voluntary International Maritime Organisation Member State Audit Scheme (VIMSAS)."

One of the counts reads: "That you, Patrick Ziadeke Akpobolokemi, Captain Ezekiel Bala Agaba and

Vincent Udoye , between the 30th day of October, 2014 and the 6th day of May, 2015 in Lagos within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court with a dishonest intent converted to your own use the sum of N346, 844, 680.00 (Three Hundred and Forty Six Million, Eight Hundred and Forty Four Thousand, Six Hundred and Eighty Naira) only property of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) released to you for the implementation of Voluntary International Maritime Organisation Member State Audit Scheme (VIMSAS)."

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

In view of their pleas, the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, urged the court to allow him to present his witness, Charles, a Senior Administrative Offcer with NIMASA, in the matter. .

Giving his testimony, Charles, who worked as Personal Assistant to Agaba, revealed to the court that Akpobolokemi, in 2014, set up a Committee on VIMSAS and made Agaba the Chairman of the Committee.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal office, on Monday, November 5, 2018, arraigned one Prophet Cletus Ilongwo, Founder, Power ofThe Holy Spirit Evangelical Ministry, Lagosbefore Justice S.O. Solebo of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State on an 11-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of N59, 760, 000 (Fifty-Nine Million, Seven Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira) only.


The complainant, Obinna Ezenwaka, a former employee of Fidelity Bank Plc, alleged that he was introduced to the defendant's church in 2015 in his efforts to find a solution to what he described as a "spiritual problem".



Illongwo, upon knowing the status of the complainant, was said to have mentioned a business, which he claimed would benefit both of them as well as the church.



He was also said to have lured Ezenwaka to buy a property located at Diamond Estate, Festac Town, Lagos State worth N59, 760,000, with the assurance that they would resell it to a Chinese company at the cost of N150million.



However, Illongwo allegedly reneged on his promise after receiving the money, which Ezenwaka claimed was generated from accounts of various customers of the bank. .



Ezenwaka, who also alleged that Illongwo diverted the money to his personal use, claimed that he was dismissed from the bank over the issue.



The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.



In view of his plea, the prosecution counsel, A. Yerima , asked for a trial date and prayed the court to remand the defendant in prison custody.



The defence counsel sought bail on behalf of his client.



However, the Judge refused to hear the bail application at today's proceedings. .

After listening to both counsels, Justice Solebo remanded the defendant in prison custody and adjourned to November 14, 2018 for hearing of the bail application and November 19, 2018 for commencement of trial.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, arraigned Mariam Eyitayo and Bethrand Johnson, on November 5, 2018, before Justice Peter Affen of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, sitting in Maitama, on an 11-count charge, bordering on forgery, conspiracy and obtaining by false pretence, to the tune of N12 million.



They were arraigned along with three companies: Hamchid Nigeria Limited, Royal Reality and Investment Limited, and Rapid Technoslim and Investment Limited.



Trouble started for the defendants when the EFCC received a petition, dated July 14, 2016, from Darison Samuel Jatau, alleging that he paid them N12 million for the sale of two million barrels of crude oil in Accra, Ghana and one hundred and twenty million barrels of Bonny Light Crude Oil, at Bonny terminal, Rivers State, only for him to find out he had been duped.



One of the counts reads: “That you Mariam Eyitayo, Bethrand Johnson, Samuel Melia (at large), Bature Musa (at large), Hamchid Nigeria Limited, Royal Reality and Investment Limited, and Rapid Technoslim and Investment Limited, sometimes between 4th May, 2015 at Abuja, in the Abuja Judicial Division of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, with intent to defraud, obtained the gross sum of N12,000,000 (Twelve million naira), from one Darison Samuel Jatau via Price Sale Oil and Gas Limited, with Corporate Account No. 3233003782 domiciled with Ecobank Plc under the false pretence that the sum represents payment for the sale of 2,000,000 barrels of crude oil in Accra-Ghana and 120,000,000 barrels of Bonny Light Crude Oil (BLCO) at Bonny terminal, Rivers State, which you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act”. They pleaded “not guilty” to the charge preferred against them.



In view of their pleas, the prosecuting counsel, Benjamin Lawal Manji, prayed the court for a trial date and for the defendants to be remanded in prison custody.
