The outgoing Turkish ambassador to Nigeria, Mustafa Pulat, has said Turkey did not stop the son of a former Chief Justice of Nigeria who crossed the Turkish border to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria terrorists in Syria in February, 2015 because there was no information on the suspect. Pulat explained that the suspected jihadist was issued a visa because he had strong credentials and references. The envoy who said this while responding to questions from journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, explained that the Turkish mission in Nigeria extended the necessary cooperation to security agencies when approached over suspicions that the former CJN’s son had gone to join terrorists in Syria. Pulat, however, added that there is an ongoing international cooperation to stop other foreigners who may want to join the ISIS jihadists, noting that electronic optical control system had been installed at the borders to track smugglers and prospective militants. He said, “Turkey doesn’t know potential militants but relies on signals from the concerned countries to take action against potential militants. Security agencies approached the embassy on the Nigerian that went to Syria and we extended the necessary cooperation to them. “The Nigerian was given visa because he came with strong credentials and references and there was no information on him, so he was issued the tourist visa, but we are cooperating with security agencies on the matter. We couldn’t track foreigners going to Syria (to join ISIS) because Turkey is a large country with wide borders.” Pulat, who has ended his tenure in Nigeria, stated that the ideology behind radicalism and terrorism needed to be understood in order to uproot the phenomenon. Meanwhile, the Isreali Ambassador, Mr. Uriel Palti, has said diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Israel is on the increase, noting that the two countries are collaborating in the areas of security, and agriculture, among other things. Palti who said this at a dinner marking the 67th Independence Anniversary celebration of the State of Israel in Abuja, explained that a total of 75,000 pilgrims from Nigeria visit his country every year, a figure higher than pilgrims from the United States. According to him, since arriving Nigeria for over two years, he has discovered “a fascinating country, with never a dull moment.” He extended Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s congratulations to Nigeria on the successful conduct of the 2015 general elections and handed over a letter of commendation from Netanyahu to former President Goodluck Jonathan through the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, John Kennedy Okada http://www.punchng.com/news/why-we-didnt-stop-nigerian-joining-isis-turkish-envoy/ |

A new study by computer researchers at the University of Cambridge has revealed that wiping out valuable information from a used Android phone is not a guarantee that the phone is totally clean and the next user will not have access to such information. The study warned that if you’re determined to sell your old phone, there’s no way to be sure your data is completely gone, adding that even if you do a factory reset on the Android device, it does not erase everything, and sometimes, it does not even come close. This means, your text messages, emails, pictures and Facebook key have the chances of still being on the phone, even if the memory is wiped out. CNNMoney reports that the researchers blamed the situation on Google, which makes the Android software that runs all these phones. But the phone makers are also at fault, because of bad design and terribly slow upgrades and software updates, “the researchers revealed to CNNMoney. The researchers said out of the 21 phones made by Google (GOOGL, Tech30), HTC, LG, Motorola (MSI) and Samsung (SSNLF), that were tested by the researchers, text messages, Google account credentials and conversations on messaging apps were recovered. “80 percent of the emails sent by the device remain in the device. Also, the special app “tokens” that let you access your Facebook (FB, Tech30) and other social media accounts remained on the device. And sometimes, devices don’t properly wipe the special part of your phone that stores all your pictures and videos,” the study added. Most affected devices include the HTC One, HTC Sensation XE, Motorola Razr I, Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Galaxy S2, Samsung Galaxy S Plus and others. The researchers said the Google Nexus 4 performed the best — but it still had issues. Each phone had a different set of problems. For example, the HTC One didn’t wipe its internal SD card (where pictures are stored) by erasing it through the phone’s “settings” section, even though that’s what HTC says you should do. Instead, you have to go through the “recovery” section. The used smartphone market presently account for about 630 million globally out of a projected two billion smartphones in 2016 ending. According to eMarketer, 2015 will witness over 1.91 billion smartphone users across the globe, a figure that will increase another 12.6% to near 2.16 billion in 2016. That's all 4 Likes |

Umuahia, the Abia State capital, was agog on Monday evening following information that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the result being paraded by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as being that of Abia Central District. Daily Sun gathered that Gov Theodore Orji was roundly beaten at the poll including in his polling unit, ward and local government by the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Ahamdi Emmanuel Nweke, but that PDP in connivance some Independent National Electoral (INEC) officials allegedly manipulated the result in favour of the governor. It was also gathered that following complaints lodged at the INEC headquarters, Abuja, a three-man committee was set up to look into the allegation of result manipulation. “Although the committee’s report has not been made public, but a source revealed the APGA candidate won the election and members are taking their findings back to the INEC headquarters. When news of the development filtered into town, the capital city went agog with residents saying that at last, the man they voted for, would represent them in the Senate. A prominent Umuahia chief, who hails from the same area with Gov Orji, was said to have held an elaborate party to celebrate the development. Addressing newsmen, Chief Nweke said there was no time he had doubt about his ability to defeat Gov Orji at the poll, stating that his non-performance in office made victory easier for him. Nweke said it was not only that he defeated Orji, but that he beat him at his (governor’s) polling unit, which, according to him, meant his kinsmen rejected him and that he also defeated the governor at the wife’s polling unit. He said: “If I could beat the governor at his polling unit and that of his wife, all in Umuahia, which means total rejection by his kinsmen, where else could he get the votes that will make him to defeat me? Could it be from my own ward and local government? It’s impossible. “How could people have voted for APGA and they are writing a different result? That’s why I like what INEC at the headquarters is doing; it will restore people’s confidence in the system. “T.A Orji should emulate President Goodluck Jonathan and concede defeat so that peace will reign in the area. If President Jonathan with all the powers at his beck could concede defeat, why shouldn’t T.A Orji?” While thanking the outgoing President for his statesmanship by not allowing the blood of innocent Nigerians to be shed in the pursuit of self-satisfaction and urge for power, he called on President Jonathan to call to order one of his ministers, who he said had been using the military and other agencies of government to rig elections in the state and also intimidating opposition party members. He also called on the chairman of INEC, Prof Attahiru Jega and other stakeholders to ensure credible polls on Saturday, alleging that they have obtained reports on the plot by the PDP to hire thugs from Abala Ibeme in Obingwa LGA and Rivers State to unleash mayhem on Abians in the nine local government areas of Ngwaland, set the famous Ariaria International Market ablaze as well as cause confusion among voters on the day of the election. He also alleged of an ongoing thumbprinting of fake ballot papers in an undisclosed location in Ngwaland, plans to rig the election among other hidden agenda including the planned mass arrest of APGA senior officials a few days to the governorship poll. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=113429 33 Likes 6 Shares |

Returning Officer for Abia North Senatorial District in the March 28 poll, Associate Professor Ihekweaba Chukwugoziem of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, near Umuahia, has disassociated himself from any manipulated result in the senatorial election in the area. Chukwugoziem, who swore to an affidavit at the Federal High Court, Umuahia, stated that as the returning officer for Abia North, he never announced anybody as the winner of the election due to irregularities discovered in many of the results that came from the local government areas. He averred that based on the irregularities, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Abia State set up a committee, which uncovered irregularities in the results submitted from the local government areas. He stated: “Up and until the evening of April 1, 2015, the anomalies and irregularities were still being unearthed and so, none of the candidates could be returned as the winner of the election, as the committee had not concluded the exercise and collation of the results not yet done. “I have not collated the results and have not declared any of the candidates winner and have not returned any of them as the winner of the election, in view of the issues that are yet to be resolved.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=113162 |
