1. WEMBLEY – $1.2 BILLION If you’ve ever been to the New Wembley Stadium, you’ll know it’s a fact that the moment you step inside the “main arena”, you get goosebumps just by looking at the sheer size of the entire stadium from the inside. Well, if someone pays $1.2 billion for a stadium, it better make people get goosebumps right? Nevertheless, the New Wembley Stadium still has a long way to go if it wants to have a rich tradition and history just like its grandfather. But it’s a fact that the New Wembley Stadium is the world’s best stadium and has been given as “an elite stadium” by none other than UEFA.
2. ESTADIO NACIONAL MANE GARRINCHA – $900 MILLION Location: DF, Brazil Cost: $900 Million The Estadio Nacional Mane Stadium is not only the second most expensive stadium in the world; it’s also the second largest stadium in Brazil as well and has a capacity of more than 73,000. It cost the Brazilian government to spend more than $900 million from their bank to make it one of the best stadiums in the world (however, it’s not recognised by UEFA as one of the world’s elite stadium). In 2013, the stadium had undergone some renovations to increase its intake capacity during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
3. CAPE TOWN STADIUM – $600 MILLION The Cape Town Stadium is perhaps the only stadium known in this list to have gone downsizing its intake capacity! From what was supposed to be a stadium which could accommodate 64,000 people in 2009 had gone to become a stadium of only a capacity of 55,000. Yet, South African government had to shell out $600 million from their piggy bank, and that too at a time when the whole world was in an economic crisis. Needless to say, people of South Africa weren’t really pleased with that decision. This stadium was particularly built to cater some matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
4. THE EMIRATES STADIUM- $570 MILION The Emirates Stadium is England’s second most expensive stadium. The £390 million from Emirates Airlines would act as the prime financial source for Arsenal to cope up with the economic pressure of building such a massive stadium. Yet, for some reason, Arsenal haven’t really enjoyed that amount of success in Emirates Stadium when compared to their times at Highbury. It was this financial burden that led Arsenal to sell some of their best players such as Robin Van Persie, Cesc Fabregas and Gael Clichy. However, in terms of intake, they aren’t really the biggest in England (just over 60,000). But at $570 million, it is the 4th most expensive stadium of the world.
5. AVIVA STADIUM- $570 MILLION The Aviva Stadium is located at Dublin, Ireland and is the home to the Irish football team and their National Rugby team as well. Widely known as the most expensive stadium in Ireland and the 5th most expensive football stadium in the world, the AVIVA stadium went through renovations around 7 years from now in 2009 and it was actually demolished to make it into a better stadium with world class amenities and after taking $570 million to make it, the AVIVA stadium is one of the major landmark of Dublin and truth be told, there is none other stadium as good as the AVIVA stadium in Ireland.
6. SANTIAGO BERNABÉU- $550 MILLION The Santiago Bernabeu is perhaps one of the most expensive football stadium in Spain and is also a UEFA Elite stadium as well. It recently announced plans to increase the capacity of the stadium to 85,000 and will cost a total of $550 million for the same purpose. It is also one of those few stadiums in the world with the richest history. It is the home for the most successful team in the world- Real Madrid and the stadium has also hosted many major games for Spain as well, and serves as the home stadium to the nation. It comes at the 6th spot in our countdown to the most expensive stadium in the world.
10. FNB Stadium – $440 MILLION The FNB stadium is not only one of the most expensive stadiums in the world, but is also one of the top 5 largest stadiums as well. Many might know this stadium as the World Cup stadium because the 2010 FIFA World Cup was the main reason behind its inception and has costed the South African government nearly $440 million. Located in Soweto, South Africa, the FNB stadium is also known as the Soccer City in many parts of the world and has a capacity of almost 95,000 people. However, the South African government did have a tough time in having to complete such 3 major stadiums within a span of 4 years. MOSES MABHIDA STADIUM – $450 MILLION Yet another expensive stadium in South Africa (and we have a feeling that there are many more yet to come in this list) is the Moses Mabhida Stadium which cost nearly $450 million tax payer’s money and is the only stadium to be named after a former Secretary General of the South African Communist Party- Moses Mabhida. It has an original capacity of around 54,000 but was increased temporarily to 62,700 for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and it also has the ability to accommodate till 80,000 people as well during events such as the Olympic Games. 8. ALLIANZ ARENA- $470 MILLION Allianz Arena is also one of the most successful football stadium in the world and is the home to the German footballing heacyweight- Bayern Munich. The Allianz Arena stadium was well known when it decided to host the 2006 World Cup games and has a capacity that slightly crosses the 75,000 mark. It also hosted the UEFA 2012 Champions League final and at $470 million money spent on making it, it is the only stadium in the world which has the ability to change the colors of the exterior, which is usually based on the home and the away team jerseys of a football match. It is the 8th most expensive football stadium in the world. 7. ARENA DE SAO PAULO- $500 MILLION The Arena De Sao Paulo is one of the most expensive stadium in Brazil that had gone through some minor renovations to make it fit for the 2014 FIFA World Cup audience. Although it didn’t host major matches, it did play a vital role in hosting a few of the group stage matches as well and has an intake capacity of just 46,000 people. However, the Brazilian people did have to dedicate $500 million from their taxes to come up with such a massive stadium. The architecture is fabulous and is truly fit for hosting world cup matches.
