Pope Francis is due to set off on Tuesday evening for his first trip to Thailand and Japan. After his three-day visit to Thailand, he is due to deliver a message against the use of nuclear weapons in the Japanese cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The U.S. dropped atomic bombs on the two cities during World War II, razing them and killing tens of thousands of people. In Japan, the pontiff is also expected to meet survivors of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster that followed a powerful earthquake and tsunami. Francis is only the second pope, after John Paul II, to visit the two Asian countries as Catholics are a tiny minority in both Buddhist countries. Francis is scheduled to return to Rome on Nov. 26. Late last year, a major change was announced by one of Nigeria’s leading Pentecostal movement, the Living Faith Church, popularly known as Winners Chapel. Pastor Isaac Oyedepo, the second son of charismatic preacher, Bishop David Oyedepo was seconded as the resident pastor of the Maryland, United States branch of the Church. The church, located on 4380 Forbes Blvd, Lanham, Maryland, is one of the most prosperous branches of the evangelical ministry outside the headquarters in Otta, Ogun State, Nigeria. It was officially inaugurated in November 2008 and ever since has been growing while Isaac, as the new resident pastor, has continued to carry on the liberation mandate. Isaac who was ordained in May 2007 by popular American preacher, Pastor Kenneth Copeland, alongside his elder brother, David Oyedepo Jnr, has occupied various positions in the church until his present posting. The son of the famous bishop, who tied the knot in 2010 with Ayomitide Omogbadegun, was until recently Pastor-in-charge of the Winners Chapel International in South Africa. About three years ago, David Oyedepo (Jnr), took over as the Resident Pastor of Faith Tabernacle, Headquarters of the Living Faith Church Worldwide in Otta. Before his elevation as the shepherd of the 100,000-seat assembly, David (Jnr) was formerly the Resident Pastor of Winners Chapel London and also the Regional Pastor for the European network of Churches. And with his two sons already pastoring some of the strategic branches of the church, critics are already insinuating that Oyedepo is grooming his sons to take over from him the full control of the megachurch that has other multi-billion naira business interests spanning manufacturing, petrol stations, bakeries, water purification factories, three universities, restaurants, supermarkets and real estate. Acting on intelligence, the Nigeria Customs Service, Murtala Mohammed International Airport Command, has intercepted two consignments of frozen foods like pork, turkey, meat and other perishable items on Sunday and Monday. The first consignment was intercepted on a South African Airways flight from Johannesburg through the tarmac operatives of the command. The second consignment was abandoned at Gate 13 of the airport by the importers. The two consignments had the total duty paid value of N68.850m. The Customs Area Comptroller, MMIA, Mr Wale Adeniyi, explained that officers of the command discovered the items after insisting on inspecting the consignments. He said, “Though the airway bill described the goods as fresh vegetables but they were frozen food items, which are contraband in the country. It became obvious that the importer through his agents had prepared pre-release documentation purporting the import to be fresh vegetables with the sole intention to evade the import prohibition order.” Adeniyi declared that the seizures were warning to importers of contraband goods into the country, reiterating that the command would make it extremely difficult for such persons to use the airport to perpetuate their criminal activities.
