PoliticsInsurgency: Protesters Storm French Embassy In Lagos by obavalen(op): 5:46pm On Dec 09, 2019
Some protesters stormed the French embassy in Lagos on Monday, urging President Emmanuel Macron to support Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

The protesters were led to the French consulate by a civil society organisation, Africa Liberation Vanguard.

They lamented the recent attack in Cameroon, where Boko Haram abducted 18 people.

According to them, Nigeria needs the support of Macron and other world presidents to combat terrorism.

This, they said, could be done through the investigation and blockage of sources selling arms to the terrorists.

CrimeFighting Against Rape Is Difficult - Governor Fayemi's Wife by obavalen(op): 7:07pm On Dec 05, 2019
The wife of Ekiti governor, Mrs Bisi Fayemi, says the campaign against rape is difficult due to the culture of impunity among the perpetrators.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fayemi made this known on Thursday at a rally organised against rape by stakeholders.

The event was part of the 16-day programme to campaign against the scourge.

“ The fact that those perpetrating the act and other evils like child trafficking and all forms of molestation against women have not been punished makes the fight against the social ill looks unattainable,” she said.

NAN reports that the participants marched from Fajuyi Park through Okeyinmi to Okeyinmi junction where Fayemi addressed stakeholders on the need to take concerted actions to end rape.

She expressed worry over the increasing cases of rape of minors in Ekiti, particularly by ” those who are old enough to be grandfathers.”
The governor’s wife urged the victims to speak up and refuse to die in silence to make rape easier to overcome.

“There are laws in the land that had been promulgated against violence against women, child trafficking and rape . Some people have been convicted through these laws .

“Don’t keep cases of violence against you secret , speak up. Try and learn how to dignify yourself.

” Make sure your families are in peace, don’t die in silence

“This is why we are creating more awareness across the 16 local government areas of the state.

” Even many of those who ought to have information about rape are not having them.

“As I stand here, I am already tired of marching against rape. It has been difficult to overcome the scourge because of culture of impunity in Nigeria.

” The perpetrators were being emboldened because they suffered no punishment over their wrongdoings.

“We are doing this awareness to let our people understand that there is a penalty for rape.

” We have reviewed the Gender Based Violence Prohibition Law, it has been amended and it now carries life sentence instead of five years jail term.

“We are going to put a number on WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook that victims can contact while in distress to bail them out when they suffer any violence,” she said.

PoliticsHate Speech Bill Impressive – US Embassy Official by obavalen(op): 10:05am On Dec 04, 2019
Political Officer of the Embassy of the United States of America, Jerry Howard, on Tuesday described the Hate Speech bill before the National Assembly as an “impressive” piece of legislation needed to address issues of discrimination, hostility and violence in Nigeria.

Howard stated this during a meeting with the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate and sponsor of the Hate Speech Bill, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, at the National Assembly, Abuja.

According to the United States Embassy official, the visit was intended to engage the sponsor of the Hate Speech Bill and to seek an understanding into the proposed legislation under consideration by the Senate.

Following explanations by Senator Sabi Abdullahi on the bill, Mr. Howard described the response of the media as “misleading” and “hysterical” of the contents of the bill and what it actually seeks to achieve.

He, therefore, advised the sponsor of the bill to engage and educate Non-Governmental Organizations and Civil Society Organizations in the country on its proposed contents so as to muster support for the bill.

Speaking on the decision of the US Embassy to engage the National Assembly on the Hate Speech Bill, Howard said, “We want Nigeria to succeed and we think a prerequisite for Nigeria’s success is successful democracy.

“For democracy to succeed, the people must have a house, the people must have a place where their representatives can argue and complain, come up with new ideas and come up with solutions to guide the executive branch and lead the country forward.”
He commended the lawmaker for the level of work and research carried out on the bill.

“I’m very impressed with the research you’ve done on the bill. The media has had a field day with this, really.

“You’ve thought it through. I was depending on the media for my education, and it was very misleading. You’ve done your research and it is very interesting.

“But you have a difficult job selling this to the NGOs, CSOs. You need to talk to them. You’ll need to talk to Civil Society Organizations, you need to educate them. You’ve educated me,” Howard said after Senator Abdullahi explained the contents of the bill.

Earlier, speaking on why he decided to introduce the bill, the lawmaker said, “Part of the reasons why violence takes place is attributable to discriminatory practices.

“It is discrimination that creates the socio-political imbalance that you see leading to a group feeling shortchanged and marginalised.

“Discrimination is also another very serious matter why I sponsored the bill. This bill basically is about preventing discrimination, and prohibiting people who incite violence,” he explained.

CrimeWoman Left With Deformed Buttocks After Botched Bum Implants Rotated Inside Her by obavalen(op): 2:48pm On Dec 03, 2019
A woman desperate for a shapely bottom was left in agony and with a deformed bum after her implants rotated inside of her, according to Dailymail.

Jabrena, from Georgia in the US, had implants put in to try and get away from her 'beanpole' physique, but the results were not what she wanted.

Instead, she was left with two huge and obvious implants which produced a clear outline underneath her skin.

And, she told surgeons on a new episode of E! TV show, Botched, the implants were so badly fitted they rotated inside her body, making them misshapen and painful.

The Botched surgeons managed to repair the mishap and give Jabrena the bum she had always wanted.

'Two weeks after surgery,' Jabrena said, 'the swelling started to kind of go down and you could see the implant kind of on the side. It was like a crease.

'But, about a month-and-a-half later, the implant flipped.'

She said the implants went on to flip round like this four to five times a week.

The Botched surgeons, Dr Terry Dubrow and Dr Paul Nassif, said the implants had been put in a pocket – the space created inside the flesh for them – which was too large.

Because of this 'implant malposition', they wouldn't stay in place and were moving around inside her body – something Jabrena described as 'very uncomfortable'.

Jabrena's original surgeon offered to try to fix her posterior for $4,000 (£3,000) but she decided to seek a second opinion on the popular TV show.

'I just want a little, cute, nice toot butt and not this big honk that I have back here,' she said.

Dr Dubrow described the situation as a 'butt dilemma' and said: 'We certainly want to help you, but we don't want to restore you to a place that you hate.'

He added: 'Not only are the implants in a pocket that's way too big, but they're in the wrong plane in the pocket, allowing them to flip around too easily.

'The problem is, if I just take the implants out, she'll have so much sagging skin and no projection that I'll be trading one big problem for another even bigger problem.'

Dr Dubrow removed Jabrena's implants and fluid from her buttocks and replaced them with a smaller, better-shaped posterior.

'Before my surgery, I had a saggy butt and implants were flipping,' Jabrena said.

'But now, thanks to Dr Dubrow, I am finally free of my honk butt and now I finally have that cute toot butt that I've always wanted.'

Technology MarketChina Set To Introduce Mandatory Face Scan For All Phone Users by obavalen(op): 7:32pm On Dec 01, 2019
China is set to introduce mandatory face scans for every phone user as a requirement for registering new mobile phone services by telecom operators.

China seek to verify the identities of the country’s hundreds of millions of internet users with the introduction of this mandatory face scan announced in September and due to take effect Sunday, according to the BBC.
China’s industry and information technology ministry issued a notice on “safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of citizens online”, which laid out rules for enforcing real-name registration.

The notice said telecom operators should use “artificial intelligence and other technical means” to verify people’s identities when they take a new phone number.

A China Unicom customer service representative told AFP that the December 1 “portrait matching” requirement means customers registering for a new phone number may have to record themselves turning their head and blinking.

“In next steps, our ministry will continue to…increase supervision and inspection…and strictly promote the management of real-name registration for phone users,” said the September notice.

China already uses facial recognition technology to survey its population.

It is a world leader in such technologies but its intensifying use across the country in recent years has sparked debate. Social media users are sharing a mix of support and worry over the facial verification notice.

The Chairman, Transition Administration, Mubi South Local Government of Adamawa, Ahmadu Dahiru, said suspected kidnappers killed two policemen and abducted seven people in the area.

In a chat with newsmen Saturday, Dahiru said the incident occurred along Mubi-Gyela Road last Tuesday.

“Kidnappers have been terrorising our communities on a daily basis and they kidnap people at will, both in broad daylight and at night.

“They killed two policemen who were on patrol along Mubi–Gyela road last Tuesday. Three days ago they abducted five people in Kwaja and two in Sauda village,” Dahiru said.

He said that the kidnappers were hiding on top of some hills along the Nigeria–Cameroon border, adding that the communities had lost millions of naira to kidnappers in ransoms.

A spokesman for the Adamawa State Police Command, DSP Sulaiman Nguruje, confirmed the incident, saying a team of security operatives had been deployed to comb the area.

He appealed to the people of the state to report any suspicious and strange character to the nearest security outpost.

PoliticsSenate Calls For Computerization Of Oil Sector by obavalen(op): 8:47am On Nov 29, 2019
The Senate on Thursday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to initiate the process of computerising the nation’s oil sector.

This, according to the Senate, is to curb the multifaceted challenges associated with the oil and gas production, transportation, and sales business in the country.

It also mandated its joint committee on petroleum up stream, downstream and gas resources to convene a public hearing to ascertain the quantity of oil and gas produced daily and the quality control mechanism engaged by NNPC.

Other task for the committee is to determine the amount of waste of petroleum products through pilfering, pipeline vandalisation and leakages, and international best practices of computerized oil and gas business management, including pipeline protection and quantity and quality control.

The resolutions were reached after the Senate adopted a motion sponsored by Senator George Sekibo (PDP, Rivers East) and 29 others on the “need to install computerized oil facilities management gadgets for Nigerian crude oil businesses.”

Presenting the motion, Sekibo said it was of concern that while other countries in the same business venture have gone digital for the past 50 years, Nigeria is still using analogue technology in doing its petroleum technology.

“We still use human beings (4 persons) to monitor a kilometer of pipeline, giving undue opportunities to oil pilfered, giving rise to unnecessary pipeline explosion, causing deaths and unquantifiable loss of products and other human valuables,” he said.

He regretted that Nigeria with over 61 years in oil business could not give account of total amount of products produced, sold, wasted and lost through pilfering, or pipeline vandalization.

He said petroleum products business should have been given priority attention in terms of protection, expansion, quantity and total quality control especially with oil as the mainstay of Nigeria’s income and foreign reserves.

He said Nigeria is the biggest oil producer in Africa with maximum capacity of of about 2.5 million per barrel, but noted that, “this meager quantity is always under attack through pipeline vandalism and oil platform theft which has reduced quantity produced”.

Sekibo said, “one key area of fighting corruption is through effective management of resource itself, that is the source of revenue just as this administration emphasizes on the fight against revenue pilfering by the operators”.

“The computerization of oil management system assist in the pipeline protection, trigger off alarms when any section of the pipeline is disturbed for whatever reason. The system detects if there is a weak section, captures suspected intruders on the pipeline, and are equipped with fire fighting gadgets in the event of fire outbreak”.
