He was on the grounds of Al-Shifa hospital alongside four other journalists at the time Israel bombed them. All five journalists work for Al Jazeera and israel bombed them together.

It was an assassination. The journalist and his colleagues were not on any battlefield unless you want to refer to the hospital as a battlefield.
