. Did you ever wonder why it is that children have laughter in their eyes?
. Because they have no fear. And having no fear, they rest in the loving arms of the ECK. Their trust in the ECK is like the swings they ride. They trust the upward exhilarating ride and experience freedom. An adult may fear that the chains might break, that the swing isn't strong enough to support their weight, or that they might lose their hold and fall. But children never think of that. They think only of the ride.
. Perhaps what makes adults tentative is that they once fell off the swing. Pain will either make one tentative or make one Love SUGMAD even more. A choice is always to be made after times of great pain. And this choice will determine which way the individual will choose to walk for a time - the road of love, or fear.
. I suffered some beatings in prison and discovered something about pain - every man has a pain threshold. When this threshold is breached, the will is broken. The will to resist the forces of the world, but also to resist the inner forces of the ECK. I learned that one can reach this threshold of giving up the will without going through the process of pain by surrendering to the ECK. You see, pain is merely friction caused by the tense grasp and resistance of the will, the ego, to keep Soul from accepting the inevitable - the will of SUGMAD. And our daily lives, one can see that pain is a reflection of desires. Life is simple. One can either desire the things of the outer life and constantly live in a state of pain or potential pain, or be like those kids on the swings - not wanting, but living in the heart of the SUGMAD, living for love and freedom, for the ride.
. By not holding inwardly to the things of material world, you can give freely of yourself to life. It's difficult to give anything of yourself if you're busy clinging to things that you feel are important. What could be more important than giving 100 percent of yourself at each moment? If the goal is God-Realization, then the only way to reach it is to emulate It - by giving love - for what does the Divine Creator create, other than love itself?
. Everyday life is nothing more than a series of problems to be solved. There's no escaping them. What makes the differences between men is that those on the lower end of the survival scale let the outer conditions and problem move and toss their inner states about. Emotionally, they're always in a turmoil, seemingly never able to gain control of their lives. Mentally, they can't control which thoughts enter their minds. But the experienced Soul is like the child that lets the SUGMAD speak through them via the ECK. They are the patient ones, because they know and trust that the ECK will reveal all of life's answers. They know that love exists all about them, for they have the eyes and ears to partake of it.

. . BREAKING FREE
.
. In a way, the lower worlds are a prison, walled up by time, space, matter, and energy, from which Soul has to break free. Once It had the opportunity to have the knowledge of God - like the glass of water close at hand - but It did not appreciate the gift. So God sent Soul into the lower worlds for experience.
. The experience is not always pleasant, and some people tend to personalize the obstacles that confront Soul. In ECK we refer to the negative force, and as a matter of convenience we call it the Kal Force. In Christianity the negative force is generally known as Satan or the devil. Many people never gain a real understanding of why God would allow Satan to exist if God were so much powerful. All they know is, when anything goes wrong, lay it on Satan.
. If we could walk through life without any obstacles, Soul would learn absolutely nothing. The obstacles that occur along the way are to give Soul experience; they are responsible for the purification and maturity of Soul. The experiences are necessary for Soul to become a Co-worker with God. This is Its final purpose.

. It reminded me of the people who come to the spiritual path of ECK, looking for truth. They stay for a season, and then there seems to be a drought. Ten out of twelve may feel they didn't get the water they needed. But since one person did, and possibly two, it is a climate in which some can thrive.
. . YOUR SPIRITUAL SEASON
.

. Every season there are those who come to ECK, stay for a while, then say, in effect, "It's not for me; it's not my time yet, it's not my season." Others are still weighing things. For one reason or another, they can't decide whether they should stay and thrive, or wait for another season.
. People tend to project their own religious beliefs onto Eckankar, so I want to make this clear: Comparing people with the ten trees that died is not meant to imply that those who don't thrive in Eckankar are spiritually dead or lost. This is not true. Soul cannot be lost; therefore, It cannot be saved. But It can be liberated.

. . ECK TERMINOLOGY
.
. We in ECK have a trinity, if you will, and it goes like this.
. First there is the Sugmad, which is our term for God. Then there is the ECK, the Voice of God, more commonly known as the Holy Spirit or Divine Spirit, and sometimes referred to as the Holy Ghost, Divine Comforter, Paraclete, and so on.
. The ECK has two aspects, and these are the mainstay of the teachings. They are known as Sound and Light. The ECK, the Voice of God, is heard as Sound and seen as Light.

. . WHAT IS THE MAHANTA?
.
. Then we have the Mahanta. The best way to explain the Mahanta is as a personalized version of the Sound and Light. He works as the Outer and the Inner Master. He brings the message of ECK to the outer world through the written and spoken word. He also works with people inwardly in the dream state, during Soul Travel, and in other ways.
. It is a bit difficult to explain the Mahanta to people who are not familiar with the Eckankar teachings. This is why we put so much stock in experience. ECK is the path of experience. Once you have the experience, then you have a reason to believe and, if you choose, to go forward in the life of ECK. But I don't ask you to go forward; that's up to you.
. To give a more specific definition, the Mahanta is the Inner Master and the Living ECK Master is the Outer Master. The Mahanta, the Living ECK Master also operates on each of the inner planes. On the Astral Plane, for instance, he has a body which corresponds to the properties of that plane. Therefore, he is as real to those who live on the Astral Plane as he is to those who live here on the Physical Plane.
. But even there, as on every plane in the lower worlds, there is the inner, unseen part which is the Mahanta. On every plane in the lower worlds, the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master works and operates to lift Soul to Its heritage of God Consciousness.

. . Reincarnation

. You're like a hamster going around and around in a wheel. This wheel is called the wheel of reincarnation. Life after life you can come back trying to solve the mystery, wondering how to love God, then how to love yourself.
. The answer to that mystery is called spiritual freedom. And the way to spiritual freedom is simply to sing HU with love. That is where you begin.
. That's the doorway to a new life, a life of love.

. . OPEN SLOWLY
.
. The Spiritual Exercises of ECK are a self discipline. If you are interested in doing them, you begin to open yourself to the eternal wisdom, the divine consciousness that you are. This is a first step.
. It would not be wise, at any time, to open up instantly to the high awareness of God Consciousness. Whether an individual believes it or not, the shock would be too much.
. Sometimes we have problems with even little changes. When we travel to another country, for instance, certain customs or phrases can cause a real cultural shock. Places where the light switch has to be pushed down to turn a light on, instead of up as we are accustomed to doing in the United States, can be confusing at first. An Australian visiting in America would be in for an interesting experience if he asked for a lift. Americans, who don't know it as an elevator, would have no idea what he meant.
. The point is, if one were to open up to God all at once, the experience would be shattering.

The secret and unknown name of God was first given light by the ECK Masters - that which we call HU, the beginning and ending of all.
. The Supreme has been called various names in different languages, but it is known to those who recognize the real wisdom as HU, the name of the nameless one. The word HU is the Spirit of all sounds and of all words, and is hidden under them all as the Spirit of Soul. It does not belong to any language; no language can help belonging to it. This alone is the true name of God, a name that no people and no religion can claim as their own. This word is not only uttered by human beings but it is repeated by animals and birds. All things and beings exclaim this name of the Lord, for every activity of life expresses distinctly this very sound. This is the word mentioned in the Bible as existing before light came into this world: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
. The word, the avenue of Spirit, is the real liberation for anyone. The word HU was the first manifestation of the Divine Creator, and the rest of creation, including the ethers and other elements, were created by the sound of HU. The Spirit current, HU, was the prime mover and the first impulse that came from the Deity and also the first cause of motion, color, and form.

. SUBJECTIVE AND OBJECTIVE EXPERIENCE
.
. Soul came from the high spiritual planes into the lower worlds. The lower worlds include the Physical Plane as well as the Astral, Causal, Mental, and Etheric planes. The Astral Plane is the plane of emotions on the subjective side. On the objective side, certain parts of it are known as the area of ghosts, flying saucers, and things of this nature.
. The subjective side of the Causal Plane is memory. It is an area of your mind that retains all the events of the past.
. Beyond is the Mental Plane, the area of the mind that works in the present. Unlike the remembering faculty, this is the active area that you work from to make plans, analyze, and solve problems as they arise in the present time.
. . BEING SHOWN THE PAST
.
. Then comes the Etheric Plane, which is the unconscious, or subconscious, area. It is the high part of the mind that houses unconscious attitudes, some of which were acquired through karmic experiences in the past lives. This often accounts for why we have certain talents or why we are instinctively drawn to one person and repelled by another.
. At a certain stage in our spiritual unfoldment we may be shown, through dreams or Soul Travel, a past-life experience that explains a present love, hate, or fear. There is a particular reason, for instance, why some people have a fear of heights. Fear has many faces. Each face has a specialized reason. Usually - though not always - it is based on something that happened in a past life.

. GETTING A GLASS OF WATER
.
. A principle in good storytelling is to establish a goal at the beginning of the story, then have the main character go through a struggle to reach it. As an example, let's suppose the main character is me. I'm onstage giving a talk. Suddenly I get very thirsty, and my goal is to drink some water. If all I have to do is pick up the glass of water conveniently placed on the table next to me, we have no story.
. So let's make the struggle more challenging. I'm giving a talk, I'm very thirsty, and my goal is to drink some water. I reach for the glass that's usually placed on the table next to me, but it's not there. Someone forgot to put it there when the stage was being set up.
. I'm really thirsty, I mention to the audience.
. "There's some water at the back of the auditorium," someone yells. "You're welcome to it." My throat is too dry to continue without something to drink. But I figure I can keep talking while I walk to the back of the hall to get a glass of water.
. I leave the stage and take about ten steps up the aisle. The microphone jerks out of my hand. I hadn't realised the cord was so short. Now I've got another problem: If I want the water, I have to stop the talk long enough to go to the back of the hall and return to the stage. But I'm really thirsty, so I leave the microphone and head for the water.
. As I walk up the aisle, someone from the audience comes up and says, "I'd like to ask you a question. You're handy right now, so I think this is as good a time as any.
. Now there are two obstacles between me and the water: The person trying to ask his question as we walk, and the audience sitting around waiting for me to come back.
. I start walking faster because I want to get my water and get back onstage - and my shoe comes off. I don't want anyone to know, I certainly don't want to walk all the way to back of the room with my shoe off. But I can't get it on without bending down and using both hands, which I don't want to do. Third problem.
. Farther along, I trip over a chair and fall. Someone reaches out to help me up and accidentally pulls my jacket off. By the time I finally make it to the back of the room and take a drink, I think to myself, This is the best glass of water I have ever tasted. It has a completely different flavour than if it had been sitting handily on the table beside me. The difference is in the experience I gained in the struggle to reach my goal. This is what our life is about - experience.

. . . EXPLORING
.
. People sometimes stay with the religion of their youth just because getting out is too uncomfortable. If all of your relatives are members of a certain faith, it's more or less expected of you to do the same. It just wouldn't do for you to suddenly change religions; you would be made to feel that you had destroyed the social structure of your family. This is strong pressure. It keeps many people from seeking truth.
. Those in less rigid family groups are able to explore. One family member tries this, another tries that, another tries nothing at all, and they all get along. But families with a very rigid structure can impose strong rules to dictate what each member must believe and how he must conduct himself in order not to be ostracized. And in the midst of all these settings, we try to find our way in life.

. SOUL IS UNIQUE
.
. There are a number of recognized religions in the world. But in truth, there are as many religions in the world as there are people. Soul is unique, an individual being. No two Souls are alike. No two people have exactly the same experiences. Therefore, no two people have exactly the same outlook on life.
.
. . A RELIGION THAT RESPONDS TO SOUL
.
. Those with similar outlook often come together in loosely or tightly knit groups. These are labeled religions. Within each group is a central core of people who follow its teachings from cradle to grave. Others, travelers on the boundaries of the established beliefs, are just passing through. They haven't found the teaching that responds to their own spiritual needs.
. How do they know that a religion doesn't respond? They aren't always able to put it into words because their reasons may not seem logical. Yet they know they are not satisfied with what they have.

. WHAT DO I HAVE TO LEARN?
.
. The Mahanta, the Living ECK Master realizes even when the chela is kicking and struggling in the cocoon of his own troubles that this struggle is good for him. The individual can work out of it, if he will just keep trying. The Law of Life provides the way to higher consciousness as surely as the moth is given a way out of the cocoon.
. You must always remember this. When hardships come, don't automatically ask God to deliver you from them. Perhaps it would be wiser to ask: What do I have to learn before I am delivered from this problem? Then direct your attention and creativity toward the spiritual lesson to be learned as you try to get out of your cocoon. In doing this, you develop the sublime beauty of Soul.

. THE STRUGGLE OF AN EMPEROR MOTH
.
. A biologist found the cocoon of an emperor moth and took it to his lab for study. What a wonderful opportunity to watch it come out and unfold into a slender creature with beautiful wings, he thought. It sat on his lab table for quite a while. Finally the cocoon began to tremble as the moth made its efforts to come out into the world.
. The scientist noticed that the cocoon was shaped like a bottle, wide at the bottom but very narrow at the top. The top was surrounded by a concretelike substance. The scientist thought there was no way the moth would make it through that hard material.
. He watched the cocoon for a while, growing more and more impatient. Finally he decided to help the moth out. He would make it a little easier for the moth to get into the world. Using tiny pair of scissors, he carefully cut through the concretelike rim at the top of the cocoon. The moth popped out almost instantly.
. The biologist waited for the moth to spread its beautiful wings and show its pretty colors. But nothing happened. The moth was misshapen, with a huge body and very tiny wings. He watched it walk around slowly, unable to lift itself off the table. Eventually it died, never having flown.
. The scientist began to read about the emperor moth, trying to figure out what had happened. He found that other biologist had made the same mistake he had. They too had tried to ease the moth's difficult entry into the world by cutting the lip of the cocoon. But they had discovered the purpose for the cocoon being wide at the bottom with narrow neck and a very tight top.
. As the moth forces itself through the narrow neck of the cocoon, it must streamline its body. The fluids in its body are squeezed into the wings. This process makes the wings large and the body small. When it finally emerges into the world, the emperor moth is a creature unsurpassed in beauty.
. The biologist realized that he had actually done the moth a disservice by sparing it what he considered unnecessary hardship. Deprived of its natural birthing process, the moth had emerged a misshapen creature, incapable of fulfilling its potential.
. It might seem like an apparent contradiction that the emperor moth must go through such a slow, intense struggle to get out of its cocoon in order to be born into the world as a beautiful creature.
. Quite often the ECKists approach the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master to complain about the hardships in their life. 'Why is my life so difficult?" They'll ask. "Why can't you take this burden away from me?" The problems they cite generally fall under three major categories: Health, finances, and love life. If the problem isn't resolved quickly enough for them, they'll ask, "Haven't you any power?"
. They don't realize that an intervention at the wrong time, or too soon, can create a misshapen form not properly prepared to reach the high worlds of God, the Sugmad.

. . INNER AND OUTER MASTER
.
. Someone observed that in my talks, I was very careful to separate the Dream Master from the Outer Master. It seemed to him almost schizophrenic.
. Many people not in ECK do not understand that the Inner Master and the Outer Master are really of the same origin. The same ECK Current, the same flow, operates them both. I break it down for ease of understanding
. . WHAT YOU'RE LEARNING IN ECK
.
. The Dream Master wants to teach you how to begin to create a better life for yourself, both here and in the inner worlds. Because, when we leave this world, we will still continue our exploration of all creation.
. The inner planes are as real as the world out here. They are populated with individuals who are on missions, just as you are here. The second, third, and fourth heavens are filled with people who are still trying to find the way to God. They too are engaged in one activity or another, whether a profession or a field of art. They too are gaining experience so that they may become better and more compassionate instruments for the Holy Spirit and the Sugmad.
. This life provides the experiences needed to become the very best - not in a mechanical, mental way, but spiritually. In the process, you may become very good at your profession or some other facet of life, but what you are really doing is learning to open your heart to love.

. .Are You Ready
.
. I cannot force people into a direction they don't want to go. If they don't want to go that way, they just won't go. Yet, I feel a certain responsibility when someone writes to me and says, "I'm getting nowhere. I'm not making any progress.
. Sometimes it's just as well that they aren't going anywhere in the dream state, because they aren't ready. If you move too fast, before you're ready, it can be an upsetting experience.
. For some people, it's like trying to skydive. They may have the desire to do it, but the first few times they attempt to jump out of the plane, they freeze up. What if the parachute doesn't open? For the time being, they feel much safer on land.
. Not everybody is prepared for an experience like the inner skydive. It's too far removed from what they are used to doing. You have to build up to these things.

. Many people, not acquainted with the simplicity of ECK, mock the teachings in favor of methods that seem more sophisticated but essentially are very shallow. I constantly look for some way to get through to you, the dreamer, and especially to those of you who are having a difficult time with your dream studies.
. I always come back to the definition of the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master as a Wayshower. He is not a way-pusher or a way-dragger who kicks and shoves you through the inner worlds. The Wayshower is, quite simply, someone who shows the way.
. He can show each of you your own home to God. He can guide you through the inner worlds, pointing out where it is safe to go and where is not so safe to go. But he can be a Wayshower only to those who recognize him and listen to his instructions for working in the dream state.

. A TEACHER FOR EVERY STATE OF
. CONSCIOUSNESS

. A person of another faith will likely have a bond with the spiritual leader of his own faith, and that is as it should be. God has created all religions and all spiritual leaders to fit a certain place in the lives of certain people. No spiritual leader is going to be right for everyone. I don't say I am.
. Each person has to decide whether or not any other person is going to be their spiritual tutor. That is not something that any human law can decree. That doesn't work in the spiritual teachings.
. God has given a teacher for every state of consciousness.
. Sometimes this teacher is not a religion. The teacher can be your boss at work. Or this individual may be your mate. Divine Spirit, the ECK, will bring the words of wisdom that you need for your spiritual unfoldment through someone very close to you. It can come through the words or hug of a child. It can come through the cry of a baby. It can come through the love of your pet, your dog or cat, as it comes up to you too greet you when you come home from work.
. We in human state of consciousness are sometimes too protective of what ways God can our cannot show love to Soul. We think well, Good isn't going to show love through my dog, because my dog has fleas. Or not through my cat, because my cat has worms.

. Fear makes believers of men when it becomes overwhelming.
. Guilt is fear. It is an external device of the lower worlds. When an action is done that you know is wrong for yourself and others, the inner voice tells you so. Guilt occurs when you open yourself to the willing critics of the wrong done. This is unnecessary, for the inner knows what payment is to be extracted. There is no shame or guilt involved, just compensation without emotion or ridicule. The opinions of the outer world have no place or importance here. But the guilt of the outer world will try to make you pay for the debt as long as it can. There is no logic to it, as it is a form of negative indulgence. Until the individual has his eyes and ears opened by the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master via the ECK, he will be a slave.
. "There is but one day to live and rectify life's wrongful situations and to escape the net of karma. That is to live and to do all things in the name of the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master. By this, I do not mean that one heaps his dirty actions and attitude upon the Master to clean up, so one can go skipping away free from responsibility!
. It means that the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master is the inner and outer guide. When you come to a decision and you are not sure how to handle it, ask the Mahanta on the inner, what is the course I should pursue in this situation? If you cannot decipher the answer, you can ask yourself, What would the Living ECK Master do in a similar situation?
. "The Mahanta is always giving directions-provided you ask and have the attunement to listen. The Inner Master resides within your heart, always giving directions, never wrong. It is our interpretations to these directions that causes misunderstandings. Life itself will confirm or reveal the correct answer.
. "This play of life, thousands of years distant, is not foreign to present-day man, for you see the exploitation of guilt through fears occurs today in more numerous ways than before, and all for the benefit of those in power.
. "You alone have the power to free yourself of guilt by placing your life in the hands of the Mahanta. But ah, I detect some resistance to this statement? Then think on this: By placing your life in the hands of the teacher, the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master, you place your welfare in the hands of the highest consciousness in existence - higher than you could imagine- for this is the direct representative of the true creator, the SUGMAD."

.. . Introduction

. When you travel the road to God, you venture into uncharted territory. Sometimes a crossroads will appear: Which direction do you take? Decisions made in the smallest parts of your life can affect the success of your journey.
. How do you decide? Is there anyone who has been there before and can answer your questions?
. The sincere seeker of truth often finds that his real questions go without an answer and his inner experiences with the Light and Sound of God are not explained. Where can he find someone who has already traveled the road to God- and come back to tell about it?
. Harold Klemp is one such person. He is a modern day prophet.
. Key to the ECK teachings is the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master. He indeed acts as both the Outer and Inner Master for ECK students. The prophet of Eckankar, he is given respect but is not worshiped. He teaches the sacred name of God, HU. When sung just few minutes each day, HU will lift you spiritually into the Light and Sound of God - to the ECK (Holy Spirit). This easy spiritual exercise and others will purify you. You are then able to accept the full love of God in this very lifetime.
. Sri Harold Klemp is the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master today.

. Dag Hammarskjöld, once UN secretary - general, made an acute observation. " We are not permitted to choose the frame of our destiny," he said. "But what we put into it is ours."
. Now what is that if not a distinction between fate and free will? Fate is the baggage one carries from birth into this life, but free will is the divine creativity he employs to make his load lighter. It also determines why some people are happy and thrive in conditions that throw lesser sorts into fits of wretchedness and grief.
. Your state of consciousness governs your satisfaction or unhappiness with life. It's on your shoulders. It is up to you and you alone, and no other.
. So what will it be - fruit juice, vinegar, or tea for thee?
. What quality lifts Soul above the five passions of lust, anger, greed, vanity, and too much attachment to material things? What can lift you above this pollution that covers earth and its affairs like a shroud?
. Of course, it is love. Divine Love.

. Whatever comes along in your life, it's good to remember that it's always a gift from the Holy Spirit, to strengthen you. There will be days when you seriously wonder if you can bear up to one more such gift, even one short hour more of purification. But you can. It does take lots of love and trust, though.
. Above all, know that life itself is a gift. When you look around and can say, "I'm still here!"- then some of the old circumstances that have sorely tried you will lift from your heart.
. Say thank you to the ECK for the blessings. So open your heart. The Sound and Light of God can freely flow into you and make all things new.
. The experiences of life will teach how to make better choices. And how to profit with lessons learned from old, hard-to-manage conditions.
. Count your blessings. Learn from mistakes of old and create a world of a new, higher state of consciousness.

For the members of ECK there are discourses to help you to another stage of understanding yourself spiritually. But the greatest unfoldment comes not through the books, discourses, or talks that happen on the outer side, in the physical world. The greatest unfoldment happens on the inner planes, in your dream worlds, through your intuition, through nudges, and sometimes more directly through visions and Soul Travel.
. These are Divine Spirit's way of helping you. This is how the Mahanta works.
. The Mahanta works to help you, to lift you, so you can understand why you're even in this life and why it pays to go on, because some days it seems almost impossible. You wonder, Why bother? Well, bother.

The Mahanta Is the Dream Master

. The Mahanta, the inner form of the Living ECK Master, is the Dream Master. One way he guides his spiritual students is through their dreams. He uses the dreams of an individual to help work out karma and to impart spiritual understanding. The goal of an ECKist is to move at will between the outer, or physical, world and the inner spiritual worlds. This can be done via the Spiritual Exercises of ECK and by the conscious use of dreams.

More importantly is to have a true look at yourself today: Who and what you are here and now.
. This is more important than a look at the past or a look at the future, even though we in ECK know that the past, present, and future are all one. They are a continuum. The past still exist now, the future is here and now, and as is the present. They're all mixed, back and forth, in and out.
. But with the logical mind, it's a linear way of thinking. We separate the continuum of life into three separate parts: Past, present, and future. And we build walls between.
. In building these walls, we sometimes limit ourselves, limit the potential of what can occur through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

. Note, too, that Rumi takes a reader down unexpected lanes with his poetry. These are far from ordinary poems, for they show the wisdom that comes of a deep love for God.

. . Who makes these changes?
. . I shoot an arrow right.

. Rumi was truly a follower of ECK. Our hearts felt thanks to Coleman Barks for making him accessible to us. Read, enjoy, and contemplate on these evidence of one Soul's great love for God.

... Water and the Moon (February 10)
.

. . There is a path from me to you
. . that I am constantly looking for,

. . so I try to keep clear and still
. . as water does with the moon.

. . . When I am with You (February 23)
.
. . When I am with you, we stay up all night.
. . When you are not here, I can't go to sleep.

. . Praise God for these two insomnias
. . And the difference between them.

. Rumi here speaks of Shamus-i-Tabriz, Shams, the ECK Master who was his teacher in the thirteenth century. But he refers mainly to the inner side of Shams, his Inner Master. This Inner Master reflects a state of consciousness. It is a state that Rumi wishes to enter into. The paradox is that when Shams comes, Rumi is fully, gloriously awake all night, though his human body may appear to be asleep or in contemplation.
. Coleman Barks has a rare gift. He can render Rumi's poems into a clear, vibrant images. And please note that the titles are a creation of Barks. Rumi gave only a single-word title to the whole collection of his poetry: Mathnawi (Masnavi) . It means "couplets."

. . Jalal ad-Din ar-Rumi, a thirteenth-century Persian sage, poet, and ECK follower, had oceans of it (Wisdom), there was so much. And if you decide to read his poetry, I would strongly recommend any of Coleman Barks's version. They dance with the spirit of life! He starts with scholarly translations by others and makes magnificent, easy-to-read poetry from them. Yet he stays true to Rumi's meanings.
. Here again, I would point you to A Year with Rumi by Coleman Barks. It is a collection of poetry that presents a short poem for each day of the year. The poems are short and profound. Any of Barks's books of Rumi's poetry are outstanding.
. In fact, the poems in the aforementioned book are an excellent study for any of you who have a compelling desire to express your love for all things divine, to either yourself or others.
. Here are a few short poems with my brief comments to help your understanding, if needed:

.. Another point: a global disaster need not happen. The Atlanteans, in their long history, turned from love and service to a grab for power and conquest. So its scientific discoveries were often turned toward malicious ends. They unbalanced the cosmic energies, which in turn, brought a shower of asteroids, and even larger bodies, down upon earth.
.. It did not have to happen. The mental energies of a people turned evil do rebound upon them. It is called national karma. Nations, too, must make amends for violations of spiritual law, for it is God's law.

.. Do you feel it is a requirement to willingly sacrifice your life to be a CO-worker with the Mahanta? You need not worry. Eckankar is the path for lovers of life, so an eagerness to live, to survive must always be an overriding passion with you. Hold on to this gift of life at all costs.
. Do you tremble at the prospect of an asteroid striking Earth and causing devastation all around? What if it does? The point is, how would you respond?
. . Would you quiver in some dark corner? Should such a calamitous event occur, many displaced people would need assistance. Show courage! Be strong for others. My words here are not a foreshadowing of a planetary disaster, but a gentle reminder that we exist to serve others. Make this life count.

Divine truth is one and unchanging. Desire truth and you will then find the inner meaning unfolding. Everything has its origin in Spirit. One decides to invent a machine. He first creates it in thought, believing in its power to do a certain work. Then he takes the necessary steps to bring it into visible being. We ask and believe and give something mental existence. The necessary step are unfolded from within to bring it into visible being. So you see,a Master states divine truth, when he says we must ask and believe, to have. Unless we first give a thing mental existence it can never have physical existence.
. Do not be in too much of a hurry for it may take time.
. Yaubl Sacabi, the great ECK Master, says: "There are three basic truths. They are: One-We are the offspring and heirs of God. Therefore we inherit the power to mold the God power by the thoughts we think. Two-What we think, if held to, comes to pass in our lives. Thus we learn by experience. Three -Through learning by experience, we become conscious children of God, and presently come into the glorious liberty of the children of God."

This will also bear out the importance of having a teacher who is living in the flesh. Once Jesus was gone from earth, he was unable to keep his message clear. Eventually, his followers lapsed into rituals instead of the randomly needed for spiritual consciousness. They could have their teacher, present in the Light body, as you do me. But this can only work as long as the teacher resides in the physical. Otherwise, if the teacher is gone, the physical -plane connection is broken and the student cannot verify the reality of the teachings from the Light body of the master. This is where psychic interpretation enters. The student believes he is contacting his master gone from the flesh, which he may very well be doing-but often the student is fabricating an Astral trait of himself. Without the ever upward prodding of the Living ECK Master, the student runs into introversion,a stoppage of unfoldment, seldom rising above the astral illusion he has of his master. The Living ECK Master is needed to give and verify the inner relationship that deepens and leads the student to the very heart of SUGMAD.
