I noted your initial comment and the later comment, i guess you advice the federal road is now a better option as you used it yesterday compared to the old road from Onitsha to Awka due to dry season. If the Federal road is in better state, then it will be a long stretch to Enugu without cutting through the old road. I am taking note of all the points and really appreciate your contributions.

Nooooo. The federal road is OK till you reach Awka. Then on you divert to the old road. On no acount shud you continue on the federal road AFTER Awka.

@oblo what about taking the old road from Onitsha. The federal road from Onitsha used to be bad last time I passed the road January 2015.

Lots of changes on that road since January 2015....That old road route from onitsha na long tin now o....the federal road from onitsha to awka is not as bad again as the dry season is here...infact its a sweet stretch of asphalt right from the iconic Niger bridge till you get to Umunya and as at yesterday when I passed by on my way back from abeokuta they had started some "work" specifically on the Umunya bad section( am.sure that's where you are refering to) till you get to Awkuzu then double lanes till you get to Awka (some construction work still ongoing so watch out for diversions.... some.other sections of the road have been fixed or rather should I say patched

Thanks. just I read through your 1000Km journey, it was quite an experience for you and its very recent.
I will adopt all the measures necessary to ensure my car is on top notch, fluid level at intervals, tyres etc. I can't wait to embark on this epic journey in 007 style. There is a trophy waiting for me on the other side 007 style.
I intend to get brand new tyres but the risk of buying chinco tyres and price is something to consider, the old tyres still look sound, i guess there is a way to check if that can handle the task. What do you think>

From my experience if your tyres have cracks and or bumps on the side wall it would be a good idea to change. I your tyres are worn out merely looking at the treads ....change. Your tyres would sure take a serious pounding on this journey. Please avoid craters as much as you can as Nurey also stated. Your tyres would thank you later.

Let us know how it all goes and when you get to enugu you could buzz me make we hook up nairaland style..

Well like you said its not rocket science


Its more or less a direct route..find your way from lagos via berger and hit shagamu and then on to ijebuode (beware of pot holes and rampant lane changes/flash holdups and right on to ore..(take note of the boiz at ore)

Navigate to benin bypass and connect to benin onitsha express...then on to asaba and onitsha...from onitsha to awka (beware of single lanes and very bad now dusty portions)


Now take very good attention to this...shortly after you pass awka and get to Nnamdi Azikiwe university main gate.. take the first turning on your right( landmark is a number of suya,rams and oranges sellers) to connect you to the old enugu- awka -onitsha road. This road is much better than the federal road that goes on straight.

It takes you through the rolling hills of oji river and udi( where the immediate past governor of enugu hails from and beware of sharp bends)

As you go along u can as well ask directions and also use your mobile maps to give you a heads up.

Ehenn..abeg if you are using a recently registerd car pls and pls dot all your I's and T's as regards your documents. Same goes for tinted permit if your car is tinted. Or else...you know na...
