But beyond the immediate outrage, we also need to ask ourselves a difficult question: what kind of society are we becoming?

We are increasingly seeing teenagers and young adults, some barely 16–18 years old, left to fend for themselves emotionally, financially and sometimes even physically. Children are growing up without adequate parental guidance, mentorship, discipline or meaningful support systems. Many are exposed to poverty, abuse, drugs, social media pressure and violent influences long before they have developed the maturity to handle them.

This does not excuse murder. It never does. But if we only arrest and condemn the individual without examining the environment that helped shape such behaviour, we are treating the symptom while ignoring the disease.

The family is the first school of character, but society also has a role to play. Parents, communities, religious institutions, schools and government all have responsibilities in raising young people who understand the value of life, restraint, responsibility and respect.

We must restore our moral fabric and stop normalising the idea that a young person should simply "find their way" without guidance or support.

Condemn the crime. Let justice take its course. But let this tragedy also remind us that raising children is a collective responsibility. If we continue abandoning young people to survive on their own, society may keep producing consequences that will shock us.
