KANO (AFP) – Relatives of some of the schoolgirls seized in a mass kidnapping by Boko Haram demanded Wednesday that Nigeria’s president meet everyone affected, describing a hastily-arranged plan for a visit with a select few as offensive. More than three months after the Islamist rebels seized 276 girls from a secondary school in the northeastern town of Chibok, President Goodluck Jonathan has not met the parents of the hostagesor with any of the 57 girls who haveescaped.Visiting Nigeria this week to campaign for the girls’ release, Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai, who survived a 2012 assassination attempt by the Taliban, urged Jonathan to hold face-to-face talks with those touched by the abductions. A meeting scheduled for Tuesday was called off at the last minute, with the presidency saying the families had been manipulated by activists who are exploiting the hostage crisis to damage Jonathan politically. But Chibok community leaders told AFP that if Jonathan truly wants make amends for his disappointing response to the abductions, he should visit the town, or, at the very least, bring all the victims to Nigeria’s capital.- ‘We deserve a visit’ - “It is embarrassing that the president had to wait for Malala to come all the way to Nigeria to convince him to meet with us threemonths after the attack,” said Dauda Iliya, a member of the Chibok panel of elders. “We deserve a visit by the president,” he added, saying that if Jonathan cannot go to the remote northeastern town for security reasons, he can bring “all the 219 mothers to meet with him. This meeting should not be selective. ”Jonathan had scheduled a visit to Chibok in May but called it off at the last minute, without providing an explanation.“For more than three months all weare praying for is for Goodluck to come and see what happened to us and see us crying,” said Ayuba Chibok, whose nieces are among the hostages. “If our governor (Kashim Shettima of Borno State) was able to come and go back safely, why can’t the president, with all his helicopters,” he added.Jonathan on Monday asked to meet a small delegation of parents and escapees who were selected by Chibok leaders to travel to Abuja togreet Malala. Chibok residents said the group would have faced significant backlash at home had they met the president.“It would have been a big insult to those of us who were not present,” said a father of a girl who was kidnapped, requesting anonymity.Jonathan spokesman Doyin Okupe charged that the group had been co-opted by the Bring Back Our Girls campaign, which includes some of the president’s political opponents. Okupe told journalists the presidency had formally asked victims to meet Jonathan next week, but the venue and number invited was not immediately clear. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/07/bringbackourgirls-embarrassing-jonathan-wait-malalas-visit-convince-meet-us/ |

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described President Goodluck Jonathan as Nigeria’s number one enemy because of his propensity toperpetrate impunity, abuse federal institutions and tolerate corruption, all in a dangerous clamour to win re-election at all costs. In a statement issued in Osogbo on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said under President Jonathan’s watch, Nigeria has been thrown into unprecedented crisis that is manifesting in the opposition strongholds of Rivers, Edo, Adamawa and Nasarawa States and elsewhere across the country. The President has also abused national institutions perhaps more than any other President in Nigeria’s history, deploying the police and the army to intimidate and harass ordinary citizens in general and opposition supporters in particular, as he did recently in Ekiti and he is allegedly planning to do in Osun state; shutting airports atwill just to punish the opposition and muscling the electoral commission, INEC, to prevent incorruptible RECs from conducting elections, it said.”As we write, there are contrived crises in Rivers and Edo, where a handful of lawmakers with the backing of higher authorities have been terrorizing the Houses of Assembly in their States and defying court orders at will, with the ultimate prize for the renegades being the states’ chief executives; and there is crisis in Adamawa, where an impeachment plot has been undoubtedly instigated and hatched by higher authorities, despite tepid denials, and soldiers have been deployed tocage in very high state officials” In Ekiti, several billions of Naira was allegedly scooped from a massive political war chest to subvert democracy, induce voters and upturn all known political theories to such an extent that all that anyoneseeking to be elected now has to dois to dole out stolen public funds to a people already rendered comatose and impoverished by runaway corruption, glaring incompetence and sheer cluelessness that are thehall marks of the Jonathan Administration.”Under President Jonathan, there isno longer the need to make any electoral promises or carry out people-oriented and quality of life projects. Just distribute bags of rice, expired or not, to a people already famished by a clueless federal government, and tuck in a few nairanotes into the pockets of electorates who have been deliberately impoverished. This is a clear subversion of democracy.”With such huge funds now being allegedly channeled to Osun to thwart the will of the people ahead of the 9 Aug. governorship election,in an attempt to repeat the Ekiti ‘experiment’ which the PDP-led federal government deemed to have been a ‘success’, it is now clearthe Jonathan Administration will not pull any punches in subverting democracy ahead of the 2015 general elections. ”It is also clear now what happened to the 20-billion-dollar oil money that went missing, as well as the reason behind the massive oil subsidy fraud, the Malabo multi-billion dollar fraud, the pension scam, and finally why the President, whose body language does not abhor corruption, has redefined stealing as anything but corruption,”APC said. The party said as far as President Jonathan is concerned, all that matters is his re-election. While he pursues that goal with vigour, the over 200 missing girls in Borno can stay where they are being kept by their abductors for over three months now; and the daily carnage in the North-east as well as Kaduna,Nasarawa and Benue can continue, even though over 12,000 people have been killed and 8,000 maimed. Once the President continues to play his dangerous politics of re-election, which involves using state resources and national institutions to muscle and muzzle the opposition; the press and ordinary citizens, all is well in the eyes of his purposeless party. ‘Unfortunately, in the midst of all the shenanigans, Nigerians are more divided than ever along ethnic and religious lines, no thanks to a President who is so obsessed with power that he will not hesitate to cash in on the nation’s fault lines, abuse federal institutions, compromise once-credible public commentators to shamelessly mortgage their integrity on the altar of greed, and disregard even the Electoral Act by kick-starting electioneering campaign before the starting gun is fired. ”In view of this, we are now alerting the good people of Nigeria that President Jonathan’s re-election at all costs is a clear and present danger to Nigeria, her people and indeed her democracy.”Unless Nigerians speak out and unless the instigated harassment ofthe media by security agencies is halted, so the Fourth Estate of the Realm can continue to perform its constitutional duties unhindered, Nigerians should gear up for more dangerous days ahead, which will include the stripping of the citizenry of their constitutionally-guaranteed basic rights, more egregious abuse of national institutions, perpetration of more acts of corruption as well as the muscling and muzzling of the opposition, even as the people will continue to be impoverished.”On our part, as the country’s main opposition party, we pledge to be unrelenting in speaking the truth to power, irrespective of whether or not it makes the federal government uncomfortable, in the overall interest of our nation,” APC said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/07/president-jonathan-nigerias-number-one-enemy-apc/ |

The idea of nigeria producing nigerian made cars is definately a good one. But before proceeding, the govt should take note of some very important things! A tennant living in a rented house may have plans of building his own house but simply because such a person is planning to bulid a house doesn't mean he/she have to pack out of the place he/she is staying at the present! 1. The govt want the country to start producing her own cars- which is very good! but have they kept the necessary things in place? The federal Govt haven't given any visible proof that they are ready for this. We nigerians have not seen nor heard of any auto producing factory in this country. The govt struck a deal with Nissan motors but have Nissan motors built any factory for the production of cars? 2. Foreign cars undergo series of test before being soldout. Will made in nigeria cars also undergo such test? Remember Nigerians buy cars that are durable! 3. If the govt are really interested in Nigerian made cars, why don't the show us a prototype or start producing these cars in small units and test run them or distribute them to ministries for use so that we Nigerians can see that they are ready. Instead they keep on patronizing foreign made cars! 4. How many govt officials will be willing to buy these cars? How many ministries, heads of dept, permanent secretaries will use these cars as their official car? If yes why don't they start now? 5. Building an auto factory takes years! why is the govt in a rush? Why dont they start building factories now?! We all know how long it takes before the govt can complete a project in this country. The removal of subsidy on P.M.S is a good example of this; till date not even a single refinery has been constructed as promised!. I think these are some of the vital things they should put into consideration before increasing tarriff on used cars. |
@op I have been receiving several of such messages and once I decided to reply to the email address. The lady told me that her "dad is dead. she is from liberia, the dad was very rich and before he died he deposited $5million for her but the mobey is with the regional pastor". She further added that "she can't get the money because she is living in a refugee camp as such I should send my details to the pastor so that he can transfer the money to me and she'll then travel out of there to meet me here in nigeria so that we both can spend the rest of our lifes together". I laughed after reading her makeup story and avoided her email. So just dump her whatever in the trash. |
