Alaghodaro Summit: Obaseki Celebrates Women, Says Female Appointees Spearheading Edo’s Progress

…Mrs Obaseki lists empowerment programmes

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has disclosed how he created more roles for women to find expression in his government, assuring that they will continue to be given priority due to their sterling performance.

He added that the women have shown to be hard working, diligent, and justify the confidence reposed in them.

The governor said this at the Edo Women’s Summit held at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) Sports Complex, in Ugbowo, Benin City, as part of activities to mark the second-year anniversary of the administration.

He said "Women will have priority in my administration. I am proud of the women who have been given opportunity to serve in my administration, they are achieving a lot of successes and making progress in their endeavours.

He described women in the Edo chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as faithful followers and urged them to continue to support the party.

According to him, “When I found out that I did not have the number of women I wanted as commissioners, I created opportunities for more of them to join my government and I am very proud with what the women working with me are doing.

“Whether it is the Attorney General, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe; the woman who is building 1,400 houses for the very first time almost in the last 16 years in Edo State, Isoken Omo, in Edo Development and Property Agency (EDPA) or the amazon of a woman, who is changing education in Edo State, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe. I could go on and on. All the remarkable changes we are making in my government are being spearheaded by women and I thank all of you."

Wife of the Edo Governor, Mrs Betsy Obaseki, said the state has evidence of robust engagement with women, listing the projects being executed by her office to include Centre for Women Development, Betsy's Angels Shelter, Edo Youth Academy, Betsy Obaseki After School Club, Edo Women for Agriculture and Enterprise, Market-Moni, among others.

Mrs. Obaseki said when women are empowered they would be able to contribute to nation building, noting that women were strong forces to reckon with.

She commended women of the state for supporting the Governor Obaseki-led administration, assuring that the administration was committed to their welfare and progress.

She also commended the Bank of Industry for its support in ensuring the growth of small and medium scale businesses in the state.

"My office is collaborating with BOI in the trader and market moni programme which will be rolled out across the state.

"We are targeting to have 50,000 beneficiaries in the financial inclusion scheme in the state.

The first lady presented awards to 36 outstanding women from the 18 local government areas under the Community Mobiliser Award category and also presented the Civil Service Emeritus Award to the retiring Head of service of Edo, Mrs Gladys Idahor.

In her speech, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Magdalene Ohenhen, said the Obaseki-led administration was addressing the gender gap in the state via appointment of women in political and administrative positions.

The women summit was colourful and attended by different women groups from across the 18 local government areas of the state.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has assured the people of the state of his administration’s resolve to vigorously pursue policies and programmes that would guarantee shared prosperity and engender more growth opportunities across the state.

Obaseki gave the assurance at the Alaghodaro Youth Summit/Job Fair tagged: ‘Pathway to Prosperity’ held at the Edo Innovation Hub in Benin-city on Friday as part of activities marking his administration's second anniversary celebration.

He said his administration is concerned about the plight of youths and is determined to restore hope, which informed the theme of the youth summit.

According to him, “We realised that Edo youths are aspirational because of their dream to dominate their environment. Our role as a government is to help you achieve these dreams.”

Obaseki said that despite the challenges faced by his administration, the state government has started on a good note by restructuring the basic education sector with the Edo Basic Education Transformation programme (EDOBEST), which has successfully trained 7,000 digital teachers to change the narrative of basic education in the state.

He added that the promise to create 200,000 jobs is becoming a reality with the creation of 77,200 jobs achieved in collaboration with federal government agencies and multilateral institutions.

"EdoJobs initiative is not only about giving you work, but it is part of it. It was set up to teach you, train you as well as give you skills so that you can find jobs or create jobs for yourself and be an employer of labour,” he explained.

The governor also launched the Edo Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS) and the Edo Start-up Fund Initiative which are aimed at providing skills for the youths as well as access to finance for small businesses in order to eliminate obstacles that hinder youths from contributing to economic development.

The governor, who was visibly elated with the beneficiaries of the Edo Start-up Fund Initiative, gave each of the registered businesses N500,000 to scale up their businesses and provide job opportunities for others in the state.

Each of the beneficiaries of the Edo Start-up Fund Initiative received N300, 000.

Obaseki promised to make available N100million grant to fund start-ups in the state's 2019 budget.

Speaking on the Edo Graduate Internship Scheme, the governor said: "The scheme has identified projects in different areas like construction, technology and agriculture where we send youth for training. As they get trained, they will earn a stipend, and at the end of the training, we will place them on specific jobs.”

Obaseki also disclosed that the Benin Technical College is almost ready, adding that “by the last quarter of next year, we would have completed the restructuring of our Colleges of Education with campuses in Abudu to train primary school teachers and teachers for children with special needs; the Igueben campus will train secondary school teachers while teachers for technical and sports education will be trained on the Auchi campus.”

Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Jobs Creation and Skills Development, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, called on the participants to register on the EdoJobs portal so as to benefit from the 200,000 jobs promised by the government for the Edo people.

She said: “One hundred and seventy two employers have applied for the Edo State internship and apprenticeship skills scheme, and 18 of them are government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).”

While welcoming participants and youth to the summit, the state Commissioner for Wealth Creation, Cooperatives and Employment, Emmanuel Usoh, said the Obaseki-led administration is well on track to fulfill its promise to the people on jobs creation through EdoJobs.

Usoh added that the administration has made appreciable progress in creating jobs for the youths of the state, and in two years, there’s certifiable evidence to show for it.

PoliticsAlaghodaro Summit: Benin Agog As Obaseki Presents Scorecard To Edo People by OdionAkghigbe(op): 6:52pm On Nov 08, 2018
…creates 77,000 jobs, migrates 7,000 teachers to digital platform

…okays 24-month plan to revamp health sector

All is set for the smooth take-off of the second edition of the Alaghodaro Summit which begins on Friday, in Benin City, the state capital.

Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, said the excitement is palpable everywhere in the state as Governor Godwin Obaseki, showcases the impact of government on Edo people in the last two years.

The governor’s aide said, “The interesting thing about this year’s Alaghodaro Summit is that it is about Edo people and residents. The last edition was an investment summit and that was why we had big-ticket investors from all parts of the world converge on Benin City, in November last year.”

He added that “last year’s investment summit broke the ice for the influx of investors which the state has continued to witness across all sectors.

“For the 2018 edition, we are going to have a people’s summit that will bring all Edo people and residents together in one place, face-to-face with their governor.”

Osagie explained that “From the theme of the summit: ‘Edo of Our Dreams - Investing in Our People,’ you can tell that the focus is on the people; the farmer, the vulcaniser, the market men and women, drivers, young people, those in the organised private sector and the unemployed and everyone.”

He maintained that reports from hotels and rest houses in Benin City, show that they are fully booked due to the increasing human traffic into Benin City for the Alaghodaro Summit.

The governor’s aide said the strides of government for the period will be the focus of discussions at the summit, particularly, the over 77,000 jobs already created by the Obaseki administration.

“A special office called EdoJobs was created for this purpose. You do not need to know anyone or meet anyone for a job in Edo State. All you need to do is to log on to the EdoJobs portal and you will be contacted and matched with an employer.

“The governor will also parade the administration’s achievements in the education sector, which has witnessed tremendous reform. Edo teachers, numbering 7,000 are today active participant in the global digital space, conducting classes with digital devices loaded with academic instructions for primary school pupils.

“These achievements are unprecedented, though we are aware the journey is a long one.”

On Obaseki’s achievements in the health sector, Osagie said the efforts of the government to revamp 200 healthcare centres is already yielding fruits, with 20 of them at the verge of completion.

“All these and more will dominate discussions at the Edo people summit, and more importantly, it will be a family affair, where the people will have a chat with their governor,” he added.

The 2018 Alaghodaro Summit, which showcases these initiatives, will feature a number of events, which kick off on Friday, November 9, with the EdoJobs Job Fair/Summit holding from 9am to 12am; Women’s Summit from 11am to 4pm and a Concert, from 6pm to 10pm.

On Saturday, November 10, the Golf Section of the Benin Club, in GRA, Benin City, will host the Governor’s Cup golf tournament. An Interdenominational Thanksgiving Service holds on 10am on Sunday, November 11, while a Luncheon holds by 2pm.

The series of activities lined up for the summit provides a platform to connect with the people and share with them the high sense of commitment to realising government’s reforms, programmes and initiatives to improve the socio-economic status of the state and people.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has received the 2018 Hajj Operations’ Report of the state’s Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare Board, with an assurance that the state government will continue to support Muslims in the state.

Receiving the report at Government House in Benin City, Obaseki commended the conducts of the 130 pilgrims who participated in the hajj and lauded the timely presentation of the Report.

He applauded the support of the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Kabiru Adjoto, to the pilgrims during the hajj as well as the pro bono services rendered by the board’s chairman, Sheikh Ibrahim Oyarekhua, to the pilgrims.

The governor emphasised that participation in the hajj is a special service to Allah and assured that he would study the report to see how more Muslims from the state could participate in future hajj.

Urging the board to begin preparations for the 2019 Hajj on time, Obaseki said the state government would continue to support Muslims in the state.

Earlier, the chairman of the board, Sheikh Ibrahim Oyarekhua, commended the state government for its support to the board and for approving the construction of the Hajj Camp in the state, which he said would be completed soon.

Oyarekhua explained that the support of the Obaseki-led administration has enabled Edo Muslims excel at the state, national and international levels, adding that the 130 pilgrims that participated in the 2018 Hajj returned to the state without any one absconding.
