Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has signed the Edo State Criminal Justice Administration Bill into Law. Governor Obaseki, who assented to the bill at the Government House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital on Tuesday, said, “The law would strengthen the protection of the rights of citizens and ensure fair and speedy administration of justice.” Obaseki explained, "This event is historic as it is the first time in decades that a comprehensive review and modernisation of the Criminal Law procedure would be undertaken.” Noting that the law will address a number of bottlenecks that hitherto delayed dispensation of justice, he said "Our focus in the justice sector is informed by the deep conviction that there would not be a modern society, particularly the type we seek to build, without respect for the rule of law.” "The criminal justice administration law is designed to take us beyond the colonial era rules of criminal procedures and introduce innovative legal procedure, which will ensure fair hearing in the court of law with due consideration of time," the governor said. Obaseki added that the state government, through the Ministry of Justice, would put all the needed infrastructure in place to ensure the implementation of the Criminal Administration Law. He commended the committee on judiciary for the effort put into the drafting of the bill, adding, “The state government will ensure that sufficient copies of the law would be made available. The law will be implemented to support the government in protecting lives and property. Chief Judge of the State, Justice Eseohe Ikponmwen, represented by Justice Joe Acha, said "The Criminal Justice Administration Law will give a new face to the criminal justice system in the state as well as improve the judiciary.” State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, said the Criminal Administration Law will eliminate procedures that delay justice. Chairman, Edo State Chapter of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Barr. Ede Asenoguan, said the state government’s domestication of the law is highly commendable, noting, “As of last year, only six states had such a law in place, now that Edo has the law, it is work in progress.” PHOTO1 Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki (middle) signing the Criminal Justice Administration Bill into Law at the Government House, Benin City, on Tuesday, March 20, 2018. To equip entrepreneurs with training and finance to produce ready goods for export especially with anticipated increase in industrial activity in the state, the Edo State Government has commenced talks with the Nigerian Export-Import (NEXIM) Bank on how she can access over N553 billion funding for local manufacturers and industries. Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, represented by the Commissioner for Wealth Creation, Cooperatives and Employment, Hon. Emmanuel Usoh, at a meeting organised for local manufacturers and officials of NEXIM Bank, said, “Edo State has the comparative advantage for exporting local goods which will create employment for youths." Obaseki said the state government is working to rev up industrial activity with the coming of the industrial park, modular refinery, inland container depot, Gelegele Seaport and the rice farm, all of which are geared to encourage exportation and earn foreign exchange. He said, "The state government intends to achieve its promise to create 200,000 jobs in the first four years of this administration, with the funding windows offered by NEXIM Bank." Obaseki noted that a business bureau will be set up to coordinate the activities of local manufacturers, adding, “There is need for NEXIM Bank to situate a desk office in the state's Ministry of Wealth Creation, Cooperatives and Employment to promote strong partnership." Executive Director, Business Development, NEXIM Bank, Mrs. Stella Okotete, said, “Nigeria is only exporting 10 percent of Cocoa consumed globally with N13 billion spent monthly on cocoa. But, we spend over N13 billion on chocolate import." According to her, "With the diversification policy of President Muhammadu Buhari, the country is making effort to promote manufacturing activities in the non-oil sector of the economy. Since Edo State has a drive to diversify its economy, NEXIM Bank has the fund to assist the state government and to encourage local manufacturers to improve their goods to meet international export standards.” Okotete said funding will no longer be a challenge for local manufacturers who intend to export their goods, noting, “Local manufacturers can access funds from NEXIM Bank to improve the quality of their goods. Local manufacturers need to grow their capacities and contribute to job creation.” “The NEXIM export stimulation fund is N500 billion with a single digit interest rate, between 5 to 9 percent. "To access the loan, local manufacturers are expected to have an off-taker agreement, an export contract, registration with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), three years financials, with an application fee of N50,000. The fund will be available to the local manufacturers within 32 working days.” PHOTO1 L-R: Senior Special Assistant to Edo State Governor on Investment, Kelvin Uwaibi; Executive Director, Business Development, Nigerian Export Import (NEXIM) Bank, Hon. By Crusoe Osagie Ordinarily, this piece does not deserve any reply, and the reason is simple, reading through it, it is immediately obvious that the author has absolutely no clue to what is happening in Edo State. However, I am compelled to respond because as a journalist with about two decades experience, the first thing I do before reading a piece is to check the name of the author and in this case, I am excited to find that the author is well known. We worked together at THISDAY for several years. So for me, this reply is just an intellectual exchange with an opponent I know fairly well. Firstly, Ojeifo, you may be from Edo State, but you and I know that apart from the jaundiced brief you received from Dan Orbih and other actors within the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), you have no clue to what is happening in Edo State. For the purpose of safeguarding the little professional regard I have for you, I will like to assume that you were conned by Orbih and his bedfellows to do this piece that has seriously belittled the supposedly high standing of journalism expertise which you acquired during your days as a crack reporter for THISDAY newspapers. But of course, a lot of water has gone under the bridge since you left and you probably are not quite the investigative and critical journalist you used to be. The first shock I received from reading your opinion piece was when you seemed to suggest that Obaseki needs to load his government with political jobbers, who you quite eloquently described as “experienced grassroots politicians.” In your own words, “The dearth of experienced politicians in his government is obvious in his political and strategic missteps”. My question to you is, do all these experienced politicians have to be in Obaseki’s government as political appointees? Like you seemed to suggest before they can play their roles as political leaders within the ruling party in the state. Or has my comrade journalist become so degraded in his idealistic struggle for the good of the common man to begin to make such a shameful case for ‘job for the boys’? On the preposterous allegation of the diversion of rice meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to a Senator in Ondo State and to a certain house after the by-pass in Benin City, for which Orbih literarily, thumped his chest and boasted on a popular pidgin English radio programme, Man Around Town, I wonder why Ojeifo cannot understand that if any one makes such a definite allegation that a crime has been committed and goes on to state that he has incontrovertible evidence, then naturally, the police and other security agencies have a job to do on that matter. I am sure Orbih did not tell Ojeifo while he was priming him to write his piece that he has been sending emissaries to the government to plead that charges should not be pressed against him. As for the petition allegedly sent by the PDP to the police claiming that myself and the Honourable Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Paul Ohonbamu Esq., may have incited the public against the Edo PDP because we have called them a party of bandits and rogues, I would like to remind Ojeifo, in case his journalist note pads have been misplaced in the pursuit of other interests, that a court of competent jurisdiction, in December 2008, in Enugu, convicted a former governor of Edo State on the platform of the PDP, for fraud and misappropriation of funds. So, if we therefore say that such a political party in the state that produced a governor who was convicted for fraud is a party of bandits and rogues, is there no logical premise to draw such a conclusion? Finally, for your information, assuming that a section of your journalism ethics which seeks truth and balance persists, I would like to remind you of the recent local government elections where the “Team PDP” who you have described as being on rampage in Edo State, seeking for goals, chickened out of the process and could not as much as feature even one candidate for the council polls. The 18 council chairmen from the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and all the councillors from the party have since been sworn into office and have commenced governing at the grassroots level. If this zero sum political outcome is the result due to a political party “on rampage, seeking for goals”, then this sort of rampage may be the most desirable by any ruling party from the opposition. Edo State is no longer a fiefdom ruled by a few lords. Hard as this might be for you to accept, considering your relationship with some of the unseen forces that held the state to ransom, and who were famously retired from politics by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, there is a new order in the state, in which governance is about the ordinary people of Edo State, as against the old order of a privileged few. The new order is the new normal and will remain for a long time to come. Governor Obaseki is committed to sustaining this new order by safeguarding the interests of the ordinary Edo people and residents in the state. …appeals to doctors to go back to work. Worried by the recurring strike actions by medical doctors and other workers in the health sector, the Edo State government said work on a holistic plan for workers in the sector has reached advanced stage. Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr Crusoe Osagie, said the health sector is a major pillar of the government’s overall policy framework for the state and appealed to the striking workers to be patient with the state government. Osagie said: “The Edo State Government is adopting a holistic approach to the reform of the health sector in the state. We urge the health professionals to exercise some patience as hasty and tokenistic efforts cannot produce the high standard of healthcare which the Obaseki-led government has envisioned for Edo people. “The plans have been made and partners are being sourced, and in good time, the results will manifest.” He added that the governor has tremendous respect for health workers and will not turn a deaf ear to issues that affect their welfare. “As you are aware, Governor Obaseki is passionate about getting the health sector to contribute significantly to his administration’s overall goal. This informs his personal involvement in health care programmes, from immunisation to the distribution of long lasting insecticidal nets and the commitment to the construction of primary health care centres across the state.” The governor’s aide assured that the health sector will receive more than the usual attention in the months that will follow the unveiling of the reforms for the sector.

What do you expect when money is thrown to a party that is no more ground. |
...Lauds Obaseki’s Tough Stance. As more Edo people and groups in the country throw their weight behind the orders of the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, Edo people in the diaspora have expressed their support for the orders and curses of the Monarch and the state government’s tough stance on human trafficking. President, Edo Global Organisation, Dr. Stephen E.O. Ogbonmwan, a frontline pan-Edo cultural group, with members spread across various countries of the world, said the drastic times the Edo people found themselves called for the drastic measures. The United Kingdom-based Consultant Obstetrician, said: “What happened in the Palace shows the concern of the Omo N’Oba about the current negative trend in Edo land. We need more of such actions from religious, political and traditional leaders to stop our youths on the sliding slope to self destruction, greed, excessive love for money and the get-rich-quick syndrome, to come back to the straight and narrow path.” Ogbonmwan decried “the behaviour of the ‘madams’ (traffickers) and the attitude of our young women, which made many of us ashamed in the Diaspora, hence we were working relentlessly to support the young ones on the right path to success to show to the world that Edo People are not bad people.” He explained that “the love of money, more than the love and care for our fellow brothers and sisters and greed, degenerated to a point where brothers were selling brothers into slavery or ‘grassing on them’ by sending armed robbers and kidnappers on their brother’s trail. It is to reverse these ugly trends that we in Edo Global Organisation support our Oba. “Drastic issues call for drastic measures in the language our people understand. It shows how very well the Palace understands the current issues affecting our people.” He noted that “with the Edo State government’s tough stance against illegal migration, the involvement of Omo N’Oba and the event in the Palace a few days ago, we have seen the final nails on the coffin of illegal migration and prostitution which are organised crimes against our young men and women.” On the efforts by his organisation to check the menace, Ogbonmwan said “in July last year, we organised an international conference to draw attention to it. The effort was lauded by the United Nations and the European Union. We wrote petitions that went viral on the internet.” He urged Edo youths to embrace the several opportunities in the state, to improve their lives and become respected citizens of the nation. |
Edo State Government has urged appointees and top government officials to mobilise their constituents in local government areas to register on the EdoJobs portal, a platform set up to coordinate skills development and job creation initiatives and tackle unemployment in the state. In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Skills Development and Jobs, Ukinebo Dare, the state government said that there are existing vacancies for jobs and upcoming training on the portal. “We humbly appeal that you use your good office to reach out to constituents in your local government so they can apply for jobs and upcoming trainings,” the aide said. She explained that opportunities advertised on the portal cut across all senatorial districts in the state and there are relevant vacancies for various levels of qualifications and ages. The governor’s aide said that the EdoJobs 2.0 is a relaunch of the project, which is the skills development programme set up to meet Governor Obaseki’s desire for job creation and employability of residents in Edo State. Recall that the state government reopened the EdoJobs portal on March 2, calling on residents in the state to register for job and training opportunities. At the press conference to relaunch the programme, Dare explained that the state government is partnering with organisations that are specialised in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), mobile phone and laptop repairs, automobile mechanics among others, to train youths across the three senatorial districts in the state. The training, she said, “is designed in such a way that some programmes have stipend packages, start-up packs while others have business support packages for trainees. The programme will also address the needs of the participating business partners and individuals.” She added that youths will be trained in various skills to meet the increasing demands for highly skilled workforce in the state. “The objective of the programme is to enable the state government prepare youths as entrepreneurs and employers of labour in line with the vision of the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, to create 200,000 jobs,” she said. ...As They Hail Edo Govt’s Campaign. Few hours after the Edo State government formally expressed its alignment with the royal orders and pronouncements of the Benin Monarch, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, market women in the state have hailed the courage of the Oba, pledging to abide by the orders. Leader of Edo Market Women, Madam Blackie Ogiamien, described the orders of the Benin Monarch as “progressive,” noting that it gives the needed support to Edo State Government’s campaign against human trafficking and illegal migration. She added that with the blessing of the royal father, “the people and government of the day are now in synch and it will only take one who is foolhardy to continue in the despicable practices that have aided and abetted human trafficking for years.” She argued that the charge by the royal father “will bring succour to market women and mothers in general, in the state, most of whom have been yearning for an intervention in the inhuman trade that have claimed the lives of many Edo youths.” Madam Ogiamien said: “We are comforted by the orders of our father, Oba Ewuare II. Edo people know and appreciate the weight of the curses and orders of the King and we are happy about the orders. “A lot of mothers sold houses and gave the proceeds to people who lied that they can take their children abroad through legal means and give them decent jobs on arrival. But the children were abandoned in jungles of death in Libya and in the Sahara Desert, while others died in Mediterranean Sea while being ferried in rickety boats.” She added that families in Benin and elsewhere in the state are happy and comforted by the royal pronouncements and assured that market women will abide by the orders. At a well-attended meeting of chiefs, dukes, native doctors, priests and priestesses with the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N' Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, on Friday, the Benin Monarch placed curses on the people perpetrating human trafficking in the state. The Benin Monarch also extended the curses to killer gangs and cult groups, armed robbers who have been unleashing terror on innocent people in the state and causing mayhem in the name of cult activities. He nullified all oaths administered by human traffickers through their collaborators; native doctors and priests, on victims of the inhuman trade, with a directive that victims of human trafficking are now free from any spiritual oath. He directed the trafficked persons to speak out and name their slave masters and mistresses and seek help if need be. Since last Friday's meeting at the Oba's palace, the outcomes of the meeting have dominated discussions among Edo people, who have expressed hope that the curses will check human traffickers, home and abroad, who have brought the pride and dignity of the Edo people to disrepute, through their criminal activities. |
Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has hailed mothers for their sacrifices to society in the face of a challenging work culture that places less premium on work-life balance, promising to do more for mothers through government policies and initiatives. Obaseki, who made the pledge in commemoration of Mother’s Day, marked in Nigeria on March 11, applauded the organisations that are drumming support for the acknowledgement of the roles of mothers in the society and calling for adequate reward for their contributions to nation building. According to him, “On this day, it is important to celebrate mothers who have contributed so much in moulding society. They are expected to be many things at once and have held these responsibilities in these very challenging times. “But it is also important to stress that the mothers can be given a much fairer deal by pushing for reforms in workplaces to afford mothers better opportunity to work and also take care of the other roles they play." He used the opportunity to celebrate mothers in Edo State, who appreciate the wisdom in speaking out against the ugly trend of human trafficking after learning of the horrors their children pass through on the dangerous journeys abroad. He added, “Mothers are germane to societal advancement and one cannot deny the sacrifices they have made. At the same time, we also know that they are change agents, and to a large extent wield immense influence in homes. That is why we are happy that a number of them are now speaking against the ills of human trafficking and illegal migration. We know that with their support, we will make tremendous progress.” He said his administration was committed to creating the enabling work and business environments for mothers to attain their heights in society. "Our commitment to placing the issues of mothers and women on the front burner informed my recent appointment of 19 female aides on gender to mainstream women issues in governance," Obaseki said. He explained that his administration's resolve to bring human trafficking to an end, was due partly, to the conviction that if Edo women are empowered through skills acquisition programmes and education, they will do more for themselves and the society and will not fall prey to human traffickers. He added: “It is imperative on this day to assure mothers of policies that will make it possible for them to pursue their careers and reach their full potential even as they run the home. So, this behooves on us to develop reforms, which we have started, to afford women more time and space to contribute to societal development.

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that his administration will continue to build on the sterling legacies of former governor of the defunct Mid-West and Bendel States, late Dr. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia. Obaseki made the submission at the weekend during a visit to the family of late Ogbemudia, as part of the activities to mark the one-year anniversary of the former governor's death. Late Samuel Ogbemudia was born on September 17, 1932. He served as an officer in the Nigerian Army and was the military administrator of the defunct Mid-West State between 1967 and 1975. Ogbemudia also served as a civilian governor in the old Bendel State in 1983. His tenure was cut short by the December 1983 military coup. He died on March 9, 2017, aged 84 years. According to Obaseki, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Chief Taiwo Akerele, “We would not forget in a hurry, the fond memories of the late ex-governor, whose outstanding achievements and contributions in all sectors of the state's economy are still standing today.” The governor assured family of the late Ogbemudia of the state government's continued support. He said, “The emergence of Eghe Ogbemudia as chairman, Egor Local Government Area shows that the people appreciate and trust the late governor’s family in delivering dividends of democracy.” Chairman Egor Local Government council and daughter of the late governor, Eghe Ogbemudia, expressed appreciation to Edo and Delta states for their continued support, noting, “The Ogbemudia family appreciates the goodwill of Edo and Delta people." On his part, first son of the late Elder stateman, Samuel Ogbemudia Jr. said, “The family will continue to celebrate the legacies of our father. I appreciate Edo and Delta states, which formed the old Bendel State for their commitment to keeping the legacies of our father."
