Politics / Some Birth Control Methods Are Silent Violence Against Women, - Ayade by offiong187: 12:56pm On May 27, 2021
Some birth control methods are silent violence against women, says Ayade

Cross River state governor, Professor Ben Ayade has decried all forms of violence against women, including subjecting them to brutal birth control.

The governor spoke Tuesday during the launch of the HeforShe campaign, a United Nations' initiated global solidarity movement for advancement of gender equality,  at Transcorp Hotel, Calabar.

Ayade who was honoured at the occasion as HeforShe Ambassador took a swipe at donor agencies for inflicting on women "silent violence" through birth control mechanisms.

He also argued that men should equally be subjected to birth control through castration because "when it comes to family planning, it is the women that take the injections, take the implants and this is violence against women. If you want a holistic population control, castrate the men"

"Why do you allow women who give birth only once in nine months take all the medication? Why has research always been against women? As United Nations, you must recognise the fact that every single drugs you take must have a cumulative side effects.

"I have seen marriages that are challenged because three years into the marriage the lady cannot bear a child because the prolonged use of implants have damaged her capacity to bear a child thus challenging her marriage, breaking her marriage and putting her through so much psychological pain.

"I think that silent violence against women should be what we champion today going forward, including the UN itself and so many international agencies who believe that all financial aid to Africa will be useless unless our population is controlled", he quipped.

Continuing, the Cross River state number one citizen rued that "there are so many international agencies in Africa that are not here for birth control but to sterilize young women and that's true. There are so many drugs for family control that are designed to sterilize the women"

He called on the United Nations to boldly speak out against violence against African women through birth control.

"I wonder why the UN has not seen this as gender violence towards women. I think that the UN must take it very seriously.

It is not sufficient for us to come and pay lip service to the issue of gender violence, gender violence is a celebrated issue across the world and everyone of us are involved", he said.

Speaking, the Paramount ruler of Obanliku in Northern Cross River, His Royal Majesty, Uchua Amos Uyimulam who was also honoured as HeforShe Ambassador in recognition of his dogged fight against "money wife", a slavish marriage practice in his domain against young girls, called for the abolition of all cultural practices that limit women's right.

Earlier, the state commissioner for International Development Corporation, Dr.Inyang Asibong described Ayade as women friendly governor going by the number of women holding strategic positions in his government.

She explained that the governor was picked as HeforShe Ambassador "because of his commitment to the elimination of gender based violence and ensuring gender equality in Cross River state"

Politics / Ayade: Why I Left PDP To Join APC by offiong187: 1:10pm On May 20, 2021
Why I joined APC- Ayade

Cross River State Governor, Sir Ben Ayade Thursday dumped the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He formally declared for the ruling party at the Cross River State Executive Council Chamber, Governor’s Office in Calabar after a two-hour meeting with seven APC governors led by the party’s interim chairman and governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni.
Speaking on why he was joining the APC, Ayade highlighted the character attributes of President Muhammadu Buhari and the realisation that Cross River, which has been emasculated economically following the ceding of its oil wells, needed to be in sync with the party at the center, as the main reasons for moving.

According to the governor, “having seen and known the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and his commitment to this country, his nationalistic disposition and all the efforts he has made to bring Nigeria to where we are today, it is obvious that at this point we needed to join hands with him to build a Nigeria that we can be proud of .

“We need all governors to recognize that it is not party that matters. It is character, it is honor, it is commitment to the vision of this great nation. We all need to as a team work ahead of the president by working towards building a prosperous country that the succession worries of 2023 will come without the fears and the worries the international community has for us.

“I believe that if everyone of us as governor joins hands with Mr President, I think we can sit on the same dining table and fashion out a way to govern this country.”

Speaking on the development, an elated Buni said he and his team were in the state to formally welcome Governor Ayade to the APC.

His words: “I am here on behalf of the APC family to welcome His Excellency the Executive Governor of Cross River State formally to the APC. As from today he is the leader of the party in the state.”

Other APC governors who witnessed the event were Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Solomon Lalong of Plateau State, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu and his Jigawa state counterpart, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar.

Also present was the Minister of State for Petroleum, Chief Timipre Sylva.

Others at the meeting were the state deputy governor, Prof Ivara Esu, Speaker of the state house of assembly, Rt. Hon. Eteng Williams Jones and members of the state house of assembly, some National Assembly members, members of the Cross River State Executive Council members, local Government chairmen, councilors and some stakeholders, including Dame Princess Florence Ita-Giwa and High Chief Asuquo Ekpenyong amongst others.

Politics / Ayade Inaugurates Committee To End Age-long Boundary Disputes In Four Communitie by offiong187: 6:38pm On May 18, 2021
Ayade inaugurates ’s committee to end age-long boundary disputes in four communities

Cross River state governor, Professor Ben Ayade, Tuesday inaugurated a Peace, Reconciliation and Rehabilitation Committee to resolve age-long land disputes between Ebom/Ebijaghara and Ediba/Usumutong communities in Abi local government area of the state.

The five-man committee is headed by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Senate Majority Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma Egba.

Speaking Tuesday while inaugurating the Committee at the Executive Chamber of the Governor's Office, Calabar, governor Ben Ayade frowned at the destruction and loss of lives in the four communities arising from the land dispute.

He therefore, charged the committee to come up with recommendations that would “seek ways and means to bring lasting peace to the people of Ebom , Ebijaghara, Ediba and Usumutong people, to put a lasting peace and bring hope to our people"

The governor said he personally selected members of the committee based on their track record and expressed confidence in their ability to deliver.

Turning to Senator Ndoma Egba, Ayade said: "Your choice as Chairman is based on your antecedents as a SAN, you have reached the pinnacle of your profession, the profession of dispensing justice and fairness.

"As a SAN you know you have a deep experience of Cross River State. Your  history is as old as the new renaissance of Cross River. You know all the key players by name, your image and towering influence should be able to calm the nerves and sit everyone down on a negotiating table and agree.

"God has touched my soul to ask and seek your intervention in this protracted crisis between our brothers , four communities of the same local government perpetually at war with each other. God has whispered to me that you will bring a lasting solution to this crisis.

"It is a call from Almighty God because the amount of bloodshed has reached an unacceptable limit, the level of wanton destruction has become cataclysmic.

"You have a duty to ensure that your committee performs her duty with dispatch. We are saddling you with a responsibility that is the biggest ever because you have a role to get all the four communities to sit together.”

The Cross River state governor  urged the Committee to explore the possibility of demarcating boundaries of the four communities and pledged to implement it's recommendations to the latter.

He disclosed that rehabilitation of the warring communities would be conditioned by the Committe's final report.

"Your white paper will determine the amount of houses to be built in these communities, water supply , rural electrification, solar installations, all of this will form a product of your report", Ayade quipped.

Responding, Senator Ndoma Egba assured the governor his committee would bring peace to the four communities saying, "we will put our lives, our bodies, our blood and our souls into this assignment.

"Your Excellency as you know I have carried out assignments locally, nationally and internationally, but I want to say on behalf of the members of my committee that this is the assignment of our lives, this is our most important assignment. So I want to assure you sir that we will put our all in this assignment. It is not in anyway a political assignment because peace has nothing to do with politics", the former Senate Majority Leader further said.

owobokiri:
Good job!
Many in government fail to understand that you can't have a good student without having a good teacher. A serious Teachers Training Institute is the best thing a government can do for their people. Same with nursing schools. We complain of bad mechanics and bad electricians and carpenters yet there are no serious schools to train artisans to specifics. We are still having artisans trained either by their fathers or uncles. Quality is not measured or graded! No certificates! Why won't the final product fail short?

Ayade's administration has also put in place a fabrication academy to help skilled labor in the state.

Ayade: Why Cross River’s Continuous Teachers Training Institute’ll be world best

Cross River State governor, Sir Ben Ayade, yesterday hinted that the combination of ambience and learning at the Teachers Continuous Training Institute located in Biase Local Government Area is to create an atmostphere that is academic but yet very inspiring and welcoming.

Ayade who spoke while inspecting ongoing furnishing work at the institute commended the speed and quality of equipment so far installed.

"I am really excited about the possibility of having a world class teaching environment in Cross River State because we understand the influence of environment on quality of teaching and quality of learning.

"I am very very impressed with the quality and the speed of furnishing. My hope is that will have the urgency and need to enroll enmasse. We can beam with satisfaction that the Nigerian Teachers Training Institute will now take place here and I am sure that at the fullness of time, the Nigerians will recognize the value of quality education."

The governor stressed that "education is the basis for more societal transformation and that is why Cross River State is being ruled by two professors. And as a government we place emphasis on the quality of teaching and quality of research, hence this school."

Speaking further on the reason for establishing the Institute, Ayade maintained that "the Teachers Continuous Training Institute, the first of its kind, is intended to train teachers and continuously retrain teachers because the quality of students is determined by the quality of teaching and the quality of teaching is a reflection of the quality of the training.

"Traditionally, when teachers are out of the university and get employed as teachers, they have no opportunity for further training, and no continuous training. So the teachers themselves are sometimes not upto date, even with the subjects they teach.

"This is because trends and research keep throwing up new findings, but unfortunately a teacher has no opportunity to update his knowledge on the subject matter, particularly when you are teaching in a village setting and away from the city centre like the capital of the state."

According to the governor, "the institute is therefore, set up specifically to attend to the teaching needs of West Africa, to drive home the message of quality teaching because only through quality teaching that you can have quality learning which also translates to quality outcome."

Ayade said drawing from his background as a teacher, "I studied the limitations of our teaching and I come from a university setting therefore, my inspiration came from my own life. I have been in and around a university environment at very young age, I know its pitfalls and so given the opportunity as a governor, I needed to correct those things that I saw that were wrong because teachers were not comfortable, the teaching environment was not comfortable, teaching was made to be seen as the last resort when every other job failed.

On the curricular that will be run by the institute, the governor disclosed that the plan is “to run a curriculum that is very akin to and related to our GCE, WAEC, and NECO exams across West Africa. If we are preparing students to write physics, we will bring in the best physics teachers across the world but instead of them coming to teach the students, they're coming to teach the teachers so the teachers will gain this knowledge and go back and teach the students in their various schools.

"So, if am teaching you physics and I am a specialist in optics, then I will come and teach optics and I will leave after two months or three months depending on the duration of my contract. But the Professor who is the provost of this institute must have an affiliation across the world to know the best hands to bring in for each speciality to train the teacher who will now go and teach that subject in the secondary school. This means he is returning with advanced knowledge and the latest knowledge in his discipline."

Urging teachers not to despair any longer, the governor said: "I am telling all teachers in Cross River State, in Nigeria and indeed West Africa that today you have been recognized as key persons in the value chain process of creating a better society. Now we have an institute which is not just here to issue a certificate but it is here to train and retrain and continuously train you. Welcome to the era of teachers, Welcome to the era where teachers are now in the driving seat. Teachers have finally been recognized by Cross River State. It is indeed the turn of teachers."

Health / World Hypertension Day! Check Your BP Regularly Dr Betta Edu. by offiong187: 3:48pm On May 17, 2021
*Why die suddenly, why lose your kidneys prematurely. Don’t take your life for granted; it’s World Hypertension Day check your BP today and always!*

Measure your blood pressure always, control it, live longer in good health! - Dr Betta Edu

Hypertension affects more than 30% of the adult population worldwide, more than one billion people around the world. It is the main risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, especially coronary heart disease and stroke, but also for chronic kidney disease, heart failure, arrhythmia and dementia.
The burden of hypertension is huge. More than half of people living with hypertension are unaware of their condition, putting them at risk of avoidable medical complications and death. Accurate blood pressure (BP) measurement is essential for the proper diagnosis and management of hypertension. BP measurement is perhaps the most commonly performed procedure in clinical medicine and, although it seems simple at first glance, current suboptimal measurement leads to negatively impacting clinical management decisions in 20 – 45% of cases.

Assessing healthcare workers performance of BP measurement and how to improve it are key elements of a successful hypertension control. Individuals who have hypertension must understand that you need to religiously take their anti hypertensive medication daily to live longer and healthier. You must learn to measure your blood pressure with your own BP equipment daily to keep track and avoid a stroke or other complications.

Too many sudden deaths in resent times, too many kidney failure even in young people, too many loss of memory, lose of speech, loss of sight and hearing, “ghost slap”, village people stroke etc. all of this can be avoided just by checking your blood pressure regularly and sticking to your medication.

Are you having consistent head ache, neck pain, are you stressed? Do you feel dizzy? Do you hear your heart beating? Are you anxious and worried about anything?... please check your blood pressure... don’t gamble with your life!

Politics / Resident Doctors Honour Ayade With Champion Of Industrialization Award, by offiong187: 8:34pm On May 11, 2021
Resident Doctors honour Ayade with Champion of Industrialization award, laud him over security

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar chapter, yesterday Tuesday honored Cross River State governor, Sir Ben Ayade with an award in recognition of his giant industrialization strides.

The association also commended the governor for putting in place security mechanisms, including Operation Akpakwu, which has curtailed incidences of crime in the state.

Members of the association who paid a courtesy call on Ayade at the conference room of the Governor's Office, Calabar, said they came to present him with the Champion of Industrialization Award in recognition of his strides in industrializing the state.

President of the association, Dr.Godwin Udoh praised Ayade for his strides in various sectors of economy and pledged the union's unflinching support for his administration, especially in the area of healthcare delivery.

"Your Excellency, we have taken note of your giant strides in various sectors of Cross River's economy and we are satisfied with your performance.

“In the area of industrialisation, Calachika, rice factory, Noodles factory, Cally Air among others are all there for everyone to see", Dr. Udo said

On the health sector, the NARD president commended the governor for upgrading the School of Midwifery, Itigidi, to a full fledged school of nursing, the renovation and equipping of the General Hospital, Calabar and the introduction of Health Insurance Scheme in the state.

Dr. Udoh expressed delight that since the introduction of Operation Akpakwu, medical doctors in the state no longer suffer kidnap by criminals.

"The security architecture you introduced in the state has hugely saved medical doctors the nightmare of incessant kidnap as witnessed in the past. We thank you for this, Your Excellency,” he said.

Responding, Governor Ayade thanked them for the honour, saying it is an elixir that will spur him to do more.

The governor likened his industrialization drive to the agro-industrial revolution in Britain, which allows you to develop and provide jobs at the same time.

"How else can you explain that Cross River, a state that is number 35 out of 36 in terms of federal allocation, reduced to want in body, in spirit and in finance, yet has the highest number of newly built industries? Nobody can contradict me on this," the governor stated.

Continuing, he told the visiting doctors that "in the history of this country, no governor has built the number of industries I have built and I built those industries based on a scientific background."

He described Agro- industrialisation as a veritable means of job creation in the state with a view to reducing crime as well as "the primary step to actually hand-hold a state out of poverty and create a prosperity agenda."

Politics / Shameful Manipulation Of BBC Reportage A Case Of CR Pensions by offiong187: 12:12pm On May 11, 2021
A SHAMEFUL MANIPULATION OF BBC REPORTING IN NIGERIA - A Case of Cross River State Pensioners

It has become compelling to draw the attention of the editorial directorate of the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC to a recent shameful manipulated news documentary of the station's Africa Eye sub desk with the above title which focused on only 4 pensioners out of the thousands upon thousands in Cross River State and clearly vented falsehood and manifested unprofessionalism to the personal advantage of one of its Staff.

The report pathetically fell short of acceptable journalism credo and ethics, leaving one to wonder how such a jaundiced and puerile report passed editorial scrutiny at the BBC headquarters in London.

It is either that the BBC deliberately engaged in shoddy investigative reporting or it lent itself, wittingly or unwittingly, as a tool to achieve a predetermined end- a hatchet job of sorts.

For example, it is ghoulish beyond belief that the title of the report suggested a holistic searchlight on issues bordering on pension in Nigeria yet the content was purely about Cross River pensioners.

And out of the population of pensioners in Nigeria which runs in millions, the BBC Reporter only settled for four pensioners in Cross River as case studies.

Tellingly, this is a State with thousands of pensioners, with local government pensioners alone standing at 7,000 whose pensions gulp almost half a billion Naira monthly and are paid without fail, yet, it took the BBC five months to reach just four local government pensioners for interview, among whom is one Margaret Abung Akpet, mother of Obaji Akpet, who introduced himself to State government officials as a BBC reporter, to represent the so called "hell" that pensioners go through in the State.

Now, why would the BBC be a judge in its own case? A conflict of interest it was for Obaji Akpet to have taken part in the investigation, which was a charade. Perhaps that explains why he was not introduced in the documentary as a BBC Reporter.

As an interested party, it was dishonest that the BBC masked Obaji's identity as its employee and allowed him to be at the centre of wild and unsubstantiated allegations that sought to discredit the noble efforts of the Senator Prof. Ben Ayade led Cross River State government to dismantle an entrenched corrupt system which has over the years impeded corruption-free pension administration in Cross River and enabled the likes of Mrs Margaret ABUNG Akpet to circumvent the rules; clearly seen by the Governor’s Dissolution of the Pension Board shortly after the 2019 Verification Exercise (https://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2020/01/21/cross-river-govt-dissolves-pension-board/) an online report the BBC in its ‘thorough’ investigation neglected to report.

Contrary to the BBC report, there was never a time the Office of Auditor-General for CRS Local Governments declared the unverified names in its list as dead or ghost pensioners; rather they were merely tagged "SUSPECTED GHOST PENSIONERS”, having failed to come forward for verification to justify the payment of their pensions.

The list containing the names of those whose pensions were withheld for the above stated reasons which the BBC Reporter used to cross-check the names of the four persons they interviewed had as its title, List of suspected ‘ghost’ pensioners yet she repeatedly claimed that the said persons were declared dead by government just to fit her twisted narrative. What a dishonest act.

It is instructive to state that all verified pensioners in the state are paid their pensions without fail. In essence, the government is not owing any verified pensioner a dime. This is on record.

If the BBC had opted for an unbiased and professional investigative report without compromise and sentiment, its report would have noted that all pensioners, whose pensions were stopped for a while due to wrong names or computer numbers, wrong BVNs and Account Numbers, on presentation of evidence to correct same, have all been cleared and their pensions paid till date.

Now, it beats one’s imagination that a news medium of such standing as the BBC would fail to interrogate or investigate deeper to get to the root of the reasons the four pensioners it interviewed had issues with their pensions.

Perhaps, if this elementary requirement of investigative journalism was adhered to, the BBC would have saved whatever is left of its tainted reputation.

It may interest the BBC to note that in June 2019, the Government of Cross River State commissioned a verification exercise across the 18 local government areas of the state to verify the existence of almost 6600 pensioners receiving close to half a billion Naira monthly as pension.

The exercise held simultaneously in all the local government areas over a period of three months. Verification officers were sent to all the nooks and crannies of the state, including the homes of the pensioners who were not strong enough to visit the verification centers.

For the first time in the history of the State, pensioners were verified through WhatsApp Video from the comfort of their homes. Verifications were also conducted for pensioners outside the state and even those abroad in Canada, USA and the UK.

At the end of the exercise, pensioners were given another one year to present themselves for verification. In June 2020, one year after the initial exercise, 5000 out of the 6600 pensioners had been verified in the field and via video verification. This prompted the Office of Auditor General for Local Governments to release a preliminary report of ‘SUSPECTED ‘GHOST’ PENSIONERS and not DEAD PENSIONERS as the BBC falsely claimed, made up of over 1600 pensioners who had not turned up for verification.

The names of these 1600 pensioners who did not turn up for the verification exercise for varying reasons were published and circulated to allow the affected pensioners come forward to be cleared and verified.

The exercise commenced in June 2020 and has run till May 2021 and has seen 800 of the pensioners cleared, verified and paid their arrears of pension.

Consequently, this is the true case of the four pensioners the BBC captured in its "five months" of investigative report", as well as few others with pension issues:

EWA MBA EKPENYONG
She was in the Auditor-General’s office for verification, but without waiting to be attended to, Mrs. Ekpenyong flared up and manhandled government officials and destroyed government properties.
When asked why she exhibited such erratic behaviour, she blamed it on pressure and then tendered a recorded apology.
Mrs. Ewa Mba Ekpenyong was later verified and her six months pension arrears paid.

GABRIEL EKUNKE OGAH
He was a dismissed Local Government staff on grounds of falsifying his age and documents. Curiously, Mr. Ogah would later wangle his name back into the pension payroll. His wife, Mrs Ekunke Ogah tried to use her position as Head of Local Government Administration, HOLGA to influence her husband’s reinstatement and caused rancor in a public office. It was on this basis that he apologized for his wife’s errant behavior. He has however, been verified and his six months pension arrears paid before the so-called BBC exposé.

CLETUS OFUKA
He never presented himself for physical verification or video verification in Yala and has no Verification Slip. National ID is not a means of identifying a genuine Pensioner. He refused to present himself for verification when over 6000 of his colleagues were verified in Yala LGA and across the State.

CATHERINE NGBORO
She is not a Cross River state local government pensioner because her name cannot be found in the payroll.

MRS MARGARET ABUNG AKPET
She is a pensioner whose pension is regularly paid. Mrs Akpet tried to bribe a staff of the Pension Board to review her pension upward - an illegal and fraudulent act that the Cross River State government does not condone and has currently placed Angela Etta on disciplinary investigation.

It is interesting to note that nowhere did the BBC in its report show pensioners sitting on the floor, sleeping outside or standing in line for hours to receive their pensions in ‘hell’. This is because pensioners in Cross River State are not paid by hand but through bank transfers to their individual bank accounts.

For the avoidance of doubt, the vital documents that identify a genuine pensioner in the State are:

I. A Letter of Retirement

ii. A Pension Computation Sheet and

iii. Pensioners ID Card.

However, fraudulent elements who are either impersonating a dead pensioner or trying to clone a living pensioner's documents lack the above documents and when they meet a brick wall at the Office of Auditor-General for Local Governments in their bid to cut corners, then go to town with frivolous allegations.

Essentially, in the course of the verification exercise, the Office of Auditor General uncovered the following:

*A list of over 700 pensioners who still have not appeared for verification for the past two years and now presumed ‘late’.

*A syndicate of pensioners who bribe pension officials to increase their pensions, alter their retirement details, pay them double pensions, exchange names of dead pensioners with that of their relatives and impersonate dead pensioners with other old people.

*An Association of fellow pensioners who deduct varying sums from fellow pensioner’s pensions amounting to 50m to 60m annually without the knowledge and consent of many of the pensioners thus leaving many unsuspecting innocent pensioners with the the impression that the government is not paying complete pensions.

This nefarious association claims the deductions are for pensioners' welfare, yet nothing gets to those whose pensions are deducted.

The Cross River State government and the Office of Auditor General for CRS Local Governments have taken bold steps to end the systemic rot in pension management but rather than receive commendation, some people with vested interests, benefiting from the rot are engaged in mindless blackmail using the BBC which has fallen for their scam as a tool.

It is on record that since the Cross River State Government uncovered and stopped these corrupt acts it has in addition to paying its over 5000 legitimate pensioners promptly been able to save more funds to cause another 3000 new pensioners to be pay-rolled and they all have been faithfully receiving their pensions monthly via their bank accounts since 2019. A reality that a “5 month BBC investigation” could not discover.

The Genuine Pensioners in Cross River state have expressed their gratitude to the State Governor, His Excellency Senator. Prof. Ben Ayade for his love and compassion towards pensioners that has seen him faithfully release over N24 billion since 2015 to ensure their pensions are paid even through 3 recessions and with one of the lowest Federal Allocations, while other States with higher allocations were owing many months of salaries and pensions.

They are also happy with Mrs Franka Inok, FCA - the Auditor General for Local Governments, for her fortitude and boldness in tackling this systemic fraud in spite of the campaign of calumny against her person and Office, which incidentally is not involved in the payment of pensioners.

Since she came on board, pensioners have never had it so good. In the past, it used to take two years minimum for pensioners to get pay-rolled after retirement and with never ending illegal payments to get their files cleared. Mrs. Inok has put a stop to all that and had waged a constant battle with the Management of the Pensions Board to ensure pensioners retire and are pay-rolled promptly; upholding the oath to serve all people without fear or favor.

The CRSG wishes to thank all peaceful, law-abiding Genuine Pensioners and Senior Citizens for their patience during this ‘clean up’ verification exercise. With the recent introduction of WhatsApp Video Verification technology into our verification process; annual verifications will be simple and easy. Please continue to be law-abiding, shun bribery and fraudulent acts and continue to adhere to annual verification protocols.

In the light of all of the above, it is pertinent that the BBC behaves as a responsible media organisation by retracting its ill-motivated, one-sided documentary which was in essence a personal vendetta against the Cross River State Government by one of its staff; OBAJI ABUNG AKPET whose mother MARGARET ABUNG AKPET is a Cross River State pensioner, currently pay-rolled and receiving her pension.

Five months ago when the BBC claimed to have begun its investigation, all the pensioners as seen in their video had long been paid their pensions.

It is also imperative that the BBC institutes an investigation into the activities of OBAJI ABUNG AKPET and the circumstances that made him mislead the BBC and manipulate its platform to settle his mother’s personal pension issue.

The Cross River State Government frowns at the misuse of the BBC’s platform to twist the African narrative and spread propaganda that paints the African continent, particularly Nigeria, a country that hosts the most black people on earth, in a biased, racist fashion, magnifying our common human problems and keeping silent about our great achievements and advancements.

The BBC is reminded that not one country or continent is immune from the global pension crisis as highlighted in the Guardian UK 2019 Report titled; *UK ELDERLY SUFFER WORST POVERTY RATE IN WESTERN EUROPE* (https://www.google.com/search?q=uk+elderly+suffer+worst+poverty+rate+in+western+europe&rlz=1CDGOYI_enNG914NG914&oq=uk+&aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i57j69i61j69i65l3.1647j0j4&hl=en-GB&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8)

BBC’s failure to take steps to retract its patently flawed narrative on Cross River State Pensioners which verges on lies and blackmail would mean it is willing to sacrifice its credibility in Africa and further confirm reports and complaints in the last four decades of over 40 documented ethical breaches by BBC Reporters (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_controversies).

Ayade deploys drones for medical supplies to hard to reach areas

Cross River state government is set to deploy digital medical drones to hard to reach areas of the state.
The drones will supply drugs and other medical essentials to such areas.
To this effect, the government is partnering a drone delivery company, Zipline.
Speaking Monday during the signing of Memorandum of Understanding with Zipline officials in Calabar, the state governor, Professor Ben Ayade said Cross River was playing a special role in the heath sector, stating that "in 90 days, we will start the delivery of essential drugs to hard to reach areas facilitated by drone delivery systems.”
Assuring Zipline officials of necessary support to carry out their assignment, the governor said: "I want to thank the entire team, I want to thank you for your commitment to this course and we are here to provide you all the necessary support to see that you start on a strong footing.”
He expressed optimism that going forward, Zipline will be a major stakeholder in quality healthcare delivery in the state, especially when the state owned pharmaceutical company, Calapharm, starts running.
"When our pharmaceutical company starts running, it will be a major producer of most of these drugs and we believe that your expertise will really be needed around that area since your delivery time is just about 30 minutes. We have to have them across the three Senatorial districts to guarantee that from the point of dispatch to the point of delivery, we should be able to do 30minutes per package", Ayade quipped.
Zipline's Senior Vice President, Daniel Marfo in his speech commended governor Ayade's strides in the health sector and pledged his company's commitment to sustaining the tempo.
"We are most pleased with your dynamic vision of ensuring that Cross River State leapfrogs the tradition and the norms and by taking a step to the future", Marfo told the governor.
Earlier, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Betta Edu, described the drone delivery system as a game changer "in ensuring that medical supplies, drugs, vaccines can be delivered to health centres in real time and in the shortest possible time so that people can get help when they need it.”

Health / CRS Approach To Fight Against Malnutrition In Children Attracts Int Attention by offiong187: 7:36am On May 06, 2021
*Cross River States New Approach to The Fight Against Severe Malnutrition in children Attracts International Attention.*

Governor Ben Ayade's desire to see his citizens especially young growing kids remain healthy and alive has taken a different format as the State Governor Sen Prof Ben Ayade through his workaholic Health Commissioner Dr Betta Edu has reinstated the governments commitment to ensuring that no child in the State dies of Malnutrition and in a bid to make this a reality, the Honorable Commissioner for Health Dr Betta Edu working with a large network of community tracers (finders) and health workers are rescuing and treating malnourished children in their hundreds.

The active search strategy in Cross River state now has helped in the discovery of over 234 severely malnourished kids so far living in remote parts of the State as well as the State capital. Dr Edu who took the BBC round the State briefed them of the State Government support and speedy interventions that has so far helped in saving the lives of so many kids and in a desire to keep doing more, the Governor has directed that all kids who are victims of this be given urgent medical assistant/attention free of charge while their families are supported to sustain the care.

"Severe malnutrition in children is a serious issue that must be tackled to save lives. Most times this is caused by ignorance. The family doesn’t know how to use the locally available food from farm and river to feed the kids properly. Cross River state is blessed with food so we should have no business with severe malnutrition. Some are due to disease like HIV in children. So we must end transmission of HIV from mother to child!

The health team took it as a responsibility to comb the nooks and crannies of the entire State in search of this kids and during the first and second phase of this exercise, we were able to come to the rescue of over 120 Malnourished children who have received proper medical attention, support and care given to them and the good news is that most of them are well and living a more healthier life than when we first met them.

With over 200 communities visited, Dr Edu revealed that another reason for the increased cases of severely malnourished kids is as a result of the effect of the COVID-19 lockdown which resulted in loss of livelihood as parents could no longer feed their kids. She stated that ignorance is also another factor responsible for this norm as most parents don't have the idea on basic foods like fresh vegetables, fish, periwinkle, etc that could help nourish their kids but rather resorts to tasteless juice, biscuit, custard etc. other factors being Cultural/Religious beliefs, government policies, poor economy of the Country, the health boss has assured cross riverians that the government of Sen Prof Ben Ayade will continue to carryout community engagement/sensitization as well as work with communities to building a resilient health system to help address this menace.

On their part, the parents of the kids who were basically single mothers appreciated the effort of the State Governor Sen Prof Ben Ayade who through the health commissioner has given them hope and a reason to smile again. They thanked Dr Betta Edu for her efforts, support, love and care that has today returned back over 145 children back to a healthy state.

Unyime Monday, a resident of Old Odukpani village, a mother of five and Martina Henshaw, a mother of 4kids and a resident of Egerton who spoke on behalf of the other mothers commended the Health Commissioner for the massive support both financially, morally, medically, and otherwise that has today changed the lives of their kids. "We are grateful to Sen Prof Ben Ayade and Dr Betta Edu for coming all out to look for us in our houses to give us support. She's indeed a mother. today our children can get medical care and even food to eat, not only that.

Some of the severely malnourished kids who got this major medical attention and support as well as palliatives to help address their challenges by the Health Commissioner are; Jesam Esua, Torsam Esua, Obasesam Esua (triplets) all a year and 7months, Grace and Marvelous Henshaw twin of 3months old, ThankGod Francis Elemi 3yrs old, Shedrack Joseph 1yr old, Isaac Joseph 1yr old, Emmanuel Sunday, Offiong Sylvester and many other kids have all been discovered and are accessing medical care now.

The Government of Sen Ben Ayade working through the commissioner of Health Dr Betta Edu and the entire health team made up of dedicated health workers and administrators have continued to show exceptional results in the health sector as Cross River is second best state in 2020, coming out tops in most pragmatic activities implemented in 2020.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, National Tuberculosis, Buruli ulcer and leprosy Control Program Cross River state has 100% coverage for all old cases diagnosed of TB and the only state in Nigeria that has over 60% of Estimated TB cases diagnosed and put on treatment, “this is a huge feat for Cross River state and I must strongly commend the Governor and his team. This achievement is expected to continue in 2021 with the state doing better if more rapid action is taken.” Said the National Cordinator Dr Chukwuma Anyaike when he visited the Honorable Commissioner for Health Dr Betta Edu in her office in calabar to present the score card along side Executive Director of KNCV Dr Odume Bethrand and the Global fund team.

Cally Air: Arrival of 2nd aircraft excites Ita-Giwa, commends Gov Ayade

Princess Florence Ita-Giwa (OON) has commended the Cross River State Governor, Sir Ben Ayade for establishing the State commercial airline, Cally Air.

Ita-Giwa said the arrival of the second Boeing 737, barely three weeks after the arrival of the first Boeing 737, 144 seater aircraft on April 6, is a bold demonstration of Govermor Ayade's commitment to ensuring Cross River maintains her dominance as Nigeria's tourism power house.

"News of the delivery of the second Boeing 737-500, aircraft in the fleet of Cally Air will justifiably excite Cross Riverians. The arrival of the Boeing aircraft marks an epoch in the state's concerted and sustained drive to maintain her dominance as Nigeria's tourism power house," Ita-Giwa lauded.

The Senator who represented Cross River South Senatorial District between 1999 and 2003, noted that "Cally Air is a welcome addition to the unique touristic assets owned and developed by the Cross River State Government."

Ita-Giwa, while urging support for the governor for his audacity to dare, maintained that "the zeal and drive of our governor, Prof. Ben Ayade to consolidate Cross River State's position as the most valuable tourism brand in Nigeria is most remarkable."

According to the former Special Adviser to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo on National Assembly Matters, "His bold initiative for establishing an airline at this time is without a doubt a vote of confidence in our state's preparedness to continue to blaze the trail in tourism and hospitality.

"It behoves on us Cross Riverians now to lend the full weight of our support to the visionary leadership and the various initiatives of our dear governor."

Ayade: Obudu International Airport will be ready within time

Cross River's quest for an international Cargo and passenger airport is inching towards reality with the lightening speed of work at the project site in Obudu.

Governor Ben Ayade, who was impressed with the progress of work, spoke on the many benefits of having such an airport and the fact that it will be ready within time given the number of contractors engaged on the project.

The governor, who spoke with newsmen while inspecting the project, said: "I am quite excited at the progress of work so far, we have five sub contractors working here at the Obudu International passenger/ cargo airport and we hope to be done with all the earthworks in the next four months.

"The contract was only awarded earlier this year and they moved to site about two months ago and they have achieved about 35% in terms of job completion. We are passionate about this project, we are very aggressive about this project, you can see the number of equipment and different sub contractors on site.”

He stressed that the Obudu international Cargo and Passenger Airport and the state owned airline, Callly Air are primed to change the sordid economic narrative of the state by revving up its tourism potentials.

"The Cally Air, which is owned by Cross River, is completely set up to drive traffic into the State. If you take Emirates out of Dubai, you will have no Dubai, therefore we must understand the fact that logistics is key in today's world. No matter how much you want to depend on a digital world, some physical movement remains imperative.”

The Obudu Airport, Ayade, noted, is a vital life wire for the Obudu cattle ranch "because it is obvious that the facility has the capacity to meet Nigerians' tourism needs, that's why we need to create higher footfalls and densification for the Ranch. To achieve this, access is critical. You cannot have access to Obudu Cattle Ranch even if you were to come in from Lagos for example. You will have to land in Calabar and then you have to deal with six hours of travel time to get to the Ranch which is quite discouraging.

"Tourism actually cannot be tolerated, tourism is pleasure. When it becomes tolerance it becomes torture. So we needed to deal with the access because even if I have to put gold in the Ranch nobody will come unless the access to the Ranch is very convenient.”

Beyond increasing footfalls to the Ranch, Ayade said the main objective of the airport is “to create an industrialization process that will give every industry in the state an export potential. You have to invest in naira and earn in dollar for this economy, this country to grow.”
He said given the abundance of groundnut in Bekwara Local Government, his administration is building a vegetable oil factory, which is currently at the completion stage.
According to him, the availability of the international cargo airport will enable the state to export natural vegetable oil to the Middle-East.
The airport will also compliment the state in its desire to export ornamental flowers, that will be grown at the Obudu Ranch Resort, which has an altitude that is good for the planting of flowers.
Rwanda and Kenya, currently make 3 billion dollars and 6 billion euros respectively from the importation of flowers, he said, stressing that the state should make more than that given that neither of the two countries has an altitude as high as that of Obudu Ranch Resort.

The Cross River state governor attributed his administration's ability to execute two capital intensive projects- Cally Air and the airport project- despite lean financial resources to areful planning and intellectual wizardry.

"Nobody will imagine that Cross River State could have an airline and an airport of which the cumulative cost is beyond the carrying capacity of Cross River State. So there is a lot of intellectual money we have brought to bear on the projects", he quipped.

Health / CR Takes Lead As Nigeria Launches Maternal Newborn And Elderly Operation Plan by offiong187: 4:35pm On Apr 17, 2021
*Nigeria Launches it’s Reproductive maternal NewBorn Child and elderly Health & Nutrition operational plan 2021 as CRS takes lead in implementation!*

At a National meeting between key stakeholders in the health sector and the media on best strategy to change the negative narrative around maternal and child mortality as well as poor indices in the health sector of the country, while Taking into consideration some success stories from states like cross River state, Lagos state, Jigawa etc which will serve as best practice for the rest of the country, the Federal Ministry of Health launched the operational plan for RMNCAEH + N 2021 to jump start the system.

It is no news that maternal mortality as well as death in children have continued to raise in Nigeria in spite of Government effort and donor support to the country. There is urgent need to reduce maternal and child mortality as well as build a health system that can clearly change the present picture. These were the issues on the front burner as Nigeria held its First Quarter 2021 meeting of the Nigeria Reproductive Maternal Newborn Adolescent Elderly Health plus Nutrition (RMNCAEH+N) Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Coordination Platform (MSPCP). The objectives of the meeting include: To sensitize and advocate to Media Chief Executives Officers on their roles and responsibilities towards improving health and wellbeing of women, children, adolescents, and elderly to achieve the goal of RMNCAEH+N strategy in Nigeria. The event was also used to disseminate RMNCAEH+N MSP Coordination Platform 2021 AOP and RMNCAEH+N COVID-19 Response Continuity Plan 2020-2022.

The Honorable Minister of Health Dr Osagie called for improvement in health promotion across the country as a veritable tool to improve on health indices. He assured states on support from the Federal Government to create Department of Family Health at the state ministries of Health as well as Health promotion unit. He further said that to achieve Universal Health Coverage we must change strategy as a nation and get all hands on board through innovative programs like emergency ambulance services. The minister of Healrh for state Senator Mamora noted the critical role of the media in promoting quality health care. He acknowledged the role the played in the COVID-19 response and has asked for such proactive efforts to be applied to maternal and child health to get needed improvement.

At the launch the National Chairman of the Nigerian Health Commissioner Forum Dr Betta Edu has called on the Federal Government to work towards system strengthening at all levels, to achieve Universal Health care and reduce maternal mortality we must apply new strategies, we must decentralize the health sector from implementation in Abuja to state based implementation, the work is actually at state level with different states facing great challenges. The issue of Human resource for health as well as Health insurance policy made mandatory for all are critical points that must be achieved. Health promotion must go beyond conventional print and electronic media to other forms of media reach which our people can identify with at the villages and communities. More emphasis should be directed towards implementation at the lower levels. A bottom up approach will change the picture of poor health indices in the country.

Others who spoke were the Health ambassador and traditional leader Dr Iyaha, who commended some states like Cross River state, Lagos and Jigawa states for the many innovative programs to address maternal and child mortality some of which include implementation of Health insurance scheme, collaboration with transport associations to move pregnant women in labour to health facilities, upgrade of health facilities amongs other things. the Dean of Media who advised the Federal ministry of Health to provide more Health information about ongoing interventions through frequent engagements with media.

Out of the 38 sports approved for the tournament, Cross River contigent participated in only 12, winning 9 Gold, 6 Silver and 15 bronze medals making it a total of 30 medals thus finishing 12th on the final medals table, a feat that has not been achieved in the past 22 years.

Speaking  on the feat, elated Commissioner for Sports and Cinematography, Chief Offu E Aya, attributed the success to the unceasing encouragement and support of "our ever-caring digital, youth friendly Governor  His Excellency, Senate Professor Ben Ayade who has kept every stakeholder in the sports cluster on their feet"

" As you can see I am very happy right now because indeed our athletes have made us proud. We came here with less than 70 athletes participating in only 12 sports out of 38 and for them to be able to win this number of medals is quite commendable", the Commissioner further stated.

He said that all lovers of sports in Cross River were grateful to the governor for his encouragement and support to the contingent.

The Commissioner commended the state Sports Commission under the leadership of Hon. Emmanuel Elom for their commitment and individual sacrifices throughout the two weeks events.

Agriculture / In CR Ayade Brings Excitement To Farmers With Easy To Operate Tractors by offiong187: 6:25pm On Apr 10, 2021
In Cross River, Ayade brings excitement to farming with easy to operate tractorization system

By Chidi Onyemaizu

Using West Africa as a case study, the trio of Xinshen Diao, Jed Silver and Hiroyuki Takeshina of International Food Policy Research Institute in a 2016 study entitled "Agricultural  Mechanization and Agricultural Transformation" said: "Mechanized plowing significantly reduces the amount of labor required for land preparation and

typically results in small decreases in the labor required for weeding and harvesting.

"Where hired labor represents a relatively large share of production costs, even smaller

farmers, begin to demand mechanization technology when labor cost starts to rise in order to reduce their labor and total production costs"

Ramrod exactness of the researchers' postulations is long held by His Excellency, Professor Ben Ayade, a scientist of over two decades standing.

And that explains why Cross River under him is in upward swing of Agricultural production.

In today's Cross River, small scale farmers can now farm without much sweat. This is because under Ayade, the era of laboriously tilling the soil is giving way for semi- tractorisation system which allows farmers to effortlessly operate mechanized farm implements themselves.

Notedly, Cross River's agro industrialisation drive is witnessing paradigm shift in tractorization and farming with the introduction of easy to operate semi- mechanized machines.

The hand-operated ploughing machine and rice milling machine introduced by the governor which were recently demonstrated at the Industrial Park, Calabar are primed at further launching the state as an agricultural hub.

The ploughing machine is a utility machine that has the ability to execute multiple farming tasks.

Ayade: "The machine ploughs, so it can plough your soil to enable you plant. It is also a vehicle- all you need is change the steel tyre to normal rubber tyre and put a hook at the back and it becomes a vehicle capable of carrying about five persons in the farm.

"It is also a generator, it can generate electricity. It can equally function as a pumping machine to pump water to water your farm.”

And with the hand operated rice milling machine, small holder rice farmers can now quickly mill their produce and sell to waiting consumers.

Though the semi- mechanized machines are produced in Asia, Cross River is now on the verge of mass producing them for farmers at Construction and Fabrication Academy, Calabar, in the same manner industrialised part of Asia started with the production of mini- machines.

Governor Ayade is irrevocably committed to making farming seamless and attractive to people. The hand operated semi- mechanized machines are expected to go a long way in achieving this.

According to the governor: "We are encouraging young men and women to go into agriculture and take advantage of agricultural techniques my administration has put in place to enable them enjoy themselves while earning a living....What I have done about farming is to make it exciting and pleasant..so there's nothing stopping a graduate from going into farming."

With about 80 percent of industries he has set up since coming to office agro-based, governor Ayade is living out his creed: Hands on the plow, food on the table. Through massive investment in Agro- based industries, he is working to ensure that every family in Cross River is not only able to feed itself but also become an employer of labour.

Ayade's Agricultural drive in the state evidently verges on the principles of the 1876 agro- industrial revolution in Europe.  In his words, "If you have to sweat in Cross River, you don't sweat because you are tilling the soil, you sweat because of pleasure because machines will be doing your job"
