Correspondents Laud Gov Otu over Journalists’ Appointment

By Our Reporter

The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, has commended Governor Prince Bassey Otu for appointing Journalists into key positions in the new government, describing the appointments as putting square pegs in square holes.

In a press statement signed by the Chairman of the Chapel, Mrs Eme Offiong of Voice of Nigeria and the Vice Chairman, Evangelist Joseph Kingston of the Blueprint newspaper, the Chapel said the appointments made so far was a reflection of the Governor’s big heart and that he meant well not only for the media profession but the entire State.

“We have observed with keen interest the appointments made so far by the Governor of Cross River state, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, especially as it concerns the media, and from all indications, the Governor is putting square pegs in square holes. For this, we commend His Excellency for reposing such trust and confidence in our members.

“Bringing in core professionals to man such sensitive areas shows what His Excellency has in store for Cross Riverians, and we believe that with the backing of the Almighty God, such display of pragmatism and vision will translate to a great Cross River in the near future

“Our dear Governor, you have shown character and vision for a better Cross River. Once again, thank you very much, but permit us, as Oliver Twists of old, to ask for more.

“Our colleagues are ready and determined to join hands with His Excellency to ensure his People First manifesto becomes a reality, and with this, we are convinced that indeed the season of sweetness for Cross River people has indeed come.

“We also use this period to congratulate our colleagues who have been called upon to serve. We hereby enjoin them to showcase the professional stuff in them even as we assure them of the continuous support of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ and indeed all Journalists in Cross River State,” the statement stated.

10th Senate: With Over 70 Senators In Attendance, Shettima, Akume Others Reiterate Support For The Akpabio/ Barau Leadership

The aspirations of Senators Godswill Akpabio and Jibrin Barau, for the office the President of the Senate and Deputy President of the Senate on Saturday, inched towards its actualization with further endorsement of the duo by the Presidency led by Vice president Kashim Shettima.

Speaking at the Dinner organized for supporters of the Akpabio-Barau ticket, by the Stability Group, led by former Governor of Ebonyi State and Senator-elect Dave Umahi, Vice president Shettima, for the umpteenth time reiterated the commitment and strong support of President Bola Tinubu and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) to the candidature of Senators Akpabio and Barau for the leadership of the 10th Senate.

According to him, "we are all in support of the emergence of Senators Akpabio and Barau as President of the 10th Senate and Deputy respectively. This support is intended to further engender unity and stability of the country."

The Dinner which held at the Transcorp Hotel in Abuja, had in attendance majority of Senators-elect across party lines, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume and Alhaji Kashim Imam, among numerous others.

Vice president Shettima stated further that
‘’apart from the religious angle, Senator Akpabio is very competent and he has the capacity to lead the 10th National Assembly. At the same time, he is from a very important zone and he is also a man of Christian faith. So, in line with the Constitution of our country and in conformity with the plurality of our union, the party and indeed, the President, thought it fit to support him’’

As a practical demonstration of what should be done to cement the country together as one indivisible entity, Shettima said, ‘’personally, my Chief Security Officer (CSO) is an Igbo man, who had worked with me when I was governor. He has been a dedicated and loyal officer, even in the heat of the Boko Haram attacks in Borno.

"My ADC is a Christian from the North, who has been with me for a very long time. When I appointed him, they said he is too junior by rank to be my ADC, but I insisted and even told them to make him my acting ADC pending when he would be promoted to the rank, he stressed".

The Vice President assured the Senators- elect of his readiness to continue to work for the success and aspirations of the group by talking to those who were yet to join the group which he described as the "winning team".

" I have been campaigning privately for Senators Akpabio and Barau and I will continue to do that till we diliver them on Tuesday. I will be leaving this dinner for another meeting with some senators who are yet to register their support", he disclosed.

In his short speech at the well attended dinner, the chairman of the of the Stability Group, Dave Umahi, thanked the vice president and the SGF for finding time, out of their very tight schedules to visit and solidarise with the Group, assuring them of the readiness of the Senators-elect to work for Nigerians and support the Renewed Hope agenda of the President for the benefit of Nigerians.

In his remarks the SGF disclosed that even before his appointment as the SGF, he was already drumming support for the Akpabio-Barau ticket. He described the Stability Group as where to be, because the Tinubu-led administration needs all forms of support to kick-off on a very sound note.

Speaking at the event, the preferred candidates of the party, Senators Akpabio and Barau, were short of the appropriate words to use in expressing their happiness for the support their aspirations have garnered from their colleagues, when their endorsement was made public by the president and the leadership of the party.

Edwin Clark Drums Support For Senator Akpabio As President Of The 10th Senate.

Elder Statesman and Convener of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum PANDEF), Chief Edwin Clark, has urged the 10th Senate to work towards the unity of Nigeria by electing Senator Godswll Akpabio as the next President of the Senate.

The Ijaw leader made the call when Senators-elect and members of the Stability Group paid him a birthday visit in his home in Abuja and to also seek his blessings for the aspiration of Senator Akpabio as the President of the 10th Senate as part of consultations of critical stakeholders by the group.

According to Chief Clark, “The North cannot do it alone. And we the South cannot do it alone. We should be equal partners. If all the positions are taken by Muslims, then we don’t have a country and the division continues.

“The President of Nigeria is a Muslim. The Vice President of Nigeria is a Muslim. The Chief Justice of Nigeria is a Muslim. The Chief of Staff to the President is a Muslim. The Speaker of the House of Representatives they are going to elect is a Muslim. So what kind of country are we going to have?

“It is time to heal our land and in so doing, what I expect of the 10th Senate to do is to give the position of the Senate President to a Christian Senator from the South South.

“Therefore the President of the Senate should be supported to emerge from the South South. A South South Senator, who is a Christian. So I am happy you are here and you have my blessings to become the next Senate President,” he told Senator Akpabio and his entourage.

In his response, Senator Akpabio assured the Ijaw leader that under his leadership in the Senate, a greater attention would be paid to the Niger Delta Region as the zone which lays the golden eggs for the nation.

“One of the problems we have in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is revenue generation. The law says the oil companies should pay three percent of their yearly budget to the Commission, unfortunately, there was no sanction. So the three percent is just there. If you don’t pay, what happens? Nothing.

“So as it is, we have to beg the oil companies before they can comply with the law. As at now, the oil companies are owing the NDDC $ 5.6bn in the last 20 years. The National Assembly can take steps to enforce the law because the goose that lays the golden eggs deserves some kind of rewards.

“If such a law comes into being then measures can be put in place to develop the region and stop people from dying every year through flooding like it happened in Bayelsa. It would also take care of the environment which has been ravaged through illegal oil bunkering, oil pollution and acid rain.

“We are almost in a war zone, where we are good for the purposes of extracting economic benefits and then abandoned thereafter. The East West road has not been completed because of inadequate funding. Addressing these issues starts from the Parliament.

"I am here today, not to only tell you about the zoning arrangement but to formally tell you that I am coming out once again, to make you, the south south region and the entire country proud and to also receive your blessings and prayers for the task ahead."

Politics / President Tinubu Appeals To Apc Senators-elect To Abide By APC Zoning by offiong187: 8:03am On Jun 08, 2023
Ahead of the inauguration of the 10th Senate next week, President Bola Tinubu has made a strong appeal to all APC senators-elect to abide by the zoning arrangements as announced by the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party last month.

The APC has zoned the president of the Senate to South – South with Senator Godswill Akpabio as preferred candidate and Senator Jubrin Barau from North West as preferred candidate for deputy Senate President.

Addressing over 43 APC senators-elect led by Senator Akpabio at the Aso Rock Villa late last night, President Tinubu made a passionate appeal to every APC senators-elect to toe the lines of the party’s zoning arrangement in electing their presiding officers stressing that this is the right thing to do in support of the renewed hope agenda of his administration.

“At this point of our history and challenges facing us as a new administration, all hands must be on deck to salvage the unpalatable situation facing the nation. We must see the situation as a pan-Nigerian Project for the executive and the legislature to work out solutions to the challenges of the nation” he told the senators-elect.

President Tinubu said the task ahead to finding solutions to the myriads of national problems cannot come from the executive arm of government alone but from jointly working together of the executive and the legislature adding that the senators-elect present at the meeting should reach out and pass the appeal to other APC senators-elect unavoidably absent to toe the party line and put a leash on all personal ambition in favour of party programme and national interest.

“Talk to your colleagues that are not here to tow the party line and give the renewed hope agenda a chance to succeed. The elephant is big enough for all members and indeed Nigerians to have a share of the renewed hope in due course” he admonished.

Earlier on at the meeting which ended around 11pm, Senator Akpabio once again congratulated the President on the successful presidential inauguration and stated that since the party announced the zoning arrangements for the leadership of the National Assembly, the majority of the party’s senators-elect led by him and Senator Barau has reached out in consultation to other senators-elect and senators- elect from opposition political parties with positive result and pledge of support

10th Senate Presidency: Senator-Elect Yari Running from Corruption Investigation and Arrest

---Court Injunction may impede ongoing corruption investigations

As the race for the president of the 10thSenate gather momentum, an aspirant in the Democratic Caucus of the Senators- Elect, Senator-Elect Abdul-Aziz Yari has ran to the judiciary to prevent his re-arrest by EFCC and other anti-corruption agencies for corruption cases he was linked with as well as emerging money laundering investigation into his reckless spending pursuant of his ambition.

Recall that Justice Donatus Okorowo of the Abuja Division of Federal High has barred the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission, ICPC as well as Directorate of State Services, DSS, from arresting Senator Yari under their investigation pending the hearing and determination of an exparte suit he filed before the court.

Sources familiar with the investigations by EFCC stated that the ongoing investigation of the N81 billion fraud by former Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris in which Senator -Elect Yari was linked and previously arrested but released on bail is still pending with more information coming to light of the role of Yari and his associate, one Anthony Yaro of Finex Professional Services believed to be a front to collect N20 billion of the looted fund.

“In addition to new revelations on this massive fraud at the Accountant General of the Federation Office for which some refund has been made, in the EFCC investigations of the ex-governor of Zamfara State, Mr. Bello Matawale, the names of Yari has resurfaced in some massive looting of the resources of that poor state under his watch as governor that we need to further investigate. We are making efforts to locate him for further interrogation. With the court order that we read in the newspapers, we may need our Legal Department opinion on what to do” said the source that want to remain anonymous as he is not authorize to publicly comment on the sensitive case.

In similar manner, the ICPC was about to invite Senator-Elect Yari for his role in the fraud of Paris Club Refund to governors when he was the Chairman of the Governor’s Forum for which about N500million and $500,000 has been forfeited to the Federal Government.

“The Senator Elect from Zamfara West is a subject of inquiry in our office. Beyond the Paris Club Refund Looting, we are also investigating the disclosure that Yari spent at least $700,000 of the N20billion in Saudi Arabia on a trip for lesser hajj” an ICPC source disclosed on why he may have approached the court to prevent his invitation.

Aside from running to the court to frustrate his imminent re-arrest, Yari is also reportedly planning to go underground in the coming days to prevent possible arrest for questioning days before the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Jackson Udom, described the sponsored news item as "unfounded, false and a calculated attempt to smear the seamless relationship between the former Minority Leader and his distingushed colleagues who are very much in support of his aspiration. They should stop the propaganda against Senator Akpabio because no Senator has withdrawn his support from him"

According to the statement, "as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs Senator Akpabio had described the parastatal under his ministry as a cesspool of corruption and NOT the National Assembly.

"He made this remarks whilst justifying the Forensic Audit of the Commission which was ordered by former President Muhammadu Buhari. Infact, he decried a situation where few individuals would corner huge contracts in the agency under the guise of giving them to the lawmakers without the knowledge of the lawmakers.

"There was never a time whether in public or in his closets that he described the National Assembly, which he is a very proud member, as a cesspool of corruption. Those peddling and sponsoring such unfounded allegations are doing so for political gains. Any organized campaign of calumny against Akpabio will surely fail!!!," the statement added.

Yari, Kalu, Izunaso Fight Dirty Over Choice For Senate President.

•••Kalu May Settle For Deputy Senate President

All appears not to be well in the Camp of Senators Abdulaziz Yari, Orji Kalu and Osita Isunazo, on who to finally support for the office of the Senate President, with Kalu said to be threatening Yari's supporters with a defection to the camp of the president.

Trouble started when the trio, who are yet to decide on who to position for the office of the President of the10th Senate met last night in a popular hotel (names withheld) outside the outskirts of Abuja to take a final position on who to support.

It was gathered that after heated arguments among the trio and their sponsors, (which include a serving Presiding Officer of the Senate, who has vowed never to toe the path of the President and National Working Committee(NWC) of the party), those who spoke in support of the former Governor of Zamfara State out numbered those who spoke in support of Kalu and Izunaso.

An enraged Kalu was said to have threatened to dump the group for the President's choices if the group didn't rescind its decision not to support him for the office, since the party had long zoned the office to the south.

He was said to have brought to the notice of Yari's sponsors that it would be the height of religious insensitivity on the path of Yari to want to occupy the office the Senate President when the President and his vice are both Muslims.

It was also learnt that after very strong arguments for and against Yari's ambition, which almost resulted into physical contest, Kalu threatened to walk out of the meeting. Sensing the implications of his walk out and having threatened to dump the group, he was offered the position of the deputy Senate President and Izunaso, chairman of Senate appropriation committee.

It was not clear if the Kalu and Izunazo accepted the offer. Sources at the meeting confided in our reporter that, "with the way things are going on now in our camp, Kalu might dump the group because of their selfishness and insensitivity to national peace and unity.

10th Senate Presidency: Buhari Rejects Yari, Kalu, Izunazo Others

•••says Respect Party's Decision On Zoning of NASS presiding offices

The aspiration of Senator Abdul’aziz Yari to emerge the President of the 10th Senate suffered a major setback on Sunday, with former President Muhammadu Buhari outrightly rejecting his bid for the plum job.

Sources at the ill-fated visit by Yari to Buhari to seek the endorsement of the immediate past President of Nigeria informed our correspondent that Buhari was so angry about the decision of Yari to go ahead with his aspiration forgetting the fragile nature of the country since the emergence of the President and Vice President with Muslim background.

“They came to Daura believing that they could use their money to buy the conscience of the former First family just as they believe that money would get them the position.

“They were all told to go back and respect the position of the President and the party leadership on their choices for the leadership of the National Assembly."

He was said to have reminded Yari that he did not meddle in the affairs of the National Assembly throughout his eight years in office and that it is not now that he is out of office that he will attempt to undermine the independence of the legislature to choose its leaders.

It was also gathered that efforts to drag the former First Lady Aisha Buhari into their anti-party position did not yield any positive result as she was said to have rebuffed the attempt.

She was said to have cited the unity of the country as being paramount to the family of the former president than any personal ambition.

Only five Senators-elect were said to have accompanied Yari to the Daura home of the former President.

Checks revealed that as at the time of writing this report, the camp of Senators Godswill Akpabio and Barau Jibrin has swelled with 5 new converts thus taking the number of Senators-Elect who have so far endorsed the ticket to 75.

According to Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, "despite the number we are still forging ahead with our consultations and appeals to those who are yet to join the Stability Group."

PRESS STATEMENT

Re: 10th NASS Leadership: APC, Tinubu Allegedly Back Out Of Akpabio's Endorsement

The attention of the Stability Group of the incoming 10th Senate has been drawn a sponsored article in some national dialies and online news platforms, purporting the alleged withdrawal of support from President Bola Tinubu for the aspiration of Senator Godswill Akpabio as the preferred choice of Mr President and APC NWC.

Ordinarily, we would not have bothered to dignify the sponsored false publication with a response since the purported withdrawal of support exists only in the sick minds of its purveyors and sponsors, but because of the negative effect it might create in the minds of our teeming supporters, it is therefore imperative that we offer this response.

The purported withdrawal of support from Mr President and alleged possible change of position by APC is a big fat lie baked in oven of those who are yet to come to terms that the Akpabio/ Barau ticket for the leadership of the 10th Senate has come to stay.

Those who scared of coming to terms with the reality on the ground are now resorting to cheap blackmail, name calling, outright lies and falsehood.

The support and endorsement of Mr President and the party leadership for our candidate has not been withdrawn nor being contemplated as erroneously buttressed in the sponsored article.

The sponsors and backers of the story throughout their wild goose chase labored profusely to paint the party's preferred in bad light with no concrete evidence to proof their corruption allegation.

Senator Akpabio has served this country in various capacities from when he was a commissioner, two term governor, Senate Minority Leader and most recent, as a member of the Federal Executive Councils without any blames except tone of allegations which have not been proven until now.

For the records, there is no iota of truth in the allegation of break in the rank of over 70 senators-elect supporting Senator Godswill Akpabio and Senator Jubril Barau APC Endorsed candidacy for Senate President and Deputy Senate President.

The truth is that desperate opposition to the party’s position are now jittery with their imminent failure with President Bola Tinubu now as Leader of APC and President.

The rebels to the party’s position are also jittery that Tinubu as a man of his words, the decision of the party on zoning would remain unaltered with the massive support of Senators-Elect across all geo-political zones with South West Senators-Elect as the arrow heads of Akpabio/Barau ticket.

From our observations in the last few days, particularly after the successful inauguration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the 16th president of the country, the heat is now on the rebels as discreet investigations for money laundering has commenced against some of them who think they can use money to buy some of the over 70 Senators-Elect supporting the Akpabio/Barau ticket.

Finally, the Akpabio/ Barau ticket has continued to enjoy the support of Mr President, party leadership, the Governor's Forum, party stakeholders across party lines and over 70 Senators-Elect, who would cast their votes for the preferred candidates for the NASS Leadership.

One million and one, purveyors and sponsors of fake news, lies and blackmail in the newspapers and online news platforms will not change the decison of the Senators elect, who are more than eager and willing to put the duo of Akpabio and Barau on the driving seats of the National Assembly come 13th June, 2023.

*Obongship stool: Group absolves DSS of blame, berates sponsors of crisis*

By Tessy Ephraim, Calabar

A socio-cultural group, Concerned Efik Youths, have commended the Department of State Service, DSS, for displaying professionalism in handling the crisis which threatened to erupt in Calabar few days ago over a purported proclamation of Chief Tony Ani as another Obong of Calabar.

Recall that some persons had on Monday reportedly proclaimed Chief Ani, who the Supreme Court judgement said was not qualified to vie for the throne, as the new Obong, despite the current Obong of Calabar, His Eminence Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, being formally re-selected by kingmakers and re-proclaimed in line with the January 13, 2023 Supreme Court judgement.

In a statement signed by the State Coordinator of the group, Chief Etetim Archibong, and Secretary, Felicia Asuquo, and made available to our reporter, the group said “We must in all honesty commend the DSS for stepping in to stop what could have resulted in bloodshed.

“Reports at our disposal indicated that the supporters of the dissident group, who purportedly claimed Chief Ani is their Obong, made attempt to invade the Palace of the Obong of Calabar but for timely intervention of the DSS. After the futile attempt, the dissidents sponsored a media attack on the DSS for just nothing.

“We hereby condemn in strong terms such display of desperation. There must be one man on the throne at a time. The re-selection and proclamation of the Obong was done since January by the Conclave of kingmakers who procedurally, in line with the Supreme Court Judgment and the year 2002 constitution of the Etubom Council, proclaimed Edidem Abasi-Otu V.

“The dissidents woke from slumber in May to start another crisis just few days to the inauguration of an Efik son as the next Governor of Cross River. Are they not having a motive to cause unrest in this transition programme? Why are they rising up now after almost four months of the exercise? Why are they calling out the DSS?

“Are they not trying to divert security attention in other to have a field day? We bear witness that the DSS and other security agencies have not been partisan as far as the avoidable crisis over the Obongship stool is concerned. We urge the security agencies not to lose their guard in anyway because we are suspicious of the motives of those people.

“Chief Ani was expressly disqualified by the Supreme Court from voting or being voted for in the re selection process that had since been done, and today, the same man is the person they feel is more qualified to be declared Obong of Calabar. Is that not an utter violation of the Supreme Court judgement?

“Everyone is familiar with the sacred rituals that follow the making of an Obong of Calabar. All the Royal houses are statutorily involved with specific roles. Was that the case in this their show-of-shame in which they purported to have proclaimed Chief Ani? No! what we rather saw in video footages on social media was a complete joke and caricature of the process.

“But at the Palace of the Efik people, it has been an unprecedented show of love and acceptance by well-meaning Efiks and residents of Calabar over the last 3 months after the re-selection of Edidem Abasi Otu V as the Obong of Calabar. Groups and Royal Houses are paying solidarity visits to the Monarch on daily basis and pledging loyalty. Why are those people seeking to shatter the atmosphere of peace in Efik land?” they asked rhetorically

"This Institute is Nigeria's first public institution to be accredited by Certiport as Center for Digital Literacy as well as the first Nigerian institution to conduct digital proficiency tests for various categories of workers

"It is also Nigeria’s first Public Institution to train participants up to IC3 Certification", he said.

The highpoint of the event was the naming of the ultra-modern multi-purpose hall in the institution after Prof Ivara Esu, the deputy governor.

VICE PRESIDENT-ELECT, SHETTIMA ENDORSES AKPABIO, BARAU FOR LEADERSHIP OF THE 10TH SENATE

••• Says, The Choice Of Akpabio Is For National Stability, Unity, And Competence

The aspirations of Senators-Elect Godswill Akpabio and Jibrin Barau for the leadership of the 10th Senate on Tuesday, received a major boost with the endorsement of the duo by the Vice President-Elect Kashim Shettima.

Adressing the over 70 Senators-Elect, who are members of the Stability Group rooting for the emergence of Akpabio and Barau as Senate President and Deputy, led by Senator Ali Ndume, at his campaign office in Abuja, Senator Shettima stated that the choice of Akpabio as the number three citizen in the country was the best decision made by the party leadership and the President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the interest of a stable polity based on competence.

According to him, "politics shouldn't be a means of disuniting our people. It should rather be a means of uniting us. The President-elect and the vice-president elect are both Muslims. It is in the interest of the stability and unity of this country that the next position be given to the christian faith, if not, it would further validate the alleged islamisation agenda of the APC-led administration. It would be perceived as a gratuitous insult on our christian brothers and sisters who stuck out their necks to support us.

" That was why I was quite pleased with the choice of the party leadership that my uncommon brother and leader in the person of Senator Godswill Akpabio should be the number three citizen of this country. The stability of this nation is much more important than whatever political considerations we may think of. We need to have a stabled and united nation before we can talk about politics and positions. This is what our leader could do to unite this country in the current circumstances".

Senator Akpabio, he stressed, "has the exposure, competence and experience to occupy the office of the Senate President in the 10th Senate, ditto Senator Barau, his deputy. Apart from the need for religious balancing, competence and experience also came into play in our choices."

He noted that, "Senator Abdulaziz Yari, is my brother and friend. We became governors together in 2011-2019 on the same political platform, but the nation is superior to other personal considerations. I am quite happy with what I see here today. It is a reflection of those who crave for the stability and unity of this country in a bipartisan manner."

Speaking further, Shettima thanked Governors Nyesom Wike and David Umahi of Rivers and Ebonyi states respectively, for their contributions and support for the party saying, "The Governor-General of the South-South, is a man of honor and integrity, whatever you see is what you get as far as Wike is concerned. These are people that have contributed immensely to the stability of this country. Umahi is the best performing Governor in the South East. He's a man of honor and integrity. He wanted to contest for the Senate Leadership but he had to drop it in reverence to the party's decison."

Shettima promised to get in touch with APC Senators-Elect, who are yet to come on board with the choices of the party. "I have seen the names of those who are yet to join us. Be rest assured that we will positively engage them and make them see reasons why they have to come on board. My principal, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a veteran politician. He knows how to go about bringing them into the fold before the inauguration of the National Assembly."

In his response, Akpabio, on behalf of the Solidarity Group congratulated the Vice President-elect on his election and described his choice as the incoming Vice President as the right step in the right direction saying," your choice is putting a square peg in a square hole". He also thanked the Vice President-Elect for hosting the group in his campaign office.

The former Senate Minority Leader, informed Shettima that members of the Group were drawn from all political parties who have decided to come together to produce the leadership for the 10th Senate inorder to stabilize NIGERIA, not on the basis of political party, religion or tribe but on the basis of conviction based on integrity.

He said the Stability Group believed that the success of the Tinubu- Shettima administration would be the success of Nigeria. “We know very well that once somebody crosses the door into the Red Chambers, you are no longer a Senator of a political party but a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Stability Group members are going to work with the incoming administration to evaluate the policies and ensure the stability of the country.

“We are not here because the party zoned the position to the most ranked Senator from the South South, Senator Godswll Akpabio. We came together to ensure national cohesion and the stability of the polity and to ensure that NIGERIA moves forward in the right direction,” he said.

The APC consensus candidate for the position of the President of the 10th Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio and his Deputy designate, Senator Jubrin Barau on Tuesday led over 40 Senators under the aegis of The Stability Group to consult with the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee at the party's national secretariat in Abuja.

The APC had nominated Akpabio as senate president and Barau as his deputy, a development that triggered debates with a few dissenting voices among the Senators.

But as part of moves to address the situation, Senators Akpabio, Barau, and over forty other senators arrived at the Muhammadu Buhari House in Abuja on Tuesday to meet with the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu Adamu and other members of the National Working Committee of the party.

They came in two coaster buses for the meeting with the NWC presided over by the National Chairman Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting held behind closed doors the Director General of the Akpabio-Barau Campaign Organisation, Senator Ali Ndume disclosed that the Group was at the APC National Secretariat to thank the National Working Committee of the party for endorsing Senator Akpabio and Senator Barau to lead the 10th Senate.

Senator Ndume expressed optimism that the Group had the numbers to win the election following wide consultations with Senators across party lines.

Speaking in the same vein Senator Akpabio said he had reached out to his fellow Senators in the APC and other parties and said majority of the Senators have signed up under the Stability Group to give their support to himself and Senator Barau as his Deputy.

He said further consultations would be held with more Senators and other critical stakeholders in the coming days.

10TH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY LEADERSHIP

UPDATE:

• Senate president, speaker can’t be of same faith
It will fuel Islamisation agenda narrative - Shettima

...The leadership of the forthcoming national assembly must be inclusive, for stability of the nation

The Vice-president-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima, has urged lawmakers-elect to accept the zoning arrangement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the leadership of the 10th national assembly.

Shettima spoke during a meeting some of the house of representatives members-elect on Friday.

Earlier this week, there were some within APC after the party nominated Godswill Akpabio, a former minister of Niger Delta affairs, and Abbas Tajudeen, a house of representatives member from Kaduna, for the national assembly leadership positions.

Akpabio was nominated for president of the senate, Tajudeen was endorsed for the speaker of the house of representatives.

The party also nominated Barau Jibrin, senator representing Kano north, as deputy senate president, and Benjamin Kalu, a lawmaker from Abia and current house spokesperson, as deputy speaker.

Some lawmakers are not too comfortable with the zoning arrangements but the ruling APC party has been working toward mitigate the rift.

Speaking during the meeting with lawmakers-elect, Senator Shettima said APC seeks to avoid a situation where all the top officials of the incoming administration would be of the same faith.

He said the circumstance could “validate the negative narrative of the Islamisation agenda of Nigeria”.

Shettima added that the leadership of the forthcoming national assembly must be inclusive because the “stability of the nation is much more important than any other consideration”.

“What we are trying to avoid is a situation whereby the number one citizen, number two citizen, the number three citizen, and the number four citizen are all of the same faith. That will lend credence, and validate the negative narrative of the Islamisation agenda of Nigeria,” the vice-president-elect said.

‘This is why my principal, a fair-minded leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is more inclined towards having the number three citizen from the South south or the South-east. Even in the current circumstance that we find ourselves in, the stability of the nation is much more important than any other consideration.

“All other considerations have to be relegated to the background because we are talking about the stability of the nation.

“We are talking about inclusivity, we are talking about togetherness because nation-building is a continuous work in progress and politics is about perception, it is about optics. I am quite glad that Benjamin Kalu will emerge as the deputy speaker. The hope for the black man rests with the people of this country.”

The Kano monarch was in Calabar for his installation as the new Pro- Chancellor of the University of Calabar.

According to him, "I wish to express my deep appreciation to the Governor for appointing Northerners, especially Kano indigenes into his government.

"There is a Commissioner in the Governor's cabinet who is from from Kano. This is heartwarming. I urge other Governors from other parts of Nigeria to work towards national cohension by taking a cue from Governor Ayade and appoint aides who are not necessarily indegenes of their states"

It has created a void in the family.”

We went for best, says Ayade on Cross River governor-elect

Cross River state governor, Professor Ben Ayade has described the state's governor-elect, Senator (Prince) Bassey Otu as the best material for the state.

The Governor spoke at the State Executive Council Chamber of the Governor's Office in Calabar while receiving Prince Otu, his deputy, art. Hon Peter Odey, the National and state Assembly members-elect of the APC who came to show him their Certificates to Return.

According to Ayade, "in traditional Nigerian politics, you install your boy, a puppet so that you can control him afterwards, but here in Cross River, we went for the best; our governor-elect, (Prince) Senator Bassey Otu is the best.”

The Governor insisted that credit for the success of Senator Otu at the governorship election should go to God "because all praise belongs to Him on this victory. Let us give God the praise. I give my gratitude to God for being able to have a successor, not just a successor but a successor from the Southern Senatorial district.

"We came out victorious even when people stood against our Back to South agenda"

He said his fervent wish and prayer for the incoming governor is for him to outperform and outshine him in office.

"I know Bassey Otu has a good heart. I know he has a spirit of enterprise, the power of innovation, so l encourage him to be a super shining star so that Ayade would just look like a joke where you are.

"I believe that we have got a very good man in Senator Bassey Otu. Otu is the finisher, the polisher of the solid foundation we have laid; he has the understanding of the gargantuan master plan of Cross River State.

"It is my wish to see you do much more than I have, while l sit back to provide any kind of support you so wish.

"You have to prove that the Back to Bouth agenda was not political but spiritual. I wish you much better the circumstances of service which l went through. I don't wish you be a governor with the circumstances and finances that l met", the Governor said.

Further admonishing the governor-elect, Ayade said: "I believe that we have gotten a very good man in Senator Bassey Otu. Ayade's regime would come to nothing, Otu is the polisher and finisher and has the understanding of the gargantuan master plan of Cross River State.

"You must show that all of us that put our destinies in your hands made the right decision.”
