Why not do it like this. Send physical adequate foodstuff to him. Pay all his departmental bills, textbooks and any other academic bills including hostel fee.
Then simply send him pocket money. Just pocket money you feel will be okay, because you have already transport foodstuff to him.

I would have loved to experiment it, but he is entering his 400 level next week.
