Car TalkRe: Nigerians Dont Care About High Mileage? - Is It True by ogaibe1(m): 2:13am On Jul 27, 2013
aodey: The thing that baffles me with the whole car buying business is the failure of the Nigerian customer in doing simple research on the Internet. America is an open society with information readily available at your fingertips.
Here is my advise to car buyers. First determine what type of car you want and what equipment and features you want with it. This is something a lot of people don’t appreciate. For example the price difference between a 2013 Toyota Highlander and the Limited edition for the same car and year is over $8000. The best place to do the research is www.edmunds.com. You will see all US cars, model and prices there. Then you can check other website such as www.autotrader.com or www.cars.com to view cars for sale by dealers and owners all over the United State. Use any US zip code to do your search. This would give you an idea of what you can afford. Once you have an idea of what you want, make sure you have a few choices if your money is limited. Then contact a reputable dealer. Make sure it is someone you know or you know somebody that can vouch for him or her.
Ask the dealer/broker to give you the landing cost of the car to Lagos. Landing cost is the price of the car + his commission/profit + transportation to a US port + Shipping cost to Lagos. There might be other cost such as taxes and other fees that might have to be included also. Do the clearing your self or ask him/her to recommend a clearing agent in Lagos or for him to find out the clearing cost of the car for you. This is the actual cost of the car. Now shop around in Nigeria. See if it makes sense for you to buy the car in Nigeria or order it from the US. Remember that the whole car buying experience from America will take a minimum of 6 weeks. Average is 2 months from my experience. The whole experience is better when you have an informed buyer so do your homework 1st.
My man you can advise all u want unfortuntely many nigerians want a car they cant afford so if the see the same car somewhere for a cheaper price they will never believe what you are telling them, so the scrupulous dealers always wins the battle because its all about the price. another thing nigerians do is if the car your selling has a little mark, they will destroy it with thier mouth a tactics so that you can practically give away the car. it goes both ways nobody is completely truthful in this business.
PoliticsRe: Fire Explosion Changed A Nairalander's Thoughts About Nigeria by ogaibe1(m): 7:55pm On Jul 23, 2013
nenergy: Hmmm, NIGERIA MUST SUCCEED O! I used to believe that my personal success wasn't dependent on the success of Nigeria. But the tanker explosion at Ajah (Lagos) this morning, woke me up from my delusion. The scene was like something from the movie 2012. People running helter-skelter, traders abandoning their wares and a massive bellow of fire raising to the sky. For 15 minutes my life was disrupted. I forgot about work, my book project and even the plans i have for my July salary. When calm return and my life began to piece itself together, i thought to myself; "If i'm to have peace, Nigeria must have peace. If i'm to succeed, Nigeria must succeed." I pray, may the peace of God reign in Nigeria. May those who have sworn to trouble Nigeria be troubled till they abandon their devilish campaign. May God guide our leaders right and help them lead us to the promise land. Amen! Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Good but the leaders your talking about doesnt care about you or nigeria, although the will drive on the same road with thier big cars and they see will send their children abroad, the only thing that will change nigeria is revolution.

deeptesting: Pretty sure the people in power seem not to understand the feelings of the people....The people are fed up, no road, no light, no water, no job, no food, no medical facility, young and eligible men cannot marry and grow their family, the frustration is running people crazy...the youths as a result of the artificial poverty created by the rulers have thrown all moral values to the dogs and are doing the unmentionable within and outside the country just to keep body and soul together, yet the rulers because we dont have leaders keep waging uneccesary war among themselves to hold on to power rather than resiging to be elder statesmen, they have become so entrapped in the pursuit of their selfish interest that they are all suffering from terminal hallucination, thinking that they are the smartest people, who can perpetually keep the youths in the background, while using those that are gullible as political thugs to achieve their selfish interest and disenfranchise the educated with lack of jobs. We take consolation in the fact that the only constant in life is CHANGE...Nigeria will not be the least.

I hope it doesnt happen this xtmas cause i dont want to be stuck in nigeria when i come in for my vacation. If the government cares about the masses all the money they have been carrying and buying houses in the foreign country is what they should have used to improve the infrastruture and create jobs for the youth. I know everyone is watching what is going on in egypt, it takes courage to hold these poeple that are so called leaders responsible. Its quite unfortunate that a whole graduate will stay at home for 2 years havent gotten a job and the government is quite ok with it.

There is a reason why spyder880 decided to open this thread is to show people who are still in the process of building to check thier pockets and have an idea of the cost and adjustments of building this house, for those who have already made some mistakes to learn from thier past mistakes especially trusting families to handle your project. Breaking down the cost of materials and showing how he was able to reach to this extent is what is neccesary to gain the trust of the owner of the project. Honesty is what is lacking in Nigeria some of us nigerians living in diaspora are duped everyday into believing that building in nigeria supposed to cost exhorbitant prices. Some people inflate the cost of materials especially when someone in a family is handling the contract. So this thread is established so that people can become aware of prices of materials,so that they can ask questions and make adjustments as needed in who is handling their project.
prince_onx: What you suggested above is some of the reason why we have big problem in Nigeria. Folks (especially in power/government) want to keep people uninformed and just wake up one morning and announce this crazy amount which runs in billions with capital B lately. Every project both house, school, hospital, just name should come with a budget! That's how it's done in civilized places and that budget is an estimate! Close estimate from someone that know and have knowledge of what they doing and in most cases, it goes up a little or you save a little. While in Nigeria, you see someone with N3m laying a foundation for a story building of 4 flats and end up not finishing the house or struggle to roof it half way. A friend was quoted less than even half the real price/cost of his project simply bcox his uncle claim/said he will be discouraged to build if giving or quoted the real cost. Now he's involved in a project way bigger than him for years now! This is also common among my people (Igbos). There are so much uncompleted mansions in my village while some of the owners live in 2 rooms or face me I face you in Lagos and when they visit home they stay in their fathers house. Anybody planing to kickoff a project such as this need to have a quote/estimate ad also need to bear in mind that for the most part especially in naija might go up.

My dear let me tell you something because I don't know if you are in health care profession. The truth hurts sometimes, there is no defense when it comes to incompetence of Nigerian doctors, now we can blame it on either poor training or lack of equipment, Most of you always bring religion into the whole discussion "You cant escape your destiny" so the lord has told you that it is the woman time to die?. That's one problem about Nigeria, when doctors make mistake we blame it on death and destiny, to me that is b/s.

I will advice any woman who has the opportunity to travel outside the country in terms of ceasarian section, most of the doctors dont know what they are doing in nigeria and there are no laws protecting patients in nigeria, they are not held liable for anything so they continue to kill nigerians at will.

spyder880 i have followed your past building contracts and the threads. I like the way you detail items. if you are able to accomplish this project with 8.8 million like you said i have a contract for you. Actually i have a cousin who is sucking me dry right now because i am not around for my six bedroom self contained house that am currently building. But i have plans next year of a duplex. I wish i knew about you. Sometimes is better to trust a stranger than family members because they feel that if you live abroad then the money is flowing. I think there are still some nigerians that can be trusted.

Francisco real estate prices.

A spot in the city's trendy South Beach neighborhood sold last week for $82,000, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on Thursday (http:///175w2RE ).

The 8- by 12-foot parking space is in an enclosed garage in a condominium building near the San Francisco Giants' ballpark. A Porsche SUV was parked in it on Thursday. The Chronicle said the unidentified buyer did not respond to interview requests.

While it may seem like a lot of money, real estate agents said parking could be a good investment in densely packed San Francisco, where vehicle spaces go for a premium. They can add as much as $100,000 to the purchase price of a property or be rented out at rates of $400 to $450 a month — the going rate in South Beach.

"We had a very good response right out of the gate," said Sean Sullivan with Climb Real Estate, which sold the spot. "It was only in the market two weeks."

Sullivan said he sold a parking spot in the same building at the height of the last real estate boom for $95,000.

Overall, the city has seen real estate prices climb. Home prices in San Francisco grew by 22.2 percent in March compared with a year ago, second only to Phoenix among U.S. cities, according to The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index released in May.

Home prices in the wider, nine-county San Francisco Bay area posted a 12th straight month of double-digit price increases last month, according to research firm DataQuick. DataQuick said Thursday that the median price for new and existing houses and condominiums reached $519,000 in May, up 30 percent from the same period last year.

Condos in the South Beach area are going for $1,000 a square foot, the Chronicle reported. At 96 square feet, the parking space was a relative bargain at $854 per square foot.

Sullivan said the building where the parking spot was sold was built before the city restricted spaces to one per unit. It is one of the few buildings that allows nonresidents to own a spot.

The owner has a deed and must pay property taxes and homeowner association dues.

The sale was all cash.

Nairaland General'it Was Horror':a Nigerian Man Survives 2 Days In Air Bubble Under Capsized Boat by ogaibe1(op): 6:51am On Jun 13, 2013
B

WARRI, Nigeria — After two days trapped in freezing cold water and breathing from an air bubble in an upturned tugboat under the ocean, Harrison Okene was sure he was going to die.

The ship's cook Okene, 29, was on board a tugboat when it capsized on May 26 due to heavy Atlantic ocean swells about 20 miles off the coast of Nigeria.

Of the 12 people on board, divers recovered 10 dead bodies and one remaining crew member has not been found.

Somehow Okene survived, breathing inside a four foot high bubble of air as it shrunk in the waters slowly rising from the ceiling of the tiny toilet and adjoining bedroom where he sought refuge, until two South African divers eventually rescued him.

"I was there in the water in total darkness just thinking it's the end. I kept thinking the water was going to fill up the room but it did not," Okene said, parts of his skin peeling away after days soaking in the salt water.

"I was so hungry but mostly so, so thirsty. The salt water took the skin off my tongue," he said.

On the day of the capsize, Okene said he was in the toilet when he realized the tugboat was beginning to turn over. As water rushed in and the tugboat flipped, he forced open the metal door.

"Three guys were in front of me and suddenly water rushed in full force. I saw the first one, the second one, the third one just washed away. I knew these guys were dead."

What he didn't know was that he would spend the next two and a half days trapped under the sea in that tiny bathroom.

"I couldn't see anything," said Okene.

"But I could perceive the dead bodies of my crew were nearby. I could smell them. The fish came in and began eating the bodies. I could hear the sound. It was horror."

Meanwhile, divers were searching for crew members, assuming they were all dead.

On the afternoon of May 28, Okene heard them.

"I heard a sound of a hammer hitting the vessel. Boom, boom, boom ... I hammered the side of the vessel hoping someone would hear me."

Then divers broke into the ship. "I was waving my hands and he was shocked," Okene said of the rescuer who noticed him.

Okene said he reached the surface more than 60 hours after the ship sank and spent another 60 hours in a decompression chamber where his body pressure was returned to normal. If he had been exposed immediately to the outside air he would have died.

Okene is not sure he will return to the sea.

"When I am at home sometimes it feels like the bed I am sleeping in is sinking. I think I'm still in the sea again. I jump up and I scream," Okene said, shaking his head.

BusinessNigerian Central Bank Bars Loans To Big Debtors Post-crisis by ogaibe1(op): 9:34pm On Sep 24, 2012
.....LAGOS (Reuters) - Nigeria's central bank has banned loans to 113 firms, including the country's two major airlines, which have failed to repay debts after a 2009 financial crisis that nearly brought down the banking system, an internal document obtained by Reuters on Sunday said.

The ban covers firms whose bad debts were absorbed by state-backed "bad bank" AMCON as part of efforts to draw a line under a credit crisis that nearly sank nine lenders. The companies have yet to make good on those loans, the memo said.

Nigeria's central bank injected $4 billion in 2009 to support nine lenders it judged to be so weakly capitalized they posed a threat to the whole economy. Since then, a number of banks have been restructured, and AMCON, the Asset Management Company of Nigeria, absorbed their toxic assets.

"As part of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)'s efforts at strengthening financial stability, it has become necessary to stop debtors who failed to repay their loans to banks and had those loans transferred to AMCON from further enjoying credit facilities ... until they fully repay," the memo said.

"Banks are prohibited from approving or disbursing any new credit facilities to all persons and organizations on this list," it said, adding that any breach would be punished by a fine equal to the value loan and possibly additional penalties.

Names on the list included: Zenon Petroleum, privately owned by billionaire oil tycoon Femi Otedola, the majority shareholder in listed petrol firm Forte Oil ; and MRS Holdings , which holds former Chevron downstream assets and is owned by Sayyu Dantata, brother of Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote.

They owe 192.4 billion naira ($1.22 billion) and 120 billion naira respectively, the document said. The list also included Nigeria's biggest national air carrier, Arik Air, with 85 billion in debts.

Neither Otedola nor Dantata were available for comment. A spokesman for Arik Air, Ola Adebanji, said the company had not been informed.

"There is a relationship between Arik and AMCON ... We have not received any document from CBN concerning that," he said.

Arik suspended its operations last week over a spat with unions, the airport authorities and the aviation ministry, partly over alleged unpaid dues, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The airline resumed flights on Sunday.

Nigeria's only other functioning major airline, Aero Contractors, was also on the list but was not immediately reachable for comment.

AMCON nationalized three failing banks last year. It plans to refinance its 1.7 trillion naira ($10.80 billion) in repackaged bad loans into bonds when the debt expires next year. The banking crisis underscored structural flaws in Nigeria's economy, where powerful oligarchs are often accused of acting above the law, diverting company funds to personal interests and failing to honor huge debts.

President Barack Obama said Wednesday he supports same-sex marriage, raising the political stakes on an issue in which Americans are evenly split.

The announcement, long sought by supporters of same-sex marriage, puts Obama squarely at odds with presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

"At a certain point I've just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married," Obama said in an interview with ABC News.

Obama once opposed same-sex marriage. He later indicated his views were "evolving." His announcement Wednesday in support of same-sex marriage was the first by a sitting president.

i returned to nigeria from california this last december but my flight was thru dubai, unfortunately for me i didnt get information about the customs and thier particular checks on people that returned thru dubai, one of my boxes was broken into and three of my blackberry phones were missing. I was also stopped by the customs and they made me pay duties on three laptops i brought in for my family members. They insisted that i should pay because it is for sale. I ended up paying 75 thousand naira on top of my stolen blackberry phones. I learned my lesson, you must make inquiries before returning home if you have brothers and sisters who are aware of the airport troubles, you might survive. This is for informational purpose for people planning to travel to nigeria but dont have a clue abt the customs and how stolen goods are common in MMA.

.Check for the Market Value of the vehicle You want to Pre Order.

Every Car has a Market Value, and The Price it is Worth Vis a Vis Condition, Mileage, Number of Owners, etc

You can check this using www.kbb.com

If a Pre Order Seller/Dealer Offers You a Very Cheap Price RIDICULOUSLY Lower than the Market Value, Ask yourself WHY.

Scammers Would Offer you Ridiculously Low prices to Attract You, Its a Pre order System Whereby you don't see what you're Buying Right Away.

You are Often told that the VERY Low Price is a very RARE offer, You may also Hear that the Car is limited in quantity or Some other way.

You are told that you MUST ACT QUICKLY or Someone Else will Buy the Car.

However, No Matter the Explanation Given, Your Best Course of Action is to Walk Away. This is Especially True if you do not have time / means to verify either the Seller Or the Vehicle Offered.
