Whatever reason made Peter Obi pay a courtesy visit to Sheik Ahmad Gumi unravels his desperation to clinch power come 2023. For how could a "supposed" saint fraternize with Gumi, who is a "supposed" sympathizer of bandits notwithstanding how he (Obi) has paraded himself to be one of a kind on the Nigerian political scene? This action insinuates that he could easily pass for a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

It is interesting to see that Obi’s fellowship with a bandit apologist, Sheik Gumi, has been justified by Obi’s supporters all in the name of building bridges, in spite of the fact that they had heavily criticized other people who had done the same in the past. One is then forced to ask, "Who is deceiving who"? Undoubtedly, aspirants will have to pay homage to leaders of thought and go across different states to meet the electorate and make appeals to seek support in their homesteads. However, it is an outrageous act of desperation and insensitivity to pay courtesy visits to enablers of the rot that Nigeria is. Sheik Ahmad Gumi is anything but a statesman by his expressions and speculations hovering around him. The controversies surrounding his mediatory role between the bandits and the federal government put him in a shady position and is not worth being recognized as an elder statesman deserving of courtesy visits from standards-bearers.

Sheik Gumi's utterances in defence of the bandits and terrorists make him a person of interest in that regard. On several occasions, Gumi has been so around the bandits that sometimes he seems to be offering sympathetic accounts and justification for their criminal actions. Despite the untold hardship on families and communities through their villainous fierce attacks, kidnappings for ransom and mindless killings, the Sheikh has blamed everyone but the rebels. Instead, he called for the federal government to grant amnesty to the bandits, just like the Niger delta militants were granted. If not for sheer nepotism and insensitivity, why would Gumi compare the plight of the Niger Deltans to the unjustifiable actions of the bandits? Similarly, he made a divisive claim that non-Muslim soldiers were responsible for killing and attacking bandits. It is obvious his statement was intended to incite disaffection amongst the ranks of the soldiers. This same Gumi has blamed students for their kidnap by bandits, thereby overlooking the real actors of the crime.

Why then should Obi, a preacher of hope, pay a visit to someone that has helped in making Nigeria a hopeless place for its citizens? Did Obi not verify that Sheik Gumi is a pro-bandit advocate and should not be recognized as a political leader in the scheme of things? Fraternizing with Gumi, a thorough-going bigot and a bandit apologist, in a bid to appeal to his support base gives a hint that Obi will not be able to call the sheikh out for his excesses, and maybe even yield to the appeasement of Gumi’s ‘beloved’ bandits, should he become the president.

If Obi is any inch sincere about his transformation agenda for Nigeria, he would not want to be in association with someone like Sheik Gumi. Visiting Sheik Gumi, it indicates that the man simply cannot stand by what he preaches and it is good that Nigerians examine issues like this, to avoid being blind-sighted.
