Well, we have to follow what Jesus said, not what the world says;

You are confusing Christian persecution from tribulation. Persecution has always been there and it's individual bases but tribulation is for a definite period which have not began.
Now understand the difference and something here. For the rapture Jesus comes and we meet Him in the cloud according to 1 Thess 4:15-17
But the scripture you shared in Math 24 Jesus will come down to the earth and the whole world will see him. For the rapture nobody is seeing Him and we will meet him there in the cloud.

Let me answer your first question. Before the death of Christ people lived before and they are those who will make even. Now Jesus Christ went through suffering for the salvation of men that you don't have to do anything or sacrifice to be saved. By believing and accepting Him you will be saved. Now at that time of the great tribulation no man will be able to take is own life. Except you were killed by the anti christ that is how anybody can die. That is why every body will pay for their own salvation through suffering. They will persecute everyone who will not receive the mark until many will not be able to bear the pain and suffering. Some will take it and some will not.
Those who will be persecuted at that time to receive the mark of the beast are the Saints of those times. The difference between the rapture and the second coming.

Then you must understand Jesus revelation about the last days in Math 24. That chapter reveals several things so you must put all the scriptures together. Some people think that Christians are to go through the tribulation period to taste their Christianity. That is one of the most weird and awkward believe one could have. The tribulation Saints at that times will be people that will believe in Jesus afterwards because of what they have seen or experience at the rapture. The rapture will make doubters to believe in Jesus but it will be too late for them because they will have to pay for their salvation with their own blood.
