Politics / Re: “LNG Bailout Fund Was Saved By Jonathan”- PDP Tells Buhari by ogba20: 1:44pm On Jul 09, 2015
naijapips03:
Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) insists that contrary to claims by the Presidency, the $2.1 billion Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) component of the bailout for states was actually saved by the immediate past President Jonathan-led PDP administration.

The party said in actual fact the LNG dividend stood at $5.6 billion even before the handover date of May 29th and would have been shared but for the insistence of former President Goodluck Jonathan that it be left for the incoming administration to manage.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh in statement on Wednesday thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for making it possible for Nigerians to know that monies were left behind by the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

The party said despite attempts by the APC-led administration to hide the truth, the issuance of the bailout with funds from the LNG proceeds and the Excess Crude Account (ECA) has exposed the fact that the PDP administration actually left behind huge sums of money, contrary to the impression earlier given to Nigerians and the international community that the new administration met a virtually empty treasury.

“It is gratifying to note that gradually the evidence of monies left behind by the PDP-led administration is coming to public light despite effort by the new government to hide the facts.

The public had been made aware that $2 billion was left in the ECA for which the Accountant –General and the APC confirmed approvals for the withdrawal of $1.7 billion.

“We know that surely, though slowly, a lot of other monies saved by the PDP and which are now under the control of the APC government will eventually be unveiled by this administration themselves and without any effort on our part whatsoever.

The PDP says it believes that President Buhari must have realized that he was earlier misdirected on the actual state of the nation’s finances and should as a respected statesman apologize to his predecessor, President Goodluck Jonathan who also ensured that he handed over to him a peaceful and stable environment to operate.

The party said “President Buhari as a leader on whose shoulders lies the mandate of the Nigerian people and the burden of governance for the next four years should strive to disentangle himself from the intrigues, propaganda, blackmail and machinations of some leaders in his party and focus on delivering on his campaign promises for which he was elected.”

The PDP also urged the APC as a party in power to rise above board and endeavor to be honest in its dealings, especially if it wants Nigerians to take it seriously.

It said a situation where a ruling party will resort to a dishonorable act of altering a statement where it earlier acknowledged the approval for the withdrawal from the ECA, just to hide the truth, leaves much to be desired.

Politics / Re: Bailout: APC Tells Fayose Not To Be Ungrateful by ogba20: 9:58am On Jul 09, 2015
Frankiss44:
The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has criticised Governor Ayodele Fayose over his recent comment on the bailout fund released by President Muhammadu Buhari to states, saying it is ingratitude taken too far.
Fayose and Buhari

Fayose and Buhari

Fayose said the bailout fund out of which Ekiti State benefited in billions of naira, is not a bailout but an amount due to Ekiti State from the federation account.

This is an irresponsible statement coming from a governor over which his colleague governors, labour unions and all well meaning Nigerians were full of gratitude to the President for the bailout. Fayose as usual, is up to one of his antics whenever money is involved.

His statement that Ekiti wage bill is N2.6billion has given him away as someone who wants to shortchange Ekiti people again. For the avoidance of doubt, the wage bill of Ekiti State workers is N1.6 billion naira and if we include subventions to higher institutions, pensions and political appointees’ salaries which is N600 million naira, everything amounts to N2.2 billion naira. We wonder where Fayose got the figure of N2.6 billion, Olatunbosun stated.

”We have said it many times that Mr. Fayose is paying some election contractors and he has not denied this categorically. His latest inflation of the wage bill of Ekiti State is to prepare the minds of Ekiti workers that he would not use the bailout fund to pay their backlog of salaries and allowances even though he lies to the outside world that he was not owing Ekiti workers.”

We are aware that Fayose is yet to pay Ekiti workers September 2014 salary, 2014 leave bonus, June salary, March to June co operative deduction, core subject and rural allowance from March to June while he has not released 4 months subventions to Ekiti State University. He is also owing pensioners a backlog of allowances as well as traditional rulers.

Fayose’s claim that the bailout fund is Ekiti State is entitlement is very unfortunate as the fund is not Ekiti State allocation from the federation account but a special intervention fund over which he was supposed to be grateful to the President. Fayose’s mentor, former President Jonathan did not give such bailout to any state in Nigeria. This has revealed that Fayose has not stopped his hate campaign against the President even after electoral campaign is over. At any given opportunity, Fayose has continued to lambast and embarrass the President.

We also aware that Fayose is the coordinator of operation bring the Buhari-led Federal Government down where N400 million is contributed monthly by each PDP state for the devious project.

Fayose’s outbursts is ingratitude of the highest order which does not represent the collective opinion of Ekiti people who are always appreciative of good deeds. President Muhammadu Buhari should be praised for directing that all monies should be paid into the federation account from where the bailout money came from. This is a result of his anti-corruption drive.

Politics / Re: Unpaid Salaries: 'Bailout Funds Not Jonathan's Savings,' Presidency Blasts PDP by ogba20: 9:48am On Jul 09, 2015
lolaxavier:
The Presidency has criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over its demand that former President Goodluck Jonathan should be given credit for funds recently approved to be shared between Nigeria’s states and the Federal Government.

The Presidency also accused the PDP of creating unnecessary controversy over “the well-intentioned effort” of the President.

This was contained in a statement released by Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina. It reads:

“Mr. Metuh’s claim that a significant amount of the funds came from savings accumulated in the Excess Crude Account and handed over to the Buhari administration is completely false and deliberately intended to mislead the public.”

“As we clearly stated yesterday (on Tuesday), the funds approved by President Buhari for sharing to the three tiers of government on Monday came entirely from dividends and taxes paid to the Federation Account by the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Company, not from the Excess Crude Account.”

“The disbursed NLNG dividends and taxes were paid into the Federation Account in June this year and confirmed by the Central Bank’s statement to the Federal Government on July 7, 2015.”

“The funds cannot, therefore, be considered ‘savings’ by the Jonathan administration which left office in May, 2015, as disingenuously claimed by Mr. Metuh.”

“Instead of being repeatedly impugned and castigated by the PDP and its agents for honestly telling Nigerians that the nation’s treasury has been immensely depleted and its resources looted or squandered under previous administrations, President Buhari should be commended for the openness, transparency and accountability which he has now brought to the management of national funds.”

“It was in keeping with that disposition that the President promptly disclosed the accrual of the NLNG dividends and taxes to the Federation Account at his recent meeting with state governors and approved the convening of a special session of the FAAC to share it.”

“Mr. Metuh and others, who now ungratefully see Monday’s disbursement of the NLNG proceeds as their “legitimate” earnings and not a “bailout” from the Federal Government, may wish to tell Nigerians if such earnings were ever disclosed by the PDP Federal Government and paid to the states in the past.”

“The public may also wish to note that the Buhari administration itself has never referred to the actions which it was taken to ease the current financial difficulties of states as a “bailout.”

The funds were approved for sharing by Buhari on Monday, July 6.

Politics / Re: Nigerian Embassy In Saudi Arabia Snubs President Buhari’s Family by ogba20: 9:41am On Jul 09, 2015
MalcoImX:
For inexplicable reasons, the Nigerian embassy in Saudi Arabia this week side-stepped protocol by giving preference to former Vice President Namadi Sambo and his entourage of 15 family members over that of President Muhammadu Buhari when both arrived for the lesser Hajj (Umrah) in Saudi Arabia.
The Umrah is performed by Muslims from all over the world who converge on the holy city of Mecca to observe the ritual, which can be undertaken at any time of the year but mostly observed during Ramadan.
The pilgrims perform a series of worship activities symbolising the lives of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his second wife, Hajara.
LEADERSHIP gathered that both families arrived in Saudi Arabia this week for Umrah and while Aisha Buhari and her five children were allotted two-bedroom accommodation, the former vice president was allotted an eight-room apartment.
LEADERSHIP also learnt that while not a single protocol officer and vehicles were posted by the embassy to attend to the president’s family, a protocol officer and vehicles from the embassy were attached to the former vice president and his family.
An embassy source revealed that Buhari’s wife had travelled to Saudi Arabia via Emirate Airline instead of the presidential jet, as was the practice in the previous administrations, and had decided to seek alternative accommodation by herself at her own expense, to accommodate her and her children.
However, it was gathered that the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia provided an official vehicle to convey the Nigerian president’s family around as it is done for the families of all visiting heads of state.
The source further revealed that the consular-general, Ahmed Umar, still sees himself as being more beholden to the former vice president than anyone else because Sambo it was that was instrumental to his elevation and posting to Saudi Arabia. He still sees himself basically as Sambo’s protege, a staff member of the embassy told LEADERSHIP.
The source added that even the two-bedroom apartment allotted to the president’s family was a result of the efforts of the ambassador, Alhaji Abubakar Bunu, and not the consular- general.
While the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was in power, Buhari and his family were denied any privileges by the Nigerian embassy in Saudi Arabia, even those due to a former head of state because he was in the opposition.
Sambo and his family had last year embarked on a widely publicised Umrah.
