BY: ORIMOLOYE, Ifeoluwa I shall in fact employ Ogbeni la’s manner of expression, if that is the only way I can set my tongue loose from this spell. Should I say that I am confused? Rara ooo, certainly not, A kii gbo aburu lenu aboore, A priest isn’t meant to relay/break a (bad) news, A priest is not supposed to in fact speak (ill) in the negative, as it is an abomination. I have reassured myself, times over and over again, that I am not going to be captured or caught in the nets of Chinua Achebe telltales, despite the fact that a host of friends got convinced. I shall not suddenly become an apologist of Chinua Achebe’s message. I have repeated it several times, that my issue with the “tales from Biafra” is the blame game. In contrast to the turns of blame game, I am opined to the fact that our destiny lies in our hands, Nigeria or Biafra, anywhere we find ourselves, we are supposed to face the reality after every situation, of course nobody should be blamed for another’s misfortune, even with the limitless number of choices and opportunities that man has always (encountered) been presented with. So, no blame game, accept destiny, get on your feet, move forward and progress…no lamentation. This was the perception that I nursed even as I launched forcefully, albeit curiously into Chinua Achebe’s book, but I carefully read between the lines, whilst my counterparts in voraciousness read the book within a period of a day of two. The practical exercise of reading between the lines isn’t favorable, because up till the present moment, I haven’t finished the book I started about three weeks ago, while in fact those who started reading after me had gulped down the contents in a rush, two days is a bit of an understatement. I read in-depth, wanting to find out the miracle (contained in the book) that is capable of stealing emotions…But at last, I became emotion-laden. I share in that grief popularly referred to as the ‘civil war’. Achebe was able to ‘restore my tongue’, by channeling his message through my vocal cavity. By relaying the message which forms part of my review, I shall submit by saying: “When all has been said and done, I see the call for Biafra (intent upon the 1967 – 1970 declaration) coming because of the fact that the crusaders of the Biafran interest felt, in the very first place, that the country (Nigeria) wasn’t fulfilling its responsibility as a sovereign state to its citizens –a considerable number- (this is asides the ulterior motives relating to the marginalization, the coup, and the 1966 pogrom) and it in fact lacks what is expected of a progressive nation. Evidently, the corruption and the sad retrogression that hovers about 1960 (hitherto) was not impressive. The citizens in question (bounded by a common ancestral source) felt the need to, as a people with common interest resist oppression, and create a state that would be ‘conducive for their dreams’, a state that will be created in order to correct the lapses of the original state (Nigeria) and turn the lapses into fortunes and greater opportunities, and that is what I think of the first ever, initial Biafra. There was collectiveness and sense of a belonging that is peculiar to Biafra and it relates to self-determination. I saw also, all of that enthusiasm die with the proposed sovereign state of Biafra (that is in relation to the story of Chris Okigbo etal). I observed Achebe’s use of the word ‘pogrom’, and after sober reflections, I don’t know if I am an apologist or that initial resistive-individual with a parallel mindset’…” Achebe has done it again, I might have been caught in a synonymous manner as the scenario of his book, GIRLS AT WAR.

By: ORIMOLOYE, Ifeoluwa Absence burning passion out of me, Gentle breeze sparks wild, Out of proportionality, persistent whistles, My mind refused to heed to limits, Like an intemperate dog stalking the leopard, What became of my mood? Both the yam, and the pepper wandered aimlessly, Only the super-super-duper deity understands, When mere gods misplaced their senses. Absence burning desires out of me, Who musters while apparel rots, inexhaustively in the flare? Or musters by adding fuel into the fire? The fire that spurred my extravagancy while in debt, Now became the object of ridicule, An unwanted stranger, outcast! Mean like the dashiki, capable of shielding from all forms of bullet, Only the super-super-duper deity discerns, When mere gods misplace their senses. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, Dances then became attributed to the horse that suffers, Which best explains the bulging of the balloon, Like the tale of the elephant and the ant, Efforts, strives seen getting evaporated with the air, The stone which the builders refused, Refuse to become the head stone of the corner, Only the super-super-duper deity comprehend, When mere gods misplace their senses. -Individual response or reaction to issues at different places and time, varies directly with the state of the mind. |
FOR THE RECORD THE 21ST CENTURY AKURE KINGDOM AND HER POLITICAL EXPLOITS BY: ORIMOLOYE, Ifeoluwa Akure town is one of the ancient cities having its source from the ‘orirun yoruba’ (the source of the Yoruba people) which is Ile-Ife. Akure remains a town with the ancient touches, yet retains the look of a modern city, a quality which is peculiar to places like Ibadan city. It is a state capital and the hospitality of its people cannot be overemphasized, a fact which can be asserted by the peaceful co-existence between natives and ‘sojourners’ that include the hausas, Fulani and Ibos with vast market for businesses to thrive and arable land for farming. Akure land is most serene, considering especially the pleasant climatic condition. Whether or not you want to afford yourself some pleasures of sort, Akure town with strategically selected, yet economic considerate resort centres will lure or entice you, leaving you with just that pleasing succor which you have always longed for. I do not want to delve into other features that makes Akure town stands out, because my description of the rest of the features will leave you wondering as to whether this piece is an advertorial of sort. But these are facts that can as well be confirmed in the Wikipedia page dedicated to Akure. While it is important to note that Nigeria aims to be the giant of Africa, Akure town also aims to be the giant of Ondo state and in fact the Yoruba nation. Unarguably, this is evident in what suggests to be the rapid development and expansion that Akure has witnessed in the last few years. Almost with a corresponding increase in the standard and cost of living. Readers, do not be surprised if, in the next few years, plots of land are sold at almost the same rate with that of Lagos state and Ogun states, this a development which is almost happening as we speak. My development from childhood had witnessed a lot of opportunities in Akure town, and so I have often reminded myself of the privilege of being a native of Akure. Chief Oluyemisi Falae, and Pa Reuben Fasoranti are some of the political idols that Akure have produced. This is asides very many others that time and space would not afford me to mention. Do not forget that Oluyemisi Falae was a presidential aspirant in the year 1999. And so, in terms of politics, the 20th - 21st century is a very sensitive period and it therefore remains a period of reference for the people of Akure. Considering all of these factors, I have resolved to document in brief the political strides of the modern, and indeed the 21st century Akure community. Akure town has witnessed many of these exploits but unfortunately has not availed herself the opportunity of producing a governor of Ondo state since inception, despite its political exposure that can only (be compared) with other ancient Yoruba towns, and not any town within the shores of Ondo state. Yet those towns have produced governors not only once but in turns. Ibadan for instance can boast of products that have led the whole of Oyo state, in turns. It is almost surprising, that with its political heroes and leaders in other fields of endeavor, Akure is still considered incomplete with an almost near absence in the area of producing a leader (governor) of the state. Whereas, Akure town has continued in its existence to provide shelters (at Oke eda) for leaders, and indeed governors whose root are found outside the shores of Akure town. As self-realization is the key to unlocking some doors, Akure town discovered what seemed to be the problem with the seeming loophole in the political scheme of affairs and have thus thought of unity of purpose as one of the ways by which the shackles of political deprivation can be unlocked. It is discovered that Akure is composed of giants with high scorecards in the areas of public administration, strategic studies, political arithmetic, intellectual business and other needs necessary to achieve success in any election. In addition to this is an overwhelming population, which according an article I wrote, suggests that the decision or influence of the people of Akure in any election [in ondo state] cannot be treated with a wave of hand. What was observed in the election (which followed my artificial prophesy) was the fact that despite the incumbent governor’s prowress in terms of what can be described as political brilliance, political calculations and oratory gifts, coupled with his position (as the then southwest campaign chairman of his political party) his party lost in the election, and President Buhari won in Ondo state with a wide margin. This is due to the votes generated in Akure town. This influence was enormous. It was later discovered that; 1. Akure spoke in one voice during the Nigerian 2015 presidential election and it spoke volume. A lot of conclusions were as well drawn. 2. The governor of the state almost lost the seats in the state assembly elections (located especially within Akure district) but for the fact that he was quick to have appeased the people of Akure, although discreetly. 3. This of course signifies that what Akure has been lacking is the unity of purpose, and was made evident in the united front the Akure people took in the presidential elections. Therefore, having discovered the essence of the unity of purpose, Akure people have in the recent times, established, with the help of pressure groups within Akure district including the national association of Akure students and the Akure youth coalition and have met to brainstorm on the need to produce a governor of Akure origin. To them, despite the political strength and having in their possession the title of the state capital, there hasn't been any point in history where an Akure individual was recorded to have occupied the Ondo state governorship seat. Of course, the collaboration of the pressure groups gave rise to a group being referred to as the Akure Agenda group. Since its inception, the Akure agenda group has facilitated the emergence of a senator Sen. Donald Tayo Alasoadura from Akure who as at the time of compiling this draft, represents the people of Ondo central senatorial district comprising local governments within Ondo town and Akure town. It is important to bear in mind the fact that for a very long time, people from nearby town were the ones opportune to have won the senatorial seat. In the same vein, the Akure agenda group is also aimed at facilitating the emergence of an Akure individual with respect to the Ondo 2016 governorship election. Of course, the AKURE AGENDA GROUP is endorsed by the Deji of Akure, the paramount ruler of Akure town, who have recently declared his support for an Akure candidature for the seat of the governor of Ondo state. Whether or not this feat is achievable is dependent on the extent to which Akure is unified in relation to this aim. Overtime, the issue of unity is being attended to, even as Akure have neglected what used to be the disparity between Akure sub-divisions. The differences owing to boundary factors have been settled. Such that we now have the unified Akure that have embraced the unique Akure mother-tongue as a means of identification rather than boundaries. Interestingly, Akure shall, in a matter of months adopt her governorship candidate and by then, the whole politicking shall brought into the limelight. Cc: lalasticlala Ishilove

BY: ORIMOLOYE, Ifeoluwa The major source of confusion set in shortly after Gbemisola’s burial. Many of those with whom she shared intimacy on her social media platform started complaining about strange updates, which might have suggested that she posted those things by herself. Some of those things, I heard while in detention and some were confirmed even after I left detention. Her parents complained about the fact that they received strange text messages from the number she utilized before her death and it was one of those things she said in one of those texts that prompted their withdrawal of that case at all cost. Then came Kate’s assertion, although we have decided not to inform Kate about her mum’s death but occasionally whenever she asked after her mum, I would have no other option than to answer her the way my parents had done in the past, “Kate, don’t disturb me, your mum had travelled to London, she had been sent to go for a course over there”, then she will cease to disturb albeit, momentarily. She had continued to believe those statements as factual, until recently, when she came back home from school only to report her school mates. She said they ‘they’ had told her that “their parents said mummy is dead”. I rebuked her on such occasions telling her not to believe them, I would retract secretly, during those periods to go and cry in my bedroom , until my parents came consoling. Her confidence in me started becoming shaky when ‘she started experiencing one of those things’, I later discovered that she had refused to discuss those mysterious experiences with me because the ‘assailant’ had warned her not to do so. Well, I treated all of those things with a wave of hand, because worse was experienced the day we buried her. She had made calls to her siblings hours after her death, those ones received those calls ignorantly because they have not been informed of her demise. The wind that struck that day should definitely had been an evidence to hold on to. Well, my consolation had been in the injucture; it has been said that “it has been stated for one to die once, after which judgement comes” virtually everyone knows this. Her phone, which I collected after my release from detention had been with her parents since all these while, So whoever had made those mysterious sort of observation or the enigmatic form of experience might be going through some form of psychiatric disorder or might need spiritual cleansing in whatever form. As far as I am concerned, Gbemisola is dead, and I saw her being buried. I took time to occasionally visit my pastor, Rev. Ayorinde who had been of immense help during the time I was incarcerated. I shared those rumoured-experiences with him and he counseled me, “Mr Gboyega, they are ploys being anchored by the devil to threaten the children of God, it is not possible” he paused sipping the water from the glass cup, he continued, “Let us be assured that sister Gbemi is resting in the bossom of her savior, please read psalms 23 and 91 every night” , he emphasized, then searching his sitting room, perhaps for the holy oil he promised me, I heard him talk about the fact that our people especially the averagely surface-minded believers needs to be enlightened about the existence of heaven, as the eternal abode of believers or maybe writing a book encompassing those facts. Back home, I couldn’t just stop crying, not only because of the fact that I lost someone who can be boldly said to be my better half, but because of the circumstances that led to her death. I occasionally take one of her pictures, mostly the one we took on our wedding day, and I would ask how she wanted me to begin my life all over again as if the picture would provide some answers. It was one of those times I was tasking myself, asking one of those involuntary, yet-to-be answered questions that I received a text message on my phone, “I will be there for you till eternity, but please take good care of my children”, It was then I realized that I am not battling only mere mortals, but…It was sent from her phone number, I didn’t wait to check the phone number again-to confirm-I threw my phone away and dashed out of the building… I then found myself on the sofa at the seating room, beads of sweat dotted my face, my breathing had suddenly became outrageous. Nobody was at home, I knew that it was just a dream that came perhaps as a result of my deep thought, I took the wall-frame picture away from my chest and replaced it. It was then I discovered that I had slept off, I checked my phone, in order to further confirm that it was all a dream. Until then came the intrinsic relieve, which was just momentary, because as soon as I was relieved of the scare, came first a soft and then a heavy bang on the door... -ORIMOLOYE, Ifeoluwa is the national general secretary of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF AKURE STUDENTS Cc lalasticlala Ishilove |
INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE, NIGERIAN POLICE FORCE. FORCE HEADQUARTERS, ABUJA. THE REASONS WHY THE EXCESSES OF THE MEN OF THE NIGERIAN POLICE FORCE (ONDO STATE COMMAND) SHOULD BE CURBED URGENTLY Some months ago, students of Ondo state origin came from universities located within the nooks and crannies of the country to vote their leaders. Although quite expectedly, chaos broke out and it was expected that the Nigerian police was supposed to settle the chaos reasonably in a manner that no life will be lost and no individuals will be allowed to be injured, especially as they are saddled with the responsibility of securing lives and properties. Unfortunately, members of the Nigerian police force that was attached to the election acted contrarily, as they started shooting sporadically into the air. They are the men of the Ondo state anti-cultism squad. They ignored what was supposed to be a call of duty, even as they dealt with the students that were in attendance (and even voluntary observers) on that day as if they are criminals. Recently, some leaders of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF AKURE STUDENTS were coming back from a meeting and encountered some dared-devil individuals who drove as if they wanted to crush the student’s leaders, the same individuals in question, reversed back, in a deliberate attempt to crush down those students leaders. While the students leaders in question approached the driver of the vehicle with the number AGL…on its number plates, the driver of the vehicle and another occupant confronted the student leaders and in a bid to portray their expressions, the students snapped back at the dared-devil individuals, and in a short while, a little controversy ensued. What really dampens the heart is the contribution of the Nigerian police force (A’ division police station, Akure) to the issue, who purportedly came to intervene. They approached the situation by arresting the students alongside the dared-devil individuals, and in a dramatic turn, one of the dared-devil individuals was left unarrested. The arrest led to the infringements on some basic rights of those arrested, even as the arrested individuals were treated with hostility. On several occasions, they threatened to hit them with the gun, and at some point, they threatened to shoot. With hostility, the phone of those arrested were siezed, thus, depriving them of the rights to make a phone call to their lawyers. A huge blame was thrown at the students, and they were called so many name including ‘drunkards’. Human dignity was thus being trampled upon. Not too long ago, a woman, a member of the accord party was killed because she queried the police officers who came to arrest her children, in a bid to know why her children should be arrested like criminals. The officers of the Nigerian police force were said to have battered the woman, and was said to have led to her death. This is extent of the excesses of the officers of Ondo sate command of the Nigerian police force. We have decided to put forwards this petition (after making consultations with our legal advisers) owing to several reports of this nature that we have received from students who are rooted within the Akure territory in the recent times, calling for our intervention. Worthy of note, was that of some students who were mistook by the men of the Nigerian police force for a fraudster ( "yahoo boy" . These students who committed no offence, were, In a similar manner, deprived of their right and treated in a manner that can be likened to how an arrested fraudster can be treated, despite the students innocent claims, and their continued display of the school I.D CARD. OUR SUBMISSION It is not everybody that is walking on the streets that is a criminal, or has an intent to commit a crime, as such, when settling such issues, human dignities or rights to certain freedom should be respected. This is contrary to what was the police officers did. Also, Considering the aforementioned points, It is noteworthy to state categorically that the students leaders could have been killed yesterday by either the assailants (while they drove deliberately in a confrontational manner) or the officers while the student leaders where requesting that their rights be respected. The absolute disregard for human dignity and fundamental rights by the men of the Ondo state command of the Nigerian police force is taking a greater dimension and an unfortunate pattern. As such, this unruly behavior should be put to a halt forthwith. OUR RESOLUTION 1. Displeased with the issue, and worried by the recent excesses of the Nigerian police force, the entire members of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF AKURE STUDENTS, demands to know why it has become a crime to walk in the street of their hometown, especially around evening hours, even as it is important to point that the arrest was made around 7pm in the evening. 2. They also demands to know why the students leaders were treated with so much hostility from the assailants, only for the assailants to regain freedom shortly afterwards, in the midst of corroborating evidences implicating the assailants. 3. Akure students wants to know why despite corroborating evidences, the assailants weren’t charged with an attempted murder case, but in the negative, they charged the arrested individuals for a lesser offence. 4. Akure students in their entirety wants to know the duty of the police to the society, if individuals who are supposed to be the friend of the people are behaving in the negative, considering the hostility that the students leaders were subjected to. 5. That Akure students are peace loving people and are thus giving the officers of the Nigerian police force attached to the A’ division an ultimatum to respond to this petition by tendering an unreserved apology to the members of the National Association of Akure students, within 7 days to the date this petition is filled. Akure students thus requests that sanity be brought into the activities of the Nigerian police force by demanding that justice should take its course. They also want every human rights society to wade into the matter, as an injury to one is an injury to all, also, an injustice to one is an injustice to all, even as anybody could be met in this situation. . ................................. ........................... FALAE’S KIDNAP: AN AFFRONT TO AKURE TOWN On behalf of the members of the National Association of Akure Students, we want to condemn expressly the abduction of an elder statesman, a native of Akure by the name Oluyemisi Falae. At that we want to state categorically, that we have been briefed expressly on the ugly occurrence. In the briefing lies conflicting reports, although the news regarding his abduction still remains valid. Chief Olu Falae is a true son of the soil and he has done the town proud as a former secretary to the state government of the federation and as a former minister. He was instrumental to the process bearing the selection of the Deji of Akure, whose coronation was witnessed recently. His contributions to the development of Akure town is enormous and cannot be over-emphasized. It is most devastating to have learnt that the occurrence happened on his birthday, so also, in his home town where he retired after years of active service to Nigeria. Do we now say that a man cannot walk freely in his hometown? Akure town has been known for her hospitality especially towards visitors, but then, this ugly occurrence that was allegedly perpetrated by some herdsmen speaks volume. It poses lots of questions and ugly impressions. We want to commiserate with the family of Chief Olu Falae and also pledge our support to the erstwhile efforts being made to recover the elder statesman. The God we serve (irrespective of the religion) does not condole evildoers, and as such, we believe utmost-ly that the abductors shall be apprehended in no time. As a means of supporting the on-going search for the elder statesman, we shall not cease to remember him in our prayers until he is released, even as we hope to get in touch with the family, so as to commence our contributions towards the search. We want to urge the Nigerian Police Force to put more effort in the search for Chief Falae, by rising up to this challenge. Baba Falae, must be found and brought back hale and hearty. PRESS STATEMENT A CALL FOR A PARTICIPATORY FORM OF GOVERNANCE The attention of the leadership of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF AKURE STUDENTS has been drawn to the recent press statement which was released by the presidency and a group in favour of the rationale behind the appointment of some individuals into key positions in the administrative cabinet of president Buhari. That being said our intention is not just to enlighten the general public, but to point the attention of the presidency to some points. We shall raise these points as ‘concerned individuals’ with the genuine interest of the country at heart, and not as bigots. Over the years, THE ASSOCIATION has carved for herself the position of a watchdog, hence, trying to align activism into her aims and objectives. This has earned us overtime the confidence of Nigerians and the Akure people whom we represent, and this has always been our source of motivation. As such, we shall not allow, with our eyes wide open, a perceived ethnic crisis that may brew if the president is allowed to proceed with his method of dishing political appointments. Such was the case of the 1967 crisis, which historically, was allowed to brew due to some ‘ethnico-selfish’ agendas. The said aggrieved group resulted to a separative measure as a means to settling their grievances. Therefore, as a progressive association that is committed to the development of the country, we do not want to witness the repetition of such an ugly experience. On this note let it be on record that; 1. A few months ago, an announcement was made with respect to appointments into the cabinet of President Buhari, wherein an overwhelming percentage of the nomination came from the north. 2. This was followed by some criticism of sort. 3. That notwithstanding, Nigerians accepted the nomination whilst many Nigerians reserving their heartfelt downpour, thinking that the seeming ethical sentiment will be addressed by the ‘principal’ in the subsequent selection of cabinet members. 4. Recently, another announcement was made and the said ethical sentiments was allowed to repeat itself in a worrisome manner, And with the total appointments made so far, numbering up to fifteen, only two are from the southern geo-political zone while the rest emanates from the Northern geo-political zone. 5. This was as well followed by a circular by a certain group in the North, which contains tauting and inflammatory statements that is capable of dividing the country OUR SUBMISSION The peculiarity that stems up from the electoral victory of President Buhari in the last election is believed to have been characterized by his widespread acceptance in the whole region of the country, the principals’ ethnic background notwithstanding. It is almost surprising that even in places, especially regions where he lost, his acceptance was made evident in the little margin or space that was left, which was capable of earning him an ‘overall’ victory in the election. Away from politics, we have a problem on our hands which we have not solved, and this problem extends to the problem of insurgency that is threatening to pull the country apart. This problem shouldn’t be compounded with the marginalization of some ethnic group in the incumbent dispensation, as only God could tell what would happen in a matter of months if the perceived sidelining is allowed to tarry, even into subsequent appointments. At this point in time, we are supposed to act reasonably such that we do not act, in a way to negate the provisions of the constitution or leave some people to be aggrieved, considering especially the prevailing ethnic circumstances. It should be noted that the fastest way to start a crisis in a ‘fragile’ country like Nigeria is by creating an ethnic division. The only precaution to such a disaster is to foster a sort of all round administrative quality rather than a sidelining or marginalization of sort. Also, many have defined politics as a game. And in a game, an important ingredient for a successful encounter is a fair play. Therefore, if the president must be successful in this game, he must employ the rule of fair play. This should be better carried out by the ‘distribution’ rather than segregation of political appointment. On a conclusive note, we want to urge the president to understand that he is the president of a country and not a geo-political zone. In the light of this he shouldn’t do things that will be regarded to be in the interest of a zone, but in the interest of the whole country. The best approach to enforcing unity is by creating a sense of belonging in all Nigerians. Therefore, it is high time the president reconsidered his stance on appointments before things are allowed to go out of hand. There is a need to embrace this fact by suing for a participatory form of government. What we mean by ‘participatory’ is a government that will involve the three tribes in equal proportion. WE SO SUBMIT. SIGNED; BOBOYE, Afolabi Adebimpe ORIMOLOYE, Ifeoluwa THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT GENERAL SECRETARY cc: lalasticlala

THE ESSENCE OF #BIRTHDAYS: THE NEED FOR SELF-REALIZATION Being a commemorative piece written by #ogbenihimself …And so, my growth witnessed some change in orientation and the general attitude towards life, such that a transformation was witnessed by myself. Now l that cherish more of a reflective birthday that can bring about a deeper thought on how to go about touching more lives than I can think of. This is more of the reason why I have resolved to get this piece written. For me, today marks the beginning of another year, and it must be said that invariably the countdown had begun. With all gazes fixed at the celebrant, I am assured of a wider audience that is capable of spreading this ‘gospel’ at a go, albeit I am going to write without that kid glove that is expected of the day. Away from criticism and poetic gestures, it is just myself wishing to present my birthday wishes. Therefore, it gives me a great pleasure to write this piece as a commemoration of my birthday simply because, just like every new year, there is also a need to go about the birthday resolution, which should, from my perspective be brought about by chains of deep, critical and progressive thinking. I will not go against the culture of birthday festivities, but I think there is more explanation to the way a birthday should be celebrated than it meets the eye. What am I driving at? Like marketers in bigger corporations with a defined, well spelt out targets, human creatures are born with a specific purpose and mission. There are like a target or a mandate that must be met. The mission varies with individuals, but not without obstacles, which comes in form of a distraction. Without doubt, it takes some people a lot of time before they realize essentially what their mission is, whilst very unfortunately, it takes some other individuals their lifetime before they understand what the essence of their birth implies. The implication is that, a situation could arise whereby the lack of realization of someone’s mission might leads others, or multitude astray, because like a chain, we are all connected imaginarily, one way or the other. Therefore, I think celebration of birthdays should leave the stage of being irregular to being purposeful, from the stage of vagueness to vast understanding, from the stage of ignorance to self-realization. That explains why amongst other things individuals are expected to grow wiser with respect to increase in age. Perhaps, it is expected that an increase in age should bring about a lot of reasoning cum reflections that will bring about an advancement not just in the area of intellectual abilities but an all-round maturity in one’s self. If births are linked to the purpose of an existence, then I believe that birthdays should be thought of as a ‘period’ in which one is expected to reflect on his purpose or mission on earth. At that, I am compelled to say after deeper reflections, which this day has afforded me, that out of our very many individual missions, one mission is common to every mankind, and that is the ability to impact on each other’s life, positively. From a biblical perspective, of the very many missions that Jesus Christ achieved or fulfilled here on earth, one is peculiar. That mission is the one of the very many missions that is common to every human creature. It must be said that Jesus Christ came to this world to make an impact on all of us, and it is expected that we continue in that trend. Therefore, we can say deductively, that birthdays should better be observed as a day, wherein we are meant to reflect on our mission, especially on the numbers of life we have impacted positively, and revisiting whilst putting finishing touches to the plans to impact on more lives. Therefore, what other things can I ask for on this occasion of my birthday than atemporal provisions that will increase my consciousness towards charity, so as to reach out to more lives and put more smiles on people’s faces. On this note, I want to wish myself, my kid brother who happens to be a birthday mate – ORIMOLOYE, Nifemi, ‘chief kongi’ and other July ‘missionists’ (or explorers) a happy birthday celebration. To well-wishers, I want to thank you for celebrating the significance of the day with me. -ORIMOLOYE, Ifeoluwa On the 10th day of July, 2015 cc: lalasticlala , ishmike

PRESS RELEASE LET IT BE ON RECORD!!! THE TOTAL HUMILIATION OF ONDO STATES STUDENTS: AN ABUSE TO DEMOCRATIC VALUES AT THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ONDO STATE STUDENTS (NATIONAL BODY) ELECTION Let it be on record that the electioneering process of the National Association of Ondo State Students (NATIONAL BODY) was held today 4th of July, 2015 simultaneously, one at the stronghold of a top government official in Akure North and another at an undisclosed location for reasons not far from security. All legitimate Ondo State students senators (eligible voters) were compelled to move out of the election to a safer spot, simply because of the fact that a known government official who doubles as a member of the Ondo State House of Assembly have decided to take over the structure of the election in the interest of the government of the day for party interest. It was at the latter location of our choosing that Sen. Ebiwonjumi Humphrey Akintoye was duly elected as the National President of NAOSS in a keenly contested, free and fair atmosphere in contrast to the unruly and unconstitutional electioneering process organised by the said government officials. Let it also be on record that enforcement agents that were brought in by the official working for the governor, started shooting sporadically into the air and at the students under the instruction of the said Honourable representing Akure North at the Ondo State House of Assembly. Let it be known also, that the whereabout of over twenty students that are known to be legal electorates still remains unknown to us. Although report reaching us suggests that they might have been wounded by the bullets being shot by the unruly and uncontrollable law enforcement agents that was denied by the Nigeria Police Public Relation Officer, Ondo state command. It is more disheartening also to have learnt that the guns were being shot into the air so as to chase the eligible electorates that were brought in by the source working for the government of the day. We are concerned at the manner in which the military officers, members of the police forces, the members of the anti-cultism squad together with miscreants in a combined efforts infringed on the right to dignity of human person of peaceful Ondo state students meeting to perform their civic rights. This in no doubt is a slap on the dignity and personal life of the common Ondo states students whose intention is to cast their votes without any infringement on their rights. However, the irregularities observed in the course of the disrupted kangarooed elections are as follows: An unconstitutional independent electoral commission with majority of her members from top government functionaries in the state who have nothing to do with studentship was observed. Unrecognised and ineligible senators (chapters’ president and secretaries) camped in a resort centre accompanied with fat envelopes for reasons of electoral misconduct with the influence of the aforementioned legislator believed to be acting the script handed to him by the state government. The said kangarooed election was declared inconclusive by the constitutionally unrecognised electoral commission chairman after which legitimate senators requested for the destruction of less than twenty votes which had been casted earlier and were subsequently disrupted under the authority of the said honourable who ordered security agencies to distract the students which led to the sporadic and intermittent gunshots aimed at the students – in order to preserve the ballots from the interest of the eligible voters. The ballots box was moved to the nearby police station close to Ejioba High School and returned with over one hundred and fifty unscrupulous ballots in the presence of less than four agents and declared in the absence of the legitimate senators that left to conduct a students’ decided free and fair election of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ONDO STATES STUDENTS (NATIONAL BODY) The suspicious presence of the members of the state government cabinet, a member of the state house of assembly as the organizer of the election is a serious aberration of the NAOSS constitution which has best recognised them as nothing but observers. As a coalition representing concerned Ondo state students we are indeed concerned about the manner certain individuals of the state government functionaries and law enforcement agencies seeks to denigrate the efforts of legitimate and progressive students’ senators of the National Association of Ondo State Students who travelled far and near in our determined bid to stamp out the scourge of political influence and “god-fatherism” which has ravaged the development of the association. In all this, the handwriting of the government of the day was written clearly on the proceedings of an election which can be termed as being void of fairness, transparency and democratic values. Thus, we are using this medium to report our claims and prayers to all to all NAOSSites, global human right group not only to condemn the unruly attitude of the government functionaries concerned but to stand for what is just and best for the National Association of Ondo state students, that we are not part of the falsified election held at Ejioba High School, Oba-Ile, Akure. DO THE NEEDFUL, PAY OUR PARENTS THEIR ENTITLEMENTS! At this point in time, the entire members of the National Association of Akure students want to register their displeasure over the nonpayment of salaries of civil servants in some states in Nigeria. They have also observed with disgust, the manner in which some individuals made mockery of the issue, which stands to be the disgusting aspect of it all. It is most unfortunate that some state administrators have preferred to spend on frivolities than the payment of salaries as life-threating as it is. It particularly dampens the heart, to have learnt that this is happening in a country where political office holders earn as much that is capable of turning the fortune of billions of individuals around. Emphatically speaking, it is one thing to deprive staff of incentives, and it is another thing to deprive them of essential entitlements, which should be better classified as the benefit for their services to the nation. We have learnt much to our satisfaction that the Nigerian Labour Congress have waded into the matter and are billed to take an action soon. That being said, To the best of our understanding, we have observed that some students have been facing hell over the year, especially in the payment of tuition fee, as most families relies on government-pays in sorting the tuition fees of their wards and other welfare concerns. It is on this note that we are being compelled to identify with ‘our parents’ by standing against this form of deprivation, and by helping them fight this course, as much as we do not want anything that will hinder our academic progress, a situation that can be envisaged considering the issue on ground. We do not want to mention names of states that are deeply affected, but when you visit some states in Nigeria, you will be submerged in shock and deep pity for these families. At that, the National Association of Akure Students have decided to make consultations with the Nigerian Labour congress and some relevant organisations, and in due course we shall communicate our resolution to the general public. The general public should bear in mind the fact that if this issue is not tackled in no sooner time, we shall, in conjunction with students-based indigenous organisations present in the affected states, organise a peaceful protest, and at the end we may extend it nationwide, until the yearnings of ‘our parents’ is being taken into consideration, and the situation is consequently prevailed upon. We shall also not cease to remember this nation in our prayers, especially in this time of peril. Human rights is those basic standards without which people cannot live in dignity. To violate human rights is to treat an individual as though he/she were not a human being. To advocate for human rights is to demand that the human dignity of people be respected. (www1.umn.edu) In order not to waste time unnecessarily, trying to give an account of the degree at which human rights have been violated in most countries in the world, I will go straight to the purpose of this contribution. Most of the people I have met with have always been proactive when it comes to talks about humanity, they suddenly become unnecessarily energized especially when it comes to talks about human rights violation and abuse. “A suspect should not spend more than 24 hours in custody”, a friend was telling me recently, almost shouting at the top of his voice. Whereas, I have seen cases where suspects spend nothing less than two to four days in detention, with security operatives “assuring” that individual about the fact that he is going to stay longer than that in detention. Funny enough, months after his outburst, my colleague was nabbed on his way to a function. What was his offence? He was arrested because of the fact that he was wearing an “afro” hair that was making the security operatives uncomfortable about his integrity. At the point of his arrest, while asking for a comprehensive knowledge about his arrest, like every rational individual will do, in response, he was “bestowed” with the most dynamic beating of his life. While he was sharing his experience in detention with me days after he was arrested, I was forced to ask him questions related to his fundamental rights, “But you should have insisted on the fact that suspects shouldn’t spend more than 24hours in detention now”, I asked jokingly, trying to tease him. “But you should have requested for the right to speak with an attorney”, I added, thus, acting like I was clueless about the manner the security operatives treats suspects in the country, then trying to tease the remaining guts out of him in the process, the guts he had months ago, when he was shouting at the top of his voice about the duration of detention of suspects. To be honest with you all, many of us knows our fundamental rights, and can debate it to any length, except in the presence of security operatives. That is because of the fact that the security operatives doesn’t observe –most times- human rights when it comes to arrest of suspects, they subject them to torture, starting from the instance they were arrested. It doesn’t happen only in Nigeria, but all over the world, as opposed to the article I read recently, purported to be written from a publication from Amnesty international, pointing to Nigeria, as “hell fire” where suspects were subjected to serious amount of torture, but it is only that in Nigeria, it is more pronounced. There are two terms I need to clarify here, the term “torture” and the term “suspects.” An applicant was arrested in November 1991 following a police investigation into drug trafficking, filed a case against some police officers, who examined him. During his detention, he was examined by several doctors and medical certificates were issued. He was particularly quoted to have said that he was subjected to some sort of ill-treatment while in custody, ranging from being repeatedly hit, to being dragged along by his hair, and the worst of all, being urinated on and being threatened with syringe. The judge appointed forensic experts to examine the applicant, and it was confirmed that the applicant’s injury were sustained at a time which corresponded with the period of police custody. (BUTTERWORTHS HUMAN RIGHTS CASES PG. 1) Similarly, in an application (no 25803/94) to the European Commission of Human Rights on 28, December 1992, Ahmed Selmouni complained that the ill-treatment to which he had been subjected while in police custody and the length of the proceedings relating to his criminal complaint and application to join the proceedings as a civil party violated the guarantee against torture and his right to a fair trial within a reasonable time under arts 3 and 6(1) of the convection for the protection of Human rights and fundamental freedoms 1950. The commission declared the application admissible on 25 November 1996 and on 16 march 1998 referred the case to the European court of human rights. (BUTTERWORTHS HUMAN RIGHTS CASES PG. 3) The result of the cases above was that the perpetrators were found guilty and were prosecuted. The term “suspects” is used to refer to individuals who were found culpable or guilty of committing an offence (or something to his discredit) without CONCLUSIVE proof. An individual is said to be a suspect if he is CONSIDERED culpable of a crime, without evidently-convincing proof. An individual remains a suspect, not because the individual committed the crime, but because he is CONSIDERED to have committed it without (in the absence of substantial) evidences, and as such his fundamental rights still covers him and as such, he can’t be treated just anyhow (the services of a legal practitioner might be needed for enforcement of such privileges). A suspect is not a criminal until there are evidences, which might not be obtained until there are “intense interrogations” of sort. These intense interrogations can be carried out without infringing on anyone’s human dignity. As such, there should be a distinction between the treatment being meted out to a suspect and the one a criminal will be subjected to during interrogation… Human rights exhibits its characteristics towards being inalienable and indivisible, Indivisible because you cannot be denied a because it is less important or less essential, and inalienable because you cannot lose these rights any more than you can cease being a human being. I refer to torture as a deliberate abuse (either physical or psychological) which categorically breaches (or threatens) the fundamental rights of an individual. But “advanced” definitions referred to it as an act of causing great physical or mental pain in order to persuade someone to do something or to give information, or to be cruel to a person or animal. Another defined it as a deliberate infliction of intense pain or suffering on body or mind, others gave it as wrenching out of shape, But the question is, do we have to go to the extent of “wrenching” (as it is being done today) to extract the truth from an individual? Considering the fact that these individuals aren’t animals…they deserve some liberty. It has come to my notice that some security operatives have, all in the name of eradicating cultism, begin to trample upon some individual’s dignity by arresting those with ideological based appearances. Especially in Nigeria, all they do is to observe your appearance and the next thing is to subject you to immediate torture, and an immediate arrest. They basically infringe on the human rights benefits, as they don’t want to know if you are just a suspect or a “pick-up” victim. This was the kind of experience, my aforementioned colleague encountered. He was called all sort of names by the security operatives for wearing an “Afro hair”…He was harassed, tortured and given the worst “heat treatment” of his life. If that is the way the security operatives have been hunting for criminals, I say with all sense of modesty, that it is wrong. I call that an arrest that is motivated by ideological imbalances. In fact, that makes it possible, perhaps for the “main” suspects to be mistaken for criminals, as appearance shouldn’t be the basis for nabbing suspects. Except, if the security operatives were also given mandates as to Internally Generated Revenues! Then, it could be said that their actions are largely attributed to their trying to beat “a certain deadline”, or what do you all think? To me personally, I think people needs to be orientated about their rights to non-infringement of fundamental rights… What do I mean by non-infringement of fundamental rights? When fundamental rights does exists, it is necessary to protect it or guide it, therefore non-infringement of fundamental rights is another way of saying that people deserve rights to the protection of their fundamental rights, that is, rights to non-interference into fundamental rights assurances or guarantees… Everyone accepts the responsibility not to infringe on the rights of others and to support those whose rights are abused or denied. For people still have human rights even if the laws or those in power do not recognize or protect them. ECHOES OF RESOUNDING VICTORY, ACHIEVEMENT AND COMMITMENT AN ACCOUNT OF STEWARDSHIP Permit me to start with an assertion made by a president of the United States of America in the 1960s which goes thus, 'ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country'. The assertion was made by no other person than President John F. Kennedy, and for me, the quote dwells more on service to humanity which has in recent times, been buried by an antagoist that I will refer to as personal or selfish interests. It was based on this ideology (service to humanity) that I was able to lead the association for a period of a year. So also, the entire leadership of the was bred with the same ideology thus, serving as a foundation. Although, there were a bit of challenges when we came on board, the 'service to humanity' orientation served as a source of encouragement and rather than thwarlting our plans, those challenges became a stepping stone for us. At that, I can look back and reiterate that the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF AKURE STUDENTS and AKURE TOWN is truely progressing. As opposed to expectations from some quarters, I can authoritatively say that we have left the National Association of Akure students better than we met it, at that, the rest now lies with the incoming set of executives. Ladies and gentlemen, our achievements, the achivements of the Oluyi, Akintade tayo led administration ranging from the erection of the "welcome to Akure" sign posts at the entrances of the town, the production of incentives for the association, the unparalleled represention of the interest of Akure students, the successful holiday coaching, the purchase of a public address system and the plastic chairs, so also, the election debate organised by the association for the contenders for the state house of assembly and house of representatives election within Akure district, and the 'struggle' for the payment of our book allowance, likewise the procurement of the association's aluta 'jet', among other achivements was made possible with your help. Therefore, I must appreciate Akure students at home and in the diaspora for their love, support and co-operation, as we must all bear in mind that it is only in a peaceful and united atmosphere that all of these can be achieved. I shall also use this medium to advise the incoming set of executives to imbibe the culture of service to humanity rather than selfishness, of honesty rather than dishonesty, of transparency and accountability rather than hyprocrisy, as it is only in all of this that we can envisage the growth of the association and Akure town in general. As I step aside today, in furtherance of both leadership and political exploits, away from the position of leadership of the national association of Akure students, in fulfillment of the provisions made by the 'bible of the association' which is the constitution that guides our affairs here in this association, I want us all to remember in whatever we do, that Akure town is ours and the future of the town lies in our hands, it is therefore left for us to make use of whatever opportunity that we have, or whatever position that we may be called upon to serve to influence this project, which I shall refer to as 'AKURE MUST SHINE' In all, let us all be a good ambassador of this association and Akure town in general. ASK ROMEO, MIND JULIET This poem is meant for Temitope Olowookere, my 'lady tee' whom I cherish so much... True to a heart; where true love liveth, Ask Romeo, mind Juliet, Wondered why my rose is red, And I shall tell you, I had my heart bled on it profusely, And so germinated my greeny rose fertilizers of platelets. Mind why I never gave a damn about love? Ask Romeo, mind Juliet, Asked why my eyes speaks no longer for love? Hear me out and I shall tell you, When you close your eyes to my lips, In the presence of the flame so rekinded, Then your heart shall listen to what emits inner-like, For nothings seems imaginable than the confluence of two hearts; our hearts. Wondered what prompted this 'h-art' of love? Ask Romeo, mind Juliet, There exists many inverse in the universe, Inverse of no generic nature, 'fitures' like yours, You can count, and count; around, Till you lose account of whatever they hold, Why then should I shield a heartfelt downpour? What do I give to ignite a heart that has refused to beat? Ask Romeo, mind Juliet, How do I say to myself, the emptyness in me is over? Maybe by pouring this confession of sanital love only you can understand, Then, my heart shall fulfill its quest for rest, Maybe you shall see this flow of superlative 'h-art', As an evidence of the existence; that of my love for you. A 'SHORT EPISTLE' TO BARRISTER OLUKAYODE AJULO, THE NATIONAL SECRETARY OF THE LABOUR PARTY AND THE 'SUPPOSED' FACE OF A BUDDING OPPOSITION IN NIGERIA LABOUR PARTY NATIONAL SECRETARIAT, ABUJA NIGERIA. Sir, LET HE THAT THINKS THAT HE STANDS TAKE HEED LEST HE FALL For many of us, what we think that is best for the Nigerian society is an opposition that will CONSTRUCTIVELY pattern and ginger the government of the day towards that destination of our dreams through criticisms. And so we were all delighted when Barrister Ajulo took up the responsibility to be the face of the budding opposition, afterall the members of the peoples democratic party who are supposed to retain such position seem to be shying from the position by decamping to the party in power. A step which seeks to negate the definition of democracy -even as it may leave us with a weak or no opposition atall- as expressed by one of the many scholars, For the sake of clarity, the definition describes "the existence of a government and an opposition as the true practice of democracy" Some of us watched from our closets the way you taunt the government of the day, despite the fact that the power was not yet at their disposal at that instance, yet, we recognised that, which you manifested as a characteristic of a youth bustling with energy waiting to be utilised, until unfortunately, your criticisms started showing signs of indecencies. The truth be told, it got to a stage when your criticisms left us in complete bewilderment, making us wonder if the man- president Buhari has wronged you on a previous encounter. It is therefore tenable to say that as critics, asides sensitivity, what is important to us is not just to keep the government on its toes by releasing articles sequentially to that effect, but by exercising constraint as at when due with respect to sensitivity, as criticism are determined as being permissible if released at a time when the subconscious gives a 'bite', such undoubtedly could be observed in the tone of this letter. This is contrary to the way governor Ayo Fayose criticised president Buhari, and without doubt a great deal of folly was sensed from that angle. Unfortunately, this is the step you also have decided to take this sensitive period. You need not to be told that as a critic there is a need to observe caution in dishing out criticism, such that followers do not just read series of empty lines at all times, as observed in the most recent of your article. On a conclusive note, I will advise that you exercise caution in presenting dishes of criticisms to us, your followers who are looking up to you, lest we become fed with concoctions with disastrous consequences. Even at that, the country is just recovering from fangs of a supposedly visionless administration and as such, what the citizens want is not antagonism but a constructive criticism of sort. We want criticisms aimed at our development and not the ones that will militate against the development of the country. I am compelled to write this because if your trend of such criticism continues, you may be accustomed to the act of unveiling in your opinions only what you think negatively of a man on whose shoulder rests the fate of the country for the next four years. On a lighter mood, permit me to felicitate with you and 'us' on this occasion of the democracy day celebrations. A fellow scribbler, ORIMOLOYE, Ifeoluwa |
This is relevant, as a commeration of this year's press "occasion" I guess that by the time my piece goes through effective scrutiny by members of the press and devout-rational thinkers, we shall all realize, before it is too late that the security of life and properties in Nigeria, is just an entitlement of the privilege. Even as I divert from the comments this piece is meant to establish, I want us all to concern ourselves not with the deaths, or just the assassinations but with the controversial manner in which those unjust actions have been carried out. And not just that alone, but the investigations that stems up after those assassinations, as up till the present moment, the controversy behind Dele Giwa’s death hasn’t been unraveled, talk-less of… It is reality to say that Nigerians do sleep this days with one eye opened, you wouldn’t believe me, it is an “impossible reality” that happens in places in the country, as I am a perfect example. Formerly, I was like the biblical Jonah, but now, occurrences had taught me to be vigilant, and so I spend most of my night fidgeting at every single noise that pervades the nighty-silence, then consoling myself by caressing my sharpened cutlass –weapon of defense- and lamp, like a newly found lover does to his partner, you wouldn’t blame me! Why should I sleep with my two eyes closed, when some powerful individuals are there spending their money on training snipe shooters? Are they out there waiting to shoot at birds or bush meats? Why should I sleep with my two eyes closed, when some individuals at the top are busy sponsoring terrorist organizations? Why should I sleep with both eyes closed when those that are supposed to guarantee my safety are the ones who are said to be sponsoring “sharp shooters”? Dele Giwa, the fearless journalist was killed in a horrible manner by individuals, who by now, are either walking about the streets of this country, as free-men or individuals who are out of the country enjoying their lives. I am quite sure that immediately after his death, the authorities would continue to assure the deceased family of adequate investigation and bringing those culpable to justice, but alas, years later, Dele-Dimgba died again and now the same assurance will continue to trail the aftermath of his death. Dele-Dimgba’s death has pointed out one thing, the fact that you can never know the enemy’s line of action, as they might decide to come through places, just like the message a friend sent to me, which suggests that these days, you have to be careful before you cross the road, as after looking left and right as expected of you, you need to look upwards towards the sky, as an assurance that there is no danger coming downwards. My readers might become curious at this point, as to who Dele-Dimgba is….Dele-Dimgba is the collective name that I have coined for those journalists who died in a controversial form, perhaps as a result of the fearless manner in which they discharged their duties or as a result of the truthful nature that is attached to the manner in which they discharged their duties. In fact, Dele-Dimgba is my definition of what I could refer to as the practice of Journalism with the truthful principle and that leads me to the food-for-thought, which comes in form of a question; “Who can kill Dele-Dimgba?” Dele-Dimgbas exists among us all, it is only that their existence is limited and they always have a shorter life span –enemies do cut it short. Dele Giwa had long been killed, Dimgba Igwe has just been killed, but their legacies – “Dele-Dimgba”- will forever live on. They have, within their short period of existence, marked their footprint on the sand of fearless jornalism…It is left for us all to continue to uphold the tenets of truth and faithfulness in whatever duties we may find ourselves. With that, I say Goodnight to Dimgba Igwe, even as the world awaits the circumstantial birth of new Dele-Dimgbas, the ones who will use the sword of truth to unravel the mystery behind the death of Dele and Dimgba, and will consequently seek Justice. A poem which centers on a young man’s quest for a desirous partner, and the travails that ensued during the adventure. It is the young man’s expression of what should be described as a bliss… Just after the cloud in my eyes was about to give way, After receiving from my heart the deepest lamentations, Located in the discreet part of my soul, For what gives one a heartache, Than giving Kilimanjaro a trial of faith, And still wishing for its stagnancy, For what you see after Kilimanjaro moves is trembling, Then you shall pause and ask, What shall it profit my whole self? I had wanted Kilimanjaro to make its move, And cover the whole distance to my room, Either to return to me the crown on its helms, Or describe to me the road of no return, For the reward for spending my faith is supposed to be you, At that, send me, send me, my soul yearns, Without me getting a control of myself, Then I paused to ask myself, What shall it profit me? For what shall it profit me, When high up Kilimanjaro you, the crown stood, Shining, reminding me of a lost rib, Myself empty, with my soul vanished, Your position was where I doth sent my soul, But now that you, my crown is salvaged, I hope my exploratory will be considered, Else, my soul shall scream to its feathers, What has profited you? #XENOPHOBIA: A SPITEFUL DISPLAY OF PUBLIC INSANITY BY ORIMOLOYE, Ifeoluwa Whenever people forget history in a hurry, I am always saddened, owing to the fact that the word ‘ingrate’ (from my perspective) is an unfortunate term which ensue from the persistent abuse of history and its records. Unfortunately, this phenomenon has overtime destroyed ambitions. Such is the case of the locals in South Africa and their xenophobic attitude which has taken its root and has spread its wing in almost the entire South African country. Well, if the were to be on the other hand, it would have taken us by a lesser surprise, but most unfortunately it came this time around as a case of the blacks-against-blacks which can be unequivocally presumed as the rise of a kinsman against a fellow kinsman. For most of us who cherish family relationships, I shall crave your indulgence in furthermore stating that the xenophobic attitude (South African’s peculiar xenophobism) is like a war between two siblings from the same parents, and eventually only for one of those siblings to take the other by the neck and slaughter him. But then, going back to the xenophobic chat, the South African locals do not have an excuse, that massacre is a senseless one, and as much as a friend has prescribed that the locals might not be civilised, I would suggest that they be taken for a psychiatric test…For racists (who despise the black), this I believe might look like a confirmation (of) and a justification for some of their claims, Even as I continue to wonder why terrorism should be made to look like a minor defect that needs correction, if those guys were not found to be mentally slow at the end of the whole diagnosis (which I will still consider as an impossibility), I think they should be charged to court to face the same penalty as terrorism, as this is terrorism in disguise. May I state categorically here at this point that I am a bit inclined to my public relations skills than international affairs analysis (except of course for the Syrian affairs, the negotiations and some related diplomacy), but then I shall not let the South African Xenophobia issue pass by my consciousness without adding my input, as it affects all of us as human creatures that is attached to Africa, and Nigeria in particular. And even though my analysis might be classified on the overall as a bit vague, I shall still have to say a few words stemming from the little information I have at my disposal; NIGERIA AS a SOUTH AFRICAN COMRADE-IN-ARM: At a time in history, the South Africans were said to have been plagued with an “epidemic” which was referred to as Apartheid. The peculiarity in apartheid is that (apologetically speaking) it is generically attached to south Africa and unlike the racial issue which may cut across countries, and boundaries, apartheid became more like an infection which sought to separate even kinsman from each other for reasons related to colour of the skin, It is simply a war against the blacks that reside in the South Africa. This situation was said to have continued to exist until people like Nelson Mandela rose up…Strolling down the memory lane again, it was learnt that during the period of this epidemic, the emerging diplomatic enemy of South Africa (Nigeria) was one of the neighbours who offered a remarkable assistance to them in their times of trials, but then, that was just a historical perspective that borders on what should be a reciprocative-compensation that should have been bestowed by the South Africans on a country like Nigeria and other African countries, irrespective of any strain of sort. To this extent, I cannot begin to wonder why the South Africans would suddenly begin to resent Neighboring-allies (the immigrants) to the extent of an attempted massacre like a senseless ingrate, I don’t seem to understand. PRECAUTIONARY OPINION: From time immemorial, even before Nigeria was declared as the largest economy in Africa (a feat which fetched from south Africa), I make bold to say that a considerable investment of the South African exists here in Nigeria, By now, given the Xenophobia issue, I think the South Africans must have understood that if this is allowed to tarry, they may be calling for some diplomatic lashes which shall, if implemented, send sporadic signals back home in South Africa. They should understand that it doesn’t take us the barest effort to make this country un-enabling for their businesses. On a conclusive note, I shall liken the situation in South Africa presently to the biblical story of Abel and Cain. It was written that Cain actually killed Abel his brother born of the same parents, but Cain and his generations got lashed and up till the present day, the implication of that is still quite enormous. Let the South African locals take a cue from the story… lest they experience what Cain and his generations experienced, let them be warned! UNMASKING THE CHARACTER BEHIND XENOPHOBIA By: ORIMOLOYE, Ifeoluwa I am still being compelled to compose this piece which stand to go against the crimes against humanity that is currently being witnessed in South-Africa, for reasons being that my recent article on the subject matter generated rumbles from some quarters, which made me sense the need for clarity so as not to be portrayed as a racist. Shall we now say on the opposite that in recent times, xenophobia is the direct opposite of racism and so if you are not xenophobic, you must be definitely out of the South African line, and that may leave you as an ‘apartheid-philic’ or a racist! I must state here categorically that the rationale behind my writing that piece titled; "Xenophobia: A spiteful display of 'public' insanity" centered on my observation of the Xenophobic attitude that is being witnessed in South Africa, albeit consequently, I was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the whole Xenophobic affair is simply a war against Nigerians in particular. The recent diplomatic strains between Nigeria and South Africa suggests it all, and I shall not waste time in describing the intriguing dramas in quick succession. It all started with NIGERIA’S EMEGENCE AS AFRICA’S LARGEST ECONOMY For many years South Africa’s grip of the African largest economy was something that could be termed as indisputable, and it must be said, if one really wants to put the crown on who it fits most, that the South Africans deserved it after all. Asides that, they seem to be the most developed in Africa, and so it all seemed that economic transactions in modern Africa rely more on their country for smooth running. But then, Nigeria overtook South Africa and took grip of the title. Believe me, the whole drama was just supposed to be as simple as that, but for the sudden circumstances surrounding it all, which invariably made it all seem like a ‘do-or-die contest. This was made manifest in the drama which seemed to be the next; THE SEIZURE OF THE $9.3 MILLION OWNED ALLEGEDLY OWNED BY THE NIGERIAN AUTHORITIES In the real sense, rational Nigerians went against the alleged smuggling of over 9.3 million dollars owned by the Nigerian authorities, for reasons being that, At that point in time, there was a campaign made by a Nigerian institution about the need for a cashless economy, the smuggling went totally against that policy. Also, Nigerian diplomats in South Africa were said to be oblivious of the whole issue, despite the insistence of the Nigerian authority stating that the money was meant for the purchase of arms, in our closets we all knew that the purchase of arms story was a cover-up. And at that, there was also a lingering issue over the high rate of corruption in the Africa’s most populous and largest economy, such that the smuggling story could have been validated in a way, thus, making all fingers point to the fact that it was one of the ‘stealing-is-not-corruption ideals' of some people in government. For what it was, Nigerian leaders were to be blamed for such an issue, except for the ulterior motives displayed by the South African authority (which is not far from being diplomatic, from my perspective) in simply taking that issue too far. Then came… …THE COLLAPSE AT SYNAGOGUE CENTRE: After the collapse which occurred on Friday, the 12th day of December, 2014, there were controversies that trailed the collapse of the church building at synagogue church of all nations. First came an account that stated that helicopters were seen hovering overhead that building shortly before the collapse, in fact, those accounts insisted on that submission and were determined to defend it anywhere (be it coroner), that isn’t my point of argument, but the foreigners who occupied that building, Investigation suggested, were more of South Africans. Interestingly, during the course of the evacuation of the remains to South Africa, the country were said to have deployed the team of medical workers who did the evacuation, thus ignoring completely the interference of concerned/assigned team with the Nigerian attachment. After which came… …THE #XENOPHOBIA PHENOMENON: It all seemed to be the outcome of the silent diplomatic strain that had been going on between the Nigerian authority and the South African authority, when the South African locals began to demand for the departure of the foreigners residing in their country. Like a battle they started it all, and in all of that I could perceive the presence of resounding diplomatic voices at the background, just behind the mask of the violence, which was made manifest by the confession of some of the locals who attested that they were out to fight the Nigerian residents (residing in South Africa) in particular. PREAMBLE Sequel to all that has been said about the incoming administration to be headed by Gen. Buhari (rtd), my anxiety about the incoming administration became heightened when the general was said to have stated that Nigerians should not expect a miracle, I think that is with regards to extent of the supposed decadence on ground. Of course that was a pointer to the fact that the septuagenarian-cum-retired general also got wind of the fact that much is being expected of him. That is not my point of argument, rather, my concern lies in the speculation that the incoming administration will perform better than previous administrations, but I will quickly add that it shall be definitely not more than the expectation of Nigerians. Given the time frame, I am of the opinion that Buhari’s performance might not be able to quench the thirst of Nigerians especially with respect to the bulk of expectations awaiting his official arrival into office. MY CENTRAL ARGUMENT/CLARIFICATION/JUSTIFICATION Brethren, by the expiration of Buhari’s tenure, don’t expect him to be seen as an achiever by the Nigerian populace, even if there are accomplishments he could boast of. And although there are short-comings with respect to the 'leadership institution' in Nigeria, I shall still be compelled to no longer subscribe to the school of thought that the problem of leadership is our major challenge in Nigeria, for the fact that of all the successive administrations that we have witnessed ever since the liberation of the country from foreign dictate, none has been able to satisfy the yearning of Nigerians, practically, none has been able to score above average in terms of performance (Although that statement does not intend to disapprove of the previous administrations) and so, why should we anticipate miracle at this time, bearing in mind that these leaders are sauces drawn from the same pot. Of a truth, the mistakes made by few of the leaders of previous administrations might have been that they surrounded themselves with followers of no good intent and that led to an outright failure. But if we (the followers) have checked the leaders and have found them to be culpable, one way or the other, then the followers also needs to be assessed because it is out of the abundance of those followers that the leaders were produced, in fact the followers could be said to have given birth to those leaders. That invariably means that something is wrong somewhere with even the followers! Whether my assertion is considered as true or not, we must not forget in a hurry the fact that amidst the followers lies individuals who have been opportune to hold position(s) of authority (no matter how small it may be) in their sections or domain and have resulted to total abuse of that position. It might be more devastating to note that amidst the followers lies lecturers in institutions of learning who will always complain about the people at the top with a no less difference of a treatment being meted to the students under him. Considering all of these, do you all think that the dividends of democracy or life impacting efforts (if there's any) can ever reach the grassroot? CONCLUSION On a conclusive note, I prefer to remain indifferent to expectations with respect to the president-elect, and I have my reasons. Permit me to say quite apologetically that even if Gen. Buhari is the saviour (as acclaimed by some quarters), he might still end up as one of those many leaders in the past, except the followers that makes up the total citizenship of the country decides to embrace the virtue of wholesomeness in terms of individual changes as to honesty, transparency, accountability, patriotism and fairness, which can itself serve as a benchmark for emerging administrations. Attitudinal change is the key, Change cannot just be anticipated without self-assessment, self-consciousness and self-discipline with respect to honesty and patriotism. It is only then that we can have amidst us leaders in future that will serve with a sincerity of purpose and succeed the ones who have almost wrecked the ship of this country, else, it is from the same pot that we shall continue to produce leaders, with our dream for competent leaders in this country becoming a mirage, and an unfolding stillbirth. AN OPEN LETTER TO THE GOVERNOR OF ONDO STATE, DR. ‘SEGUN RAHMAN MIMIKO GOVERNMENT HOUSE GROUND, ALAGBAKA, AKURE, ONDO STATE. Sir, BEFORE IT BECOMES TOO LATE As a well brought-up child whose love for the Yoruba philosophy (and core values) knows no bound, I shall be very lenient with my expression in this letter, considering most especially, the fact that you remain our father, the father of this state, therefore bear in mind, that the contents of this letter shall be intoned to suit a son-to-father conversation. It can be anticipated that as such, you shall put into consideration the content. Interestingly, this was the way Orunmila was said to have conversed with Olugbon and Aresa during the primitive age, consequently, their reign was said to have been significantly prosperous. King Herod was said to have despised the ‘word’ at the birth of Jesus, and history never forgave him. Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, as well followed suit by putting the ‘word’ forward to President Jonathan, and of all the circumstances, it was those that were able to hearken to the ‘word’ that had their reign as being recorded as being significantly successful. And although, “my teeth I know are immature, if I should break with them kolanut, you can shun, But when I break with them arguments, give my stinking mouth a second thought…” Initially this letter was meant to be written to the elected president, to congratulate him and express my anticipation for his government, but the stall in the economic growth, socio-political growth and other important aspects of the lives of the people of Ondo state, keeps knocking on the door of my subconscious, as such I am left with no other option than to raise my voice in solidarity with the people of the grassroots. Permit me to chip in here the fact that you wouldn’t have spent so much time and money during the campaign for Goodluck/Sambo’s quest, if your overall performance was rated by the citizens of the state as being satisfactory, in fact you wouldn’t have had to work tirelessly like you did prior to the general elections, your work would have simply spoken on your behalf. Moreover, I was an initial follower of your political ideology (a followership which ended with the expiration of your first term in office), and as such, the bulk of the work lies upon us to put right, the misdeeds of somebody who was once regarded as our political mentor, and that makes the writing of this letter both timely and important. I refuse to believe in insinuations that the defeat recorded by your political party in the last elections was as a result of some political miscalculation or your political adventures, because regardless of the political party or where you stand politically, what is important to us, at the grassroots is the efficient delivery of the dividends of democracy. To whom much is given, much is expected, that accounts for the reason why, among other things some of us still stood by you at a time when the entire population seems to be against you, until we continued to hope and hope and hope in vain for a change in your administrative attitude… Only if you shall hearken to the voice of the people at the grassroots, and create a distinct impression on the minds of the people, BEFORE IT BECOMES TOO LATE, a lot can be salvaged, especially with respect to historical record about you, and life out-of-office. Although, I cannot say precisely, if that can tell on the outcome of the forthcoming state assembly elections, but in my opinion, that is simply irreparable. The youths are demanding for the revitalization of the moribund industries in the state to create employment for them. They are requesting that the energy still bustling in them be utilized profitably, before it becomes diverted into futile adventures, They are demanding for a fair treatment as against the oppression which has become the order of the day, with regards to the armed men who have taken to the streets to embarrass both the innocent and the culpable, all this they demand, BEFORE IT BECOMES TOO LATE. The civil servants are asking for the payment of their salaries as at when due, with the inclusion of their welfare packages, the entrepreneurs are demanding for an enabling environment that would make their businesses thrive, as opposed to your exorbitant tax schemes. Farmers, and artisans are demanding for an improved credit facilities to create motivation which will in turn increase yield. The average citizen of the state is demanding for his share of the commonwealth in terms of provision of basic amenities. All this we are demanding BEFORE IT BECOMES TOO LATE. Permit me to end this letter by reminding you that the past is not as important as the present as it can never be mended. The important thing is posterity, and in a hope to be vindicated by posterity, I will suggest that you do what is right and best for the people of Ondo state, BEFORE IT BECOMES TOO LATE. NOW, AKURE HAS SPOKEN! Permit me at this point to say a happy new month to everyone, that alone is another peculiar form of greeting in this part of the African continent, considering especially the just concluded elections; And so, when I said ‘happy new month’, I believe that you all understand what I meant. I must also say that I was overwhelmed by the deed of Nigerians, most especially the good people of Akure, even as they remained quiet all-along until the outcome of the elections spoke their mind, they need to be commended most especially for maintaining the peace even after last Saturday’s election. They indeed proved that the gentility of a Tiger and its tigritude (the tiger being a symbol peculiar to the Akure people) should not be mistaken for cowardice. At a time prior to the election, I was compelled (by emotion)to write in order to clear a controversy of sort which was hinged on the political stand of the Akure people. Like a packaged discuss, I emphasized on the need for the incumbent governor of Ondo state to reconcile with the people of Akure town, if he was bent on delivering the state and the ‘one million votes’ in question to President Jonathan. I tried to convey a message which suggested that the governor should not underrate the Akure people. The statement read in part, “Akure town remains the state capital, it is a fact that cannot be argued. With a considerable population, the decision of the Akure people in an election remains an important factor in Ondo state and perhaps Nigeria as a whole”. I also stated the need to appease in the first place, the ancestors of Akure town, before forgiveness can be anticipated from the Akure people, “In my opinion, this is not the time for Governor Mimiko to start cajoling the people of Akure, rather, it is the time for him to ‘appease, the ancestors of Akure town whom he humiliated when he disrupted the event organized by the Akure youths, which was meant to foster unity and the progress of the town. It is the time to ‘appease’ the ancestors of Akure town whom the governor despised when he tactically deprived the people of Akure the proper political relevance.” All this, I believe was never given a consideration. Let me not continue to bore you all with the pre-election issues, as it became evident that in a united front the people of Akure spoke, and that indeed led to the emergence of Chief Alasoadura as the winner of the Ondo central senatorial seat as against the Governor’s candidate. Also, I make bold to say that a signal was sent, via sounding-votes of the Akure people which influenced quite greatly the result of the Presidential election, which was obtained in Ondo state, and at that Gen. Buhari won in Ondo state as opposed to some expectations and in the votes lies the magnitude of words left unspoken…“for when Akure speaks, a signal is always sent, and when they refuse not to speak on occasions when they are required to do so, their silence always demands an attention”. Without an iota of doubt, this is the beginning of the liberation of Akure from the shackles of political slavery orchestrated by some individuals who believe in the powers of this world. Conclusively, I want to congratulate the winners and commend the losers for embracing the spirit of sportsmanship especially in defeat. Politicians should take a cue from last Saturday’s elections, they should understand that “a good name is to be chosen rather than riches”. They should as well note that the measure of good deeds will be a determinant during elections (all other things being equal), as such they should devote their time for service to humanity. They should note as well that no condition is permanent, and that positions of authority is only a function of time, they last for a while and it is whatever good deeds that is made out if them (in terms of legacy) that lasts long.
