Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has said the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), lacks the power to declare the South West security outfit, Operation Amotekun, as illegal.
Makinde said though the AGF may interpret and advise the President if there are legal issues, he is not empowered to make his own laws.
He spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during his visit to a former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Wednesday.

The governor was accompanied by his Special Adviser on Security Matters and former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni; the Chairman, Advisory Council, Senator Hosea Agboola; and former Secretary to the Oyo State Government, Chief Layiwola Olakojo, among other aides.

Fielding questions from reporters, Makinde, who stated that he was in Abeokuta to greet Obasanjo for the New Year, frowned at Malami’s position on Operation Amotekun.

Hate Speech Bill: You Have No Business In Government If You’re Afraid Of Criticisms – Alaafin

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi 111, on Thursday, berated the National Assembly over the re-introduction of the anti-hate speech bill by the Senate.

OGBOMOSO INFO recalls that anti-hate speech bill, which seeks to regulate and punish people who make unguarded statements was recently re-introduced by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi.

But, the monarch, while speaking at a book presentation and platinum recognition as parts of activities marking the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Tribune titles, insisted that anyone who doesn’t want to be criticised has no business in government.

Oba Adeyemi spoke at the event attended by former Chief of Army Staff, General Theophilus Danjuma, foremost Afenifere leader, Chief Rueben Fasoranti, foremost Legal luminary, Chief Afe Babalola, former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, former Secretary to Oyo state Government, Chief Michael Koleosho and Group Managing Director of Odu’a Investment Company Limited, Mr. Adewale Raji.

Others at the event were; the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Professor Olu Akinkugbe, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, daughters of the Premier of defunct Western region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo; Mrs. Tola Oyediran and Dr. Adetokunbo Awolowo-Dosumu Editor in Chief of Nigerian Tribune, Mr. Edward Dickson.

The monarch, while addressing the gathering, challenged lawyers and other professionals not to allow the bill to sail through, saying death penalty should not be the punishment for abuse.

He said, “Gradually to an offence of hate speech that attracts penalty of death. If I have not killed anyone; and I give an opinion that is contrary to the government’s, will it be a sufficient reason for me to be charged for death penalty? Where are the lawyers in Nigeria? Constitutional lawyers in Nigeria, where are they? Can’t they speak up? Chief Olowu, you are here.

“Nobody is speaking up. If you don’t want to be criticised, then you don’t have to be in government. My friend Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe has a peculiar character and I wish he could continue to learn about the Constitutional lesson from Chief Obafemi Awolowo in his reply to Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. We have quotation and quotations from this literate man. I have read almost all his books, published. They are in my library. I can go on and on citing instances. During the Constitutional conferences that held in the 50s at Lancaster House, three giants from the country postulated different approaches to the Nigerian Independence. Sir Ahmadu Bello said North is for Northerners; East for Easterners and West for the Westerners. Azikiwe said, there should be one Constitution, one Country, one destiny.

“Awolowo rose up and said No! We are not talking about the Constitution that will be suitable for Nigeria. But what is suitable for Nigeria is when you have a multi lingual, multi national and multi religious country with diverse races. That before independence the whole school we had on ground was 123 for the whole of the North while the South had 5,000 schools. There is no way. That illiterate will continue to govern the literate people. It cannot work and it will not work.

“Awolowo projected what will be the question of North East, North Central. That of you don’t educate the people, the Almanjiri will become bandits. Today, in Zamfara and Yobe, the governments are now subjected to banditry. And they are exchanging these bandits, giving them money. How can government give bandits money?

“That is a collapse of governance and government. If you are a student of Constitution, you must believe Awolowo’s views. Well, I am not a politician but I understand politics. I don’t do partisan politics because I want to be progressive. In the whole of Nigeria when Awolowo started his free primary education, we felt it would not work. He started it. Two to three years after he started it, he appointed Taiwo to head for the review of the proposal and he came out with the position that in the next 30 to 40 years, the Western Region will be 60 years ahead of other areas in education.

“And that demography, of you study people like Professor Akinkugbe, who were their doctors, surgeons, they produced a sector of Obafemi Awolowo University by the Action Group government in 1963-64. If you pass out of primary school, you go to Teacher Training College and if you pass out, you would be given automatic admission to University. That was the reason they established the University of Ife.

“Then we had Agent General United Kingdom catering for the welfare of Western Nigerian students. They go to the school and when they returned, they had jobs already waiting for them. Now our graduates are roaming about the streets. There is no index of people who are out of school. Just three days ago, Governor Ganduje said that Kano has the largest number of out of school children.

Politics / We Inherited Almost Bankrupt State From Ajimobi – Makinde by Ogbomoso17(m): 10:36am On Dec 10, 2019
The Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde has said his administration inherited an almost bankrupt State from his predecessor, Abiola Ajimobi.

He urged Nigerians to join hands with anti-corruption agencies to fight corruption and stamp it out of the country, stressing that without eradicating corruption, no Nigerian citizen could experience dividend of democracy.

Makinde stated this on Monday in Ibadan during a rally organised by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan Zonal Office to commemoration the International Anti-Corruption Day themed, “Zero Tolerance to Corruption”.

The Governor, who pledged his support to EFCC in fighting corruption in Nigeria to a standstill, said that he inherited an almost bankrupt state due to the poor management of the state’s resources by his predecessor, pointing out, “Oyo State was almost bankrupt when we took over”.

According to him, with corruption ravaging the country, it may be difficult for the good old days to come.

“Do you know what corruption can do to you? Do you know what corruption can do to a nation? If you want free health system, free education, good road and infrastructural development, then fight corruption and kill it. Let me tell you, we have been able to achieve something because we are not corrupt.

“If we are corrupt, we cannot do what we are doing right now. If you see anybody engaging in corruption, expose such. My government will fight corruption down to the local level. We will tackle corruption even at the grassroots level”, he added.

He stated further, “Oyo State is happy to join EFCC to fight corruption. We are the first state in Nigeria to domesticate anti-graft law. We will ensure that whatever we do during this administration, we do it right”.

Earlier, the Zonal Head, EFCC, Ibadan, Mr Friday Ebelo, who sought collaboration with the state government to fight corruption, stated that in 2019, the commission in Ibadan secured convictions for 171 out of the 268 prosecuted for financial crimes.

He said, “Our investigations also led to temporary fixing of 1044 bank accounts, while 56 automobiles and 14 houses were impounded. We equally have several laptops, android phones and many other electronic devices confiscated in compliance with court orders. In the period under review, the zone also recovered on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria huge sums of money in both local and foreign currencies. These include a total of N211, 134,927.26. For the foreign currencies, we had $136,289 and €2000 and £765”

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) chapter, on Wednesday, suspended its 17-day-old lecture boycott.

The union embarked on a boycott of lectures on Monday, November 18, due to non-payment of salaries owed.

The ASUU Chairman, LAUTECH chapter, Biodun Olaniran, said the union has decided to resume academic activities to “honour” Governor Seyi Makinde ”and his requests”.

"We have agreed to put an end to the lecture boycott that has been on since November 18th following Governor Makinde's visit to LAUTECH. He has promised to pay two months salary and with this in mind, the union thought it best to resume academic activities. This is just a way of honouring him."

Also speaking on why he didn't regard the action as a strike but as a "lecture boycott", he said.

"As opposed to the public belief that this was a strike action, it was only a lecture boycott as academic staff were actively involved in other things asides lectures. The agreement was to do everything else asides teach students until something was done about our requests."

It was made known in the ASUU meeting that the strike action have been called off as a result of common ground being achieved by the management and the workers.

Politics / Kogi Election:oyo PDP Replies Apc,says Only Killers Will Celebrate Such Victory by Ogbomoso17(m): 1:17pm On Nov 20, 2019
The Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Tuesday, berated the State’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for celebrating the polluted electoral process which took place during the Kogi State governorship election held on November 16.

The Oyo PDP, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Engr Akeem Olatunji, said that only politicians with killer instincts, propensity for vote stealing and electoral corruption would celebrate the rape of democracy witnessed in Kogi last weekend.

The PDP spokesman commended the role played in Kogi State by the Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, declaring that as the Chairman of the PDP Kogi State Governorship Campaign Council, Governor Makinde discharged his responsibilities creditably and honourably.

The statement described a statement by the State’s chapter of APC, which attempted to mock the role played by Makinde and the loss of the PDP in the election, stating that the APC displayed “a show of buffoonery and the height of insensitivity to the families of ten persons who were felled by the bullets of sponsored marauders, who denied the PDP of its victory.”

According to the statement, the claim by the APC that Governor Makinde abandoned his duty post to relocate to Kogi State was untrue, baseless and an indication that the Oyo State APC has become frustrated with itself, being the bad loser that it has proven to be.

“Since it was thoroughly defeated by Engineer Seyi Makinde at the March 9 Governorship election in Oyo State, the APC in the state has become an object of pity that has been clawing at one form of hallucination after the other,” the PDP said.

The party added: “For want of what to say, the APC criticised Governor Makinde for allegedly abandoning his duty post, failing to keep major cities clean and equally failing, according to it, to pay the new N30,000 minimum wage.

“All these are at best phantom allegations, tissues of lies, opportunistic comments and a display of arrant ignorance.
“The APC is busy misinforming the public about the minimum wage when it is clear to the workers that the parameters for payment of the new minimum wage were just released by the Federal Government on the day it made the statement. How do they expect the Governor to pay wages that the parameters were not clarified by the Federal authorities?

“Besides, the APC, which ran a government that was unable to pay the national minimum wage of N18,000 for eight years previously should be ashamed of dabbling in such a discussion at this stage.

“It is on record that Governor Seyi Makinde has been doing its best to succeed in the task of keeping Ibadan and the major cities clean, though the challenges being faced in the sector right now are due to the booby traps set by the APC government, which never wished the PDP and the people well.”
The statement further stated: “Makinde, who the people know as a governor with a difference, will never abandon his duty post without doing the right thing. He has been working round the clock to keep Oyo State clean despite concerted efforts by APC loyalists to sabotage the government.”

The PDP maintained that the description of Governor Makinde as an ‘unofficial caretaker governor with a fake mandate’ demonstrated the height of irresponsibility and crass ignorance of APC leaders.

“Let it be stated clearly that the machinations of the APC to benefit where they did not sow will not materialise in Oyo State. The people of Oyo State voted massively to reject the APC and bring in Governor Makinde. The people are resolved to defend that mandate by all means necessary.

Politics / INEC Presents N1.9M To Family Of Late Corper Who Died During Election In Oyo by Ogbomoso17(m): 12:56pm On Nov 20, 2019
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has presented a cheque of N1.9 million to the family of Late Miss Kemisola Adeniran, a corps member who died in Oyo State during the electoral process.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the cheque was presented to the deceased’s next of kin and sister, Mrs Folasade Adeyemi, at INEC office in Ibadan on Tuesday.

NAN recalls that the late Adeniran, who was until her death serving in Ona-Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State, died in February in road accident while returning home from INEC training.

Dr Mutiu Agboke, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), said that the commission had acted in line with its life insurance policy for election officials, including adhoc personnel before and during elections.

“On behalf of the commission and entire INEC staff in Oyo State, I wish to express my profound deep regret for the loss of our illustrious daughter/corps member.

“We also express the sincere condolence of the commission to the family over this irreparable loss.

“Though, the commission’s insurance policy makes provision for both permanent and adhoc staff, nothing can be counted worthy for the life lost.

“This presentation of token is just to cushion the effect of this irreparable loss to the deceased family,” he said.

The REC appreciated the invaluable services rendered by corps members, saying that INEC would continue to honour its part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NYSC.

He enjoined all stakeholders, particularly the media and security agencies, to collaborate with INEC to establish violence free electioneering process.

Agboke called on politicians to eschew both electoral and political violence, urging them and supporters to desist from fake news as well as hate speeches.

According to him, “we should all learn the culture of doing things right. I am passionate about this because we are losing our staff. Why will anyone be happy at the death of others.

“The media should partner with Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC). Electioneering is not during election alone. Let there be collective solution to these problem to have a better society.”

Mrs Eniola Ambekemo, the State Coordinator, NYSC, commended INEC for fulfilling its agreement on the corps members in terms of insurance.

She described deceased’s death as very unfortunate, saying she would have passed out of service with her colleagues in October.

Politics / Oyo Assembly Passes Anti-open Grazing Bill Into Law by Ogbomoso17(m): 10:33pm On Oct 24, 2019
The Oyo House of Assembly has passed the anti-open grazing bill into law, says it will foster peace and promote Agricultural business in the State.

The bill which was passed at its Thursday plenary is to avoid continuous damages and end lost of lives and unquantifiable investment to constant clashes between herders and crop farmers.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin appealed to residents of the state to ignore falsehoods and misconceptions of the prohibition of Open Rearing and Grazing of Livestock bill that are capable of triggering hostility between the herders and local farmers' communities.

According to him, public hearing was held in which critical reviews and opinions of all concerned stakeholders, individuals, groups and experts were accommodated and considered before been passed into law.

“We assured the people that all suggestions and memoranda of understanding submitted by various groups, agencies and representatives of different communities and tribes on the open rearing and grazing regulation bill 2019 was painstakingly looked into before it was passed into law.

“I am appealing to everyone to shun the rumour spreading that the law is to make life and business unbearable for some targeted group or set of people, rather it seeks to promote peace among residents and different tribes in Oyo state.

The Speaker maintained that the Ninth Oyo State House of Assembly through the law was only seeking legal framework to address the issue of open rearing and grazing as well as encourage and protect the economic activities of others who are into agricultural related ventures and the residents.

“Both herders and crop farmers are farmers, and because laws are made to correct, definitely we do not expect it to favour anyone 100 percent. I implore them to embrace developmental changes this law is bringing into the agricultural business after it enactment.

“Let us consider partnership, cluster farming, cooperative ranches and other helpful methods that are working in successful neighbouring country. If we truly desire development and growth in our agriculture, then we have to get ready and adopt new strategies to boost our produces and reduce lost of resources and lives,” he added.
