Cleric sustains 4-year philanthropy, donates foodstuffs to 300 elderly in Anambra

From Elekwachi Chinedum, Onitsha

A Catholic priest, Fr Emmanuel Obinma, popularly known by as Ebube Muonso has distributed bags of rice to over 300 elderly persons in Nkwelle Ezunaka in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra state.

The beneficiaries, predominantly in their seventies and above also received their monthly salary from the cleric who had carried out the gesture for barely four years.

Speaking to newsmen weekend, Ebube Muonso, Spiritual Director, Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry said the gesture which had become ritual was borne out of his love and passion for the elderly.

He also disclosed plans to visit the hospitals to settle medical bills of patients to the tune of N50million.

He said, "I came here today to see the aged and elderly in my community. It has been a routine visit. I cherish old age so much both my brother priests and lay faithful.

"All of them, including the priests are under my monthly salary. I also share foodstuffs to them from time to time.

"Today, over 300 of them from this community alone are going home with a bag of rice. Globally, those who benefit from my philanthropy are countless.

"For almost four years we've been doing this consistently, and it will continue till my life time. You can see the smiles radiating in their faces. That's what gives me joy."

The cleric advised youths to learn the attitude of reverencing those older than them so as to enjoy longevity.

"Young people must learn to revere old age. If you want to live long, you must rever the elders. If you want to reach their age, you must respect them, by being kind to them so they can pour their blessings on you.

"Even though I'm a priest, they'll pray for me which they've always done on daily basis. That's why I don't lack. How the money comes I can't explain. It's just a testament of the saying, "givers never lack."

He added, "This week is for charity. Next week, we'll be visiting the hospitals to settle medical bills to the tune of N50m. The money has already been earmarked for the visit.

"After the hospital visits, I'll go to the desert to stay with my God without food. We expect massive miracles thereafter because we're serving a miracle working God."

Highpoint of the event was special prayers offered by the beneficiaries to the priest who also blessed them in return.

Obosi political twosome: Anyamene, Igboebisi win Anambra NDC primary elections

By Chiedu Uche Okoye

Engr. Eric Anyamene, who is seeking to represent Idemili North and South federal constituency in the national assembly and Hon. Obinna Igboebisi, who is jostling to represent Idemili North Constituency in the Anambra Assembly, have won the NDC Primary elections.

Anyamene and Igboebisi are two illustrious sons of Obosi, who are toeing the lines of such great Obosi-born political juggernauts as Senator Mike Ajaegbo and Hon. Obinna Chidoka.

The NDC primary election, which took place at the civic centre, Ogidi, Anambra state, on May 29, 2026, drew a mammoth crowd of NDC party faithful.

But for the combined team of security personnel deployed in the place to maintain law and order, there would have been violent clashes between supporters of political rivals angling for the same tickets.

And the popular option A4, which requires party members to queue behind their favourite or chosen political aspirants, was used to conduct the primary election, successfully.

During the election, innumerable number of NDC members stood behind the banner of Engr. Eric Anyamene. And the line of people who chose him, which snaked for a long distance, extended beyond the gate of the civic centre.

Anyamene was battling for NDC ticket to contest the Idemili North and South federal constituency of the lower Chambers of the national assembly. And his other opponents for the NDC tickets were Uche Harris Okonkwo, Chidiogo Constance Ikokwu, and others.

And for the Idemili North Constituency in the Anambra state assembly election, Hon. Obinna Igboebisi, a man-mountain, battled his town's man, Mr. Emma Nwobosi, for the party's ticket. His line of supporters outpaced that of Nwobosi.

With this victory, the coast is clear for Hon. Igboebisi to fly the NDC flag in the 2027 Idemili North Constituency, Anambra assembly election.

Engr. Eric Anyamene will wait for the compilation of the Idemili North and Idemili South results to know his fate, however.

But the political augury has said that he will be the NDC candidate for the Idemili North and South federal constituency election, what with the teeming crowd chanting his name endlessly.

His research focuses on AI adoption, digital inclusion, algorithmic trust, governance, and the societal impact of emerging technologies.

Speaking on the appointment, Aniagoh described the opportunity as “far bigger than a title,” noting that African universities must begin positioning themselves not just as consumers of technology, but as contributors to global conversations around responsible AI, digital governance, and future-ready education systems.

“We are entering a period where universities across Africa can no longer approach technology education from a purely theoretical standpoint. The conversations are now about AI, digital trust, data governance, automation, inclusion, and responsible innovation,” he stated.

“At Olivia University, part of my contribution will focus on strengthening conversations around AI readiness, digital transformation, research innovation, and practical technology education within emerging academic environments.”

His appointment comes at a time when conversations around AI adoption and Africa’s role in the future digital economy are gaining increasing global attention.
Recently, Aniagoh’s research abstract titled “The AI Divide” was accepted for presentation at the 2026 Postgraduate Research Symposium of the University of Hertfordshire Business School. The research explores trust, inclusion, and unequal AI adoption within society, particularly among underrepresented and digitally excluded populations.

Industry observers note that the combination of academic research, practical digital transformation experience, and institutional engagement positions Aniagoh among a growing generation of African professionals shaping conversations around ethical and inclusive AI adoption.

With the Olivia University appointment, Aniagoh says his mission remains clear:
“I do not just want to talk about the future. I want to help build systems that prepare people for it.”

Anambra Govt Receives 2 Container loads of Medical Equipment from MedShare, Coca-Cola Nigeria

By Ebele Egoh

The Anambra State Hospital Administrator, Dr. Frank Ifeanaeme, has received two 40-foot containers of medical equipment donated by MedShare in collaboration with The Coca-Cola Company under the Safe Birth Initiative (SBI).

The donation followed a pre-assessment exercise conducted in Anambra State several years ago to identify critical medical equipment and supplies needed to improve healthcare delivery across the state.

The initiative is aimed at enhancing the capacity of health facilities to save the lives of women and children, while reducing birth-related complications.

The Coca-Cola Safe Birth Initiative is a maternal and neonatal healthcare programme designed to reduce maternal and newborn mortality in Nigeria.

The programme focuses on strengthening selected public hospitals through the provision of essential medical equipment, repair and maintenance of existing devices, as well as technical capacity building for healthcare workers and biomedical professionals.

As part of the initiative, MedShare’s Chief Biomedical Engineer recently concluded intensive training for technicians and biomedical engineers in the state, which centred on the repair and maintenance of medical equipment to ensure optimal functionality of both newly donated and existing devices in health facilities.

Speaking on the development, Dr. Ifeanaeme described the training as a critical component of the Safe Birth Initiative programme, noting that it would ensure maximum uptime of medical equipment and improve hospital operations and patient outcomes.

He explained that the hands-on training would equip participants with practical skills required for effective maintenance of medical equipment, ultimately contributing to improved healthcare service delivery in the state.

Among the 438 medical equipment and supplies contained in the donation are baby incubators, baby warmers, refrigerators, medical-grade refrigerators, electric beds with mattresses, oxygen concentrators, nebulizers, Ambu bags, baby positioners, adult wheelchairs, and X-ray Kodak screens, among others.

HealthAnambra Govt Begins Administering Long-acting Injectable To Prevent HIV by Ogemdiozoemenam(op): 6:49pm On May 24
Anambra Govt begins administering Long-acting Injectable to prevent HIV

By OGEMDI OZOEMENAM, Awka

The Government of Anambra State has commenced vaccination of long-acting injectable to prevent HIV infection in the state.

Named LENACAPAVIR (LEN PrEP), the vaccine is advancing HIV prevention and would be taken twice annually free of charge.

Sponsored by The Global Fund in partnership with National AIDS, Viral Hepatitis & STs Control Programme (NASCP) and State AIDS, Viral Hepatitis & STs Control Programme (lSASCP), the vaccine can be received at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka; Federal Medical Centre, Onitsha; Trauma Centre, Oba; Comprehensive Health Centre, Ukpo; Comprehensive Health Centre, Neni and OSS, Awka.

The flag-off which took place at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Amaku Awka, attracted the representatives of World Health Organisation (WHO), Anambra State Agency for the Control of AIDS (ANSACA), National Action Committee on AIDS (NACA), Network of People with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, among others

Performing the flag-off ceremony, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike said Anambra is focusing on prevention as a way of eliminating HIV in the state, saying the state is recording a high prevalence of HIV because many residents are testing and checking their status regularly.

He described the programme as apt as it would strengthen HIV prevention among individuals and communities at high-risk levels.

While applauding Governor Chukwuma Soludo for giving enabling environment to the ministry and supporting partners to operate, Dr Obidike however warned that the drug is not to be sold or repackaged for influential people.

"Object of action of this drug is two weeks. Those exposed take it zero to 72hrs, meaning that it started acting between one to two weeks."

On her part, the Chief Medical Director, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku-Awka, Dr Maureen Umeakuewulu expressed optimism that by this intervention, the incidence of HIV among Anambrarians and Nigeria will crash drastically so that soonest, the focus will be on elimination instead of reduction.

She described the programme as timely at a time when the country is witnessing an increasing rate of HIV prevalence among the adolescence and young adults.

"It is a privilege to consider COOUTH for this campaign. The official rollout of this PrEP is apt at this time. For me, it's not only for high-risk population, but for everybody. Prevention is very important. For our partners, we are working towards making the teaching hospital a global centre."

Dr Umeakuewulu further thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for selecting Anambra as one of the eight states for the rollout of this noble intervention and applauded Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo for his good works in the state.

Presenting the HIV Burden in Anambra State, the State AIDS Programme Coordinator, Dr Tonia Mbagwu said Anambra has the highest prevalence rate in the South East at 2.4 percent while 97,429 persons are living with the disease in the state.

According to her, 176 health facilities offer comprehensive HIV services in the state while 1,968 facilities give HIV services in the state.

She identified how behavioural, structural and biomedical patterns can help in the management of HIV prevalence.

"The drug is a Pre-exposure Prevention Mechanism (PEP) given to those who are exposed to HIV infection within zero to 72 hours, received at a nearby general hospital.

"It is also a preventive medication against HIV. Before now, we have the oral PEP taken daily, we later came up with the Injectable which is taken twice a year, every six months.

"Again, it is meant for high risk population (sex workers, transgender, gay union) and discordants (one partner is a carrier, the other is not).

"Thus, we are looking at a combination therapy against HIV. This is because this vaccine prevents you from getting HIV but won't stop you from contacting Candidiasis, Hepatitis B or other sexually transmitted infections. So we advice you have a dual protection mechanism for the protection of HIV, usage of condom inclusive.

"We have a national launch of the programme LEN PrEP in March, and is being implemented by eight states of the federation including Anambra State," Dr Mbagwu concluded.

Anambra NIPR Partners Academy to Train Teachers on Public Relations Values

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Anambra State Chapter has reached agreement with Gran Hermamo Academy, Awka for the training of its officials on how to leverage on public relations to raise output.

This is part of the Chapter's commitment to assist academic institutions to manage trust, reputation, and communication between students, staff, parents, the community, and regulators, a release signed by PRO of the Chapter, Comrade Ogemdi Ozoemenam stated.

Chairman of the Chapter, Dr Ngozi Ulogu during a courtesy visit to the school described public relations as a management function which schools should internalise to create mutual relationship among its key stakeholders.

She maintained that this is necessary to build trust with parents and the community, shape reputation and enrollment, manage crisis, improve internal communication, support fundraising, partnerships as well as teaching students media literacy by example.

"Parents choose and stay at schools where they feel informed and respected. Public relations creates channels for clear updates on policies, events, safety, and student progress. That cuts down on rumours and replaces them with facts. In places where school funding or enrollment depends on public perception, this trust directly affects survival", the PRO quoted her as saying.

Responding, Chairman & Proprietor of the Academy, Mr Chijioke Nwajioha appreciated NIPR for the visit and accepted to partner with the Chapter on training of its staff, as well as taking part in its upcoming national programmes.

By Chiedu Uche Okoye

The president general of Obosi Development Union (ODU), Barr. Chimezie Obi, has refuted the news report broadcast(ed) by Ebere Ekeokpara of BBC Igbo unit, which stated that the master-mind of Dr. Edwin Emegoakor's abduction, Mr. Fabulous, was arrested at Obosi, Anambra state.

The story further stated that Mr. Fabulous' house, which was alleged to be located at Obosi, was destroyed by irate Obosi youths.

However, Barr. Obi, who spoke to select journalists on May 12, 2026 in his office at Obosi, refuted the story, saying that Mr. Fabulous was arrested in his house, which is located at Abommili estate, Mgbachu, Nkpor, Anambra state.

"The story is not true. Mr. Fabulous, who master-minded the abduction of Dr. Emegoakor, the chief medical director of Crown Hospital, Nkpor, was arrested in his house at Abommili estate, Mgbachu Nkpor," Obi said.

The town union leader advised news reporters to cross check their facts to avoid misrepresentation of facts that would embarrass innocent people and impugn the reputation of a town.

"Reporters should verify the stories they read online before adopting it as true.

"And a broadcast station as big as BBC should have done better to ask questions before adopting a story, especially as a whole community of people was mentioned," Obi said.

On May 7, 2026, kidnappers stormed Crown Hospital, Nkpor, Anambra state and abducted its Chief Medical Director, Sir Edwin Emegoakor. The mastermind of the operation was Mr. Fabolous, who trades in motor spare parts at Mgbuka motor spare parts market, Obosi.

But Emegoakor, who was kept in Mr. Fabolous house, was rescued by security operatives, who raided the house. And Mr. Fabolous was arrested. His house was destroyed by the irate Nkpor youths, too.

NIPR Anambra seeks Strategic Partnerships with SSG, State Assembly, HoS

By OGEMDI OZOEMENAM, Awka

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Anambra State Chapter, has intensified efforts to expand its frontiers of collaboration and professional impact through strategic visits to key government institutions in the state.

The delegation, led by the State Chairman, Dr. Ngozi Ulogu, paid a courtesy visit to the Secretary to Anambra State Government, Mrs Chiamaka Nnake seeking to explore areas of collaboration in promoting adherence to professional standards in work ethics and supporting initiatives that enhance the image and reputation of Anambra State through conscious awareness creation.

The visit, according to the team, was part of ongoing efforts by the leadership of the chapter to reposition NIPR as a critical stakeholder in governance and reputation management.

Dr Ulogu noted that the Chapter is ready to partner with the State Government in delivering effective communication strategies that will further consolidate these achievements and project the state more favorably on the national and global stages.

She solicited State Government’s sponsorship for the logistics of chapter members to World Public Relations Forum (WPRF) in November this year in Abuja, and for the Chapter's usual Anambra Night, a forum through which the Institute showcases the government activities and dividends of governance to the world.

As a statutory body regulating and promoting the practice of public relations in Nigeria, Dr Ulogu assured that NIPR is committed to upholding professionalism, ethical standards, excellent and responsible communication across both the public and private sectors.

While congratulating Nnake for her recent appointment as first female SSG in the state, Dr Ulogu expressed optimism that she will change the face of administration, governance and ensure the effective implementation of policies in Anambra State.

Contributing, a former Council member of NIPR and fellow of the Institute, Rev Fr Prof BAC Obiefuna stressed the need for every information officer in Anambra to have public relations skills to market the state effectively.

He expressed optimism that with the SSG on the Chapter's side, members of NIPR will achieve their goals.

Responding, Mrs Nnake said some of the things itemised by Dr Ulogu are achievable like registration of information officers which falls within the purview of a new Commissioner for Information.

She charged members of the Chapter to do their best in complimenting the efforts of the state government to market Anambra State to the wider world.

The SSG promised to partner with NIPR for a sustainable information management of the state.

Later, the NIPR Anambra State Chapter visited the State Head of Service, Barr Mrs Ngozi Iwouno, mni, where it advocated stronger partnership in capacity building and professional training for civil servants.

Dr. Ulogu emphasized the importance of equipping public servants with modern public relations skills to enhance service delivery, noting that specialized training in reputation management would significantly improve public perception of government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

The NIPR team also visited the Anambra State House of Assembly, where it sought collaboration, particularly in areas of staff training, image management, and participation in the forthcoming 2026 World Public Relations Week (WPRW) conference scheduled to hold in Abuja later this year 2026.

Speaking during the visit, the Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Somtochukwu Udeze, described the engagement as a commendable initiative and a step in the right direction.

He highlighted the core responsibilities of the legislature, which include lawmaking, oversight, and appropriation, stressing that the Assembly is not part of the executive arm of government.

Rt. Hon. Udeze assured the delegation that while direct financial sponsorship may not be feasible, the Assembly is open to partnerships in staff training and capacity development, provided formal proposals are submitted for consideration.

He added that the legislature operates through committees and remains committed to initiatives that add value and promote a progressive governance framework in the state.

Earlier, the Head of Service, Barr Mrs Ngozi Iwouno, mni, welcomed the NIPR team and expressed willingness to collaborate, urging the Chapter to submit detailed proposals outlining areas requiring partnership for proper evaluation.

Other members of the delegation who spoke during the visits included a former Chairman of the Anambra NIPR Chapter, Rev. Fr. Prof. B.A.C. Obiefuna, the Chapter Secretary, Dr Chinedu Ekweonu; and the Welfare Officer, CSP Josephine Ihunwo who all underscored the importance of sustained professional training in strengthening public sector communication.

The visits are part of NIPR Anambra’s broader strategy to deepen institutional relationships and promote excellence in public communication across the state.

The institute maintained that comprehensive public relations training across the workforce would help reposition Anambra State’s public service among the most efficient and responsive in Nigeria.###

Progressives working together doesn't exist in Anambra, APC tells Soludo

By OGEMDI OZOEMENAM, Awka

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has affirmed that there is nothing like progressives working together in Anambra State as propagated by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The Governor had always been projecting that he is in good working relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and APC at the centre, hence progressives working together.

But clarifying this misconception in Awka during the inauguration of the State Officers of the party and Head of Directorates on Friday, the State Chairman of APC, Senator Emmanuel Anosike said the concept of progressives working together does not exist in the state.

"There is nothing like progressives working together. You don't just rush to Abuja and take pictures with a celebrity like Mr President, just to create false impression. However, if you feel that Progressives are Working Together, leave your party and join APC; contest election under APC and we will support you. Our hands are open because we have only one APC across the Federation.

"Again, if you are working for Tinubu, you should be talking to us; not the more you look, the less you see kind of game. Besides, you cannot be working together when you hijacked all local government positions in the state."

On the preparedness of the party in the forthcoming general election 2027, Senator Anosike said APC in Anambra state is deploying her full arsenal to win every contested position in the election.

According to him, the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu's administration is visible across every state in the South East including Anambra State.

"We are going to send our first eleven to National Assembly Abuja to work with Mr President. If you are working with Mr President, you cannot come to National Assembly with a different party. You cannot be an attachie to somebody.

"APC is APC across every state of the federation including FCT. So, be proud to be a member of APC because there is nowhere in the South East that you won't have the feel of Mr President," he said.

While calling on every Anambrarian that believes in the ideals of APC to join the party, Senator Anosike urged every APC member that wants to contest election, to come out in full force.

He however maintained that many people have already registered for membership of the party in the state.

"APC is prepared for next year to show capacity to Mr President, having party office in every ward in the state. In the next few weeks, you will hear the music of APC playing everywhere. We have all the support from party leadership in South East, Governor Hope Uzodinma, National Working Committee (NWC), National Executive Council (NEC) and Mr President, Tinubu.

"Our President is a Maradona in election while Hope Uzodinma is a Ronaldo. Thus, we are fortified on how to score goals come 2027," Anambra APC Chairman concluded.###

Reform vs Sabotage: Who Leaked the Tiger Base Inspection?

By Okechukwu Nwanguma
April 20, 2026

There is a compelling reason to believe that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, did not authorize a symbolic or cosmetic inspection when he deployed Deputy Inspector-General Margaret Ochalla to Imo State. The stated objective - to enforce professionalism, ensure compliance with the rule of law, and safeguard the rights of detainees - aligns with ongoing reform signals from the Force leadership. If anything, the timing of the visit - coming on the heels of serious allegations raised by the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) - suggests an intention to confront, not conceal, the truth.

But if that is the case, then something clearly went wrong.

Credible reports indicate that operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, widely known as Tiger Base, may have received advance notice of the DIG’s “unscheduled” visit. What followed was a hurried clearing of detention cells - effectively removing individuals allegedly held under inhuman conditions. If accurate, this was not just an administrative adjustment; it was a calculated act of evasion. It raises a far more serious issue than the original allegations: the possibility that elements within the system are actively sabotaging oversight efforts.

This is the paradox confronting police reform in Nigeria. Leadership may signal commitment to accountability, but entrenched networks within operational units often possess both the incentive and the means to resist scrutiny. When inspections can be anticipated and stage-managed, they cease to be tools of accountability and become exercises in deception.

The key question, therefore, is no longer limited to what is happening inside Tiger Base. It is now equally about who leaked the inspection - and why.

A leak of this nature is not a trivial breach. It undermines command authority, compromises the integrity of internal oversight, and enables the destruction or concealment of evidence. It effectively warns those who may have something to hide, giving them time to sanitize records, relocate detainees, and construct defensible narratives. In any serious institution, such a breach would trigger an immediate and thorough internal investigation.

If the Nigeria Police Force is serious about reform, this is a moment that demands decisive action. The Inspector-General must order a targeted probe into the source of the leak that preceded the DIG’s visit. This should not be treated as routine indiscipline, but as a potential act of obstruction - one that may involve officers within or connected to the command structure.

At the same time, the underlying allegations cannot be overshadowed. The reported shooting of detainees, the questionable official narratives, allegations of extortion, and the possible collusion with local vigilante actors all require independent and transparent investigation. Accountability cannot stop at identifying who tipped off Tiger Base; it must extend to uncovering what they were trying to hide.

What is at stake is larger than a single unit or incident. It is the credibility of the Nigeria Police Force’s reform agenda. If internal oversight can be compromised from within, then public assurances of accountability will ring hollow.

The Inspector-General now has an opportunity to send a clear message: that reform is not just policy rhetoric, but an institutional commitment backed by consequences. Identifying and sanctioning those responsible for the leak would be a critical first step. Ensuring that Tiger Base - and similar units - are subjected to truly independent scrutiny would be the next.

Anything less risks reinforcing a dangerous perception: that even when the leadership seeks the truth, the system is designed to hide it.

Mothering Sunday: Odili Describes Mothers As Cornerstone Of Families, Calls For Women Empowerment, Abolition Of Harmful Traditional Practices

‎As Catholic mothers celebrate mothering Sunday today, Sunday April, 19th 2026, the frontline candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chief Primus Ugochukwu Odili (Mgbologu Okosisi) has described Mothers as the cornerstone of families, calling for women empowerment and abolition of all harmful practices against women.

‎In his mothering Sunday message to Ndi Nne Anambra North, Okosisi Aguleri made it clear that mothers are critical to the survivability of every nation, adding that without mothers, the society would be without direction.

‎The APGA Anambra North frontline Senatorial aspirant called on mothers to emulate the virtuous of "Holy Mother Mary", whose humility despite being the mother of the Son of God, brought herself to the lowest ebb to earn her position.

‎Chief Odili who equally praised her wife for her humility, doggedness and steadfastness in building a happy home, note that for society to progress, mothers must be given their pride of place in the society.

‎He concluded by asking fathers to always support their wives to entrench a morally sound society, where society would be devoid of moral decadence, criminality, and above all, be uprightly sound to enable economic growth which women are the enablers for an egalitarian society.

APGA adopts Direct Primary, Option A4 to choose candidates for 2027

By OGEMDI OZOEMENAM, Awka

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has affirmed that it's tickets for all elective positions for 2027 General Elections and beyond shall be based on direct primaries and Option A4 system.

This include selection of candidates for Senate, House of Representatives and House of Assembly for next year while that of Mayors and Governorship positions shall follow the same method in subsequent years.

This was the consensus at the South-East Zonal Stakeholders’ meeting held in Awka, the Anambra state capital over the weekend.

Addressing the gathering, the leader of the Party, Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo called for an immediate end to the "trade by barter" approach to politics, where the party is used merely as a temporary platform for personal ambition.

He noted that APGA leadership is determined to stop transactional primaries where party officials feed fat on aspirants, most of who would not get the ticket, after being scammed or defrauded.

"Now nobody, no matter his political status, can help you secure any ticket of your choice except the ordinary voter and member of the party.

"There should be ways of benefiting from the party, not defrauding aspirants.

"APGA became the first party to digitize its register in 2024, ensuring a 21-day submission window as required by law. Every registered member now holds the right to vote or be voted for. The party has officially adopted the Option A-4 mode for primaries to ensure maximum visibility and fairness", he stated.

"We must build this party to be a proper movement, not a mercenary platform. The era of the 'gift-ticket' must now be over. We are rebuilding a party where loyalty matters and where tickets are not for sale."

To address long-standing growth hurdles, the Governor proposed a return to the "student days" model of political association, where members contribute via dues to maintain good standing as a way of party funding. A dedicated committee will be established to design a sustainable funding mechanism in order to move the party away from a business-dependent model, according to Governor Soludo, has hindered APGA's expansion.

The Governor concluded with a charge to members to commit to the party’s long-term survival, urging aspirants to focus on their chosen elective positions with integrity rather than "holding briefs" or jumping from one platform to another.

With these reforms, APGA aims to transition into a disciplined, sustainable national movement built on the pillars of transparency, equity, and justice.

Earlier, the National Chairman of APGA, Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa unveiled the party’s roadmap to modernization in line with the new Nigeria Electoral Act, highlighting the new regime to include: Digital Registration, Direct Primaries, Option A-4, and Abolishing Bundled Forms.

"The party officially adopted the Option A-4 mode for primaries to ensure maximum visibility and fairness. In a move to ensure quality control, aspirants must now purchase an "Expression of Interest" form and pass a screening before being allowed to purchase a final form which is Nomination Form".

Barr Ezeokenwa further presented a new Code of Conduct to strictly regulate neutral behavior of party officials. "Any officer wishing to campaign for a specific aspirant must resign their position immediately.

"They must remain neutral. Meeting of party officials must in be in designated venues like party office and not private homes or hotels.

"Any aspirant procuring thugs to disrupt party primary or use money to induce party officials, shall be disqualified.

"As an aspirant, we want you to canvass for votes from party members and urge them to participate in the ongoing digital registration," Ezeokenwa concluded.

Later, the South East Zone of the party, moved a vote of confidence on Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo for his sterling performance in Anambra State.

The motion was moved by the National Vice Chairman South East, Rev Augustine Ehiemere and seconded by the Assistant National Secretary, Barr Ogueri Ehirim.

Speaking to our Correspondent, some party leaders described the meeting as the first gathering of its kind in over two decades, stressing that it's served as a platform to announce radical changes aimed at ending "mercenary politics" and institutionalizing transparency.###

Mothering Sunday: Anyamene calls for the empowerment of women

By Chiedu Uche Okoye

Engr. Eric Anyamene, a politician aspiring to represent Idemili North and South federal constituency in the National Assembly, has called for the empowerment of women whom he described as the foundations on whom homes are built.

A devout Christian of the Catholic denomination and philanthropist of note, Anyamene made the call on the occasion of the commemoration of the Mothering Sunday by the Catholic Church.

He made the call for women empowerment against the background of the good morals, which women inculcate in their children, and the enormous sacrifices they make to build their homes.

"A mother is the first teacher, the first nurturer, and often the silent Pillar of sacrifice.

"In homes across Idemili LGAs in Anambra state, they carry burdens that are rarely seen, yet their impact shape destinies.

"So Mothering Sunday offers us the opportunity to reflect on the foundation-mother- on which every family, community, and nation is built," Anyamene said.

Engr. Anyamene, also, paid glowing tribute to his mother, Ezinne Mrs. J. C Anyamene, who, together with her husband, raised six kids, who have excelled in their careers.

"My mother is a woman of extra-ordinary strength, grace, and sacrifice.

"Her life is a testament to what true motherhood represents-selflessness, endurance, and unconditional love.

"Whatever I have become today is rooted in the values she instilled in me," Anyamene said.

More so, Ambassador Augusta Ebunam, leader of the Obosi Development Union (ODU), Women Wing, said that the commemoration of the Mothering Sunday in the Catholic Church reminds the catholic faithful and other people that women play noble and indispensable roles for the betterment of our society.

" Mothering Sunday reminds us of the need to appreciate women not just on a Mothering Sunday but all the time.

"It offers us the opportunity to recognize the strength and importance of mothers in shaping lives and building homes.

"So on Mothering Sunday, we shall reflect on the sacrifices, love, and care that women give," Ebunam said.

Again, Ogechukwu Ewudo-Okoye, a devoted member of the Catholic Church, who worships at St. John's Catholic, Obosi, Anambra state, advised mothers to monitor their children, who are of impressionable ages, to prevent them from being influenced, negatively by peer pressure.

She further said that mothers deserve to be honoured and appreciated for they are stabilizing forces in most troubled homes.

" In homes where men are given to excesses, women are stabilizing forces there.

"They step in the gap and play the roles of both parents to guarantee the peace and progress of society. So they should be appreciated and honoured," Ewudo-Okoye said.

CrimeNo End To Tiger Base Impunity: A Call To Halt A Dangerous Drift - Nwanguma by Ogemdiozoemenam(op): 7:50am On Apr 16
No End to Tiger Base Impunity: A Call to Halt a Dangerous Drift

By Okechukwu Nwanguma

There is a troubling pattern unfolding in Imo State - one that speaks to a deeper crisis within Nigeria’s law enforcement architecture. The Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Imo State Police Command, notoriously known as “Tiger Base,” has increasingly become synonymous not with protection, but with fear, opacity, and impunity.

The recent arrest of Mr. Uchechukwu Maduakolam and Mr. Kenneth Anyanwu once again brings this disturbing reality into sharp focus. Reports indicate that on April 13, 2026, armed operatives - allegedly from Tiger Base - stormed a village gathering in Umuonyehiele, Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area, opening fire in the process. Mr. Anyanwu was reportedly shot and left bleeding before both men were taken away. Since then, their whereabouts remain unknown. Their families have been plunged into anguish, unable to confirm their safety or access them.

This is not just an isolated incident. It is emblematic of a systemic breakdown - where arrests are carried out with excessive force, detainees are held incommunicado, and due process is treated as optional. In a constitutional democracy, this is unacceptable.

The law is clear. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees the right to life, dignity, and personal liberty. The Administration of Criminal Justice Act sets out procedures for arrest, detention, and trial. Nigeria is also bound by international human rights obligations that prohibit torture and extrajudicial killing. Yet, these safeguards appear routinely disregarded.

If there is credible evidence that Mr. Maduakolam and Mr. Anyanwu have committed any offence, the proper course of action is simple: charge them to court. Justice is not served in the shadows of detention cells or at the barrel of a gun. It is served in open court, where evidence is tested, and rights are protected.

What makes this situation even more alarming is that it reflects a broader culture of fear surrounding Tiger Base. Accounts from victims and families suggest a system where detention is weaponized, and freedom is often negotiated under duress. In a recent account shared with me by a relative of a victim, a young man was reportedly arrested simply because a former schoolmate - allegedly labeled a “suspected cult member” - visited him. No incriminating evidence was found. Yet, his release only came after his father sold property to raise ₦200,000, driven by the fear that his son could be “wasted” if he remained in custody.

This is extortion under the cloak of law enforcement. It is a perversion of justice. And perhaps most dangerously, it is carried out with brazen confidence - officers reportedly taunting victims with the refrain: “nothing will happen.”

When law enforcement agents begin to operate above the law, the very foundation of society is threatened. Public trust erodes. Communities become hostile. And the line between crime control and criminality blurs dangerously.

There is an urgent need for decisive intervention.

The Inspector-General of Police must immediately investigate the operations of Tiger Base and ensure accountability for any violations. The Commissioner of Police in Imo State must act swiftly to establish the whereabouts of the detained individuals and guarantee their safety. Silence or inaction in the face of these allegations only deepens suspicion and emboldens abuse.

Equally, the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, as the Chief Security Officer of the state, cannot afford to look away. The primary duty of government is the protection of lives and property - not the normalization of fear. Imo State must not become a place where citizens dread those sworn to protect them.

Nigeria has walked this path before. The abuses associated with units like SARS sparked nationwide outrage and led to the End SARS protests. Those protests were not merely about a police unit; they were a rejection of impunity. It would be a grave mistake to allow history to repeat itself under a different name.

What is required now is not rhetoric, but action: transparency, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law. The lives of Mr. Maduakolam and Mr. Anyanwu may depend on it. More broadly, the credibility of the justice system - and the safety of countless Nigerians - hangs in the balance.

There must be an end to Tiger Base impunity. And that end must begin now.

Dozie Nwankwo declares intention for Anambra Central Senatorial Seat

By OGEMDI OZOEMENAM, Awka

A topmost Senatorial hopeful on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Hon. Dozie Nwankwo has declared his intention to contest for the Anambra Central Senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 General Election.

He had represented Dunukofia, Njikoka and Anaocha Federal Constituency at the Green Chambers under the same party and now wished to pitch his tent at the Red Chambers of the National Assembly.

On Tuesday, being accompanied by a large crowd of party supporters, Hon Nwankwo stormed APGA state office in Awka to formally declare his intention and picked his expression of interest form to serve the people of Anambra Central Senatorial District.

Speaking with newsmen afterwards, the seasoned lawmaker promised to key into the already existing developmental programmes of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo's administration, and build upon them for the sustained development of the state, particularly Anambra Central Senatorial District.

Hon Nwankwo specially pledged to focus on strengthening security, advancing technology-driven development, and empowering youths and women through targeted programmes and legislative support.

“I am here to consult with my people and my party because I am officially in the race for the Anambra Central Senatorial seat. I have come to inform my party members of my intention to contest and to seek their support.

"I want to key into the vision of our working Governor. Every good policy driven from Abuja down to grassroots, I will support him in the area of security, technology, fighting insecurity with technology, empowerment of the youths and women and most importantly, the policies that have to make us live in peace in Anambra Central.

"I want to partner with the state to support all the good ideas and vision we have for our state," he concluded.###
