stagger: To add to this:
The news commentary had it that at yesterday's trading, banks were just BUYING dollars and were not selling. So there was heavy dollar demand and that is why the interbank rate, which opened at N253 or so, started sliding towards N288 to $1. Bidding was going on and you know how bidding or auction processes go: the price keeps going up so that the highest bidder wins.
Had the CBN not intervened to offer dollars for sale at a rate of N280 to $1, believe you me the US Dollar would have been sold to the entity that was willing to pay N382 to $1 and we would have woken up to see rates at close to N400 to $1.
I tell you, we are yet to see the last of this and I am seriously wondering what the appropriate value of the Naira would be. I don't know if CBN will continue such interventions on a daily basis. Other central banks hardly intervene unless they have to. Bank of Japan has performed 3 interventions in the last 8 years or so.
Something will have to give. It is either the country's economic fundamentals are changed so we can become a net exporter (which means the government has to QUICKLY AND MASSIVELY invest in critical infrastructure like power to boost small scale production and manufacturing for export), or we just watch and allow the Naira to fall to the precipice.
We should look to Venezuela for serious soul-searching. That country produces crude oil like we do, wasted their oil money like we have done and had to devalue their currency. Now inflation is so high, that the people are starving and queuing for food. The situation in Venezuela is now so bad that people are breaking into stores, looting food and provisions and anything they can find to survive. The Venezuelan Army is now guarding retail establishments and escorting food trucks to distribution centres and markets. Critical situation in that country which reminds me of the ESSENCO lines we had in Nigeria in 1984/1985. Guess who was president then?
May we never get to that point ever again. I guess I know the man, lanky ,with an uncanny stretch for economic doom...very sad repeat of unpleasant events. |

why is Apc and Buhari so heartless and stubborn to realize that Nigeria is crashing and need urgent attention, how did we get here.
Everything have changed in a space of a year and some fouls will be here to defend incompetency by this Apc Government & Buhari
Buhari and Apc have succesfully ruined this country in a space of one year. They said PDP destroyed Nigeria for 16 years and it wouldn't take just one year to fix. ..I guess they need a century to get it right. ..zombies. This government doesn't have what it takes to manage this country, they should get out already. |

Mumu. you are just so pathetic, rather than deal with your shallow comment you've engaged in 'spellings* ...smh okay, corrected , *robbed* but deal with your primitive reasoning. even the op admitted he needn't call entire people names cos of few bad eggs and here you are getting worked out. ..I repeat, quote me only when you have received brains! very stupid lady. |

Handsomebeing: I moved with my family less than 6 weeks ago to Warri from Lagos. I have started looking for an apartment in Lagos.
First it was community boys always disturbing my business and have so far paid more than 150,000 to different factions since I started almost 2 months ago.
Secondly, 4 armed boys forced their way into my apartment and robbed me and my family. The most painful part was my wife was almost raped but for intervention by one of the boys who said they should leave immediately to avoid being noticed my neighbors.
I am from Delta state and it is a big shame that I moved to start a business with over 5m instead I have lost more than 35% of it to community boys and robbers.
God help us. I feel your pain but you have no reason calling the entire Niger Delta shame because you were rubbed by some boys in Niger Delta, there's crime everywhere and I don't think it will be right if we call the entire regions names because of few bad eggs. I am a business man too and do not support criminality in any form , I know how it feels to lose money. |

numericalguy: Shame on you and your generation.
A man and his family was robbed and his wife was nearly raped and you are here supporting the perpetrators. You are such evil wicked person. stop being a sadistic idiot in the public. in your very crude mentality, I guess it will be right to call the whole of southwest shame because I was rubbed in the street of Lagos or call the whole of Northeast terrorists because of boko haram . Nobody is justifying criminality, he had no reason calling the entire Niger Delta shame because he got rubbed in warri, a fraction of entire Niger Delta. reflecting the reality of a life he left behind doesn't warrant him insulting entire people from a particular region because few boys from same region rubbed him.lets learn to say things right ...quote me when you receive sense. |

Pavore9: The collabo makes sense, while some Governors are busy wailing over falling monthly allocation from Abuja instead of looking inward to create wealth from resources readily available in their domains. We are getting to know the empty headed ones! every governorship aspirants in Nigeria should be given an entrepreneurial skill test before nominations. ..lol..The matter don red reach! |
Politics › Re: Ambode At The Labana Rice Mill In Kebbi State by ogene70: 10:45am On Jun 05, 2016 |
Teewhy2: Time to move away from oil oil oil. If each state concentrate on an agricultural products that can be best grown in their area, Nigeria will be best for it , also states like Lagos can invest majorly in processing of this products the oil will be second to agricultural. Good initiative to the kebbi state government, if a bag of foreign rice is 20k and the one produce in Nigeria is 11_13k while will I continue to waste the excess cash. GOD bless Nigeria, Nigeria will be great again spot on! I have always said it that those who opposed resource control and true federalism are the real enemies of Nigeria ,because this present arrangement where state Governors just wait for federal allocation will never bring out the best in each state, competition breeds creativity. If other states can begin to partner with one another on comparative advantage basis ,I see us pulling out of this recession faster and stronger than we all expect. Somehow, I'm happy about this windfall in oil price because everyone is thinking of how best they can do away with oil. ..God bless Nigeria! |

EazyMoh: There should be a clear consequence for the marketers to renegade on the agreed terms. The government shall be ready to deal with anybody that is trying to cause another scarcity. After giving what seems to be the final solution Nigerians are not ready for any other story. Oga read well, this government hasn't been sincere in any form. The government agreed to give dollar to the marketers at 285/$ even when the calculations to arrive at N145/liter was done at 300/$. now same government wants the marketers to source $ from black market at 345/$ . If you are an importer you will understand there's a very big difference between 300 and 345 ,enough to send a business packing. This question is this , why will the government make a price estimate at 300/$ and expect the marketers to source $ from black market at 345/$ and still make profit? any sense in that? |
