Politics / Nnamdi Kanu: We Still Await Justice – Nzuko Umunna by Ogirigi: 10:01am On May 01, 2017
An Igbo socio-political pressure group, Nzuko Umunna, has called on the Federal Government to extend the bail granted the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to the other pro-Biafra agitators incarcerated with him.

The group, in a statement jointly issued by the secretary, Paschal Mbanefo, and its Coordinator, Ngozi Odumuko, said it welcomed the “smooth perfection of the bail” granted Kanu despite its stringent condition.

It, however, appealed to the government that bail should also be extended to Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.

The trio had been previously granted bail by the court.

The group commended the efforts of Kanu’s legal team “and all those who have been steadfast and supportive in the call for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu and his colleagues”.

The statement reads, “Nzuko Umunna salutes the timely response of the South East senators Caucus especially Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and also the two others who signed the bail bond for the release of Kanu, Tochukwu Uchendu, Jewish Chief High Priest, Immanuel-El Shalom Oka-Ben Madu. We appreciate the various groups and leaders who showed and have continued to show solidarity to Kanu and others in the course of this trial.”

Nzuko Umunna reiterated its earlier called for the unconditional release of the IPOB leader and his colleagues, insisting that the group would not renege until justice seems to have been done.

The group said, “We wish to reiterate our stand that the rights of Kanu and his colleagues must be respected and that the government should, as a matter of fact, look into the numerous issues that have given rise to the unprecedented upsurge in agitations in the South East part of the country instead of using brutal force to suppress peaceful protests.”

Politics / Why Buhari Must Resign Now – Shehu Sani by Ogirigi: 4:50pm On Apr 29, 2017
The Chairman of the Katsina State Chapter of National Conscience Party, NCP, Abdulmumini Shehu Sani, and a resident of Katsina State has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign and attend to his health issues.

Speaking in the state, Sani said Buhari cannot hold Nigerians to ransom with his health condition as there were other people better positioned to lead Nigeria.

He noted that those playing with the health condition of the President were only bent on destroying the nation and the President himself.
According to Sani, “In whatever situation of life, health matters and you cannot lead without proper health. You cannot be a dictator or mentor without proper and adequate health. And you cannot think and do the right thing without health.

“Let’s look at Nigeria as a whole that comprises over 180 million people, inasmuch as the leader (Buhari) is incapable based on his health status, let us follow the rule of law constitutionally for him to resign.

“His incapacitation cannot take us anywhere. It is better for him to resign. I can call him my father because he was a school mate to my late father, Shehu Sani, at the Government College, Katsina. But the truth is the Nigerian constitution should not be manipulated to favour one person.
“If we want to be fair to ourselves, he should resign, he is not the only one that can lead Nigeria to the right direction. Let him resign and go back to his family so that he can receive proper medications so that he will be free from the burden of tension from Nigerians and recover.”

Sani’s call is coming on the heels of a remark by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina that his principal will not resign and that those asking him to do so, were “merely expressing their opinions”.

Politics / Peter Obi Hails Kanu’s Release, Demands Freedom For Other Agitators by Ogirigi: 2:44pm On Apr 29, 2017
Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has described the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as a welcome development.

Kanu, who was detained for over 18 months, was set free from Kuje Prison, Abuja on Friday evening after meeting the conditions for the bail granted him on Tuesday by a Federal High Court, Abuja, presided over by Justice Binta Nyako.

“I am happy that the Federal Government this time listened to the voice of reason. I congratulate Kanu on his release and wish to commend all those who played one role or the other to ensure that he met his tough bail conditions and was actually released,” Obi said in a statement issued on Friday night by his Media Office.

The former governor, however, expressed displeasure that the other Biafra activists detained with Nnamdi Kanu, continue to languish in prison custody.

“I wish to appeal to the Judiciary and the Federal Government to equally consider the other Biafra detainees for bail and release since, to the best of my knowledge, they have never resorted to violence in their agitation,” he said.

Obi noted that while the release of Kanu will help to calm frayed nerves, tension will likely remain high in the South East and South South geopolitical zones in view of the continued detention of other Biafra activists.

“As I counseled previously, the Federal Government should engage the Biafra agitators in dialogue. Every agitation in the world is resolved through dialogue,” Obi said.

Nairaland / General / Covenant University Suspends Students For Missing Easter Programme by Ogirigi: 2:56pm On Apr 27, 2017
The parents and students at the Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, have described as ‘unjust’ the suspension of undergraduates at the institution for not attending its Easter Youth Alive programme, Punch Metro reports.
According to them, the rules of their admission did not say it is compulsory for them to attend the programme organised by the faith-based institution.

A 400-level student told our correspondent on Wednesday that over 200 students were affected by the decision of the university.

He said, “We were going for the services in the morning and night and people were getting tired of them because we were also preparing for exams. So, the Vice-Chancellor got angry and ordered that those who missed the services be sanctioned.

“Some were suspended for four weeks and those who had missed eight services for the four days got a year.”

Another 300-level student said some of them had been prevented from sitting for exams and they had no means of protesting the sanction which he said was ‘unfair’.

“The mood in the school is really tense. Though students are not protesting, they are angry because you are preparing for an exam you’re not sure you will sit for it until the paper starts.

“They stopped me from sitting for a paper last week because I did not go for a service and I don’t know if I will be allowed in today either.”

A concerned parent, who took to a social media platform to register her displeasure, said the punishment, especially, for final year students was not commensurate with the offences committed.

She said the university’s management should consider the impact of their decisions on the future of the students, in addition to the financial consequences of an extra year on parents in a recession.

“Is there no better punishment to give to these students than suspension for a year? What culture are you trying to imbibe into them? When they are suspended, will they go home and become better people? What are the lecturers and counsellors in the school for? What are the various Bible studies or programmes in the school for?

“These students have barely two or three months before project defence and graduation, (they) have exams coming up and the school wakes up and decides to suspend them for a year? And what happens to the fees paid for the year? In this economic recession, parents should cough out close to a million naira again to pay fees?

“Are these programmes organised for just believers? Who did the church come for? Who did Jesus come for? Isn’t it the sinners? What if after every sin we commit, our Almighty Father in Heaven decides to suspend us from this Earth, where will we all be?”

However, another student in the institution told Punch Metro, that contrary to the news making the rounds, her mates were suspended for leaving the school’s premises without permission during the Easter programme.

According to her, some students who were caught in their hostels during the youth programme also failed the drug tests often conducted on undergraduates in the university.

She said, “It’s not just that they didn’t attend the programme, some failed the drug test while some went out without permission. It’s in the rules and we all know it, the reason why people are angry is that final year students will have an extra year.

The institution’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Emmanuel Igban, said the university was well within its right to have taken the decision.

He said the students were also aware of the fact that church services were compulsory.

“Depending on the gravity of the offence, students are aware of the rule as contained in the student handbook which they signed to abide with. Chapel attendance is mandatory for all students. A student is expected to attend chapel; either the Tuesday or Thursday Chapel service and all other programmes as directed by the chaplaincy and university management.

“Provision is made for signing of attendance and students are expected to be on their seats at least 15 minutes prior to service. Excuse from chapel requires permission from the office of the Dean of Student Affairs.

“Absence from chapel and Sunday services and other university Assembly (services) attract penalty ranging from letter of warning, suspension to advice to withdraw.”

Politics / Civil Societies Fault Nnamdi Kanu’s Bail Conditions by Ogirigi: 11:48am On Apr 27, 2017
A coalition of civil society groups, yesterday, faulted the bail conditions granted the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, stating that they amount to denial of bail.

The group, in a statement in Abuja, argued that it was imperative that these bail conditions be varied or in the alternative, Kanu should be freed unconditionally to attend to his health, adding that this would be in the overall interest of the criminal justice system and the reputation of Nigeria as a democratic society.

The statement was signed by Mr. Eze Onyekpere, Centre for Social Justice; Mr. Sam Amadi; Mr. Benedict Ezeagu, Save Nigeria Group; Princewill Akpakpan, Lawyers of Conscience; Mr. Okere Nnamdi, Kingdom Human Rights Foundation; and Mr. Ibuchukwu Ezike, Civil Liberties Organisation.

Others are: Chris Nwadigo, Peoples Rights Organisation; Dede Uzor, Campaign for Democracy; and Matthew Edaghese, Access to Rights Initiative.

According to them, the court was reported to have stated that the only reason why Kanu is being allowed to go on bail was because of ill health; and wondered why the same court make it impossible for the bail to be enjoyed.

They said: “While we admit that the exercise of discretion and the conditions attached to bail may vary from case to case, it must be situated within the context of constitutionalism, legality, the facts of the case and follow judicial precedent.”

The group noted that the excessive and very stringent bail conditions amounted to denial of bail, stating that the first condition that Kanu must not be in a crowd of more than 10 persons is an impossible condition to fulfill.

According to them, the implication is that he can no longer go to a church or a place of worship, market place, restaurant, among others, adding that he will violate this condition if his immediate nuclear and extended families who will welcome him number more than ten.

“This will likely happen as he is stepping out of the prison yard. Pray, what purpose does this condition serve?” the group wondered.

They further stated that asking for a surety who is a senior and highly placed Igbo person such as a senator begs the question, why they queried the rationale for a surety of Igbo ethnic nationality?

They said, “Under what law or which section of the constitution did the judge derive the authorisation for this? When did the ethnic origin of an accused person or surety become relevant for the accused being admitted to bail? Thus, in the event Mr. Kanu finds Nigerians that are not of Igbo ethnic extraction as sureties, they would therefore not qualify.

“And if Mr. Kanu cannot get a senator to stand surety for him, he will not be allowed to go and attend to his health? How many senators, in these days of the anti-corruption drive will agree to post a bail bond for N100 million without making themselves vulnerable to being pulled over by the anti-corruption agencies?

“It therefore seems that in restricting one of the sureties to be a senator of Igbo ethnic nationality, Mr. Kanu has contrary to section 42 (1) (a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), been subjected in the practical application of the law to disabilities and restrictions to which citizens of Nigeria of other communities, ethnic groups and places of origin are not made subject to. There is no precedent for this aspect of the ruling.”

Continuing, the group said, “The condition that a prominent Jewish leader should be the second surety is very far-fetched. The fact that Mr. Kanu claimed that Judaism is his religion cannot be the justification for asking him to present a non Nigerian to stand as his surety. Thus, Mr. Kanu needs a person of Jewish nationality to free him to attend to his health! We are not convinced that this condition is permissible under our Constitution and laws. Imagine Mr. Kanu meets this demand and there is a default, how can the court get access to the surety if he travels back to his country?

“To ask Mr. Kanu not to address rallies or grant media interviews is an extreme measure which apparently serves no purpose. This is a violation of fundamental human rights entrenched in Chapter Four of the Constitution. Even while in detention, he has not been restricted from having contact with the media.”

Politics / Leadership Failure, Bane Of Nigeria’s Progress, Growth – Gowon by Ogirigi: 10:14am On Apr 26, 2017

Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon and other northern leaders, have identified leadership failure at all levels as the bane of Nigeria’s progress and growth.

They said that if the nation would make progress, there is need for the present leaders in the country to shun ethnicity, corruption and religious bigotry.

The Arewa leaders, including former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, Justice Mamman Nasir (rtd), Malam Adamu Fika, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau and Rear Admiral Murtala Nyako (rtd), who gathered at a summit organised by Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation at the Sardauna Memorial Hall yesterday, x-rayed the problem of insecurity, economic decay and lack of good governance that continued to trail Nigeria.

Gowon, represented by former Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Malam Adamu Fika, said: “Poor leadership led to pervading poverty, lack of education, poor health services, lack of justice and heightened ethno-religious friction.”

“No matter the resources available to a government, if the leadership discipline and commitment to accountability and services is lacking, no meaningful social or economic transformation can take place.”

Besides, elder statesman, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Sule also admonished the nation’s leaders over the present economic woes of Nigeria, saying that they must imbibe the legacies of the First Republican leaders like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Tafawa Balewa and others if they would transform the country.

Also, Minister of Interior, Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd), who represented President Muhammadu Buhari at the occasion, urged Nigerians to exhibit the spirit of patriotism to national course. He said that the present administration was moving the nation out of economic, social and political hopelessness.

Politics / Save Our People – Tivs In Diaspora Beg Buhari by Ogirigi: 6:29pm On Apr 24, 2017
The Tiv Diaspora Forum, an umbrella of of Tiv sons and daughters resident overseas have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to end the senseless killings of their kinsmen by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
In a statement jointly signed by Prof. Joseph T. Zume (USA), Engr. Lord M. Uva and Son Kai Gyoh, the group noted that they were particularly worried by the incessant attacks on Benue communities by this armed herders.

The group noted that if the government does not tackle the herdsmen problem, Nigeria could well be sitting on a time bomb with the potential for a catastrophic regional humanitarian crisis.

It pointed out that the herdsmen situation is bound to result to a proliferation of arms among communities with dangerous and long term consequences.

“As patriotic Nigerians, we feel a sense of duty to advise the Buhari government as a matter of national security, disarm the criminal herdsmen and their accomplices.

“In the short term, deploy appropriate and adequate security personnel to affected communities with clear mandates to secure and protect the local communities. Address with urgency, the humanitarian crisis that has been created by the invasion and destruction of communities in the Benue valley, including those of the Tiv in Taraba, Nasarawa and Benue States, that have been the greatest victims of herdsmen atrocities,’ It stated.

Foreign Affairs / Over 100 Killed, Wounded In Taliban Attack In Afghanistan by Ogirigi: 1:50am On Apr 23, 2017
More than 100 Afghan soldiers were killed and wounded in a coordinated Taliban attack on an army base in northern Afghanistan, the country’s defence ministry said Saturday.
Two of the attackers blew themselves up and seven were killed in the assault near Mazar-i-Sharif city on Friday which lasted several hours and targeted soldiers at a mosque and dining facility.

“The majority of our soldiers were offering Friday prayers” at the time of the assault, the ministry said in a statement, adding that “over 100 Afghan army forces were martyred and wounded”.

The government toll of the attack came as a military official who was at the base at the time of the assault told a reporter that “150 soldiers were killed and dozens wounded”.

“They were young recruits who had come for training,” he said on condition of anonymity.

A US military spokesman said earlier that “more than 50” Afghan soldiers were killed in the attack claimed by the Taliban, while Afghan officials had initially put the death toll at eight with 11 wounded.

The latest deadly assault against an Afghan military site underscores rising insecurity in the war-torn country as it braces for an intense fighting season in the spring.

The facility in Balkh province is home to the Afghan army’s 209th Corps. The last major attack against a military site was in early March when gunmen disguised as doctors stormed the Sardar Daud Khan hospital – the country’s largest military hospital – in Kabul, killing dozens.

Crime / Two Men Caught With $90,000 Stolen Cash In Underwear by Ogirigi: 1:38am On Apr 23, 2017
Two Georgian men were busted in a Myanmar airport with $90,000 of stolen cash hidden in their underwear which they had swiped from a local money changer, police said Saturday.

Officers said the middle-aged men, identified as Janjgava Revas, 64, and Narmania Malkhaz, 51, had made off with the money from a currency exchange office on Friday in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city.

“They were found at the Yangon airport with the $90,000 in their underwear,” said a statement posted on Yangon police’s official Facebook page.

“They will have to face trial,” an officer said on Saturday, adding that the men were being held in the city’s main prison.

The duo allegedly duped the money changer into giving them the $90,000 before they had handed over the equivalent amount in Myanmar kyat.

“They told me they would come back with the Myanmar kyat,” Zaw Win, the owner of the exchange office, told a news reporter.

He said the Georgians, who were in Myanmar on tourist visas, left behind a case that they claimed contained the US dollars he had doled out for them and promising to return shortly.

But when he opened the case 10 minutes later Zaw Win realized the men had taken off with most of the money — the stacks of cash left inside the case were mostly one dollar bills.

Nigeria, through it foremost anti-graft body – Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has also been engaging in the recovery of hard currencies being stashed away by corrupt officials.

Crime / FULL STORY: Herbalist Collects N400k, And Killed Client by Ogirigi: 1:28am On Apr 23, 2017
The quest of a 40-year-old vulcaniser, Oderinde Sunday, to be rich through money ritual ended tragically for him, as the herbalist he consulted allegedly killed him and dumped his body on the road side after collecting N400,000 from him in Osogbo, Osun State.
But the suspected killer, 34-year-old Saheed Adekunle, resident in 24 Alaperin street, Sabo area, Osogbo, had no hiding place, as the Osun State Police Command uncovered the tracks he thought he had perfectly covered and arrested him.

According to information gathered by Saturday Tribune, the police’s attention was drawn to a ‘Ghana-must-go’ bag dumped on a street on Wednesday, March 8. On opening the bag, an unidentified man was found dead and squeezed inside.

The Suspect
On March 9, a man, discovered to be a brother to Sunday, reported at a police station that his brother had been killed by Adekunle, prompting the police to go after the suspect.

Saturday Tribune learnt that the deceased had approached Adekunle, a tailor and herbs seller, to help him prepare a charm that would make him wealthy.

To achieve his goal, the deceased reportedly sold his piece of land with an uncompleted building on it for N400,000, which he gave to Adekunle to prepare the said charm. But Adekunle was said to have reneged on his promise, which resulted in a fight between him and the deceased.

In the ensuing fight, Adekunle allegedly picked up a big stone while the deceased had his back turned to him, and smashed it on his head. Not done with his bleeding client, the suspect was said to have taken a cable, with which he strangled Sunday until life was snuffed out of him.

It was after that that he was said to have put Sunday’s remains in a big bag and dumped it on Ibokun Road at OSBC area of the town.

Though Adekunle’s neighbours suspected a foul play when they saw him riding away with a bag dripping blood, their efforts to make him disclose the content on his return failed, as he insisted that the bag contained the remains of an animal he used for sacrifice. Though they descended on him and almost lynched him, he refused to confess his deed, until he was arrested by the police, Saturday Tribune learnt.

In an interview with Saturday Tribune after his arrest, the suspect confessed that he killed the vulcaniser, saying that his action was to stop him from continuing to ask for his money that he collected.

“I prepare herbal concoctions and I travel to states to sell to clients. I learnt tailoring as a vocation.

“A vulcaniser, Sunday, came to me in December 2016 and told me that he wanted me to help him do charm to make him wealthy. I advised him to do something that would boost his business, but he insisted on money-making charm. So I told him that there was no problem, asking him to bring money to carry out the process. I didn’t know how to do such a charm; I only wanted to deceive him.

“Sunday told me that he had a piece of land that he would sell. After he sold the land, he brought N400,000 to me on Monday, March 6 and also came with someone, insisting that I signed a paper to indicate that I collected money from him.

“Two days after, on Wednesday, March 8, Sunday picked a quarrel with me that I had not prepared the charm. I said I would give him a charm to boost his business, but he did not agree. By then, I had already spent part of the money.

“We started fighting and I stepped outside my room, picked a heavy stone and hit Sunday on the head with it. He was backing me so he didn’t see me with the stone. He fell down, covered in his blood. I picked a wire and strangled him on the neck, after which I put his body in a big ‘Ghana-must-go’ bag that I had at home.
