Politics / Why Nigerian Governments Must Pay Attention To Wildlife —dr Morenikeji by ogunwale321: 10:48am On Jun 19, 2018
The Nigerian Association of Zoological Gardens and Wildlife Parks (NAZAP) was inaugurated in October 2015, and registered with the Federal Government in November 2017, with the motto, “Biodiversity, Conservation, and Stewardship”. Its Governing Council had their third meeting
recently. Rising from the meeting, NAZAP President, Dr. Olajumoke Morenikeji, an associate professor of Parasitology/ Ecology and Environmental Biology Unit of Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan, told PAUL OMOROGBE why the association wants the government to revitalise Nigeria’s wildlife.

We don’t even take care of our national parks, not to talk of zoos. I had the privilege of speaking to the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed because I was invited to a tourism summit in Abuja, and they were discussing ways of making the economy do well through tourism. When I stood up to speak about zoos, everyone kept quiet because it had always been about hotels and those kinds of places.
But I said zoos are the most visited places on earth, anywhere you go. So, we have to do something about the zoos and parks sector to bring money to the country. I told him there is a need to have a zoo in every state. It will not just benefit those working there, by creating jobs, it will also benefit the locals around and the country, because there are some animals in Nigeria we don’t have anywhere else in the world. People will travel to see them. When they see that the sector is well managed, they will come.

Politics / MKO Abiola: Proceed To Restructure Nigeria, Cecilia Ibru Urges Buhari by ogunwale321: 9:47am On Jun 14, 2018
Sapele —Co-founder of Michael and Cecilia Ibru University Agbarha-Otor, Delta State, Dr Cecilia Ibru, has expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari on the national honour he recently bestowed on the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola, among others.
She, however, called on President Buhari to proceed to restructure the country as well.

She said: “The restructuring of the country is very paramount. It is as important, if not more, as bestowing the highest national honour in the land on the presumed winner of the freest and fairest election ever held in the country.

“The present day constitution is still bestriding on the constitution handed to us by the military. In order to address the lingering issues challenging and affecting the country today, there has to be restructuring.

“The country is overdue for restructuring. We cannot be in the midst of plenty yet lack the basic things of life. It is unfair and ungodly, particularly in the South-South, which deserves recognition and which should have a fair share of the national cake.

Politics / President Buhari Signs 2018 Budget Wednesday by ogunwale321: 10:02am On Jun 13, 2018
Barring any last-minute change, President MuhammaduBuhari will Wednesday sign the 2018 Appropriation Bill into law, THISDAY learnt Tuesday.
In fact, but for the June 12 activities, including the investiture of late Chief Moshood Abiola, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe and late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, the president would have signed the bill Tuesday, to bring to a close several months of delay in the promulgation of the
nation's financial estimates, an impeccable presidency official told THISDAY.

The president had last November laid the 2018 Appropriation Bill before a joint session of the National Assembly. However, it was not until May 16 (six months after), that the National Assembly passed the bill. Afterward, it took them another 10 days to transmit it to the president.

Politics / June 12: Agbakoba Reveals Why Buhari Honoured Abiola, Carpets Obasanjo, IBB by ogunwale321: 9:44am On Jun 13, 2018
Co-Chairman of Nigerian Intervention Movement (NIM), Olisa Agbakoba has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has won some hearts by declaring June 12 as Democracy Day.
The former President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), however, said the move was a political strategy ahead of the 2019 election.
He said this on Tuesday at the silver jubilee of June 12 organized by NIM with June 12 Movement at MKO Abiola Crescent.

According to him, the President was trying to court the human rights community and the Yoruba.

But Agbakoba stressed that Buhari deserves commendation, saying former President, Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Military Head of State, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, IBB, failed to honour Abiola and others.

As Nigeria marks June 12 as Democracy Day for the first time on Tuesday, the Campaign for Democracy (CD) has said that the declaration of the day as democracy day by President Muhammed Buhari “has rekindled the Hope 1993 spirit”. The CD also said the declaration was “victory for all Nigerians and not just for those who voted for MKO Abiola”. In a statement to mark June 12 as Democracy Day in Minna on Tuesday, the state chapter of the organisation said: “The courage and determination of Mr President to recognise Chief MKO Abiola’s electoral victory is one final attempt at resolving the injuries caused by the annulment of June 12, 1993 presidential election.”
The statement jointly signed by Alhaji Abdullahi Jabi, state Chairman and Abdulwahid Adeniran, Secretary, said the president’s action “must be acknowledged by right thinking Nigerians in the spirit of healings of wounds, confidence building in the people, and reducing the socio-economic and political tension in the country.

A former Nigerian governor has told RFI that he will run in next year's presidential election regardless of the unwritten rules which see the presidency alternate between northern and southern candidates.
Donald Duke, the ex-governor of Cross River state, joins a growing list of potential challengers to President Muhammadu Buhari. Since civilian rule was restored in 1999, Nigeria has rotated the presidency between Muslims and Christians in a process called ‘zoning’.
