Nairaland / General / See A Jet That Speed Off And Crashed Into A Fence by ogunwale321: 11:07am On Sep 28, 2018
Two people have died and two have been seriously injured after a private jet sped off runway in South Carolina airport and crashed into a fence.

The private jet landed at 1.40pm on Thursday at the Greenville Downtown Airport, but instead of coming to a stop it ran off the runway and crashed into a fence, breaking the aircraft into two.

The Greenville Police Department says there were four people on board, three men and one woman. Two were pilots and the two passengers were a married couple.

Greenville City Fire spokesman Tristan Johnson confirmed that the two people who died in the crash were the pilot and the co-pilot of the plane, according to WSPA.

The passengers are in the hospital in critical condition. The victims are yet to be named.

Police spokesman Donnie Porter announced after the crash:

For some reason, we're not sure why, [the plane] was not able to stop, went off the end of the runway, and crossed to the grass on the runway, that's about another 200 feet, then down an embankment and finally came to rest at the airport road.

I believe that one of the pilots, not sure which, was either temporarily unconscious or what not but was leaning on the throttle.

Police spokesman Porter said that this was the biggest accident the airport has seen in a long time.

By Thursday evening the FAA was en route to take over the investigation.

Politics / Davido As A Strong Youth Mobilizer Over Osun Election-nollywood Actress Ireti by ogunwale321: 12:30pm On Sep 25, 2018
Nollywood actress, Iretiola Doyle has spoken on Davido’s active involvement in the politics of Osun state in the past few weeks.
Davido, whose uncle is the standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the yet to be concluded governorship election in the state, has been a strong youth mobiliser for the opposition party.

However, Mrs Doyle said if Nigerians had demonstrated a similar passion and fervour in politics as Davido, the nation would have escaped the political and socio-economic doldrums it has found itself in present times.

She went further to urge Nigerians to get their PVC and aggressively support the candidate of their choice during the 2019 elections.

Sharing a photo of Davido on Instagram, the actress wrote on her Instagram handle: “Who he’s campaigning for and why is immaterial and beside the point.

“The way I see it, if a quarter of us got involved and pursued our political preferences with as much passion, single-mindedness, loyalty, doggedness and “we die here” fervour that @davidoofficial has displayed and sustained over the last several days, it’s safe to say that the last 2 decades probably wouldn’t have gone down the way they have and we probably wouldn’t be in the current socio-political situation we are in.

“It doesn’t matter how cerebral or articulate you are; backseat driving and armchair political analysis don’t change a thing.

“Everyone is analysing what A, B, C and D are doing, the real question is what are you doing? How are you getting involved? What is your political preference and how are you ensuring that you are effectively represented?

“Alas, classic Nigerianese, you no go do, person wey gree do will be damned for doing… Na so!

“Davido has found his “why”. I am PVC ready currently on the lookout for my “why”. A candidate whose politics I agree with, who I feel I can trust.”

Politics / Defection: Akwa Ibom PDP Assures Decampees Of Equal Opportunity by ogunwale321: 12:08pm On Sep 03, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has allayed fears that those who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the party would be relegated to the background, reassuring that all party members would be given equal opportunity and a level-playing ground.

Speaking through its Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, in an interaction with journalists in Uyo over the weekend, PDP said it has put in place a solid structure so that no member would be marginalised.

According to Ememobong, “When people leave the PDP, it’s defection, when they return it’s home coming. So when people come back home, it’s easy to locate their rooms.”

On the position of the party on zoning, the Publicity Secretary said that zoning has become sacrosanct in the party because such would reduce political tension and unnecessary expenditure during the 2019 general elections.

He also said the widespread sensitization on zoning has readjusted the mindset of politicians in the state to avoid undue conflicts, adding that the ongoing purchase of nomination forms by members of the party was an indication of respect to the zoning arrangement.

The party spokesman said such peaceful move runs in contrast with other political parties that were allegedly chanting war songs, with the threat to win through violence.

He said as a party determined to win the support of the people through hard work and prove of competence, the PDP, instead of threat and intimidation, has held stakeholders’ meetings in the 329 wards across the state and carried out sensitization in the 10 federal constituencies.

Ememobong said the PDP is currently running over five radio programs, using such platforms to sensitize and give seed funds to aid small and medium scale business owners, in addition to training in various trades and vocations.

“We have been holding series of meetings to prepare the ground to ensure a free, fair, peaceful and credible elections. In the area of touching lives, we are currently running 4-5 programs on radio, sensitising and giving out monies for people to start small businesses, we give out as much as N250-500,000.

“It’s difficult for a person who is benefiting from you not to insist you stay. We are interacting with young professionals, market people, we are carrying out door to door campaigns, we are praying, the governor before declaring went first to God, this government has been made a part of the church. We have done that part that man needed to do. That is why the campaign slogan of the governor for 2019 is ‘Only God’,” he said

“People come into politics without preparing that the answer can either be yes or no, that’s why we keep asking those not favoured by zoning to avoid spending money, some aspirants do not even know how to interact with the electorates. That is why we keep sensitizing our members to avoid this.”

While expressing confidence that the PDP has worked harder than any other political party in the state and therefore stands a huge chance of sweeping the polls, the party spokesperson said,
“PDP secretariat has been a beehive of activities within these past weeks, lots of people have indicated interest and actually purchased the forms, our forms are the most reasonable in the political market. For women, it’s just the expression of interest, the nomination form is free, only the incumbent has purchased form for governorship

“PDP is the only political party in this country to attain the age of 20, it was created as a platform where everyone, irrespective of religious or any affiliation can thrive. In the past 20 years, we have provided the fertile ground for democracy to thrive, I’m sure that if the type of party we have at the centre today had been for the past 20 years, there wouldn’t have been democracy. That’s our greatest achievement.”

It gathered that among those who lost their lives were a food vendor, Halirat Akintobi, and her two sons. A close relative disclosed that the deceased had a shop at Ilawo, near Kobiti Central Mosque in the Abeokuta North Local Government Area, where she had gone for the day’s business with her children when the flood hit the area.

They were said to have taken shelter inside the container when the flood caused the havoc and swept away the mother and her two children identified as Abeeden and Shuaib.

Apart from the trio who had since been buried, eight other corpses, also victims of the devastating flood, were said to have been deposited at the mortuary of the General Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta. Seven days after, the impact of the incident is still being felt by members of the families who lost either their property or relatives. Many of them were still shocked and could not express their feelings.
When Vanguard visited the affected areas, it was discovered that some families were still searching for their family members by visiting the different morgues in Abeokuta.

Crime / Rapes And Beatings: The Torments Of South Korea’s Young Athletes by ogunwale321: 1:32pm On Jul 19, 2018
When Kim Eun-hee was 10 years old, a primary school child with dreams of tennis stardom, her coach raped her for the first time. Then he did it again. And again. And again. The would-be South Korean champion was too young to even know what sex was. But she knew she dreaded the repeated orders to come to his room at their training camp, the pain and the humiliation. “It took me years to realise that it was rape,” Kim told AFP, adding: “He kept raping me for two years… he told me it was a secret to be kept between him and me.”
Now 27, Kim spoke to international media for the first time and waived all rights to anonymity to reveal how female athletes in the South have silently suffered sexual abuse by their coaches.

South Korea is perhaps best known for its technological prowess and K-pop stars, but is also a regional sporting power and besides Japan is the only Asian country to have hosted both summer and winter Olympics.

Despite its relatively small size and population, South Korea is regularly in the top 10 medal table places at both Games, and is globally dominant in archery, taekwondo and short-track speed skating, while packing the top positions in world women’s golf rankings.
But it remains hierarchical and patriarchal in many respects, including a close-knit, male-dominated sports establishment — where personal connections can be almost as important as performances in forging a successful career.

In a highly competitive society where winning is everything, many young athletes forego schooling or live away from families to train with their peers and coaches full-time, living in a dorm-like environment for years.

The training camp system — akin to models used by Communist sporting machines such as China — is credited with helping the South punch well above its weight on the global sporting stage.

But it has proven to be the setting for abuse in several sports — especially of underage athletes whose existence is controlled by their trainers. “The coach was the king of my world, dictating everything about my daily life from how to exercise to when to sleep and what to eat,” said Kim, adding that he beat her repeatedly as part of “training”. The coach was eventually dismissed after some parents complained of his “suspicious behaviour”, but was simply moved to another school with no criminal inquiry.

Crime / Boko Haram Kills Six Traders In Nigeria Ambush by ogunwale321: 1:19pm On Jul 19, 2018
Boko Haram fighters killed six traders when they ambushed a convoy of lorries under military escort in northeast Nigeria, a civilian militia member and a local resident said on Thursday.

“Six traders were killed in an ambush by Boko Haram gunmen on Tuesday,” said Umar Kachalla, from the volunteer security force in Gamboru, a trading hub on Nigeria’s border with Cameroon. The attack happened at about 6:00 pm (1700 GMT) at Mussini village, some 16 kilometres (10 miles) from Gamboru.
Kachalla said the gunmen opened fire on the 23-strong convoy, forcing it to stop, then looted supplies and torched the vehicles.
“The poor state of the road makes it difficult for motorists to escape any ambush because they need to manoeuvre through deep and gaping potholes,” he added.

Abubakar Yusuf, from Gamboru, passed the scene on Thursday morning. “I can see the trucks lined up. They are all burnt. Nothing remains but heaps of ash from the goods,” he said. “It is true. Six people were killed in the ambush, including five men and one woman. Attacks against traders have become frequent despite the military escorts.”

AFP asked for confirmation and comment from Nigerian Army spokesman Brigadier General Texas Chukwu. In a text message, he said only: “Is not true.” Further questions about whether he meant the attack itself or the numbers involved went unanswered.
Nigeria’s government and military maintains that Boko Haram, whose insurgency has killed at least 20,000 people since 2009, is a spent force and on the verge of defeat.

It is now encouraging thousands of people displaced by the conflict to return to their homes from makeshift camps in the Borno state capital, Maiduguri.

But international aid agencies working in the remote region say conditions are not right for mass returns, particularly in terms of security. Despite claims of free movement, civilian vehicles still require military escorts on roads into and out of
Maiduguri because of fears of Boko Haram attacks. Last weekend, jihadists ambushed troops in the Bama area of Borno and separately overran a military base in neighbouring Yobe.
But the military rejected reports that dozens of troops were killed and told local people “their safety is guaranteed”, despite repeated attacks, raids and suicide bombings. In June, 43 people, including the recently returned displaced, were killed in a wave of suicide attacks in the town of Damboa.
