According to the lawyer, the post, titled “Is the Local Content Committee of the Senate Natasha’s Birthright?” included a statement suggesting that Akpoti-Uduaghan believed being a lawmaker was only about “pancaking her face and wearing transparent outfits to the chambers.” In a suit, marked CV/737/25, filed before the Federal Capital Territory High Court on 25 February 2025, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has accused the Senate President of defamation and filed a N100.3 billion in damages. The suit was a fallout of the clash between Akpabio and the female Kogi lawmaker last week over the relocation of her seat. Others joined as defendants in the suit are the Federal Republic of Nigeria; and the Senior Legislative Aide to the Senate President, Mfon Patrick. Akpoti-Uduaghan, through her lawyer, Victor Giwa, alleged that defamatory statements were made by the Senate President and published by his aide on Facebook. According to the lawyer, the post, titled “Is the Local Content Committee of the Senate Natasha’s Birthright?” included a statement suggesting that Akpoti-Uduaghan believed being a lawmaker was only about “pancaking her face and wearing transparent outfits to the chambers.” Giwa argued that the statement was defamatory, provocative, and disparaging, lowering his client’s dignity in the eyes of her colleagues and the public. The Kogi lawmaker is, therefore, seeking, among others, “a declaration that the words, ‘It is bottled anger by the Kogi lawmaker, who knows nothing about legislative rules. She thinks being a lawmaker is all about pancaking her face and wearing transparent outfits to the chambers,’ used and written by the third defendant at the prompting of the first and second defendants, is defamatory and intended to cause public opprobrium and disaffection toward the claimant.” She also urged the court to restrain the defendants and their associates from making further defamatory statements against her on any platform. However, the Senate spokesman, Senator Adaramodu, said Akpoti-Uduaghan would end up nowhere because “the parliament enjoys absolute privilege.”

The Federal Capital Territory High Court, sitting in Kuje, on Thursday adjourned to February 3, 2025, the arraignment of former Executive Secretary of National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, Professor Usman Yusuf. Recall that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had on Wednesday arrested Yusuf and brought him before the court on Thursday for arraignment on allegations of fraud. A statement by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said the arraignment was, however, moved to Monday to allow for amendment of the charges. The defence counsel, Isah Dokto Haruna, who held brief for the lead defence counsel, O.I.Habeeb, SAN, made an application for bail. The court turned down the application on account of the defendant’s deferred arraignment. Justice Chinyere E. Nwecheonwu adjourned the matter till February 3, 2025, for arraignment and ruled that the defendant be remanded in the custody of the Commission. Yusuf’s arrest and prosecution followed a petition submitted to the Federal Government during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, over alleged misconduct and fraudulent practices. It was gathered that Yusuf was relieved of his appointment in 2019 by Buhari, seven months after he was recommended for dismissal by a fact-finding panel set up by the Federal Ministry of Health over alleged mismanagement of N919 million. |
A fight has broken out at the headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where a meeting of the party’s board of trustees (BoT) is taking place. The fight started when Sunday Ude-Okoye, a party chieftain, was denied access to the meeting. The PDP has been embroiled in a fresh leadership crisis as both Samuel Anyanwu and Ude-Okoye lay claim to the position of the national secretary. In December 2024, the court of appeal ruled that Ude-Okoye should replace Anyanwu as the PDP national secretary. Anyanwu had however obtained several court injunctions preventing his removal from office. Anyanwu appealed the judgment affirming his removal and also filed for a stay of execution at the supreme court same day the appeal court delivered the verdict in favour of Ude-Okoye. On Wednesday, Anyanwu was present at the commencement of the meeting while Ude-Okoye arrived some minutes later, but was prevented from attending the meeting. Ude-Okoye attempted to force his way in but was firmly blocked by Emmanuel Okoronkwo, a party protocol officer and Anyanwu’s aide. His supporters then scaled the fence into the secretariat premises, overpowered Okoronkwo and others who had blocked Ude-Okoye from entering the meeting hall. Security personnel initially struggled to maintain order at the party’s secretariat. Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the BoT, and Umar Damagum, PDP chairman, are among the party members attending the meeting. Ude-Okoye is currently outside the BoT meeting hall with his supporters... Ignatius Uduk, the defendant in three-count charges bordering on the announcement of false election results, publication of false election results, and perjury, was absent in court along with his counsel. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had preferred the charges against Uduk. Despite being summoned, Uduk and his counsel failed to appear in court for the judgment. The Judge, Bassey Nkanang, adjourned the judgment till 11 am and directed that a call be made to the defendant and counsel to inform them of the judgment. However, they failed to appear in court. This was not the first time Uduk and his counsel had missed a court sitting, as he, the defendant, has refused to appear in the past six sittings. Judge Nkanang revoked Uduk’s bail conditions and issued an arrest warrant. The judgment was then adjourned until... |

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, has said the problem of poor leadership in the country has its roots in the leadership recruitment process, stressing that a surfeit of delegates who elect candidates in the political parties are illiterate. El-Rufai made the assertion yesterday in Abuja while speaking with journalists at the end of a two-day national conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria, organised by Centre LSD And Partners. He said he had no intention of leaving the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), contrary to recent reports. The former governor said he was only being hard on his party because he wanted it to change. On January 8, el-Rufai had met behind closed doors with the leadership of Social Democratic Party (SDP) at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. At the meeting were former Chief Security Officer to the late Gen. Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (rtd), and Atiku’s former spokesman, Segun Showunmi, among others. Showunmi had in a post on his verified Facebook page described the meeting as a “strategic gathering” convened by SDP chairman, Shehu Gabam, to evaluate the state of opposition politics in Nigeria. The move was, however, widely seen as part of ongoing plans to form a formidable coalition capable of defeating APC and President Bola Tinubu in 2027. But el-Rufai said yesterday, “I am not leaving the APC. I don’t have such plans.” However, he lamented the lack of... |

President Trump signed multiple executive orders Monday night that could reshape the management and composition of the military, with provisions addressing diversity measures, transgender service members, and troops who were discharged for refusing COVID vaccinations. He also signed an executive order to establish a process to develop what the administration is calling an American Iron Dome — a missile defense shield for the homeland. (Iron Dome is the name often used for Israel’s system for intercepting rockets, which was developed with U.S. support.) Mr. Trump signed the four orders aboard Air Force One as he flew back to Washington from a stop in Florida. One of the orders would reinstate members of the military who were discharged for refusing to get the COVID-19 vaccine. About 8,200 service members were discharged for refusing to comply with the Pentagon’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate, according to data provided by the service branches. However, the mandate was rescinded in January 2023 by the Biden administration, and since then, about 110 service members have rejoined the military. The president also signed an executive order directing the Pentagon to determine a policy for transgender service members based on readiness within 30 days. The action does not immediately ban transgender service members, however, it does state that the Defense Department’s policy for troop readiness is “inconsistent with the medical, surgical, and mental health constraints on individuals with gender dysphoria. “The order also states that identifying as a gender that is inconsistent with one’s biological sex “conflicts with a soldier’s commitment to an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle, even in one’s personal life” and that those doing so “cannot satisfy the rigorous standards necessary for military service.” Speaking about his plans at a retreat with House Republicans Monday at his property in Doral, Florida, Mr. Trump said, “To ensure we have the most lethal fighting force in the world, we will get transgender ideology the hell out of our military. It’s going to be gone.”Another order addresses diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in the military, banning the use of race- or sex-based preferences in the armed forces, the Defense Department and the Homeland Security Department. “I ordered the end to all of the lawless diversity, equity and inclusion nonsense policies across the government and all across the private sector and the military,” Mr. Trump said at the House GOP retreat. |

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari recently shared that he lives off rental income from one of his houses in Kaduna State, highlighting how he stayed honest while in office. At a political meeting on January 25 in Katsina State, Buhari talked about how hard it is to run Nigeria and explained how he keeps himself financially stable. Speaking in the Hausa language, he told everyone that he owns just three houses: one in his hometown of Daura, and two in Kaduna State. “After my eight years as a civil president, I have only three houses; one in Daura and two in Kaduna. I have given one out for renting where I get money for feeding,” Buhari explained. He believes many Nigerians don’t understand how complicated it is to lead such a diverse country. In his words: “Nigeria is a difficult country to govern, but most Nigerians are unaware. You will not understand the complexities of leadership and the country itself until you find yourself in the administrative position of the country. ”Since leaving office, Buhari says he feels much better. “I look much better and healthier now than when I was the president of the country. Anybody that sees me now acknowledges that I look better than before,” he said, sounding relieved. Throughout the meeting, which was held to prepare for upcoming local elections, Buhari stressed that no one could accuse him of taking money illegally while he was president, and he takes pride in having served without corruption during his time in office. |
