DETROIT, Mich. — A New York-based Satanist group has announced the unveiling of its sculpted ‘homage to Satan,’ which it seeks to place next to a Ten Commandments monument on the grounds of the Oklahoma state capitol building. As previously reported, the Satanic Temple issued a news release about its intentions in 2013 following the filing of a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which asserted that the presence of the Ten Commandments display on government property violated the Establishment Clause of the United States Constitution. The Satanic Temple said that it offered to to donate a statue of Baphomet to be placed near the Ten Commandments display in order to “appease the ACLU’s concerns.” “The statue will serve as a beacon calling for compassion and empathy among all living creatures,” spokesperson Lucien Greaves explained in his application to the Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission. “The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation.” The organization proceeded to launch an indiegogo fundraising campaign, which raised over $28,000 for the creation of the monument. “A Satanic monument erected in contrast to a Ten Commandments monument will send a clear and distinct message to the world that pluralism is alive and well in the United States,” it asserted. Last May, it was announced that the statue was nearing completion, which features the goat-headed figure Baphomet making the sign for the occult as he sits upon a throne with a pentagram overhead. Children fixate their eyes upon him on both sides. Connect with Christian News Follow @4christiannews In September, Seventh District Court Judge Thomas Prince concluded that the Ten Commandments monument serves a historical purpose and is not solely the presentment of a religious message as it sits on a plot of land that contains 51 other expressive monuments. However, despite the monument being upheld as constitutional, the Satanic Temple forged ahead with its plans to place the Baphomet statue on the capitol grounds. Now, the organization has announced that it will be hosting an official unveiling ceremony next month in Detroit. “As a ‘homage’ to Satan, the incredible statue is intended to complement and contrast the Ten Commandments monument that already resides on Oklahoma State Capitol grounds,” it recently wrote on its website. “The event will serve as a call-to-arms from which The Satanic Temple will kick off our largest fight to date in the name of individual rights to free exercise against self-serving theocrats.” The group invited supporters to “dress to impress the Devil” and “come dance with [him] and experience history in the making.” It is not clear whether the Satanic Temple has obtained permission to place the monument on the capitol grounds as it wishes. Some have expressed that the proposed “homage to Satan” is offensive to Oklahoma residents. “I think you’ve got to remember where you are. This is Oklahoma, the middle of the heartland,” Representative Don Armes told the Associated Press. “I think we need to be tolerant of people who think different than us, but this is Oklahoma, and that’s not going to fly here.” source: christiannews.net/2015/06/27/proposed-homage-to-satan-near-ten-commandments-monument-to-be-unveiled/ |

The National Broadcasting Commission has commenced the process of issuing licences for the provision of free view digital television content to be transmitted to Nigerian households. In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the Director of Public Affairs, NBC, Mr. Awwalu Salihu, said the regulatory agency, after a detailed assessment of the current television market, observed serious gaps in the content available to serve the social and economic needs of Nigerians. It, therefore, invited prospective service providers to submit proposals for meeting the gaps as a preliminary step towards applying for licences. The regulatory agency categorised FTV digital television into several genres, including general entertainment, kids, lifestyle, sports, movies/soaps/sitcoms, music, documentaries and factual/news. It stressed that the channels would strictly comply with the programming mandates of the commission as well as the Nigerian Broadcasting Code and other conditions to be set out in the licences to be granted to successful applicants. “In keeping with the commission’s laid down procedure, successful applicants shall be invited to formally apply for licences to provide channel content in accordance with the National Broadcasting Act, the Nigeria Broadcasting Code and the Digital Terrestrial Television Regulations,” Salihu said. He added that the proposals would be considered in a fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory selection process measured against high quality domestic and international content channel appeal across a range of demographics. Lagos-based lawyer and Industrialist Chukwudi Atueyi yesterday gave vivid details of what transpired at a meeting between some Igbo leaders and Oba of Lagos Rilwanu Akiolu, following which the traditional ruler was alleged to have made a controversial comment about the Igbo. Atueyi, who regretted the uproar that followed the meeting, said Oba Akiolu’s statement was not directed at the Igbo in Lagos but jocularly to his Igbo friends that visited him. He said: “All the Eze Ndi Igbo honorary chiefs in Lagos went to pay the Oba a solidarity visit on Sunday and I was fortunate to be among those present. What the Oba said was fully and simply directed to only the Igbo present at the meeting who his majesty considered to be very close to him and should understand him well enough. “You know when one talks to his very close friends and subjects, he tends to be very free with them, so he was being very free with those present at the meeting and wanted us to realize how serious and close he takes us and our votes, because he cannot imagine us giving him our words only to turn back and do the very opposite. “He did not force us to the meeting, we were the ones that went to him on solidarity visit, so it would be very evil of us to only go and deceive him there. He only jokingly (at least as it appeared to me then) warned the people present at the meeting who he considers his own people. The said warning that we are supposed to be very conversant with since we have all the “Ëze Ndi Igbo” present there, as that was not the first time we visited him, we are all already aware of the Yoruba culture and understood perfectly what he mean there was no specific place he referred to “all the Igbo in Lagos.” “He was only addressing the Igbos with him present there whom he considers his own people and he simply observed his culture which we all quite understood very well and this explains why there was applause and laughter at the end of his speech. We were expected to, thereafter, talk to our people in civilized manner to convince them and canvass for their votes if we truly believe we are capable of doing so. “The tradition of lagoon water threat was directed only to those present there at the meeting jokingly as culture demands, though he appeared serious but we all understood it as a joke, that was why we all applauded him and made fun of it there. “So I suspect serious politics at play here. I wouldn’t know who recorded the speech and decided to play politics with it. It is most unfair to his majesty to be portrayed in this manner and I think I owe it as a duty to speak up before things get out of hand. “I strongly suspect that all this is being portrayed in this manner simply to curry votes for the Saturday’s coming election. This is capable of making the people who could have been initially indifferent in performing their civic responsibility to now go out of anger and vote against the Oba’s advise in order to dare the Oba.” |
