Babachir Lawal discards Atiku, rallies northern Christians to back Peter Obi for 2023 State-run newswire NAN cited a statement released in Abuja on Thursday, indicating that the group comprising some northern Christian politicians had settled for Mr Obi. NEWS AGENCY OF NIGERIA • NOVEMBER 24, 2022 Babachir Lawal and Peter Obi Barely 24 hours after APC chieftain and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, declared support for Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the PDP, a group coordinated Mr Lawal has endorsed Peter Obi of the Labour Party as its preferred candidate for 2023 poll. State-run newswire NAN cited a statement released in Abuja on Thursday, indicating that the group comprising some northern Christian politicians had settled for Mr Obi, after a painstaking review and analysis of the alternative presidential ticket holders. The group, in endorsing Mr Obi, also endorsed his running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. Besides endorsing Messrs Obi and Datti, the group recommended LP candidates to Nigerians, saying they would ensure justice, equity, fairness and unity of the country. “As one of the foremost critics of APC’s single-faith presidential ticket and also in difference to those who have patiently waited for our guidance as to where to pitch our tent, after a painstaking review and analysis of the alternative presidential tickets, we now wish to recommend the Obi/Datti presidential ticket. “We wish to briefly narrate some few reasons among many, why we have endorsed this ticket and recommend it to all Nigerians of good conscience who desire justice, equity and a harmonious co-existence of all Nigerians across tribes, religion and geopolitical regions. “It is an indisputable fact that the whole of Northern Nigeria is currently mired in several intractable socio-economic problems, due to the activities of several nebulous criminal groups. “Agriculture, the mainstay of the northern economy, is all but abandoned because kidnappers and bandits have prevented people from venturing out of the safety of their homes,” Mr Lawal was quoted to have said. Mr Lawal also decried the lack of safety in interstate and intercity travels for either business or leisure. He said this was not only due to un-motorable roads but for fear of attacks by criminals such as kidnappers, armed robbery and bandits. “In our quest for justice and equity in the socio-political and religious space of the country, it is obvious that only the Obi/Datti ticket has the potential to deliver.” He said that the Obi/Datti ticket can speak on the genuine clamour for power shift to the South-East as well as the cry of marginalisation by people of the South-East. More than 1,000 Boko Haram members and their hostages surrendered to the Nigerian government, including two high-school students who were kidnapped seven years ago from the town of Chibok, in what security officials and mediators called a new chapter in Nigeria’s decadelong conflict. Ruth Pogu and Hassan Adamu, who were abducted in 2014 along with 274 other schoolgirls in what prompted the global #BringBackOurGirls campaign, emerged from the jihadist group’s Sambisa forest hideout in recent days, alongside men who called themselves their “husbands” and children born in captivity. The fighters surrendered amid a surge in fighting between Boko Haram and its rival, Islamic State West Africa Province. Another woman, taken last year from Chibok, was with them. Now in the custody of Nigeria’s intelligence agency, the women were being debriefed. Ms. Pogu was taken to the regional capital Maiduguri on Sunday and briefly allowed to see her family. The development appears to mark a new chapter in a war that has left more than 35,000 people dead and uprooted more than two million. In May, Boko Haram’s longtime leader, Abubakar Shekau, died after a confrontation with Iswap. Since then, his movement has lost battles and territory to Iswap and has suffered mass defections while Nigeria’s government has offered a “safe corridor” to jihadist members and their families who surrender. Nearly all of the Chibok students still living in captivity are with Boko Haram, said mediators, who hope the group’s disarray can help them negotiate the release of more hostages. The 2014 abduction gave rise to the #BringBackOurGirls social-media campaign, which spread around the world. PHOTO: OLAMIKAN GBEMIGA/ASSOCIATED PRESS “Most are quitting…thousands of fighters are coming out of the bush,” said one mediator closely involved, who described efforts to free additional Chibok students. A senior Nigerian security official working on the safe-corridor policy said the government was shocked by the number of people surrendering and was preparing an expanded camp to process the returnees: “There could be more of the Chibok girls among them.” ADVERTISEMENT - SCROLL TO CONTINUE Boko Haram militants seized 276 schoolgirls from their dormitory overnight on April 14, 2014, the evening before their final exams, igniting the #BringBackOurGirls Twitter campaign that transformed them into some of the world’s most famous hostages and a central prize in the war on terrorism. Some 110 of the hostages are now home: 103 were released in 2016 and 2017, in exchange for five fighters and a cash ransom mediated by the Swiss government. Since 2016, seven more have made their way to freedom. More than 100 remain unaccounted for after 2,677 days—still in Boko Haram custody or reportedly dead. While Nigeria’s military has sought to frame the mass defections as the consequence of a renewed offensive, security officials have confided that the shift is the product of internecine fighting between the jihadists. By Friday, more than 1,000 people—330 men and more than 700 women and children—had given themselves up around the towns of Bama, Konduga and Mafa on the edge of the Sambisa Forest, and more across the border in Cameroon, according to Nigerian security officials and mediators. In staged ceremonies, repentant-looking men have been photographed holding placards in English, some saying “Nigerians forgive us.” The Boko Haram members turning themselves in are largely foot soldiers and civilians the group had effectively enslaved but also include bomb makers, according to security officials. Vincent Foucher, an analyst at the International Crisis Group, a Brussels-based conflict resolution think tank, said the news confirmed that Iswap is ascendant and expanding its territory. “They are content to get new territory which is giving them more opportunity to attack. We’re already seeing instances of that,” he said. |
Embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has deleted a Facebook post in which he explained his relationship with alleged internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi. Mr Kyari was mentioned by Hushpuppi, as receiving part of the proceeds of fraud for which the latter is being prosecuted in the U.S. Hushpuppi, who has agreed to plead guilty to the fraud, told U.S. prosecutors that he gave Mr Kyari part of the proceeds of the crime. He said he also got Mr Kyari to arrest one of his Nigerian accomplices when they had a disagreement. Mr Kyari took to his verified Facebook page to state his innocence. In his statement, Mr Kyari said he did not demand any money from Hushpuppi. He, however, said he introduced the accused to a cloth seller whom he (Hushpuppi) paid about N300,000. Deleted/Edited post PREMIUM TIMES’ check on Tuesday evening indicates that the embattled deputy police commissioner had edited the post severally and expunged the section where he claimed he linked Hushpuppi up with his tailor. He also edited the N300,000 claim and included a section where he mentioned the sum of N8m. Few hours after editing the post, it was entirely pulled down from his page, creating room for more suspicion. Mr Kyari has been highly criticised by many Nigerians following his statement responding to the saga. The Police Service Commission (PSC) recently suspended the embattled officer from office as a deputy commissioner of police and head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT). His suspension was based on the recommendation of Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba. Looking at how events is turning up, abba kyari is a very corrupt officer
