Nairaland / General / FG Gives Condition To Lift Ban On Twitter by okiieli: 2:56pm On Jun 07, 2021
The federal government has given a condition to lift its indefinite suspension of Twitter in Nigeria.

Geoffrey Onyeama, minister of foreign affairs, said at a meeting with some envoys that Twitter’s operations in Nigeria will be restored only if the platform can be used “responsibly”.

Asked when the ban will be lifted, Onyeama said there is no definite timeline for that, but added: “The condition would be a responsible use of the social media and that really has to be it.”

“We are not saying that Twitter is threatening the country or any such thing; why we have taken this measure is to stop them to be used as platforms for destabilization and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities,” he also said.
At the meeting held in Abuja on Monday were the envoys of the US, UK, Canada, and the European Union, all of whom had condemned the “indefinite” suspension of Twitter in Nigeria.

Despite the government’s claim that Twitter is being used to undermine the existence of Nigeria, some have argued the suspension may be connected to the company’s decision to delete President Muhammadu Buhari's tweet recently.

In a joint statement issued on Saturday, the envoys had said: “We strongly support the fundamental human right of free expression and access to information as a pillar of democracy in Nigeria as around the world and these rights apply online as well as offline. Banning systems of expression is not the answer.”
This prompted the federal government to invite them to the meeting. After the parley held behind closed doors, Oneyema said both parties had successful discussions on the issue.

IS NIGERIA SHIFTING GROUND ON TWITTER’S SUSPENSION?

The minister said the government takes the comments of the envoys “very seriously”, hence the decision to discuss the matter with them in the “usual friendly way.”

He, however, insisted that the Buhari administration has to keep an eye on its “main objective and legacy” which, according to him, is the security of lives and property.
This prompted the federal government to invite them to the meeting. After the parley held behind closed doors, Oneyema said both parties had successful discussions on the issue.

Travel / M'sian Passport Ranks Fourth In Asia, Visa-free In 179 Countries by okiieli: 12:20pm On Dec 22, 2019
According to the rankings published by the Henley Passport Index, holders of Malaysian passport can travel to 179 countries visa-free.

This is an increase from the 2018's figure of 166 countries.

Malaysia is placed behind Singapore, Japan and South Korea in Asia, and is ranked 12th overall in the world out of 199 countries.

According to the HPI, published by advisory firm Henley & Partners, Japan and Singapore maintained their position as No 1 and No 2 respectively, with Japan able to access 190 destination, while Singapore is just one destination behind at 189.

South Korea jumped from third place in 2018 to tie with Singapore this year.

Although there are more places for Malaysia to visit visa-free, Malaysia's ranking dropped from 10th place in 2018 to 12th. In this year's index, Malaysia is tied at 12th place with Estonia.

War-torn countries, including Somalia, Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq ranked 104th place, with access to only 30 destinations visa-free.

The HPI report pointed out that Asian countries’ continuing dominance of the HPI reflects the "extraordinary effect that international mobility and migration has had on the region".

The report added that "experts anticipate that neither "the US nor EU member states are in line to substantially revise their current visa policies, whereas countries in other parts of Europe (such as citizenship-by-investment newcomers Moldova and Montenegro), as well as those in Asia and the Middle East, look set to continue seeking visa-waiver agreements with diplomatic allies."

"A question mark remains over the ultimate impact of Brexit. While the deal hangs in the balance, it is difficult to anticipate what the ultimate ramifications will be for EU and UK citizens, as well as for EU and UK trade and co-operation," it said.

The report noted that insights from the data showed that the ever-growing trend towards visa-openness is unlikely to slow down.

Why create a thread if the information shared isn't 100% valid?

When did Mozambique become visa free for Nigeria passport holders?
Have you visited Mozambique before?
If no, why share information of places you haven't thoroughly researched on?
You can't just repost any information you find via google search.

Have you heard of terms like
transit visa or sufficient funds?
Please which airline routes Nigeria to Barbados or from Nigeria to Samoa?
Do I need a transit visa for these routes.
These are areas you should research on before posting.

Thank you!
