Pandemonium broke out at the Lagooz
Schools on Omotoye Estate in the Orile
Agege area of Lagos State after some
hoodlums invaded the school premises.
PUNCH Metro learnt that some Hausa
teenagers, numbering about 100, stormed
the school with machetes and other
weapons.
They were said to have attacked the
school’s principal and a teacher, identified
as Uncle John, during a free-for-all which
lasted for about two hours.
Our correspondent was told that the
rampaging youths, aside damaging some
property of the school, allegedly made
away with N1.5m.
Policemen from the Elere divison,
operatives of the Special Anti-robbery
Squad and some members of the Oodua
People’s Congress, were said to have
repelled the attack as residents fled the
area.
Our correspondent was told that seven of
the hoodlums were arrested, while others
escaped after SARS operatives opened fire
on them.
A resident, who spoke on condition of
anonymity, said trouble started when the
school finished its valedictory service party
on Saturday, but the teenagers refused to
leave the school premises.
He said, “They were actually relatives of
some of the school-leavers. The
valedictory service party ended around
5pm, but they refused to leave. A teacher,
Uncle John, tried to force them out. One of
them abused the teacher and ran away.
“The teacher, who was embarrassed by
the abuse, held one of the Hausa
teenagers. There was a struggle between
them. As the teacher hit the man, he also
fought back and held the teacher by the
neck, almost strangulating him.
“The principal, who wanted to settle the
fight, was held by the tie by one of the
intruders and beaten up. The principal’s
brother, who wanted to rescue him, was
given a fist blow in the eye.”
Our correspondent was told that the
teenagers damaged about four dozen of
the chairs used for the party. Three of
them were later apprehended by the
school.
Those apprehended were reportedly held
hostage in a classroom, while the others
wreaked havoc on the school premises.
A source told PUNCH Metro that the
apprehended teenagers, however,
mobilised more gang members into the
community on the telephone.
He said, “Those boys had their phones and
they started calling their friends, who
trooped into the school with cutlasses and
weapons.
“Policemen at the school’s gate prevented
them from gaining entrance as they shot
into the air. The hoodlums, however, grew
in number, which overwhelmed the security
agents.
“Despite the gunshots, the teenagers
refused to go. In fact, while some of them
knelt, others prostrated and were begging
the police to shoot at them. They were
saying, ‘Please shoot us; we want to die’.”
It was gathered that some OPC members
later came out with weapons and engaged
the hoodlums.
The proprietor of the school was reported
to have called for reinforcement from
SARS operatives, who stormed the
community.
“The SARS operatives started shooting into
the air. They chased the teenagers and
arrested seven of them. They also seized
their motorcycles and recovered some of
the weapons they brought,” another source
said.
It was learnt that some Hausa leaders had
visited the school and held a truce meeting
with the management.
The Proprietor of the school, Chief Yomi
Otubela, said it was only a minor
disagreement among pupils of the school.
He said, “The issue was about some
teenagers who had issues with themselves
on where to park their cars. The police
that were on duty at the school gate
actually mediated. No school property was
damaged; nothing happened during our
valedictory service.”
But the Police Public Relations Officer, SP
Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the attack,
adding that seven suspects had been
arrested.
She said, “Some hoodlums entered the

A doctor allegedly raped a woman during
an abortion procedure two weeks after
he masturbated in front of her during a
physical examination, a court has heard.
According to Tribune 242, after Dr. Gerald
Mark Forbes informed the 20-year-old she
would need a medical examination to work
at his clinic in Freeport, the Bahamas, last
February, he was alleged to have rubbed
her vagina and masturbated before her.
The report added that two week’s later,
after the victim asked him to terminate a
pregnancy, he was accused of raping her
during the procedure.
The 47-year-old is also said to have given
the alleged victim a packet
of Methotrexate, a drug used to induce
abortions.
The defendant told the police as heard by
the Grand Bahama Court that the woman
was a ‘friend of a friend’, who simply
worked at his office for two months. He
denied the allegations of rape and indecent
assault.
However, he refused to answer officers
when asked about the alleged incidents,
telling them he ‘had nothing to say’.
The court was told that in a WhatsApp
exchange that took place after the alleged
rape, the doctor told the woman he didn’t
owe her salary because he had provided
her with medication.
During the police interview an officer told
him, “The virtual complainant informed you
that she will not return to work because
she was uncomfortable that you violated
her, and you said you were sorry she felt
that way and you told her to still come in
for follow-up and medication.”
The trial resumes at 11am on Friday. |
A major decision, which intending or
married couples are usually faced with, is
how to manage their finances.
Before a couple takes the decision to have
a joint account, it is advisable for them to
have proper knowledge of its benefits and
associated risks. One of the reasons why couples keep joint accounts is the mutual security and reassurance that they have without doubting each other. A couple with high trust for each other and who have similar spending and saving habits may be more comfortable keeping a joint account than those in which one partner is a good saver and the other a heavy spender. A joint account enables a couple to plan their budget, spend and invest their funds together. However, partners can sometimes feel trapped with their spending if they have to get permission from each other before they can access the money. In the event of death of one partner, the other automatically gets the money in the account without having to go through the tedious process of getting a letter of administration. However, if the relationship turns sour and they separate or divorce, having a joint account may end up as one of the most stupid decisions they ever made. Either of the couple can clear the entire money in the account even if he/she was not the one that deposited the funds there. Even if a partner decides to take legal action to get the money back, this may take a long and stressful process without any assurance of winning the case. What is a joint account? A joint account is a bank account opened in the names of two (or more) individuals. There are various reasons for opening a joint account. The most common is certainly to make it easier for a couple to manage their finances, especially when they need to pay shared expenses. All those holding the joint account have the same rights when it comes to withdrawals, deposits and any other banking transactions allowed in the account. As a result, each account holder can do transactions without first obtaining the other account holder’s permission, unless the account has been specifically set up to require this consent. The risks - Since both account holders own the joint account, each person can manage the account at his or her discretion without the consent of the other account holder. For instance, any of them can withdraw funds or even close the account. Banks will accept the instructions of either account holder because both of them are authorised to act alone, even though the account is jointly held (unless otherwise indicated). The account holders are jointly responsible for all of the instructions received by the bank relating to the joint account and for the commitments made by each account holder relative to the joint account. If the couple decide to separate or divorce, the funds in the joint account may be considered marital property. If the bank receives a garnishing order (seizure by garnishment), the joint account could be frozen, or in some provinces garnished, preventing the account holders from accessing the funds. The funds deposited in the account may be subject to the rights of the creditors of either account holder (for example, in the case of bankruptcy or insolvency) and may also be subject to claims made against either of the account holders. To open a joint account *You need to understand the risks and advantages of a joint account. *Do you understand how it works? *Do you understand your obligations under a joint account? *Since your account co-holder has the same rights as you with respect to the joint account, do you understand that your partner can use the funds in the account even if you deposited the money? Is your joint account co-holder trustworthy? *Has that person always been honest with you? *Do you know the person well enough or have you known each other long enough to trust him or her? *Is the person likely to act in your interest? *Does the person have personal problems that could prevent him/her from managing your joint finances properly? *How much control will you have over the funds in the account? *Have you asked your bank if there are ways to retain some control over the transactions done in the account? *Are you in a position to regularly check the account statements in order to know about any irregularities? In the event of an account holder’s death *The account will be subject to a right of survivorship. This means that in the event of death of one account holder, the surviving account holder retains all of his or her rights relative to the use of the joint account, including any remaining balance. *Ask your financial institution or legal advisor to explain what will happen to your joint account property if one of the account holders dies or becomes legally incapacitated. *Consider including information about your joint account in your will so that your wishes will be clear. |
A textile trader in Gbagi Market, Ibadan,
Oyo State, Kudirat Oduola, has been beaten
to death by thugs allegedly sent by a co-
trader who lent her N2m.
Our correspondent learnt that the
deceased, who was three months pregnant,
had approached one Oriekun to assist her
with the money to buy textile materials.
The deceased’s brother, Abdulahi
Asimolowo, said Oduola paid the N2m debt
five months after it was borrowed, adding
that Oriekun, however, insisted that she
would collect N400,000 as interest for five
months.
He said, “It is a common practice among
traders at Gbagi Market to assist one
another with money to buy goods. No
interest is usually charged. This was what
happened between my sister and Oriekun.
“Oriekun assisted my sister with the sum
of N2m, which was refunded after five
months. She, however, insisted that she
would collect interest on the money for
another five months. She said she would
collect N400,000 per month. She also
threatened the deceased to consider
herself a walking corpse if she refused to
pay the interest.”
Asimolowo explained that the deceased
later agreed to pay the interest when she
could no longer cope with Oriekun’s
harassment.
“She actually paid some of the interest,
but when she could no longer continue, she
told Oriekun that she was tired of paying
because she could no longer afford it,” he
added.
Asimolowo said on May 19, 2016, some
thugs were allegedly sent by Oriekun to
deal with the deceased for failing to pay
the money.
He said, “The thugs beat her up and left
her when she collapsed. She lost her
pregnancy as a result of the attack and
she was rushed to the hospital.
“She was taken to a private hospital at
Olodo area, and later transferred to the
Police Hospital at Eleyele. From there, she
was transferred to the University College
Hospital where she died on July 9, 2016.”
Our correspondent learnt that Oriekun had
been arrested by the Oyo State Police
Command.
The Police Public Relations Officer,
Adekunle Ajisebutu, confirmed the incident,
adding that investigation was ongoing. |
The police in Lagos State have arrested a
32-year-old woman, Chinoso Okonkwo, for
allegedly using pupils of some secondary
schools in the Ikate, Surulere area, as
commercial sex workers.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Okonkwo was
arrested on Wednesday after residents
gave the police a tip-off that some teenage
schoolgirls were being taken to a hotel in
the area – Sunderland Hotel – for sex
during school hours.
Our correspondents gathered that Okonkwo
allegedly worked with a syndicate which
usually went to the school to lure the
victims out during school hours.
The girls reportedly always removed their
school uniforms and put on clothes
provided by the syndicate.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Okonkwo also
allegedly posed as a nurse to deceive her
victims.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police,
Fatai Owoseni, who paraded the suspect,
said investigation was ongoing into the
matter.
He said, “Detectives arrested her on
Wednesday. Her mode of operation is to
target some secondary schools in the area.
She, together with her cohorts, would go to
the schools and get the girls to a hotel.
The hotel is located in Ikate, Surulere. She
would change their clothes and use them
as sex slaves.
“She would keep the girls in the hotel until
the school closing time and make them
change back into their uniforms.
Investigation is still ongoing, and we will
extend it to the hotel and the schools
which are involved. We want to see
whether there is connivance between the
suspect and the school authorities.”
Speaking with PUNCH Metro , Okonkwo, a
mother of two, said she was based in Port
Harcourt, Rivers State, where she worked
as a trader.
She added that she sometimes came to
Lagos to work as a sex worker.
Okonkwo, however, denied knowing any of
the schoolgirls, saying she only worked in
the hotel as a commercial sex worker to
raise money for her business in Port
Harcourt.
She said, “I am a widow with two children.
They are both in a boarding school in Port
Harcourt. I live in Port Harcourt, but I
sometimes come to Lagos to sleep with
men at the hotel. I came to Lagos to find
a means of livelihood.
“I use Sunderland Hotel in Surulere. When I
was arrested by the police, I saw three
girls, probably aged 10 or 12, who claimed
I usually picked them from school to the
hotel.
“I don’t know any of them. In fact, let the
police visit the hotel for investigation. I
have never seen them before. I meet men
for sex and they give me money. I use the
money to buy clothes and take them to
Port Harcourt to sell. I have been in this
job for a long time. I am a familiar face at
the hotel. I do this for a living.” |
The All Progressives Congress member
representing Kogi West Senatorial District,
Senator Dino Melaye, on Thursday said he
called Senator Oluremi Tinubu a stupid
woman on the floor of the Senate during
an executive session because she also
referred to him as a dog and a thug.
Melaye, who addressed parliamentary
reporters in the National Assembly,
however, denied using vulgar words against
Oluremi, the wife of the leader of the APC,
Senator Bola Tinubu.
He vowed not to apologise to Tinubu for
allegedly assaulting his wife even as he
said that the APC leader could not
determine his future political career
because the politician was not God.
Melaye said, “…I did not use any insolent,
abusive, degrading or mannerless
language. So, there was no reaction from
any of our colleagues as regards my
presentation. After I spoke, so many other
senators spoke and I did not mention the
name of any senator while I was making
my presentation.
“Unfortunately, Senator Oluremi Tinubu got
up and for reasons only known to her, the
first thing she said was that she’s being
harassed in this chamber by Senator
Melaye.
“I kept quiet at that point. …At that point I
was still very calm, she got up again and
said that ‘this thug must be tamed.’ At that
point, I got up and I told her that she is
very stupid. The next statement from her
is that ‘you are a dog.’
“She called me a dog and when she called
me a dog I stood up and I reacted and I
told her that this is not Bourdillon and that
she should look at my face, I am not one
of those senators who normally come to
prostrate to them in Bourdillon.
“ I told her I am from Kogi State, I am not
from Lagos State and that there would
never be a day that I will come to you for
political assistance. These were my words
and she went on shouting dog, thug.
“I want to tell you gentlemen of the press
that for every action there must be a
reaction. When I got up to address my
colleagues she was not the only senator
there.”
Melaye also denied ever saying he would
impregnate Mrs. Tinubu.
He said, “It is fallacious, malicious and a
lie that I said I will impregnate Mrs.
Tinubu. Biologically, it is even impossible
to impregnate Mrs. Tinubu because she
has reached menopause.
“If you also look at that statement for
those of us who are intellectually mobile,
how can you say you want to beat
somebody and at the same time you want
to impregnate the person if you juxtapose
the two is there any correlation? Does it
make any logical sense? So, when they
planted this falsehood they did not think
deeply.”
He also said though he read in the
newspaper that the APC leader was
demanding an apology from him for
abusing his wife, he would not do so now.
“I read from the social media that Senator
Ahmed Bola Tinubu through his media aide
is asking me to apologise. I will not believe
that a man of his calibre will ask for
apology without hearing from both parties.
“However, when I get confirmation that
Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu actually is the
one asking me to apologise, I will also
address him accordingly.”
Meanwhile, the South-West zone of the
APC has warned Melaye to stay away from
the zone for threatening to beat Mrs.
Tinubu.
In a statement signed by the Zonal
National Secretary, APC South-West, Ayo
Afolabi, on Thursday, the party described
Melaye as an example of ‘vagabond in
power’, saying, however, that it was not
surprised by Melaye’s conduct towards a
woman because he never had a successful
marriage.
“Meanwhile Senator Melaye should regard
the South West Zone as a no-go area if he
refused to tender a public apology and
desist from such unruly behaviours on any
colleague from any party of this country in
the future. A word is enough for the wise.”
The party also called on the Inspector
General of Police to take note of Melaye’s
threat to kill anybody that testified against
the accused persons in the Senate forgery
case.
Also, women in the Osun State chapter of
the APC have condemned the alleged
assault of Mrs. Tinubu by Melaye. |

The National Leader of the All
Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola
Tinubu, has asked Nigerians to hold the
Peoples Democratic Party responsible
for the ongoing fuel scarcity across the
country.
Speaking to journalists in Lagos on
Saturday, Tinubu said the PDP
destroyed Nigeria during its 16-year
rule.
The APC chieftain said the PDP refused
to pursue what was necessary for the
growth and development of the country.
He said, “We want to stay focused and
redirect Nigeria. We want to reverse the
decay of 16 years. We are hearing
comments from the PDP left and right.
We are saying we want to clear the
mess they created. For 16 good years,
the PDP destroyed the country. We
should not be lamenting over petrol
queues today if they had seen what was
necessary and done what was necessary
for this country.
“We can’t be emotional and live in self-
denial. They should have done the
Awolowo Road and the Lagos/Ibadan
Expressway. If they put priority on our
railroad, if they put priority on
electricity generation and distribution,
we will not be in this mess today.”
Tinubu also debunked the speculation
in some quarters that Nigerians were
dissatisfied with the President
Muhammadu Buhari-led APC
government.
He said, “Nigerians are not impatient
with the APC government; they just
want to see the direction of the
economic policy and want to be certain
of the future. They want to be assured
that we will not continue the leaderless,
directionless and hopelessness of the
past 16 years.
“The fact is that Nigerians do not want
the importation of toothpicks to
continue, we can make toothpicks out of
our bamboo trees. Nigeria does not
want to import rice or plastic. Nigeria
does not want to continue in the
direction of the past 16 years. What did
they leave behind in our account? Why
should certain things that we bring into
this country become our priority? Why
do we have to import those things that
we can produce? The country needs
surgical operation in the hands of a
very honest Nigeria.”

The National Universities Commission
has described as erroneous and
misleading the news making the round
that Nigerian medical students will now
spend 11 years to obtain their first
degree.
The NUC’s Head, Information
Department, Mrs. Adebukola Olatunji,
said in a statement on Monday that
medical students will only spend seven
years in school, rather than 11 years
which was widely reported in the news.
Olatunji said newsmen misrepresented
the NUC’s Executive Secretary, Prof.
Julius Okojie, who was quoted to have
announced the 11-year training period
for medical students while giving the
keynote address at the matriculation
and inauguration of the University of
Medical Sciences, Ondo, on March 12,
2016.
She said nowhere in the keynote
address, entitled, “Development of
Medical Education in Nigeria: Prospects
and Challenges,” was 11 years
mentioned or implied.
According to Olatunji, what Okojie
explained was that the NUC’s basic
minimum academic standard for
Medicine and Surgery had been
reviewed such that anyone wishing to
study Medicine and Surgery and
Dentistry will first have to study any of
the four-year basic medical science
courses, such as Anatomy, Medical
Biochemistry and Physiology, before
proceeding to the clinical training that
would run for three years.
She said, “Although, the so-called ‘11-
year Medical Programme’ stories have
been credited to the Commission’s
Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie’s
keynote address, titled, ‘Development of
Medical Education in Nigeria: Prospects
and Challenges’, which was delivered at
the Matriculation and Inauguration of
the University of Medical Sciences,
Ondo, on Saturday, March 12, 2016,
nowhere in that lecture was 11 years
mentioned or implied.
“Prof. Okojie, who was represented by
the Deputy Executive Secretary l, Prof.
Chiedu Mafiana, had explained that the
new curriculum provides for a seamless
seven-year programme.
“With the new curriculum, a medical

have not eaten all day, I am not fasting but am in despair and in shock. How can I explain this to you? By this time last night, she was in my arms, we were cuddled together Unclad and just finished making love to catch up for the lost time. It was pleasurable as usual and we enjoyed it. We haven’t seen each other for few weeks and we were in love. She was the lead chorister in my church, a vibrant sister, very beautiful but was my lover and partner in sin. I saw her off at about 10:18PM. It wasn’t up to 30 minutes when my phone rang, I picked it up only for the caller to tell me the owner of this phone was killed by a trailer that failed break. I was hit by a tsunami, lost composure and started crying. When I finally got to her house, people were in sad mood but were praising God that a dedicated sister has returned to heaven, but deep inside me I felt a great guilt and I knew deep down what we did in secret. Friends, do you know life might end today? God forbid, but its possible. Do you also know death can come unexpectedly? Do you realise that some people might sleep this night and never wake up tomorrow, what if I am among them? Do you know where your soul will go to? Do you know people might say good things about you on your funeral because of what they know, but your secret sins and life style might place you in hell? Kindly examine yourself (1Cor. 13:5) this night in case tomorrow never comes. Its not late today but it might be late tomorrow. God will forgive you right now if you repent sincerely. Ask him to forgive you. Rededicate your life to Jesus. Eternity will surprise many. PS. Pls tag a friend and ensure all your friends read this post today… !! Eternity may be a click away.. !!! |

With the poor state of the economy where
manufacturing companies’ capacity utilisation is
low, and the cost of production is high,
employers are laying off workers regularly.
The job loss trend is not only affecting the
manufacturing companies, firms in other sectors
are also feeling the heat.
Experts advise those who may have lost their
jobs during these trying times not to lose hope
because the skill sets they have gathered when
they were employed can still fetch them quick
money.
Moreover as a student, making money through
legal means is an opportunity to value hard work
and earn an income.
What life conditions have you found yourself in?
Do you have family responsibilities that you
need to take care of? Are you in need of quick
money to offset some debts?
Take a part-time job
A Travel/ Tech writer, Jovago.com, Ms.
NkemNdem, says that taking on a part-time job,
especially for people on vacation can be very
handy.
She points out that they can make quick extra
cash, with part-time jobs that include tips.
She says, “You can work as a night waiter in a
restaurant or club, a retail clerk, or sales
person. Most times, it will take at least two
weeks to receive that first paycheck, but if you
are good at negotiating, you can land yourself a
part-time job that pays you per hour or at the
end of the day.”
She suggests that odd jobs are other options
even though they may not seem glamorous as
they are usually menial jobs,
On the other hand, Ndem says odd jobs offer
immediate money in your pocket.
Citing examples of available odd jobs in the
country, she says, “You could babysit, walk dogs
or do general cleaning; you just need to offer
your services for a reasonable price.”
Sell unused assets
Ndem observes that the best time to get rid of
old items that are no longer useful may be the
time when you need the extra income to solve a
dire problem or survive.
According to her, people can get quick cash
when they clean out all their unused items.
She says, “Check your closet, book shelves, and
store and sell your clutter for cash. Remember,
if you have not used it or worn it in the last
year, it is certainly time to let go. If for some
reasons, you do not own anything you can sell,
make something and sell.
According to Ndem, the growing trend for
vintage and homemade products shows no sign
of stopping and the Internet is full of well-
known shopping outlets for such wares.
She adds, “You would be surprised the kind of
things that sell quickly on e-commerce
websites. Aside from handmade items such as
crafts, jewelry, painting, you can try soaps and
perfumes although these typically take a little
longer to make. Again, do not limit yourself to
Internet sales; consider specialty stores for
some items.”
Register for competitions
Ndem says it is generally known that Nigerians
love promos and grand prizes, adding that there
are many companies in the country which
always have some sorts of competition or
promo running that would benefit the winners.
She explains, “The prizes usually consist of
large sums of money, which when won, can give
the winner a lot of extra cash. A good way to
get quick cash would be registering for these
competitions. While entering these competitions
comes with no guarantees, there is a growing
community of people making a lot of cash on all
sorts of competitions.
“Competitions available for entering range from
simple registration forms to social media page
liking and answering questions correctly over
the phone to a TV/radio game show.”
Offer training classes
Everyone has some sort of knowledge to pass
across and another great way to earn money is
by teaching skill acquisition classes, Ndem
says.
For instance, she says a fitness expert can start
an exercise or nutrition class in a large spacious
area in his or her residence, estate or a hotel
area.
She adds, “From cooking, makeup, bead-making,
hairdressing, instrument playing, dancing and to
dog training, people are willing to pay to learn
about many fields of knowledge, and you can
benefit from that. You just have to make sure
the class sounds unique and irresistible, that
way you will have people signing up over and
over again.”
Affiliate marketing
Experts define affiliate marketing as the
process of earning a commission by promoting
other people’s (or company’s) products.
A Business Consultant, Mr. GbengaOgunbanwo,
says people who are very active on social
media can start earning extra income by
promoting company’s product and services.
He adds an active blog or website can be used
to promote other people’s businesses in
exchange for money.
For instance, he says, “Jumia offers affiliate
programmes for people who are willing to
partner them to promote its products on your
website and earn a commission with every order
placed from your website.”
Ogunbanwo advises that other organisations
which offer affiliate programmes can be a
means of steady income for people who are
willing to take up the opportunity. |
The police in Lagos have arrested a commercial
bus driver, identified only as Akeem, and his
conductor, Sodiq, for allegedly robbing and
raping a 22-year-old lady in the Costain, Iponri
area of the state.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Akeem and Sodiq,
along with two others still at large, had picked
the victim, Mercy (pseudonym) from the
Obalende area, and were supposed to head for
the Victoria Island where the victim reportedly
had a job interview.
Our correspondent gathered that Mercy, who
hails from Otupko, Benue State, and holds a
Nigerian Certificate in Education, on March 10,
had been called by a friend to attend the job
interview.
It was learnt that the suspects allegedly
diverted to the Costain, Iponri area, assuring
their victim that they were only taking a
different route to the island.
When the bus got to Costain, under the bridge,
the four allegedly robbed Mercy of her
Automated Teller Machine card, her purse and
other documents. The suspects also allegedly
raped the lady before driving off.
It was learnt that after the robbery, the victim
went to report the matter at the Iponri Police
Division.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the suspects were
not found until last Tuesday when members of a
vigilance group in the area, who were also
informed about the matter, nabbed the driver
and his conductor and handed them over to the
police.
Speaking with our correspondent, Mary said the
suspects confused her because she was new in
Lagos and she was not familiar with most of the
roads.
She said, “On that day, I was at Obalende when
my friend called me that there was a job
interview on the Victoria Island. So I entered a
bus heading to the area. Not long after, three
men entered as well. The driver drove towards
CMS; when I inquired, the other passengers said
I should be calm as he was still heading for the
Island. I thought he was trying to avoid the
traffic.
“When we got to the bridge in Costain, they
stopped and they collected my purse, mobile
phone, ATM card, PIN and N2,000 cash on me.
After they left, I told my elder brother that some
men had attacked me.
“He came and we both went to the Iponri
division to make a report, but the robbers had
withdrawn N120,000 through the ATM.”
An executive of the vigilance group, Ishola
Musbau, said, “The case of a jobseeker being
raped and robbed by miscreants was brought to
our attention. It took us two weeks to fish out
Akeem and Sodiq, and the victim identified
them.
“The driver and the conductor were
apprehended at a hideout in Itumara, Costain,
where they usually gathered for robbery
operations.”
Our correspondent gathered that the police were
still hunting other fleeing members of the gang.
A police source told PUNCH Metro that Akeem
and Sodiq had already been charged to a
magistrate’s court.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo
Badmos, could not be reached for comment as
of press time. |
Nigerians did not elect us to give them excuses,
Lai Mohammed the Federal Minister of
Information has said.
The minister who spoke in Yola yesterday, while
in Adamawa as part of the presidential
entourage led by the Vice President Prof. Yemi
Osibanjo, attending the wedding of the son of
the Adamawa state Governor Sen. Mohammed
Jibrilla Bindow also reiterated that the fuel
crisis would soon be over.
” Yes, we appreciate the feelings of Nigerians.
We also go through it, because we are not
immune to it. As a responsible government. A
government that was propelled to power by the
votes of the people we cannot give excuses but
empathise with them. And this government is
working 24 hours to ensure that this problem is
resolved,” Mohammed said.
The minister who pointed out that Nigerians, did
not elect them to give them excuses however
noted that the All Progressive Congress led
administration as a responsible government was
doing everything to ease the current suffering
resulting from fuel scarcity.
He said the federal government is working to
ensure that in two weeks time the commodity is
made available in all parts of the country and
alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians.
According to him, the government had already
taken some steps in that direction, he said, ”
some short term, some medium term and some
longer term. Because the question will be what
are we doing to alleviate this problem because
that is what concern Nigerians.”
Some of the measures he highlighted include
the government’s appeal to oil majors to make
forex available to their companies operating in
the downstream sector of the oil industry,
adding that the difficulties encountered in
getting foreign exchange was partly to blame
for the fuel crisis.
Lai who noted that other measures taken by the
government is to open up the sector for smaller
modular oil farms to be set up however stressed
that the government was is not unaware that
the ultimate is for the country to be self
sufficient in the production of the commodity.
He added that once the government gets this
done it would solve the problem of the fuel
crisis and thus alleviate the sufferings being
faced by the people. |
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old security man, Freedom Barryneh, for allegedly raping his neigbour’s daughter, aged eight. The incident reportedly happened on Akali Street, in the Ajegunle area of Lagos State after the victim, Sandra (pseudonym), approached the suspect and requested N10 from him to buy biscuit. PUNCH Metro learnt that after giving her the money, Barryneh, who was watching a pornographic film when the minor entered his apartment, persuaded her to stay with him. While the movie was on, he allegedly told Sandra to UnCloth but she declined, saying her mother would beat her for doing so. The suspect, however, allegedly resorted to force and allegedly dragged her into bed and raped her. Our correspondent gathered that Sandra, who was warned by the suspected rapist not to disclose the act to anybody, eventually opened up to her mother when she began to feel pains in her private parts. The victim said, “I asked Mr. Freedom (Barryneh) to give me N10 to buy biscuit and he did. He took me inside his room. He was watching one video that was showing naked men and women. He asked me to remove my clothes, but I said my mother would beat me. He pushed me and put me on his bed. He removed my clothes and put his thing inside my private parts. I was afraid of telling my mother.” Her mother, identified only as Ellen, reported the incident at the Ajegunle Police Division which led to the suspect’s arrest on March 3. PUNCH Metro saw that the results of medical tests conducted on the girl at the Ajeromi General Hospital, Lagos, stated, “Hymen broken with bruises around the infroitus.” The result, which was signed by one Dr I.A. Dauda, also stated that she suffered from “whitish foul smelling vaginal discharge.” Barryneh, who hails from Rivers State, admitted giving the girl N10 to buy biscuit, but denied raping her. He added that the allegation was an attempt to blackmail him. He said, “I work with a private security outfit. She and her friends were playing when she came to me that she needed N10 to buy biscuit. She stood somewhere in my room waiting for the money. I was watching a love movie titled, ‘Naked Weapon’. It involved sex. I was surprised when her mother reported at the station that I raped her daughter. I never had sex with the girl. I only gave her the money.” A police prosecutor, Woman Sergeant Francisca Okere, brought Barryneh before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court on two counts of rape. Okere told the court that the offence contravened sections 137 and 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The charges read in part, “That you, Freedom Barryneh, sometime in August 2015, at about 14.30 hours on Akali Street, Ajegunle, Apapa, Lagos, in the Apapa Magisterial District, did penetrate sexually with your penis the privare parts of an eight-year-old girl, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.” The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge before the presiding magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Adegite, who admitted him to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum. While adjourning for March 24, 2016, Adegite added that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must present to the court evidence of tax payments. |
The Federal Government has set up a panel to investigate the allegations that a Junior Secondary School II female student of Queens College, Yaba, Lagos was sexually assaulted by a male teacher. The government in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations, in the Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Ben Goong , said the investigative panel had two weeks within which to submit its report. The statement, however, did not disclose the identity of the members of the panel. A parent, Chinenye Okoye, had on Saturday accused a Biology teacher living on the school premises, Mr. Olaseni Oshifala, of sexually assaulting her daughter. In setting up the panel, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah, urged its members “to do a thorough investigation to unravel the truth behind the allegations.” The panel was also mandated to “make recommendations to government on how to deal with the situation based on the principles of truth, justice and fairness to all parties.” The statement advised parents, guardians, students and staff of Queens College who may have credible information on this matter to avail same to the committee through the telephone number: 07034613096 and email: saniabdu59@yahoo.com . Anwukah assured the general public, particularly parents and guardians whose children are in any of the Unity Schools and other Federal Government Colleges that their children are in safe hands. According to him, government will continue to do everything possible within the ambit of the law to protect their wards in all government schools across the country, including Queens College, Yaba in Lagos. The Minister called on all parents to remain calm and avoid taking rash decisions that may affect their wards adversely. The Parent-Teacher Association of the school had on Monday, set up a panel to also investigate the alleged sexual harassment levelled against the teacher. The Chairman of the PTA, Beatrice Akhetuanen, had told a news conference that the panel would be working with the Police Station in Sabo, Yaba to investigate the teacher accused of the act. |

“The minister wishes all Nigerians a happy

Nollywood actress and President of the Actors
Guild of Nigeria, who is currently in detention
on charges of manslaughter, has sought bail
citing health reasons. This is coming after the
embattled actress’ March 11 failed attempt to
secure bail.
The three-man panel, presided over by Justice
Ndukwe-Anyanwu, said that the appellant
failed to attach copies of the judgment that
was delivered by the court which affirmed the
five years jail sentence imposed on her.
In a six paragraph affidavit of urgency
deposed to by one Victor Eden, the deponent
averred that a tumour was expelled from
Ibinabo’s breast.
The trial magistrate had earlier given the
appellant an option of N100, 000 fine for the
offence. This judgment was, however,
overturned by the high court, which replaced
the option of fine with a five-year jail term.
The court of appeal has fixed April 7 to hear a
bail application causing the actress and ex
beauty queen to file an appeal through her
lawyer, urging the court to set aside the five-
year sentence. |
LAGOS — Former President Olusegun Obasanjo
has expressed angst against those asking him to
account for recovered Abacha loot, describing
them as illiterates and stupid people.
He also said there was nothing wrong in
President Muhammadu Buhari’s frequent trips as,
according to him, Nigeria needs to be in touch
with important centres of the world.
Obasanjo, who stated this in an interview,
weekend, said the role of his office was to
facilitate the recovery process and not how it
was put to use.
He said: “They said the money recovered from
Abacha, I should account for it. What stupidity!
The man who asked for it, the man who gave
the judgement or who answered them are all
stupid, with due respect.
“I don’t keep account, all Abacha loots were sent
to Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and every bit of
it was reported to Minister of Finance. My job
was to write where we can get help to recover
the money.
"Every penny that comes out of it went to CBN,
so if they want to know what happened to the
money, they should call CBN governor or call the
Minister of Finance.
“But again, it shows ignorance, total ignorance,
which is lacking and you wonder, are these
people educated? They can also approach the
man who helped us in recovering process to give
the list of money recovered and where he took
it.”
On fluctuating oil price
On fluctuating oil price, Obasanjo said President
Buhari was lucky than he was, saying: “When I
assumed office in 1999, I inherited $3.7 billion in
reserve, while Buhari met $30 billion, almost 10
times of what I met then, and the price of oil
then was $9. When it got to $20, I was dancing.
“I know the price is down now and with time, it
will jump up again. What Buhari is doing currently
is preparing ground for Nigeria to take advantage
when it goes up again.”
Justifies Buhari's frequent foreign trips
Obasanjo, who justified Buhari's frequent foreign
trips, said President Buhari needed to get
involved in the world.
He said: “He needs to be known and to know
people. How do you make friends and influence
people except you know them and this cannot
happen if he sits in Aso Villa, especially in a
situation that we found ourselves, a situation
where we have bad image in the world, a
situation where we need to play leadership role,
especially in Africa, because during Jonathan’s
administration, Nigeria was not on the table.”
On Biafra agitation
Obasanjo, who described the Biafra agitation as
a platform for people of the South East to make
their voices heard, insisted that Biafra was dead.
He said: “I sympathise with people agitating in
the country, but what Nigeria needs to do now is
to get our economy back on track. When you
have a bad economic situation, such is expected.
So I did not see their cause as a threat but I see
it as a platform to get their voices heard.
“Like I said on January 15, the important,
authentic leaders of the South-East are
concerned about economic situation of Nigeria
and I believe when the situation changes
tomorrow, these young people will sing a new
song.”
No regret putting Jonathan forward as President
While expressing no regrets in facilitating the
emergence of former President Goodluck
Jonathan as President, Obasanjo said his
objective had been achieved by making a
minority group to produce the president of
Nigeria.
He said: “I believe that Nigeria politics will be
strengthened even more if we have the
opportunity to allow the minority in its own right
to emerge as President, and I do not have any
apology for anybody because the purpose I
wanted Nigeria to achieve had been achieved.
“That any Nigerian can become president, it is
not a regret for Nigeria and for me because
Nigeria gave him that opportunity, he used,
abused, misused as he wished and at the
appropriate time, Nigerians said thank you for
what you have done and what you have not done
and Nigeria said bye bye, which is the beauty of
democracy.” |
