Lagos Nigeria, October 2022: The construction and project managers of the Lagos Central Food Security Systems & Logistics Hub, Rhema Project BCEGI, a subsidiary company of the Origin Tech Group, has said the park will provide over thirty thousand jobs during the project lifecycle and more upon completion.

The Lagos Central Food Security Systems & Logistics Park is a Lagos State initiative to control and modernize the food and commodity produce market system by building a well-thought-out central logistics hub to eliminate waste along the commodity value chain and provide increased profit for the operator, whilst reducing cost for consumers.

Speaking on the project after a trade delegation visit to inspect a similar project – Rungis Market in France, the Project Manager and MD of Origin Tech Group, Prince S.J Samuel said, “as Lagos modernizes, more and more Lagosians and even businesses like restaurants, cafés, and hotels are demanding for an efficient food delivery platform for both fresh and processed food that delivers on global standards.”

“Construction is currently ongoing on the project, and we will be engaging over four thousand workers during this first phase of the project. We estimate that we will need over seven thousand more workers during operations. This is asides the employers that the over one thousand companies expected to occupy the facility will also be employing.”

He went on to say “we paid a visit to France in the company of the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture, and it was a very educational experience. We used the market as a case study to model on their business model, spatial requirements of facilities and to have a firsthand experience of the daily modus operandi”.

“In terms of the operational logistics, we also paid a visit to the Royal Flora Holland in Amsterdam. The Royal Flora Holland is the world’s largest cooperative that deals in floriculture. We visited them because of their excellent logistics capabilities in managing all their growers and suppliers across different continents.”

The Lagos Central Food Security Systems & Logistics Park upon completion will be the largest of its kind in Africa and will provide facilities for both long and short-term wholesome food storage, processing, and distribution of local food produce to serve the population of Lagos State.

The Federal House of Representatives Committee on Industry, led by Honourable (Dr.) Enitan Dolapo-Badru, visited Origin Tech Group and its subsidiary, Origin Automobile Works (OAW), as part of its oversight activities. Governor Babajide Sanwoolu alongside the Executive Chairman of Origin Tech Group, Prince Samuel Jospeh Samuel toured the mid-Level Agro Food Hub under construction at Abijo in Sangotedo, Eti-Osa during which the governor commended Origin Tech Group on the over 90 percent completion of the facility with finishing works now ongoing.

According to the Governor, ‘’This hub, built on 23, 000 square metres of land, will provide storage facilities, trading floors, and parking, helping residents in this corridor access fresh food more easily. It is a part of our broader plan to decentralise food distribution across Lagos’’, the Governor reiterated.

Prince Samuel Joseph Samuel, Executive Chairman, Origin Tech Group, the technical partner for the development of the project told the gathering that similar hubs are underway in Agege, Lagos Island, Oregun, and Ikorodu which have reached various completion stages while plans have already been put in place for more of such hubs in Epe and Badagry all of which will connect to the main logistics hub in Ketu-Ereyun, which will serve as the backbone of the food distribution network.

The governor was accompanied on the tour by his deputy; Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat and Barr. ‘Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Secretary to the State Government.

One of the tournaments played then was the Independence Cup, like American Cup, Japanese Cup, and the Korean Cup among others. These events were organised to celebrate different national days. But in the case of Nigeria, there was a vacuum because the Independent Cup played at the time stopped. Thus, the Nigeria Cup came as a tournament that would celebrate the Independence Anniversary of Nigeria. Over the years, the Nigeria Cup has grown to become one of the most sought-after competitions at the Golf Section of Ikoyi Club 1938 and it is still growing.

Executive Chairman of Origin Tech Group Nigeria, Prince Samuel Joseph Samuel, has admonished Nigerians to key into President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of agricultural revolution captured in his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and as encapsulated in the Greener Hope Agricultural Productivity Programme (GHAPP) as a catalyst for unlocking the nation’s economic potentials.

Samuel reiterated this position while receiving the Governing Council members of the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU-Ile-Ife led by the Vice Chancellor at the corporate headquarters of the Origin Tech Group in the continuation of talks around developing robust partnership between the university and Origin Tech Group.“Agriculture is key to Nigeria’s growth potential”, said Samuel, “in driving Nigeria’s economic development.” He maintained that agriculture value-chain presents “an opportunity that can easily transform Nigeria’s economy into an engine room of prosperity through partnerships, strategic investment, strong governance, and sustainable practices and as such the pivotal role of tertiary institutions such as OAU is very important.”

“The Nigerian population continues to grow at nearly 3% per annum with a projection of 378 million by 2050, and with nearly 70% of its population are under the age of 30 leading to increasing urbanization and invariably an increase in food demand. In a bold move to transform Lagos and invariably Nigeria’s food ecosystem, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday launched the Produce for Lagos programme, a strategic initiative backed by a ₦500 billion off-take guarantee fund. Held in Lagos, the launch drew dignitaries from across the country, including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Niger State Governor Umaru Bago and their Kogi and Taraba states counterparts, whose states have formally joined hands with Lagos in what is being described as one of Nigeria’s most ambitious agricultural partnerships.

At the heart of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Lagos, Ogun, Niger, Kogi and Taraba States, setting the tone for a symbiotic relationship. These partnering states will grow and supply essential crops such as paddy rice, grains, legumes, and tubers, while Lagos, with its massive consumption base, will offer a structured, dependable market.But beyond the fanfare and politics, the vision driving Produce for Lagos finds real-world traction in the insights of Prince Joseph Samuel, an accomplished entrepreneur, founder of Origin Tech Group, and one of the country’s leading voices in agricultural transformation.

“This is not just another food programme,” Prince Samuel told reporters at the event. “Produce for Lagos is a framework designed to correct decades of disorder in Nigeria’s agricultural value chain by bringing order, capital, and commercial viability to the forefront.”

“We are de-risking agriculture,” said Prince Samuel. “By eliminating uncertainty for both lenders and farmers, we’re creating a system where farming becomes bankable and profitable.”One of the key challenges in Nigerian agriculture has been post-harvest losses, which, for food entering Lagos, currently stands at a staggering 50 percent. Prince Samuel believes that Produce for Lagos will reverse this trend through investment in storage, cold chains, and efficient logistics.

“Reducing post-harvest loss is the fastest way to make food cheaper and improve farmer incomes,” he said. “With proper off-take guarantees, farmers will not lose sleep wondering if their produce will rot or find a buyer.”

He cited past efforts like the Imota Rice Mill, an ambitious Lagos investment hampered by poor paddy supply, as examples of why production must be tied to guaranteed demand. “The mill was a great idea. But this time, we are solving the supply issue first. You can’t run a mill without grain,” he noted.

With over 30 years of experience, Origin Tech Group has led the charge in scaling commercial agriculture through mechanisation, training, and support. “We are not idealistic,” Prince Samuel said. “Agriculture is hard work. But with capital, structure, and offtake assurance, we are making it viable. This is how you scale up a nation’s food security.”As Nigeria navigates a complex economic landscape, Produce for Lagos emerges as a hopeful blueprint, one grounded in strategy, collaboration, and a rare combination of political will and private sector ingenuity.

Apparently concerned with frightening dearth of the skill sets in Agriculture, Nigeria’s foremost agribusiness and food systems company, Origin Tech Group, has instituted a structured internship programme dubbed ‘’Origin Eagle’’ to stem the tide.

Speaking in Lagos at the graduation ceremony of the cohort 4 of the programme, Prince S J Samuel, Executive Chairman, Origin Tech Group stated that the internship initiative was created to address major gaps in Nigeria’s agribusiness sector.

According to him, the idea emerged in 2012 after the company encountered several challenges within the industry, including a shortage of skilled young professionals.

“One of the biggest challenges was finding resources and young talent. The second was transferring knowledge and skills, and the third was raising future leaders,” he said. He noted that many agricultural students graduate without adequate requisite skills and experience.

“Some students go through school without ever seeing a tractor. Some never see crops being planted or harvested. Others never see major agricultural equipment throughout their stay in school. These were some of the motivations that compelled us to act – to provide ourselves as a platform where students can come to and learn’’, he said.

During the graduation ceremony, which was held at the company’s premises in Oregun, Lagos recently. The ceremony brought together senior executives, industry partners, project stakeholders and proud interns who completed the rigorous training programme designed to equip young graduates with practical skills, discipline and leadership capacity.

For Rebecca Oluwabusuyi, the year-long programme was more than just training; it was a transformative experience, “The experience was very valuable and hands on,” she said. “It taught us accountability, being resourceful, speed, and integrity.”

Another beneficiary, Miracle Balogun, shared a similar sentiment about the programme’s impact on his professional growth. Reflecting on the one-year training, he described it as both challenging and rewarding. “The experience has been top notch and truly great because it exposed us to real life engineering and problem-solving skills,” he said.

For the young graduates, the Origin Eagle Internship Programme has not only provided skills but also opened the door to careers in a sector critical to Nigeria’s future. And according to them, the journey that began with uncertainty has now become the foundation of their professional lives.

Food systems giant, Origin Tech Group Nigeria Limited has entered into a Partnership Agreement via a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with one of Nigeria’s leading academic institutions, the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). The agreement is geared towards delivering strong synergies in end-to-end agricultural value chain, leveraging Origin Tech Group’s proven expertise in agriculture and agribusiness and OAU’s excellence in teaching, research and development.

The Partnership Agreement and MoU signing ceremony which took place at the University’s Campus in Ile-Ife was executed on behalf of Origin Tech Group by Mr. Olusesan Ayeni, the Executive Director, Corporate Services and Professor Adebayo Bamire, the Vice Chancellor of the University.

In the words of Olusesan Ayeni, “this robust agreement is anchored on establishing a best in class centre of agriculture in the Southwest of Nigeria harnessing the vast potential of the region in farming through a unique handshake, standing shoulder to shoulder and linking the vast capabilities of Origin Tech Group in large scale mechanised farming management with the deep knowledge of the University in capacity building and manpower development.”

Ayeni said that the overarching purpose of the agreement is to create “a corridor of excellence and opportunities by deepening the Nigeria’s food system, providing impetus, access and necessary exposure to scholars and young minds studying agriculture in the university to a culture of practical, knowledge-driven, modern and smart methods through mechanization that ensures large scale commercial farming system for a food secured nation.”

He commends the institution’s efforts in scholarship and for being a worthy participant in the training of Nigeria’s past, current and future workforce, praising the current and past leaders of the institution for their commitment to excellence.

“No other place is more worthy of hosting such an endeavour we are erecting today other than the highly revered citadel of academic learning as the Obafemi Awolowo University. The environment is not only appropriately suited for academic excellence but can also serve as a hub for transforming agricultural productivity, centre of excellence in mechanization and exceedingly strong support systems for agriculture.”

Prof. Adebayo Bamire, expressed the “optimism, readiness and openness of the university community to worthy initiatives and partnership such as this, embodied in the hopes, dreams and aspiration that it holds for the current and future generations of faculty members, scholars and agripreneurs.” He said the agreement couldn’t have come at a better time: “matching our quest to bringing the best opportunities available from industry players such as the likes of Origin Tech Group to boost, scale and shape scholarship initiatives into finely crafted products and services that help deliver food security, employment opportunities and wealth creation.” The institution, renowned for its beautiful architectural flair, sits on a large expanse of land including cultivable land for agriculture couple with expansive depth in agriculture education.

Bamire pledged to work assiduously with his team to provide all the support that will be required by the company to ensure that the overall objectives of the agreement are accomplished.
