The bitter truth is that you don’t want this enough. Feb 2024 till now and you are confused. Learning to code today is so much easier than ever. You have AI tools. In our time we would go on stack overflow to ask questions and get bullied and our accounts flagged. At a point I had like 20 different accounts on Stack overflow. If you are confused, I don’t know what to say to you. Maybe you should choose another career.

I usually don’t comment on posts like this, but for posterity’s sake, I’ll say this once more:

If you’re a Nigerian and you’re privileged to have supportive parents, access to a laptop, internet, and electricity, and you don’t have to worry about food you don’t realize how much God has done for you. Take it extremely seriously.

It doesn’t matter how you start. I began with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Today, I work with financial systems, and I recently got a job that allows me to use Objective-C, Java, AWS, and Heroku. Tech has opened doors for me I never imagined, and I’m still just getting started. My next goal is to transition into AI engineering or integrate AI into my current work as a programmer.

Don’t let negativity on the internet discourage you. Just the other day, a few fresh Unilag graduates landed top jobs with major firms in the UK. Personally, I left Nigeria for Chile, and even as a student, I was working with the biggest bank in the entire country.

If you’ve been given the privilege of the right environment and tools, don’t take it for granted. Tech can change your life. it changed mine.

Nigeria has a population of over 200 million people. And guess what? These 200 million people need so many different things which they are willing to pay for. They need hairstylists, electricians, welders, drycleaners, tailors, plumbers, carpenters, writers, graphics designers, photographers, music producers, errand runners, drivers, teachers, managers, sales persons, waiters, gardeners, roof repairmen, vulcanizers, shoemakers, grocery shoppers, personal assistants, and MANY, MANY other services that they will happily pay for. That being said, why do people still complain about lack of jobs in Nigeria?

I understand that there might not be enough banks to hire graduate accountants, or enough hospitals to hire skilled doctors. But does that mean young unemployed persons should just fold their hands and do nothing? Is it by force to work a corporate job? Of course not. Because once again, we have 200 million people in Nigeria who all need something. The question now is, what skill do you have that can tap into the needs of people? If you have a skill, then market yourself to the right audience and start getting paid for the services you render. And if you don't have a skill, learn one and turn it into a paying job. It beats sitting at home and "hoping for the best" while your pocket and belly are empty.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you should stop your hunt for a corporate job. What I'm saying is, before you land that dream job, keep yourself busy by learning a skill, put it into use, and earn a living from it. I'm a graduate of the University of Port Harcourt, and I've never worked a corporate job in my life. After graduation, I relocated back to Lagos and started freelance writing, voiceovers, and graphics design. And I kid you not, I make more money from writing alone than most corporate workers make from their full-time jobs. The best part is that I work from home, I don't call anybody "sir" and no one can sack me. You can do the same if you learn a skill and monetize it. You'll find out it's very rewarding. At the very least, by learning a skill and working independently, you have helped ease Nigeria's unemployment problem in your own little way.

Now, I know you're wondering about raising capital to branch out on your own. But guess what? There are some hustles that require very little capital. I started with my android phone during my early days of freelance writing. Now I have my laptops to work with. I know a guy in my hood who learned barbing at another barber's shop and has since been doing home services for good money. He's not rich yet cos he just started, but he's not begging for food either. I mean, there's a lot you can do instead of waiting around for a corporate job. look, as long as you're making money from even the most local basic skill, then you have a job and you've become a blessing to your family. You've become an asset not a liability.

Of course, nothing good comes easy, so you'll have to put in effort and be disciplined. You'll be happy with yourself at the end. Because once again, Nigeria has a population of over 200 million people willing and ready to pay for your services. So learn a paying skill today and let's end unemployment in our country, one independent job at a time.
