Nothing excites one more than a meal time, especially when the aroma from one of your best meals awaken and flirts with your taste buds. But then again, some of the best meals don’t have a perception or the pride of tickling the taste bud; this is the category most natural foods fall and much so, the breast milk! Unlike many other foods, the consumption of breast milk doesn’t hinge on its taste or aroma; it comes with just one quest; fortifying the newborn with all the necessary nutrients to make them grow well and healthy. Experts described breastfeeding to be the best thing that can happen to any human being; that is the very first care a baby will enjoy and also the first bonding between the mother and her newly born child. It is also an opportunity for the mother to have possible inventions from some ailments. Since the creation of man, it has been justified that every newborn is fed by milk from the human breasts. This has stood the test of time despite the fact that occasionally, some cultural exigencies attempt to alter the importance of this very laudable practice of breastfeeding. Dr Ayodele Adewole, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, at Reproductive Endocrinology Unit, Mother and Child Hospital, Ondo, Ondo State, explained that in the late 70s and early 80s in Nigeria, mothers who breastfed their children were often looked down upon by others as being poor, and the practice of feeding neonates and infants with instant milk formulas was seen as a status symbol. He added that with advancement in medical science coupled with the obvious benefits traceable to breastfeeding, the practice of formula feeding of infants was not only relegated to the background, but out rightly discouraged. Since the discovery of breastfeeding as the only way and only food a newborn should rely on to strengthen his immune system, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nation Children Fund (UNICEF) have taken the lead in promoting breastfeeding as essential for the upkeep of the newborn. Dr Adewole said: “The WHO and UNICEF had adopted the practice of breastfeeding for all mothers by instituting the Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) in the year 1991 following the ‘Innocenti Declaration.’ This was aimed at implementing in all hospitals and maternity centres, the practice which will support, protect and promote exclusive breastfeeding of infants for the first one year of life.” There are many advantages of breastfeeding. The first breast milk to be let out soon after delivery, according to experts is called colostrums; it contains essential nutrients and even defence enzymes and proteins which confers some immunity to newborns. Breast milk does not need to be prepared, always ready on demand for the baby and thankfully, does not expire unlike infant formula, and does not run out of supply. According to Dr Taiwo Aderemi, Medical Director, Safeway Hospital, Ibadan, the best care a baby can get is to have the luxury of being fed with breast milk. “The child has the best nutrition that can be offered, the function of colostrums, which has to do with building immunity for the child and helping to adapt to the new environment is also there. There is also the bonding relationship between the baby and the mother. Also, it has been documented that those who breastfeed their children very well have a measure of prevention against breast cancer.” Unfortunately, researches have shown that new generation mothers, especially career women, have other ideas of what caring for newborn baby should be. Seventy per cent of women prefer to feed their babies with infant formula after the third month of delivery, young mothers also complain about the loss of shape or rigidity of their breasts when they breast feed their babies. Interestingly, Dr Adewole hinted that it is expected that with the exception of medical instances where a woman might not be allowed to breastfeed, “she should breastfeed her infant(s) exclusively for the first six months of life, without the addition of any other liquid or water. Thereafter, infant formula can be introduced while the baby continues breastfeeding till the infant gets to 18 to 24 months. “Breastfeeding should be encouraged among all our nursing mothers as it fosters the development of strong, healthy, and intelligent babies. Another advantage of breastfeeding is that mothers who exclusively breastfeed are not likely to get pregnant as the hormone that sustains exclusive breast milk production also prevents ovulation,” he hinted. Furthermore, Dr Aderemi added: “Being busy is not an excuse, we recommend that people work in baby-friendly environment; find crèche close to their workplace, extract breast milk and feed the baby with that and at close intervals, they should visit the place to give more breast milk to the baby and continue when they get home. So, everything should be worked out perfectly; both to favour the baby and the mother. “A baby that is not well breastfed may not have sufficient immunity to cope with challenges of life. Also, nutrition from other sources is not the same as breast milk. The substitute we have in our environment are from animals, however the technology tries to compound it and make it appear close to breast milk, it is still not yet a good substitute. But where we cannot help it, they come handy,” he advised. As the saying goes in medicine, if you give your baby cow milk, you will probably breed a cowboy. |
LEADERS of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State have called for the re-integration of Senator Rashidi Ladoja, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, Mr Seyi Makinde and others into the umbrella party, if the party must return to winning ways in future election. They also expressed reservations over the choice of Uche Secondus as acting national chairman of the party, averring that “people with questionable character should not be allowed to hold positions within the party.” These were part of the recommendations of the party’s chieftains, under the aegis of Oyo State PDP Leaders of Like Minds, presented to the Emeka Ihedioha-led PDP post-election review sub-committee sitting in Ibadan, on Thursday. Those who signed the nine-page memorandum presented before the former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives included Dr Saka Balogun, Senator Ayo Adeseun, Chief Jumoke Akinjide, Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi, Professoor Taoheed Adedoja, Professor Soji Adejumo, Mr Femi Babalola, Alhaji Kunmi Mustapha, Alhaji Bisi Olopoenia and eight others. The leaders said the hijack of the party structure and consequent imposition of unpopular candidates with the support of some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) forced Ladoja, Alao-Akala, Makinde and others out of the party and led to its dismal performance at the last elections. “The party should imbibe the culture of transparent internal democracy in all its dealings. If we want to regain our lost glory, conscious and concerted efforts should be made to bring back into our fold, all willing members of Accord Party, Labour Party and Social Democratic Party (SDP). “Since primaries did not actually hold in Oyo State, all monies collected from aspirants should be refunded by the party” “Party should strictly adhere to its guidelines on how delegates and party executives are to emerge. “The party has a structure in place to resolve crisis that might emanate in the party. However, operators of the structure did not imbibe the spirit of equity, justice and fair play in handling disputes,” they alleged. Just as the committee was receiving memoranda from Lagos, Ekiti and Oyo states, a group of protesters stormed the venue of the meeting to press demand for an all-inclusive party executive in Oyo State. Speaking through their leader, Honourable Akinwumi Akinfemiwa, the protesters, under the aegis of new PDP, called for an all-inclusive PDP in the state, to enable the party to recover every inch of lost ground in 2019. The book of change chapter 9 vs last And there rose a man from the sons of APC named Saraki, whose mother was PDP. He was a fearless man who fought his mother and went to live with his father APC. He rose before his brothers and fought to be crowned the minister in the altar of change but was challenged by the deadly king maker named Tinubu. And it came to pass that on this day the 9th of June, in the days of king Buha, the lion of Daura who was crowned by Tinubu the king maker, that Saraki opened a book in the gospel of change and gave the popular quote of King Buha which says "I belong to everyone and I belong to nobody" a significant meaning. In all stubborness and revolt against his father's house APC, Saraki fought under the anointing from his mother's family PDP, who never stopped loving him and was able to prove to the king maker that the kings quote is real and effective. He defeated the cruel king maker and was handed the holy books of change that he may minister daily from the alter unto everyone in the kingdom NOTE: This is a joke |
