A picture has surfaced from Aisha Buhari, the wife of the Nigerian president’s recent courtesy visit to the ancient city of Ibadan, Oyo state where she made a failed attempt to shake a prominent traditional ruler. Aisha Buhari has been accused of abusing the Yoruba culture of respect in relation to the paramount leader of Oyo State, in the person of Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III who is 77 years old. Aisha Buhari who was expected to respectfully bow or kneel before the Alaafin stretched out her hand for a handshake with the highly revered leader which he politely declined by making a fist. This action has attracted a hot debate on social media. Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III (born 15 October 1938) is the Alaafin, or traditional ruler, of the Yoruba state of Oyo and righful heir to the throne of its historic empire. Lamidi’s father, the Alaafin of Oyo Oba Adeyemi II Adeniran, was deposed and exiled in 1954 for sympathizing with the National Council of Nigerian Citizens (NCNC).

WARRI—President of Niger Delta Communities Intercessors Forum, Rev. Pere-Egbe Odogbo has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to continue with his decision to use dialogue as means of resolving the renewed attacks on oil installations in the region. Odogbo who made the call in Warri, Delta State, also appealed to Niger Delta Avengers to stop the bombings to allow time for dialogue to achieve peace in the region. Odogbo who is also the chairman of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Airport Road Unit, Warri, said that dialogue remains the answer and negotiation was the key but not violence, gun or death, stressing that the Federal Government should look at the suffering of the masses and negotiate with the people over the oil that is being milked from Niger Delta soil rather than the use of guns. “We are not part of Niger Delta Avengers. We are known as Niger Deltans. We have suffered oppression, marginalization, intimidation but dialogue is better than violence.” He noted that the Niger Delta situation and suffering have become unbearable for them as the river water they defecate on is the same water they drink. “We are worse than slaves in our nation yet the region is the economic nerve centre of the country. We are deprived of eating the good of our land. “Anyone who echoes his voice against the oppressors is either jail, silenced or killed such as Isaac Adaka Boro and Ken Saro Wiwa among others. We as Christian leaders appeal to the Niger Delta Avengers to stop the vandalization now, because it affects us and it scares away international investors and ruins our economy.”

A new national poll shows Hillary Clinton carrying a six-point lead over Donald Trump with both presidential primaries now in the rearview mirror, though both major party presumptive nominees remain challenged by controversies weighing on their campaigns. According to a CBS poll released Thursday, Clinton leads Trump 43% to 37% -- numbers that are down significantly for both candidates from a couple months ago, when they garnered closer to 50% and 40%, respectively. Clinton's advantage remains when Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson is included. In that scenario, Clinton draws 39% support to 32% for Trump and 11% for Johnson. The poll, which was mostly conducted before the Orlando terror attack, also asked voters on their view of the candidates' ability to manage terrorism and national security. Clinton received the edge on this issue, with 50% saying she would do a better job than Trump at 43%. |
