Politics / Re: President Tinubu To Set New Minimum Wage Next Week by Olamercy884(m): 4:05pm On Sep 20, 2023
This is nothing but a fake news. Tinubu cannot unilaterally set a new minimum wage. Maybe you mean to say a 'wage award', which is quite different from a minimum wage. A wage award is a percentage increase in the salary and allowance of workers to cushion the effects of the fuel subsidy removal.

Politics / Prof. Moses Ochonu's Rebuttal To Thecables' Article On Peter Obi by Olamercy884(m): 12:04am On Jun 23, 2022
Peter Obi is not the first governor to invest his state’s funds in a new, promising private company. Akwa Ibom, Lagos, and Delta states invested in the newly licensed and then new entrant into the Nigerian telecoms industry, ECONET.

Governors sometimes see an opportunity in a new venture and invest their state’s funds in it to grow and yield dividends as part of a future rainy-day investment.

So, such investments are not in and of themselves a problem.

The case of Peter Obi’s investment in SABMiller is being sensationalized for obvious political reasons because his family’s holding company, NEXT International, also bought shares in the new brewing venture.

The Cable is guilty of reckless and perhaps paid hack journalism by doing a shockingly fuzzy and misleading analysis of the state investment in question.

The Cable takes an investment that was made in in Naira 2011 (at a time when a dollar exchanged for N155) and for reasons known only to it and God appraised the value of that investment in dollars in 2022 when the dollar exchanges for N600).

What is the value of the N3.1 billion ($20 Million in 2011) investment in Naira today? The Cable fails to provide that all-important number.

What about the fact that, in 2018 (9 years after the initial investment), even with the Naira struggling at 380 to a dollar, the value of the N3.1 billion investment stood at N26.1 billion (or $72.4 Million)? The Cable leaves that crucial detail out.

What happened between 2018 and now to bring the dollar value of the investment to around $6 million is called Buhari-APC economic management, a combination of the Naira’s collapse and the collapse of the Nigerian stock market following a double-dip recession and other economic calamities.

It’s the same thing that happened to Nigerians’ Naira savings, which they realize when they’re making purchases in this hyper-inflationary economy or when they’re trying to purchase dollars to pay school fees for their wards abroad or to pay for imported goods. It’s the same thing that happened to Nigerians with stock holdings in Nigerian public companies. The value of these stocks has been wiped out.

None of these pesky little details makes it into The Cable’s specious analysis.

This is scandalous enough, but The Cable then neglects to collate and publish the yearly dividends (from profits) that Anambra state has reaped from the investment for the past 11 years.

This is abhorrent journalism designed clearly to damage the growing Peter Obi phenomenon. Candidate scrutiny is great, but it should be based on transparent disclosures and truth—the whole truth.

I am personally not convinced that Peter Obi can win the 2023 presidential election. I don’t think he has enough time to grow his support nationwide, and his party does not have the in-built advantage of having elected officials at all levels to help mobilize votes across the country in the hope of partaking in the spoils of victory.

Many of his ardent supporters agree with this realistic position, but it’s not just about winning for them, and there are scenarios in which Peter Obi and his supporters win even by losing. I am, of course, eager for my prognosis to be proved wrong and for him to pull the shocking political upset of the century.

Regardless of where you stand on Obi, however, you cannot accept this cash and carry journalism as a work of research or reportorial rigor, and you certainly cannot be dignifying it by sharing it approvingly.

Now, let’s return to the main issue of Peter Obi’s decision to invest Anambra funds in SABMiller-Nigeria. It was a well-intentioned decision. He saw a promising opportunity in a new company and decided that Anambra State should benefit from it. He didn’t recklessly risk Anambra’s money where he and his family were not prepared to risk theirs. And the investment has made money for Anambra, yielding a modest return for Anambra State even without factoring in the annual dividend over a decade and even in the face of acute Naira depreciation and other macroeconomic headwinds.

Obi did not personally profit from the investment, and I have not seen any evidence that the investment did not follow due process of approval by the state legislature.

Yet, good intentions and profitability aside, Obi should not have done it and would probably not do the investment under the same circumstances today.

There is no evidence that there’s anything illegal or fraudulent about the investment, but it doesn’t pass the ethical smell test. A cynical, prejudiced interlocutor could argue plausibly that, given the fungibility of shares, funds, and assets in a publicly traded company, Anambra State’s N3.1 billion investment helped to boost the share value of SABMiller-Nigeria, thereby indirectly and hypothetically benefiting Next International, Obi’s family holding company which also invested in SABMiller-Nigeria.

That said, if this indirect, far-fetched, and hypothetical scenario is all the APC-PDP political establishment can come up with against Obi’s 8-year sojourn in public office as Governor then the man may be as good as advertised and is certainly an angel compared to his opponents in the APC-PDP establishment.

Literature / The View Of A Nairalander On Belongingness. by Olamercy884(m): 8:03am On Feb 02, 2018
Of Sheep, Dogs and Excreta (1)

By Olayiwola Aanuoluwa.

The conception and evolution of a society is premised on a notion that man is a social and gregarious being that always want to belong to one group or the other. It is this thirst for belongingness that makes man organizes himself into groups ranging from smaller groups such as chums, cliques, caucuses, clubs and gangs to larger groups like communities, tribes and ethnic groups. It is also this sense of belongingness that informs the stratification of society into class. This class includes the lower, middle and upper class as the case may be with each of the class trying to extort and exploit the other - that is not the focus of this article.
It is perhaps the quest to sate the social needs of man that gives birth to social concepts like friendship, comradeship, fellowship, brotherhood, association, neighbourliness, amity, companionship and so on.
Interestingly, the yearnings for social needs is not peculiar to human race even though man is at the centre of it all. Some of the animals are classified as mammals, reptiles, birds and amphibians while each of the class can be further grouped into phylum and family. In another sense, some of the animals exist and live in colony (that is, a group of organisms of one species that live and interact closely with each other). There are ant colony, insect colony, bird colony etc.
Termites, bees and parrots are examples of species that exist in different aforementioned colonies. However, of all the animals, sheep and termites are very common to man as social specie.
It is because man is at the centre of creation that makes him metaphorically use other creatures - animals inclusive - to form and represent his thoughts, ideas, opinions and beliefs. That is why man will deftly use parrots for the talkative, pigs for the filthy folks. Sheep are often identifiable with the meek, peaceful, gentle and gullible folks. Generally, dogs are meant to depict the whoremongers but man still go a step further to attribute wanderlust to male dogs (Ako aja abi irin osi l'ese).
One of the beliefs of man is the scrutiny of a company/association to which an individual belongs or intends to belong. So much is the premium placed on belongingness that makes man coin different maxims, proverbs, sayings, adages, aphorisms and of course myths to regulate the affairs of our society.
That is why it is popular to hear sayings such as: "show me your friend and I will tell you who you are. Evil company corrupts good manners. Attitude is the prime compatibility for friendship."
Furthermore, man in his wisdom examines the lifestyles of two distinct animals - sheep and dogs - and denounce their association in terms of company and culinary delights. That is what informed the coinage of an age long adage: A sheep that grazes with a dog will eat excreta.
It is so sad that, nowadays, the adage is no longer carrying its usual weight and meaning. Anytime this adage is said, some folks are too quippy to say 'to ba fe je e ni' (that is if the sheep wish to eat from the excreta). They have grossly misconstrued the wisdom behind that proverb, that is why they no longer care about the kind of company they keep.
Our folklore has it that in those days it is common to use leaves to wrap faeces in the form of short put. If a sheep flocks in the company of dogs and gets to the spot where the faeces was thrown, the faeces immediately becomes food for dogs and since leaves are also food for sheep, the sheep will graciously accept the offer from its companion and eats the leaf with the remnant of faeces. It may taste differently in the first day. The second and third day into the companionship, the sheep will think differently and say: "...and faeces is not that bad o. Though it tastes differently from my regular cuisine, I can still afford to eat small chunks so as to continue to enjoy the affection of dog." Possibly at some point, the dog can even coerce the sheep to eat from the faeces. "After all, she was the one that enjoyed our company, she must be forced to do our biddings." That is how it goes on and on till the sheep is addicted to eating faeces and later left alone to bear the brunt.
If you fall within the ranks of folks that say, "that is if the sheep wish to eat from the excreta", and that is why you no longer census the kind of video you watch and music you listen to; and that also explains why you now dress crazily all in the name of fashion and civilization - you are doing yourself no good.
Since the advent of social media and other technologies, our society has increasingly evolved from the conventional physical association of people. It is now possible to interact with products of technology. We can now belong to different groups, access different information and engage e-friends, e-books, e-video, e-music and e-whatever on the internet.
As good as social media could be, it is also full of distractions and frivolities. Therefore, we must never lose our consciousness in interacting with it.
Today, social vices pervade every space of our national life and this is because our society is no longer congenial to hard work, patience, discipline, due diligence and professionalism. This explains why yahoo plus, kidnapping, money rituals, cultism, thuggery, hooliganism, gangsterism, fraud, gambling, prostitution, smoking, drug abuse, child abuse, rape, laziness, lateness, lies, indecent dressing, corruption, job racketeering, despotism, nepotism, impunity, cronyism, chauvinism, lack of respect for due process, examination malpractice, robbery, terrorism to mention but few, are fast becoming our societal norms and values.
In all, let us be wary of the company we keep because evil company corrupts good manner.

Thank you for reading.
