The last Thursday’s tanker fire on Otedola Link Bridge of the Lagos – Ibadan Expressway, that claimed several lives and properties is still fresh in our memory. Unfortunately, in less than 24 hours after the said incident, another fuel tanker explosion occurred on Suleja – Minna Road, as a result of head-on collision between a fuel tanker and a trailer. Thank God, no life was lost but 5 persons were reported injured.

Again, on Ojuelegba Bridge, Surulere, Lagos, a week ago, a container fell off a Trailer, three people were confirmed dead in the accident. Condolences to all the victims of the above stated sad events. As hilarious as this may sound, trailer/tanker mayhem seems to have become a common thing on Nigeria’s roads.
However, ours is a nation that is swift to condole with the victims and their family, rather than putting measures in place to prevent such occurrence. The maxim, ‘prevention is better than cure' is an irony in our society. ‘This is Naija', apology to the young Falana (Falz).

It is an undisputable fact that Nigeria is one of the leading crude oil producing nation in the world, but the nation can not boast of functional refineries that can adequately cater for local consumption of fuel. The failure of government in this regard, necessitated the need for shipping in refined fuel to the country, and the use of fuel tankers to convey the shipped fuel from seaport to various parts of the country. If these strategically located refineries are working effectively, their end product can be easily channelled through pipelines to points of usage with minimal use of fuel tankers.

Also, in other developed countries of the world, of which Nigeria aspires to be numbered with, fuel tankers and other heavy duty trucks travel only on railway tracks, specifically constructed for such purpose, and don't share the same road with other vehicles. Reverse is the case in ours, the rail network in Nigeria is a mystery, even to those manning the machinery of government. The rail tracks has perpetually remain in the deteriorating state.

Only for successive government (since the inception of our re-birth democracy in 1999), to disturb the air wave with endless award of this or that contract of modern rail network, with no visible evidence of such, save the Abuja – Kaduna rail network, recently commissioned by the present administration.

Moving forward, since infrastructural development is not a day's job, by government policy, fuel tankers and heavy duty trucks should be move away from busy roads and restricted to certain routes. Articulated vehicles should be certified before embarking on any trip. Training and re-training of drivers will go a long way, and if at all, tankers must need ply busy roads, restriction on the time of movement will be in order.

On the long run, a state of emergency should be declared in transportation sector, construction and completion of modern railway network, that will connect all parts of the country, should be accelerated through public private partnership. Thereafter, tankers and heavy duty vehicles should be completely move away from Nigeria’s roads. Also, our refineries should be revitalize, and new players should be encouraged to engage in fuel refining business. Government should invest on security to safeguard fuel pipelines. If all these are implemented religiously, fuel tankers and trailers mayhem will soon become a thing of the past.

Dissatisfied with about a score years rule of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigerians gladly embraced the “Change” as championed by Muhammadu Buhari led All Progressives Congress (APC), to rewrite the wrongs of the formal ruling party.

As a matter of fact, 2015 Presidential election was the first of it kind, in which an incumbent president lost the same election he presided over as a sitting President. This is an evidence of the enthusiasm shown by Nigerians towards the candidacy of Buhari, the self acclaimed repented “Democrat”.

On May 29, 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal government was inaugurated for a four-year tenure. Nigerians home and abroad welcomed the APC led government joyously, with high expectations, and the hope of actualizing the "dream Nigeria", was once again rekindled.

Alas! Three years after the historical inauguration, a good fraction of the populace have completely lost confidence in the government of the day. While others are in doubt of the ability of the central government towards actualizing a better Nigeria.

It will be recalled that the Buhari led government came to power with three cardinal points, they are: Security, diversification of economy and fight against corruption. Over the last three years, none of these three can be said to be close to a success.

The alarming rate of Herdsmen killings here and there, while some concerned State government watched helplessly, calls for a state of emergency. It is an open secret that the government has failed the masses in the area of security, though Boko Haram was said to have been degraded. A lot of women and children are still in captivity. Suicide bombers still kill at will.

The fight against corruption has not yielded any tangible fruit, presumed oppositions are the ones mainly being prosecuted. Again, the prosecution is more of media trial, with less success in the court of law. Even the acclaimed recovered money has not in any way translate to betterment of our national life.

On recovery and diversification of economy, though the statistics tends to be positive, but the Nigeria’s economy of today is still very fragile and largely oil dependent. The effort of government to promote agriculture and solid mineral resources is yet to yield result. Power is still grossly inadequate, health sector is not working, transportation system is far from better and education sector is in a state of collapse.

While a good number of Nigerians agreed that the 16 years reign of PDP was not the best for the nation, the APC government has not done any thing differently, rather things tends to be growing worse under the watch of the government of “Change”. Hence, it is safe to state that, both APC and PDP are birds of a feather.
As we look ahead to another decision making year, it is expedient that we should avoid our pitfall of 2015, look beyond the platform, religion, ethnicity and affiliations, rather identify with the right man for the job of rebuilding a new Nigeria, if there is any.

Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria and Happy Democracy Day to Nigeria's electorates.

Few days ago, President Muhammadu Buhari gave his administration a pass mark, while playing host to the visiting President of Gambia, Mr. Adama Barrow, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. In his remarks, Buhari said that Nigerians were accepting that his administration was doing its best, even if they were doing so grudgingly.

While the criteria used by Mr President to assess performance of his administration were not disclosed, but with all known factors taken into consideration, this government has performed below expectations of Nigerians.

It will be recalled that Nigerians welcomed APC-led government in 2015 with high expectation, after rejecting PDP-led government at the poll. Alas, for more than 2 years out of four-year term mandate, Buhari -led Federal government has not just disappointed the electorates but his government has refused to take responsibilities, rather, prefer to blame the past administration for its woes.

It is very unfortunate that the many promises of APC during 2015 electioneering, upon which the citizens massively voted for the party, has remained unfulfilled, rather things are getting worse on daily basis.

A school of thought believed that, the acclaimed fight against corruption is a mere means to curtail the limbs of presumed political opponents. A closer look at the war against corruption shows that, it is more of media trial than actual prosecution of suspected looters, in the competent court of law. Members of the ruling party are seen as saints. Also, the alleged recovered money is shrouded in secrecy.

The nation's ill-oil-driven-economy is gradually coming out of recession. Though the present administration may not be blamed for this, but the administration’s actions/inactions contributed to the pitiable state of our fragile economy.

On the cogent issue of insecurity, the government claimed to have technically defeated Boko Haram insurgency, but the war torn Northeast still experiences couple of suicide bombing on weekly basis. Also, another bloodsucking group in the name of “Killer Fulani Herdsmen” poses a great security threat. Apart from the above named groups, kidnapping, arm robbery, ritual killings, and other vices are still of great security concern.

In time like this, that the nation is thinking of industrialization as a key to sustainable development, the misery behind power failure, under Buhari's watch, is yet to be unravelled. Power supply is still largely inadequate. How can industries be operational without quality power supply? While couples of road constructions made their ways to the national budget yearly, a large percentage of Nigeria's roads remain unmotorable, and railway network connects few locations within the country. Medical tourism has continued unaltered, because of lack of up-to-date medical facilities, and the few available ones are not functional.

Stakeholders in educational sector have over the years watch helplessly, the falling standard of education. Institutions of learning turn out graduates annually, into the saturated labour market. Majority of our “able and willing” youths are unemployed, and few that are employed are either losing their jobs or underemployed. Prices of goods and services are in their peak in the market.

The big question is, what has this APC-led Federal government done differently to better the lives of electorates? Mr Buhari may thinks his administration is doing its best, but in the face of reality, his administration’s best is far below expectation of a common man in the street.

On October 1st, 1960, a sovereign state was born. Three years after, the young nation became a Republic, precisely on October 1st, 1963. Kudos to our founding fathers, who despite intimidation, harassment and imprisonment, put their lives on the line. Most of them even paid the supreme price, to purchase our freedom. Some of the heroes who fought tirelessly, for the actualization of Nigeria project include: Sir Ahmadu Bello, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Anthony Enahoro, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Herbert Macaulay to mention but a few.

Unfortunately, the Federal Republic of Nigeria went to a civil war (Biafra war), that lasted from July 1967 – January 1970, shortly after her independence of 1960. The civil war was fought between Nigeria government and the secessionist state of Biafra. A school of thought believed that the immediate causes of the civil war included a military coup & a counter coup of 1966 (which altered the political equation and destroyed the fragile trust existing among the major ethnic groups), and persecution of people of Igbo extraction, living in the northern part of Nigeria.

However, the civil war is presumed to be linked back to the 1914 forcefully amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria, despite their notable difference in the culture and religion of the people. The amalgamation was for the purpose of better administration due to close proximity. And as a matter of fact, the Biafra war was fought to reintegrate and reunify the country. For Nigeria, as it is called today, has never really been an homogeneous nation.

While the “no Victor, no vanquished” post war agenda of the Federal government is commendable, the development and execution of most national policies thereafter have been lopsided to date. Successive government has failed to address the major issue that led to Biafra war, in a manner required for true reconciliation. Although, the war officially came to an end in January 1970, but in the minds of the victims of war, the war rages on. Though few national conferences have been conveyed, their reports were practically dead on arrival.

Unfortunately, the silent raging war has metamorphosed into different ethnic, religious and regional grievances and frustrations, even after the rebirth of democracy in 1999. Various freedom fighters has emerged under the following umbrella; The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), O'odua Peoples Congress (OPC), Arewa Peoples Congress (APC), Niger Delta Vigilante (NDV), Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), etc. Most of these aforementioned groups emerged to challenge what they termed ‘marginalisation and injustice' against their respective constituents.
In the face of the recent agitations and the call for restructuring, which is due to unresolved issue that cost the nation the pains of civil war; it is expedient that the citizenry come together for a roundtable discussion, to extensively deliberate on the continuous existence of united Nigeria. We should be guided by reason rather than emotions. Deliberate effort should be made to strategize on how this heterogeneous sovereign state can move above her difference for the gains of all.

The officially recognized date of children’s day varies from one country to another. Children’s day is a day set aside to honour and protect the interest/welfare of children. This day is not simply to celebrate children for who they are, but to bring awareness to children around the globe that have succumbed to violence such as abuse, exploitation and discrimination. The day is celebrated in Nigeria on 27 May.


It is very unfortunate to note that in most countries of the world, most especially Nigeria, we as a society have failed on many occasions to protect children’s wellbeing through negligence, insensitivity and other vices. A lot of young ones had suffered violence and many are still suffering abuses, occasioned by our incompetency.



What can we say about sexual violation of minors by their “supposed trusted” friends and family members. How can we explain uncles, aunts, teachers etc, taking advantage of young ones. Fathers now find pleasure in defiling their own biological daughters. What are we teaching these adult in making by all these acts of sexual violence.

Domestic violence is another evil monster bewitching young at heart. Children who are precious gifts from God, are most times treated as an object of abuse in some homes, all in the name of punishment for wrong doing. Although correction is an essential component of child upbringing. The holy book even enjoys us to train our children and that we should not spare the rod. But there is a clear distinction between correction with love and punishment. Many minors have been disabled as a result of physical assaults.


Also, some parents and guardians do coerce their children in to risky ventures (I.e hawking househelp, prostitution etc), solely for financial gains. Some children have been lured by wicked ones while hawking, some have been physically violated in their madam's house while serving as househelp , and for those coerced into prostitution, some of them have been infected with terminal diseases.

Forceful abduction and child marriage also calls for concern. Eze's case brought to limelight the stories of minors who where forcefully or otherwise abducted without their parents’ consent, and in some cases, such minors may be converted to another religion. Also, a lot of children were forced in to child marriage even by their parents and guardians for monetary gain or any other reason(s). This is contrary to the right of a child.

Majority of victims of terrorism are women and children. Many of our minors are in the net of insurgents, some of them have been forced into child marriage while some are kept as domestic slaves. Abduction of Chibok girls and others are still fresh in our memory. Violation of  children for ritual purpose is another form of child abuse that needed to be curtailed. Emotional violence is a topic for another day.

The government and our parents are partly to be blamed for most of these abuses against children. Government should as much as possible ensure security of every child and protect the interest of every child  through legislation and appropriate implemented of such legislation. 

On the other hand, parents and guardians should be commended for their care over our children, but much is still needed to be done to safeguard the children from every forms of abuse and violations. Parents should be their children’s best friends, and as much as possible, parents should try to meet the needs of their children. Don’t entrust your child in the hand of people you don't trust.
