DROP THE ARMS!

Drop the arms
For in it, there are many harms
Learn to live in brotherhood
For it is not by accident you were raised the same hood

Stop killing your brothers
Stop being the source of grieving to your mothers
Because when you consider them your target, it's bad
But you think doing the right thing is hard

Can you stop all the senseless killings?
And tread the noble track of reconciliation and healings
Don't you think about the disheartening dearth of many dreams?
Or you're under the illusion of what you saw in foreign films?

Seek for the counsel of the enlightened, and not the retards
For you can only live in peace and tranquillity by dropping the firearms
So do it now, Drop the arms

Big Brother Naija: A timely palliative for restless Nigerian youth

A Satire By: Ogunrinu Olanshile

The scene is the presidential palace. It’s obvious that an important meeting is about to take place in the large conference room. The atmosphere is tense despite the cool breeze emanating from the giant air conditioners. The President, His excellency, is present, so are the Vice President and other important members of the administration. It is time for the monthly assessment of security reports and, as usual, Alhaji Mongunoo, the National Security Adviser (NSA), is presenting the aggregated reports of the agencies.

NSA: (Adjusting his eyeglasses and flowing babariga) Mr President, sir, the youth are getting more conscious politically; they are clamouring for a lot of things. The Revolution Now movement, despite how we punished and are still punishing its convener, has remained unbroken and are planning to hit the streets again to protest. They are becoming increasingly more popular among the youth. Arewa Lives Matter too are planning a huge protest against banditry and killings in their zone. Borno youth are starting to ask strong questions over the long run of terrorism in their states. Some celebrities are also taking part by clamouring. Even artistes like Tiwa Savagee who is only concerned with “stew and sugar cane” is now leading some kind of e-protest with the hashtag #WeAreTired.

Mr President: Uhm.

NSA: Mr President sir, it is because of this that we believe that distracting them will be the best option to douse the tensed atmosphere of the nation. You know Nigerian youth, sir, when you called them lazy, you were right and only being factual sir; they will forget their clamours and agitations as soon as there is something to entertain them. They will forget their pitiable conditions and get so absorbed in the ecstasy of their temporary eldorado. That is our submission Mr President. (Takes a seat while bowing.)

Mr President: Thank you Alhaji, that was a brilliant analysis. (Turning to other participants) So, what do you think can be done to distract the youth from their newly discovered activism?

VP Osibanjoo: Mr President, I think sponsoring a virtual 100 days of praising the Lord by a popular daddy G.O. and popular gospel artistes will do it. You know our youth love the Lord so much and can be radical for Jesus. They will soon leave their fight to God and start tweeting about the countdown to the 100 days.

NSA: Mr Vice President, that is a good idea but it will only interest the Christian section of the populace and we need to implement something that cuts across religion or tribe to capture their interests. Who else has any other idea?

Garuba Sheuu: Sirs, why don’t we spread the news that Magu fed N100 billion to snakes? That will capture their interest, they will start talking about how to “solve the matter”. I trust they will even make comedy skits and music on the issue.

NSA: (Obviously pissed) Mr Garbage…Sorry, Garuba! Why must you reason like garbage? That’s a foolish faux pas to commit. Who has a sensible idea that is workable, please?

Laureta Onochiee: (Curtsying while standing) Sirs, I think creating a Federal Ministry of Happiness will be a good idea and I can help in heading it.

NSA: Haba! Laureta! Have you been sipping your palm wine again? Who even invited you to this meeting? Go out abeg!

Mr President: So, there is no one with a realistic way to water down the restlessness of our youth’s activism?

(Femii Adesinaa raising his hand quietly)

Mr President: Yes, Femi?

Femii Adesinaa: Sir, I know this programme that will capture their interest, they will be so absorbed in it that they will give no Bleep … (bowing immediately). Sorry sirs, for the F-word, but they will be so absorbed in it that they won’t care about how much we add to the price of petrol. It won’t matter to them how many billions are being siphoned at NDDC. They will not even care anymore about their cries for justice for SARS victims. They will be so torn between being Titans or Team Lambo that it will not matter to them if their resumption to school is shifted to 2021. But sir, some of our conservative elders have kicked against this programme because it’s slightly raunchy.

Mr President: Speak up Femii, what programme are you talking about?

Femii Adesinaa: It is the one and only Big Brother Naija, sir.

NSA: Mr President, Femii is right and I believe this is the best way to arrest the situation.

Mr President: (Speaking to his aide) Contact the organisers of the programme, ask them what’s stopping the show, ask them to add 90 more days to the time housemates are to spend, suspend requirements for social distancing! Ask them to pack in the housemates as soon as possible. If they need food, give them 90 bags of imported rice.

Femii Adesinaa: (With a visible smirk) Now, we can sit and watch the lazy youth tweet about how enormous Diana’s boobs are, how razz Lateef is, and they will hurl insults at each other over the eviction of their favourite housemates, borrow money to buy airtime to vote every week, and go about erecting billboards and soliciting votes for their preferred participants. Let’s watch them clash online and block each other while we do our thing.

NSA: Alooter continua, Comrades!

(Rounds of applause and cheers till light fades.)

Education / Disquiet As NANS President Refuses To Relinquish Power, 8 Months After Tenure Ex by olanshile2016(m): 2:02pm On May 17, 2020
Disquiet as NANS president refuses to relinquish power, 8 months after tenure expiration

… It’s nobody’s business – Bamidele Akpan

NEWS DIGEST – There is palpable anger and discontentment among key stakeholders of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) over its President Bamidele Danielson’s continued stay in office after his tenure has expired.
The New Digest reports that Mr Danielson, who emerged NANS president during the August 10, 2018 convention in Abuja, has been in office for a year and eight months, against the stipulated 1-year tenure of office.
The stakeholders, News Digest gathered have continued to shudder at the president’s refusal to conduct elections, alleging that the recent turn of events at the apex students’ body was orchestrated by the President and his co-allies.
Speaking with the News Digest recently, a NANS stakeholder, Yusuf Lawal, decried how the present executives have overstayed their tenure in office.
According to him, although it is unacceptable constitutionally, the trend has become the norm over the years.
Mr Lawal explained that the first step in the transition process of NANS is the pre-convention which is not the prerogative of the President, but that of the Senate President.
He lamented that while the Senate President’s attention had been called severally to conduct the pre-convention, he refused, saying that the President had ordered him to delay the pre-convention for some reasons.
However, following pressures mounted from several quarters, according to Mr Lawal, they held the pre-convention on March 13 in Enugu.
Also speaking, a former Vice President of NANS and presidential aspirant at the 2018 elections, SA Lukman, stressed that it is unconstitutional to overstay in office, lamenting how subsequent administrations had made it a tradition to stay in office beyond their tenures.
He reiterated that ‘NANS Constitution clearly spells out that a President’s tenure is one academic session, which may not even be full 12 calendar months.
Mr Lukman, therefore, faulted the executive for allowing the Senate and its leadership usurp its power to call for a convention as well as its full responsibility to be in charge of the transition.
S.A Lukman believed that to discourage tenure overstaying in NANS, Convention planning committee should be inaugurated right after the emergence of a new executive to start planning for the next transition.
He added that the Committee should be dominated by legitimate students most of whom are SUG Presidents who would not be mobilized for NYSC before he or she concludes the assignment given to him by Nigerian Students.
“Then we may have an effective transition at expiration of Constitution stipulated tenure of office for NANS leadership,” he concluded.
Speaking in the same vein, Umar Farouq, chairman of Kaduna NANS joint campus committee, said: “While a single tenure of one session, that is a year, is spelt in NANS constitution, executives spending over a year in office has become a sad tradition over the years.”
Umar Farouq, however, faulted the constitution as being outdated and not up to date.
According to him, “a lot has to be done. NANS Charter of demands is moribund and need review, the condition still carries 19 states or so against the 36 states we currently have.
It also carries 3 zonal structures against the 4 zones in place now, so, if the constitution can be amended to suit modern realities then it will go a long way to ensure constitutionalism in the movement’s process.”
He also said the reason for the persistence of the trend is the absence of popular participation among Nigeria Students, saying: “If Nigerian students are financial members of the Union, it will increase more participation and encourage scrutiny of the leadership.
“Currently, Nigerian students are not financial members of NANS, because their local unions don’t pay capitation dues,” he regretted.
Ibrahim Kabiru Dallah, a former NANS official, also said, “To curb the trend, elected leadership should be mandated to take an oath of office with either Qur’an or Bible. If not, they would continue to be spending more than a stipulated 1 year in the Constitution and Chatter of Demand.”
When the New Digest contacted President Danielson on the expiration of his tenure, he said the decision to hold convention does not concern “anybody”, stating there are more pressing issues than the convention at the moment.
A former President of the Union, Tijani Usman, however, revealed that except for the COVID-19 pandemic, the elections would have held.
“We have the election steering committee in place and for the Pandemic, we should have had an election about two months ago” he noted.

THE TIME TO TALK
By Olanshile Olalekan

Shall we, at this moment
Do away briefly with the pinging phones
Can we, for the meantime halt
The prattles, banters and hilarious comics online
To reminisce and have a candid confabulation
On the heart-wrenching manner, we live.
Can we have a matter-of-fact conversation
That calls for sober reflection.
So if you happen to be a willing discussant
Take a seat and let's talk

Let's talk about the debased era of humanity
Where fellow humans are ostracized
Marginalized and victimized,
On the basis of ;
Colour, race, religion,
Sexual orientation and gender.

Let us talk about the religious fanatics,
Bigots and the monomaniac extremists
Who have, since long ago, said goodbye to tolerance
And chant passionately, "death to adherents of other faith"
Letting it slip from their memory
The fact that we are all human
Before beliefs set us apart

Fellow discussers,
Let's also talk about the greedy capitalist
Who, in the quest of satisfying their insatiable avarice,
Have become monsters with no milk of humanity
They profiteer from wars, viral diseases and
Sales of harmful illegal drugs

Do not let us forget
To talk about rogue government officials
Who are only interested in stashing the nation's commonwealth
In foreign bank accounts
They are insouciant to the numerous woes
Of the people. They loot with reckless abandon
While the nation groans and languishes in austere

Let's also talk about
The revered people of the pulpit
Cloak in the garbs of the saints
Preying on the poor congregation
And persuade them to be steadfast
For their reward is in heaven

I wish the whole days is ours
So we can talk about the dysfunctional world we live in
And the normalization of
Bizarre abnormalities
But we are preoccupied with many commitment
Including social media
Where we 'lol' away
Any attempt to initiate
A frank tete-a-tete
But I'll keep the hope alive
That one day
We shall sit under the
Large indulgent full yellow moon
In communal of brotherhoods
And that will be the time to talk.

Education / Oyo NANs Vow To Shut Down UI Over Expulsion Of Student Leaders by olanshile2016(m): 8:49pm On Jun 21, 2019
The Oyo Joint Campus Committee of the National Association of Nigeria Students(NANS) in conjunction with Alliance of Nigeria Students Against Neo-liberal Attacks (ANSA) has embarked on a Save Ui project to protest the dictatorial and gestapo methods being used by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan ,Prof. Abel Olayinka in Expelling Student activists, Aderemi Ojo, Kunle Adebajo, Philip Olatinwo and others who criticized the school's maladministration as well as The unlawful ban placed on any student association in the school for the past three years, Below is the Press Statement By the Oyo State NANS chairman, Asubiojo Olajuwon

PRESS RELEASE ON UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN

If we fight, we may win. But if we fail to fight, we have lost already.

It is no longer news that things are not rosy with Nigeria’s premier University, especially as it relates to student rights, fair representation and welfare. The University of Ibadan has since May 30, 2017 outlawed all students’ union activities and subsequently rusticated student leaders for participating in a peaceful protest on democracy day that year.

Greatest Uites, the details of these issues have been carefully analyzed by major stakeholders from within and outside the university, all coming to one conclusion – that the actions of the University portray great intolerance for dissent, or any form of confrontation.

This, is unacceptable and goes against every standard of fundamental human rights, morality and intellectual freedom. It is expected that a tertiary institution, especially one of great repute like the University of Ibadan will hold these values in high esteem and would not be found compromising globally accepted standards of intellectual freedom and fundamental rights.

The National Association of Nigerian Students is the umbrella body of all students in the state and as such, it is our responsibility to not only condemn such acts, but intervene where necessary to restore quality student representation to all institutions within the state and to seek relief to victimized student leaders.

WHY DOES THIS CONCERN YOU?

As a fresh or stale student, you may wonder if this has anything to do with you or your studentship. Why should you care about any students’ union or its leaders?

First, the laws governing all universities in Nigeria provides for adequate student representation before any major decision that affects students is made. However, the university management seems to be less concerned with carrying students along, so as to implement several policies that are unfriendly to students such as increment in school fees, introduction of illegal levies, ban on motorcycles and several other unsavory policies without considering its effects on students’ welfare.

Also, many of the rusticated student leaders are just like you, ordinary students. However, they saw the need to fight for you, to represent your interests and to ensure your rights are protected. They tried to do this at all cost, and are being victimized by the university authorities for it. They deserve not just your empathy but your action.

OUR DEMANDS

Unconditional restoration of an independent students’ union in the university of Ibadan, effective immediately the 2018/2019 academic session resumes on June 15, 2019.
Unconditional reinstatement of Ojo Aderemi and other rusticated student leaders to enable them register for the 2018/2019 academic session.

A stay on the implementation of all anti-student policies made without proper consultation with student leaders(N 6,500 technology fee and others), until a students’ union is restored.
A commitment from the university authorities to ensure effective student leadership and representation in the university.

A commitment from the university authorities to improve the welfare conditions of students on campus.
We have attempted to dialogue with the Vice chancellor of the university to no avail and will continue to do so. However, we remain resolute in ensuring our demands are met. We call on all stakeholders, student leaders, concerned and interested students within and outside the university to join us in putting pressure on the University management through a public campaign that begins on Wednesday, June 19, 2019. Details will be communicated in subsequent releases.
Aluta continua, Victoria ascerta!

Chairman,
National Association of Nigerian Students,
Oyo State.
