A number of inmates have been killed after soldiers stationed at the Kirikiri Medium Prison, Lagos were called in to quell a riot which broke among inmates of the prison on Friday, an eyewitness said. It was learnt from a source who pleaded anonymity that a protest against the seizure of a ceiling fan belonging to an inmate degenerated into the riot which might have claimed the lives of a number of the prisoners. Our source, who witnessed the incident, said the shooting started around 1.30pm. He said, “Someone brought in a ceiling fan for an inmate referred to as the ‘general-overseer’ of the prison’s Christian denomination. But the fan was seized by the officer in-charge of the prisons, who also allegedly ordered the inmate detained. “The inmate said he was the owner of the ceiling fan and only sent it out of the prison for repairs.” According to this source, the inmate was later released after protests by his colleagues who felt he was being unjustly punished. But the situation was said to have degenerated beyond control, necessitating the intervention of soldiers at the prisons. “By the time the inmate was released, the other prisoners had started throwing stones at windows and getting violent. The soldiers shot sporadically at the inmates as they ran into their cells, but many of them were hit,” our source said. As of the time of filing this report, there was no confirmation on the actual number of prisoners killed but our source claimed to have seen the dead bodies of a number of inmates and some injured prisoners with bullet wounds being transported to the hospital within the prison. But the spokesperson for the Nigerian Prisons Service, Mr. Ope Fatinikun, told our correspondent on the phone that there was indeed a riot at the prison, which he claimed was not violent. He said, “No inmate was shot at, but 12 of them who sustained minor injuries have been given treatment. “If anybody tells you he saw dead bodies of shot inmates, he should provide pictures. We have passed that stage something like that could not have happened without someone getting a picture.http://www.punchng.com/news/riot-at-kirikiri-prisons-inmates-feared-dead/

Hi guys,I just come about dz article online nd I think it wil b hlpful 2 u............. ..... SLEEPING WITH YOUR PHONE ON CHARGE COULD MAKE YOU FAT It may be wise to unplug once you’ve hit the sheets, especially if you’re trying to watch your figure. Scientists in Spain have found that the artificial light emitted from the screens of phones, tablets, televisions and laptops inhibits the production of a hormonethat combats obesity. Melatonin, which is present in plants, animals and humans, regulates sleep patterns and boosts metabolism. If you’re sleeping with a buzzing monitor, then the production of the hormone will be disrupted, slowing your metabolism and making you susceptible to weight gain. Professor Ahmad Agil, who led the study, told the Independentthat ‘artificial lighting during the night…reduces the levels of endogenous melatonin,’ meaning the bodies organisms fail to produce as much. I wouldn’t worry too much though. Your phone’s screen probably switches off when you’re not using it – whether it’s charged or nothttp://www.informationng.com/2014/10/sleeping-with-your-phone-on-charge-could-make-you-fat.html

The minister of health, prof Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Wednesday said Nigeria had already donated $3.5m as part of its intervention in the affected countries. Chukwu said the sum was made up of $500,000 to each of the countries and the balance to the common ECOWAS Fund for the disease. He also said 591 health practitioners had volunteered to join the international force that would go to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to help in the containment of the Ebola Virus Disease. He said the volunteers registered with his ministry at three points in Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt. Chukwu said this while speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan. He said that he had already told a recent meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on EVD of Nigeria’s readiness to help the three countries. He said, “I informed the United Nations General Assembly that the President has already directed the Federal Ministry of Health to train and send health personnel to these three countries in the area of special laboratory work to strengthen capacity in those countries. “I also informed them that as part of Nigeria’s contributions to the international team that will be set up to tackle Ebola Virus Disease in those countries, already Nigeria volunteers from different health professions have been registering with us, willing to join the international force that will go to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to help out with the containment. “As of now, 591Nigerians have already registered with us in three registries we opened in Lagos, Abuja Port Harcourt.” The minister however said there were certain conditions to be met before the volunteers would be allowed to leave the country. He said the first step was for President Goodluck Jonathan to approve their journey and mission and that the volunteers would be properly trained according to Nigeria’s standards, which, he said, was fairly high. Chukwu said he also told the meeting, which was called to review the global situation on the disease that Nigeria is now Ebola-free. He said the country had had 19 cases with seven deaths contrary to the 20 cases being reported by the foreign media. “Presently there is no single case of active Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria, no single contact that is presently under surveillance in any part of the country,” he declared. He said the ban on repatriation of corpses as well as inter-state movement of corpses was still in force, adding that the ban remained except where approval had been granted by the Minister of Health.http://www.punchng.com/news/nigeria-donates-3-5m-to-liberia-others/

The first person to be diagnosed with Ebola within the US has died, Texas hospital officials have said. Thomas Duncan, who caught the virus in his native Liberia, was being kept in isolation in a Dallas hospital and receiving experimental drugs. Earlier the US announced new security procedures at entry points to check travellers for symptoms of the virus. More than 3,000 people have died in West Africa in the worst Ebola outbreak yet. While Duncan was the first person to be diagnosed within the US, three American aid workers and a photojournalist contracted the virus in Liberia. “It is with profound sadness and heartfelt disappointment that we must inform you of the death of Thomas Eric Duncan this morning at 7:51 am,” a spokesman said in a statement. The news came shortly after US Secretary of State John Kerry urged all nations to boost their response to combat the virus. “More countries can and must step up,” he said in a joint press conference with his British counterpart Philip Hammond. The US has pledged as many as 4,000 troops to the region, while the UK is sending 750 military personnel to Sierra Leone. Duncan, a Liberian national, tested positive in Dallas, Texas, on 30 September, 10 days after arriving on a flight from Monrovia via Brussels. After going to hospital with symptoms, he told them he had been to Liberia but was sent home with antibiotics. Four days later, he was placed in isolation and given an experimental drug to treat Ebola, but his condition continued to worsen. Following Duncan’s diagnosis, the first case of contagion outside that continent was confirmed in Spain, where a nurse who treated an Ebola victim in Madrid contracted the virus herself. Ebola spreads through contact with the bodily fluids of someone who has the virus and the only way to stop an outbreak is to isolate those who are infected. Earlier on Wednesday, US officials announced travellers from Ebola-affected countries will face increased security scrutiny at American airports. The Department of Homeland Security has ordered agents at airports and other ports to “observe” arrivals for potential signs of Ebola infection. The new security measures, rolled out by the Transportation Security Administration, will reportedly take effect this weekend or early next week.http://www.punchng.com/news/us-ebola-patient-thomas-duncan-dies-in-hospital/ nd dont 4get dat 4 ppl av been quarantined in Spain!
