Following suit, Mr. Jide Ogunluyi took the stage to deliver his keynote address on 'Closing the Gap.' He emphasized the importance of reaching a level where opportunities seek out individuals, highlighting the significance of self-development and proactive engagement with the world.

The panel discussion featured three remarkable individuals - Mayowa Akinleye, Akeem Adebomojo, and Ariyo Adeoba - who shared insights on both online and offline opportunities available to Igede youths. Their expertise and experiences provided attendees with practical knowledge and inspiration.

PoliticsNigerians, Other Africans Elect Thieves But Want Them To Act Like Jesus. by olavictors(op): 12:21pm On Dec 10, 2023
Patrick Lumumba, popular Kenyan lawyer and activist, says Nigerians and other Africans elect thieves as leaders, expecting them to act like Jesus Christ.

Citing biblical example of how the crowd supported the release of notorious thief Barabbas while calling for the crucifixion of Jesus, Mr Lumumba said Africans are attracted to thieves.

“Africans, for some reason, are attracted to thieves. Africa, for some reason, is attracted to men and women who can’t serve and when they are not served they complain.

“When Africans are told choose you now whom we shall release, Jesus of Nazareth or Barabbas, they say release Barabbas and when he behaves like Barabbas, they say why are you not behaving like Christ,” Mr Lumumba said.

Mr Lumumba, who once served as director of the Kenyan anti-corruption commission, said this in his speech on Monday at The Platform, an annual programme organised by Poju Oyemade, the senior pastor and founder of The Covenant Nation.

Mr Lumumba berated Africans for electing the worst amongst them to be their leaders, saying “Africa is only going to realise its potential when in all areas, by dint of choice, we enable our best men and women to serve in different areas.”

“Most of Africa is suffering because we do not have democracies. We have kakistocracies and kakistocracy is government by our very worst. This is what we must deal with and this is what we must say. Who do we elect into our public offices?” said Mr Lumumba.

Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country with an estimated population of over 200 million.

Mr Lumumba’s statement comes as the outcome of Nigerian last presidential election which Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is being challenged by opposition parties, while a wave of coup sweeps through the continent.

Military juntas in the last three years have truncated democratic governments in some African countries, including Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Sudan, and most recently Niger Republic, and Gabon, citing rife corruption, insecurity and increased poverty.

PoliticsNigerian Electorate Categorized by olavictors(op): 2:16pm On Apr 05, 2022
NIGERIAN ELECTORATE CATEGORIZED

It is a normal thing for Nigerians to blame the woes of our nation on bad leadership; leaders who did not hijack power but were elected, and many were reelected by majority of the citizens. Illiteracy keeps reducing by the year in Nigeria but our level of education has refused to reflect in our election results. Here in Nigeria, we vote for those who have nothing to offer mostly, cuius culpa? We should blame the electorate, yes entirely. Electorate are qualified voters while voters are those that actually cast ballot in an election, as it is, voter is a subset of electorate. I have witnessed several elections in Nigeria since 1992 therefore I can say one or two things about the Nigerian electorate under the categories below.

The Dibo ko sebes. Dibo ko sebe means ‘vote then cook soup’ in Yoruba language, it is used to describe vote buying and selling. Nigerian politicians do not really need to rig elections anymore, all they must do is to give money to anyone that vote actually vote for them, eventually, the highest bidder will win the election. Unfortunately, this is the largest category among Nigerian voters for now. They could sell their vote for as low as #5000 (around $10) to vote against common sense .The conversers will argue that the money they are offering you is like a win-win: there is no assurance that your desired candidate will do well and you are getting paid to vote – very despicable. Vote buying and selling is not new to Nigerian politics, just that the amount of money they now offer has greatly increased. The largest population of Nigeria falls below the poverty line; therefore they are easily swayed by paltry sums. Dib ko sebe has helped to keep unrepentantly incompetent hands power all over Nigeria. It is widely believed in Nigeria that the leaders love to keep the populace in abject poverty to keep vote buying easy with little sums.

The Resolutes. A lower percentage of Nigerians vote for the candidate of their choice without allowing any dissenting voice; they follow their candidate to the end. In this vein, yours truly has been an ardent supporter of Asiwaju Segun Oni right from time because of Asiwaju’s leadership prowes. Unfortunately there are some issues with this category of voters. First is that many of them believed in the wrong candidate for sentimental reasons like religion, ethnicity, political party gender bias etc. secondly, many of them believed in the wrong candidate because of propaganda, lies and deceit. For example, some Nigerians believed that a Buhari government would rid Nigeria of insurgency even when he publicly said a fight against boko haram is a fight against the North. Before Buhari, we were only facing insurgency in 3 northern states, but now, insurgency, banditry and civil unrest has engulfed Nigeria. Another problem with this category is that their votes can be easily rigged due to the bridge provided by the vote sellers discussed earlier on.

The spectators. The spectators are a large chunk of the electorate, some of them do not even have voter’s card, some do possess the card but they will not vote. Surprisingly, almost everyone in this category is either educated or at least well-to-do. Some of them believe that their vote won’t count, some believe that voting or not voting has no effect on them, some complain of time, some complain of location, some complain of… just myriad of reasons but eventually they don’t vote. This doesn’t mean that they don’t have a good choice among the candidates; it just means that they are voting against their own choice indirectly. Some people were forced to become spectators by the antics of our politicians. For example, in the last gubernatorial election in Osun state, many eligible voters were allegedly disenfranchised because they wanted to vote against the powers that be. Some Igbo have also accused our electoral body of not releasing their voter’s card that they applied for in Lagos.
The foreigners. I spent some weeks visiting the capital of Zamfara and Katsina states in 2018, the total number of people I encountered throughout the states were just too small that I went to enquire where everyone went. I had to ask because Katsina turned in 1.4 million votes during the 2015 general election while Zamfara turned in 761 thousand votes, very large number compared to most of the southern states. My friend who was a resident of one of the states told me that a chunk of the voters are foreigners but they are registered to vote here in Nigeria, they do come during elections to cast ballot. He also said many citizens are fleeing the northern state to other parts of the country because of the shameful security situation of the land. I will also categorize the underage voters as a part of the foreigners because they are not supposed to be part of the election but they vote to jack up the numbers.

The English politician Charles James Fox said ‘all political power is a trust”, and we often say ‘national leaders reflect national character, in other words, we have been electing the kind of leaders who are our direct reflection, or better still we have been electing the kind of leaders that we deserve! But do we really deserve this misrule? Are we that bad? I for one will not agree. We are like a prisoner under gag. 2023 is another opportunity to speak loud and clear; I pray we get it right this time.

PoliticsEkiti2022: A Choice Amongst Evils by olavictors(op): 12:22pm On Mar 31, 2022
*EKITI2022: A choice amongst evils* by Ola Olusola

Is there any Nigerian politician worth my time? The answer is an emphatic no; I have concluded they are all united in running the country aground via senseless corruption and outright stealing. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo hosted all commonwealth summit in Nigeria in the year 2003 during which he must choose between two wrongs; first was inviting the president of Zimbabwe and the second was not inviting the president of Zimbabwe. The president in question was Robert Mugabe, a freedom fighter turned tyrant, he was suspended in March 2002 from the commonwealth because of a shambolic presidential election in Zimbabwe. On live TV, I remember watching Obasanjo saying he would choose the lesser wrong by not inviting Mugabe, he explained that though the two choices are wrong, he opted for the less wrong. So far, the coming 2022 gubernatorial election in Ekiti has thrown several politicians into the boxing ring amongst them is Engr. Olusegun Oni. He is a former governor of the state, he is the most decent among all the party candidates for so many reasons.

Oni is an Omoluabi. He is doesn’t use violence to achieve his aim in sharp contrast to most Nigerian politicians. I remember how ignorant citizens were using vulgar words on him as a sitting governor on live broadcast, the interviewers would usually tried to terminate the calls but Oni would stop the interviewers from doing such, he allowed them to vent their anger and grievances. That is a direct opposite of what a typical Nigerian politician would do; they’d either terminate such call and spend time on ruminating on how to punish the caller or speak back at such caller in the ‘language they understand’. I won’t forget how students of college of education, Ikere were teargased and killed during the first tenure of Fayose, but students protests under Oni did not result into fatalities. Most Nigerian politicians work with thugs but Oni is an exception and that is why he has been cheated several times in the past. Let me give you just three of the occasions he has been cheated in the past. He won election as the national vice chairman of PDP in 2012 but was denied the office in 2013. He was denied a level playing ground during the APC primary in 2018. He was wrongly sacked in the APC by his own ward Chairman. None of the above devilish orchestrations resulted in violence because Oni is an Omoluabi.

Oni has no godfather. One of the reasons Nigeria has refused to grow is godfatherism. Godfatherism is not localized in Nigeria, many first world nations do practice godfatherism but the Nigerian version of godfatherism is despotic, inhibitory and satanic. God fathers are only expected to advice and support the government of their godsons or goddaughters, they can even provide financial help to their godson and receive only words of thanks in return and nothing more. But in Nigeria, we know of a man who was only a governor for 8 years, he hasn’t been employed since leaving over a decade ago, but he received money in bullion vans on the eve of a general election. It is obvious that such politician has been in power by proxy. No one would be able to order Oni around like a schoolboy if Ekiti people would allow him govern them. Every Nigerian politician want to remain in power by proxy and fix only their cronies in all available positions not minding if they are fit.

Oni truly loves Ekiti. His reign witnessed the creation of the first private university in Ekiti state and he donated 100 million naira Ekiti money to encourage the project. Hundreds of people are now employed in the institution and its subsidiaries. I know Oni didn’t create Afe Babalola University but he strongly supported it. He ensured due process for all government contracts and has the track record of awarding Ekiti contracts to worthy Ekiti contractors. He gave sufficient scholarship and bursary to Ekiti students without having to know anyone who can push your file. He empowered Ekiti students with laptops that were customized for learning and fed the students in the school without bogus allocation. He achieved a lot before his government was toppled by the court. The increase of tuition for EKSU students was in order, if it was an aberration, the government of Fayemi would have reversed to the previous tuition to score political goal. Though Fayemi government gave Ektit students deceptive reduction on their tuition they increased all other payments to make up for the fake reduction.

When presented with a compulsory choice among evils, choose the lowest evil. Those who were close to me at the buildup to the 2015 general election can testify that I advised them to vote for Goodluck Jonathan, not because Jonathan was doing well but because I know Buhari would do worse, and I have been proved right because the government of Buhari has been a nightmare…I am glad I never voted him. In the same vein, I am not saying Oni is an angel but he is obviously the best among all the contestants. I urge Ektit citizens to vote him as their next governor.

Family13 Things You Should Give Up If You Want To Be Successful by olavictors(op): 10:32am On Aug 26, 2018
Somebody once told me the definition of hell: “On your last day on earth, the person you became will meet the person you could have become.” — Anonymous

Sometimes, to become successful and get closer to the person we can become, we don’t need to add more things — we need to give up on some of them. There are certain things that are universal, which will make you successful if you give up on them, even though each one of us could have a different definition of success.

1. Give Up On The Unhealthy Lifestyle
“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” — Jim Rohn
If you want to achieve anything in life, everything starts here. First you have to take care of your health, and there are only two things you need to keep in mind:
1. Healthy Diet
2. Physical Activity
Small steps, but you will thank yourself one day.

2. Give Up The Short-term Mindset
“You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” — Mae West
Successful people set long-term goals, and they know these aims are merely the result of short-term habits that they need to do every day.
These healthy habits shouldn’t be something you do; they should be something you embody.
There is a difference between: “Working out to get a summer body” and “Working out because that’s who you are.”

3. Give Up On Playing Small
“Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone, and as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” - Marianne Williamson
If you never try and take great opportunities, or allow your dreams to become realities, you will never unleash your true potential. The world will never benefit from what you could have achieved. So voice your ideas, don’t be afraid to fail, and certainly don’t be afraid to succeed.

4. Give Up Your Excuses
“It’s not about the cards you’re dealt, but how you play the hand.”
― Randy Pausch.
Successful people know that they are responsible for their life, no matter their starting point, weaknesses, and past failures.
Realising that you are responsible for what happens next in your life is both frightening and exciting, when you do, that becomes the only way you can become successful, because excuses limit and prevent us from growing personally and professionally.
Own your life; no one else will.

5. Give Up The Fixed Mindset
“The future belongs to those who learn more skills and combine them in creative ways.” ― Robert Greene, Mastery
People with a fixed mindset think their intelligence or talents are simply fixed traits, and that talent alone leads to success — without hard work. They’re wrong.
Successful people know this. They invest an immense amount of time on a daily basis to develop a growth mindset, acquire new knowledge, learn new skills and change their perception so that it can benefit their lives.
Remember, who you are today, it’s not who you have to be tomorrow.

6. Give Up Believing In The “Magic Bullet.”
“Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better” — Émile Coué
Overnight success is a myth. Successful people know that making small continual improvement every day will be compounded over time, and give them desirable results.
That is why you should plan for the future, but focus on the day that’s ahead of you, and improve just 1% every day.

7. Give Up Your Perfectionism
“Shipping beats perfection.” — Khan Academy’s Development Mantra
Nothing will ever be perfect, no matter how much we try.
Fear of failure (or even fear of success) often prevents us from taking an action and putting our creation out there in the world. But a lot of opportunities will be lost if we wait for the things to be right.
So “ship,” and then improve (that 1%).

8. Give Up Multi-tasking
“You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks.” ― Winston S. Churchill
Successful people know this. That’s why they choose one thing and then beat it into submission. No matter what it is — a business idea, a conversation, or a workout.
Being fully present and committed to one task, is indispensable.

9. Give Up Your Need to Control Everything
“Some things are up to us, and some things are not up to us.” — Epictetus, Stoic philosopher
Differentiating these two is important.
Detach from the things you cannot control, and focus on the ones you can, and know that sometimes, the only thing you will be able to control is your attitude towards something.
Remember, nobody can be frustrated while saying “Bubbles” in an angry voice.

10. Give Up On Saying YES To Things That Don’t Support Your Goals
“He who would accomplish little must sacrifice little; he who would achieve much must sacrifice much; he who would attain highly must sacrifice greatly.” — James Allen
Successful people know that in order to accomplish their goals, they will have to say NO to certain tasks, activities, and demands from their friends, family, and colleagues.
In the short-term, you might sacrifice a bit of instant gratification, but when your goals come to fruition, it will all be worth it.

11. Give Up The Toxic People
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
― Jim Rohn
People we spend the most time with, add up to who we become.
There are people who are less accomplished in their personal and professional life, and there are people who are more accomplished than us. If you spend time with those who are behind you, your average will go down, and with it, your success.
But if you spend time with people who are more accomplished than you, no matter how challenging that might be, you will become more successful.
Take a look at around you, and see if you need to make any changes.

12. Give Up Your Need To Be Liked
“The only way to avoid pissing people off is to do nothing important.” — Oliver Emberton
Think of yourself as a market niche.
There will be a lot of people who like that niche, and there will be individuals who don’t. And no matter what you do, you won’t be able to make the entire market like you.
This is entirely natural, and there’s no need to justify yourself.
The only thing you can do is to remain authentic, improve and provide value every day, and know that the growing number of “haters” means that you are doing important things.

13. Give Up Your Dependency on Social Media & Television
“The trouble is, you think you have time” — Jack Kornfield
Impulsive web browsing and television watching are diseases of today’s society.
These two should never be an escape from your life or your goals.
Unless your goals depend on either, you should minimise (or even eliminate) your dependency on them, and direct that time towards things that can enrich your life.

Happy Sunday.
