Aare Ona Kakanfo was a title given to the generalissimo, the war general during the old Oyo Empire. An Aare Ona Kakanfo would lead battles, fight wars, mobilise and train “soldiers” and conquer the enemies.
The title of Aare Ona Kakanfo was introduced hundreds of years ago to the Yoruba country by King Ajagbo, who ruled over 700 years ago. The introduction of the title was informed by the need to fortify the ancient, pre-colonial army of the old Oyo Empire which at one time could boast of over 100,000 horsemen. In recent times, the selection seem to have been informed by other considerations the chief of which is the acceptability of the leader among a large section of the people of the South West and such a leader being accepted as worthy Yoruba leadership by other nationalities in Nigeria.
The selection involves several rituals and there have been speculations that the last two Kakanfos did not complete the ritual circles. Samuel Johnson in his book treatise on the Kakanfo stated that the Kakanfos are always shaved, but the hair on the inoculated part is allowed to grow long, and when plaited, forms a tuft or sort of pigtail,’ adding that Kakanfos are generally ‘very stubborn and obstinate.
They have been more or less troublesome, due to the effect of the ingredients they were inoculated with. In war they carry no weapon but a weapon known as the King’s invincible staff.’ It is generally understood that they are to give way to no one not even to the King, their master. Hence, Kakanfos are never created in the capital but in any other town in the Kingdom ‘
Kakanfo is akin to a field marshal and is conferred upon the greatest soldier and tactician of the day. ‘By virtue of his office he is to go to war once in 3 years to whatever place the King named, and dead or alive, to return home a victor, or be brought home a corpse within three months’. Kakanfo usually has certain ensigns: The Ojijiko, and a cap made of the red feathers of the parrots tail, with a projection behind reaching as far down as the waist, an apron of leopards skin, and a leopard skin to sit on always the Asiso or pigtail and the Staff invincible.

BRIEF HISTORY
Kakanfo Ojo Aburumaku had no war to fight. He fomented a civil war in his native Ogbomoso which he then had a good sport of putting down with severity. Afterall, he was Aare Onakakanfo, the Supreme head of the Esos, the 70 military commanders who make the Yoruba warrior caste.

Kakanfo Kurumi was even more spectacular. He insisted that the Aremo must die with the Alaafin according to tradition. His reputation as a warrior was legendary. He is portrayed in art as a no-nonsense nimble wit with a commanding presence. Aare Kurumi npe o, o londifa. Bifa ba fore ti Aare o ba fore nko? There was no excuse for refusing a call from the generalissimo. In a surgical commando strike, Ibadan special forces attacked at night his troops in Iseyin and wiped out the entire rear brigade. All of Kurumi’s five children who were company commanders died in that attack. Like his name, Aare Kurumi was ruined by death, indeed. I-k –u-r-u-m-i.
It must be acknowledged though that a few of the kakanfos had glorious tenures. Oyabi was based in the garrison town of Jabata. He kept off the internal strife of the kingdom with the wily Osorun Gaa killing the Alaafins in quick succession until the reign of Adegoolu who linked up with the military to destroy the prime minister. The Eso were lead into the city like Caesar did across the Rubicon River and Basorun Gaa was killed. Nontheless, Oyabi died rather young.
In Ibadan, the new city full of promise where Kakanfo Obadoke Latoosa had taken up residence, the scourge of the notorious slave dealer, Efunsetan Aniwura, was ended by the Aare Ona kakanfo. However, even he Latoosa was victim of the mystique of the office of supreme commander. Latoosa was confronted by a palace coup and in very dramatic circumstances, he committed suicide. He had a notorious slave according to history, who grew increasingly disrespectful of the generals. Latoosa did not curb this behaviour until the deputy commander, Balogun Ibikunle was insulted by the slave. Ibikunle could not believe his eyes when Latoosa asked the slave to state his side of the case like two equals squabbling. Ibikunle simply beheaded the idiot there and then.
Latoosa then asked Ibikunle if he was ready to take the sceptre of office, to which Ibikunle answered in the affirmative. There was no negative response from the other commanders present. Latoosa had overrated his own popularity. Depicted as an overbearing and brutally magnificent warrior who went about like a masquerade, he was stunned by the turn of events and swallowed poison. He simply laid down and covered himself like one in sleep. These and more are the intriguing story of Aare in the then old Oyo Empire.

Baghdad insisted the city and its province be returned, but matters came to a head when the Kurdish authorities expanded their referendum to include Kirkuk. To the Iraqi central government, that looked like Kurdish expansionism. The city of more than 1 million is home to Arabs, Kurds and Turkmen, as well as Christians and Sunni and Shiite Muslims.
Kurdish officials accused the Iraqi army of carrying out a "major, multiprong attack," and reported heavy clashes on Kirkuk's outskirts, but a spokesman for Iraq's state-backed militias said they met little resistance.
By midday, federal forces had moved into several major oil fields north of the city, as well as its airport and an important military base, according to Iraqi commanders. Kurdish party headquarters inside Kirkuk had been abandoned.
The U.S., which has armed, trained and provided vital air support to both sides in their shared struggle against the Islamic State group, described Monday's events as "coordinated movements, not attacks," while bemoaning the dispute as a distraction against a common enemy. It said the limited exchange of fire was a "misunderstanding."
After initial reports of clashes in and around the city, it appeared by afternoon as though the vastly outnumbered Kurdish forces, known as the peshmerga, were pulling out with hardly a fight.
Local police stayed in place in Kirkuk as al-Abadi urged civil servants to remain at their posts. "We have only acted to fulfill our constitutional duty and extend the federal authority and impose security and protect the national wealth in this city," he said.
Brig. Gen. Bahzad Ahmed, a spokesman for Kurdish forces, said federal forces seized an oil and gas company and other industrial areas south of Kirkuk in fighting with Kurdish forces that caused "lots of casualties," without providing a number.
He said Iraqi forces have "burnt lots of houses and killed many people" south of the city. His claims could not be verified.
A spokesman for Iraq's state-sanctioned militias said they had "achieved all our goals" in retaking areas from Kurdish forces. Ahmed al-Assadi said federal forces came under fire from "some rebels" and returned fire. He did not say whether they suffered any casualties.
He said federal forces were deployed in the area of the K-1 military base, the Kirkuk airport and a number of oil fields and installations. The Iraqi military said it seized two major oil fields outside the city.
Al-Abadi has said the militias will remain outside the city. Al-Assadi said the Popular Mobilization Forces have not entered central Kirkuk, but Associated Press reporters saw Turkmen PMF militiamen taking up posts in the western part of the city.
Tensions have risen since the Kurdish referendum on independence, which was rejected by the central government, Turkey, Iran, and the United States.
Baghdad and the autonomous Kurdish region have long disagreed over sharing oil revenue and the status of Kirkuk and other places controlled by Kurdish forces but outside the self-ruled region.

1. ABIA:
Abia is an acronym derived from the name of the four main groups of people in the state as at the time it was formed in 1991: A ba B ende I suikwuato A fikpo
2. ADAMAWA:
This state was named after a warrior that conquered the region in the beginning of the 19th century. His name was Modibbo Adama Bin Ardo Hassan.
3. AKWA–IBOM:
Akwa Ibom is named after a river, the Qua Iboe (or Kwa Iboe) River.
4. ANAMBARA:
It was derived from the name of the Oma Mbal (Omambala)River (in Ibo, the native name of the river is Ànyịm Ọma Mbala).
5. BAUCHI:
There are three versions of how Bauchi got its name. One version says ‘Bauchi’ is Hausa word meaning the southern planks of Hausa land. Tribes living in the southern parts of the Hausa land were referred to as “kasashen bauchi” and
the area they lived in later came to be known simply as Bauchi.

Sebastian Kurz has claimed victory in Austria's national election and is on course to become the world's youngest leader.
The 31-year-old head of the right-leaning People’s Party topped the polls on Sunday.

Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe, has created a ministry to punish "rats" who make use of the cyberspace to attack his government.
Appointed as head of this new Cyber Security, Threat Detection, and Mitigation ministry is Patrick Chinamasa who is a former Finance minister.
Zimbabweans have joked about the development, claiming Chinamasa’s appointment makes him the “minister of WhatsApp and Facebook”.
However, Chinamasa's first job, it seems, is to get rid of, or regulate the use of Whatsapp and Facebook, raising serious concerns over freedom of expression, access to information and a clampdown on social media messaging.
Zimbabwe actually did, in fact, issue new rules on using WhatsApp, in the country. The rules order groups to be registered and for the administrator of the group to have government level clearance.
It can be argued that Mugabe issued these new rules in order to tone down the rate of inflation in the country via rumors but one can't but wonder if it isn't to maintain Mugabe's 37-year reign, so he could clinch another victory in 2018 presidential elections.

Pls guys, on Wednesday night there was this thunder that struck in my area, and almost all my electronic's appliances got spoilt, including my receiver SRT 4950E.
So I took it to a local electronic repairer, The repairer told me that it was the transformer that got burnt and he repaired it for me and the receiver started working again but the receiver is now selecting channels like the multi TV position galaxy and core is not showing, nigcomsat channels are not showing, my nta is showing but sp24 is not showing but when I connect my dish to my second receiver SRT 4669x all the aforementioned channels will be showing with high percentages including my sp24 56%

Am really glad that we young Kwarians are beginning to wake up from our slumbers.
