somtea: The thing is Iwant to buy d above named system.nd am stuck in the land of indecision if 2 spend d 120k to buy d mac or.pc, with similar specs brand new vn though this one is still very clean.I am personally biased towards Macs, so I will advise you to go for the Mac. I do however understand that support for Macs is not very good if you are based in Nigeria. I own a few Macs and some are quite old as I have mentioned before, and I have honestly never had a major issue with any of them. That is not to say that things don't go wrong because they do. My advise is, if you do decide to go for the Mac, do some research on how to maintain and optimise the use of your Mac. It should last you very much longer than a similarly specced pc. |
somtea: what is the average lifespn of a mac book pro?My daughter uses a 2006 macbook, while I use a 2008 macbook pro. They both still run like new. My 2008 macbook pro can run pes 2013, so I guess you should have no problems with yours. Handle and use your macbook properly and it can outlive you. |
The last time I post a thread about the possibility of Usain Bolt cheating, I received a a lot of abuse from my fellow Nairalanders. I wonder what nairalanders have to say now? Nine men in history have run the 100m in less than 9.8 seconds. The first, 25 years ago this summer, was Ben Johnson, running 9.79 to win the 1988 Olympic final in Seoul. We know how that one turned out: for a quarter of a century he was sport’s most famous shamed doper, until Lance Armstrong gave him a run for his money. It took more than a decade for the 9.8 barrier to be broken again. Here, in order, are the men to have done it (with the relevant notes beside their best times): - 9.79 – Maurice Greene – Has never tested positive. He has admitted paying Mexican discus thrower Angel Guillermo Heredia $10,000 – a payment the Mexican claims was for performance-enhancing drugs, but the American maintains was innocent, for ‘stuff’ for his training group. - 9.79 – Justin Gatlin – The 2004 Olympic champion was banned in 2001 for two years for testing positive for amphetamines. And then again in 2006 for four years for ‘testosterone or its precursor’. Back again, and running fast. Won bronze in London last summer. - 9.78 – Tim Montgomery – Admitted to testosterone and human growth hormone use – his once-world record mark has been stripped from the history books. - 9.78 – Nesta Carter – 27-year-old Jamaican who has claimed gold in the 4x100m relay at the past two Olympics. A training partner of Asafa Powell. - 9.72 – Asafa Powell – Confirmed that he failed a doping test on Sunday, but denies knowingly cheating. - 9.69 – Tyson Gay – Confirmed that he failed a doping test on Sunday: “I made a mistake. I don’t have a sabotage story, I don’t have lies… I basically put my trust in someone and I was let down.” - 9.69 – Yohan Blake – Tested positive for 4-Methyl-2-hexanamine in the 2009 World Championships – the substance is not on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s banned list, but the test led to his withdrawal from the event by the Jaimaican Amateur Athletic Association and he was among four to be given a three-month ban by his federation. - 9.58 – Usain Bolt Usain Bolt is clean. We cannot stress that enough. He has never tested positive, he has never been accused of taking stimulants. He has an unblemished record. His performances have brought huge joy around the world, and taken the breath away. And yet, what as fans we are being asked to believe is that Usain Bolt is more than a tenth of a second quicker than all of his rivals, the majority of whom are tainted in some way or another by doping. A tenth of a second might as well be a lifetime in the 100m sprint. It’s certainly metres on the track. You have two options: you can accept that some of Bolt's fiercest opponents are doping to keep pace with him and still getting blasted away (which makes his achievements in one light greater than ever) – or you concede that, in a sport where past disappointments have bludgeoned cynicism into us, it looks suspicious. Is Bolt tarnished by association? Among those guilty are some of his international team-mates and friends. That, eerily, is how the Lance Armstrong’s reputation began to unravel, when the likes of Tyler Hamilton and Floyd Landis, who had ridden with him on the Tour de France, were exposed as cheats. It is awkward, of course, to have the debate. One can only stress again that Usain Bolt is clean, unblemished, accused of nothing. But as Bill Simmons wrote on Grantland in February, the question of whether what you’re watching in sport is miraculous or mutant has to be addressed in some way. We have seen too many scandals to blindly celebrate all winners, yet as fans looking in, we have no proof of wrongdoing. As Simmons put it: “I believe we need to fix this disconnect between our private conversations and our public ones. Cheating in professional sports is an epidemic. Wondering about the reasons behind a dramatically improved performance, or a dramatically fast recovery time, shouldn't be considered off-limits for media members. We shouldn't feel like scumbags bringing this stuff up. It's part of sports.” Cycling knows this. As Christopher Froome, a man never implicated in a doping scandal, destroys the field at the Tour de France, the inevitable questions follow. Like a girlfriend cheated on time and again, it is hard to trust that this time it will be different. Clean or otherwise, Bolt will surely feel the consequences of Gay and Powell failing tests. And if, heaven forfend, it one day transpired that Bolt had cheated, it's hard to see how the sport, which his charm and unforgettable performances have played such a part in helping to save, could ever recover. http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/world-of-sport/usain-bolt-tainted-association-athletics-doping-scandal-074417614.html |
Yvete: Thanks. It's a Macbook Pro OS X - version 10.6.8. I got it as a gift and did a software update. Am I supposed to upgrade it to a current version-if any? Everything works excellently except the audio through the Mini-displayport. Should I try another brand of HDMI cables? Thanks.Your mac is up to date.If your MacBook Pro is pre mid 2010, no hdmi cable would work for audio. You will need to look for a separate source for audio. |
ahmmyreal: i had lion on it. i could also re install lion via the same procedure you mentioned above but i must have purchased lion from appstore to be able to re install it because i would be required to login with my apple id.Give IshopA a call. Ask them if they can help you install a copy of Mountain Lion onto your system for a nominal fee. telephone: 01-628 2561 mobile: 07064444415-8 |
ahmmyreal: i know that already. i dont have mac os dvd to re install it.Where you using Mountain Lion before your Mac crashed? If you where, you should be able to re install Mountain Lion without the use of disks. You do need to be connoted to the internet though. Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys. If you’re not connected to the Internet, choose a network from the Wi-Fi menu (in the top-right corner of the screen). Select Reinstall OS X, and then click Continue. Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select your current OS X disk (in most cases, it is the only one available). To start the installation, click Install. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10763?viewlocale=en_US |
ahmmyreal: you talking about Recovery HD right? i have it.Hold down the option key while starting up your mac. The recovery HD should appear. Login into it, and re install your OS. |

ahmmyreal: that will be later things, i need to get the mac running first on any mac os version i could get my hands on.What model and age is your mac? To run mountain lion you need to have a minimum 2gigs of ram. If your Mac is later than 2010, it will already have a restore partion that you can boot from. |

Yvete: Hello, what is the best alternative to iphoto on Macbook pro? It freezes and takes forever to open up pictures. I need something similar to Mac's preview, but with the forward and back arrows for easy navigation. Any recommendations?1. Picasa is a good free alternative to iPhoto http://picasa.google.com/intl/en/ 2. What model is your Macbook pro? If it is older than mid 2010, then it will not support audio through the Mini-DisplayPort |

Seun: Do you know any apple certified technicians? Can you post their names and addresses? There is an istore at the ikeja mall, which is an authorised Apple reseller in Nigeria. They must surely have certified technicians there. I am also aware of iShopA.com based at 2 Yunusa adeniji Street, Ikeja Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. Getting Apple certification is relatively easy, inexpensive, and if i'm not mistaken I believe can now be done online. http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MA714Z/B/applecare-technician-training |
Seun: 16gb ram > 4gb ram.16gb of ram is overkill, and I believe a total waste of money. |
tdjeans: Hello,You can easily replace the keyboard. I alway advice people to use an apple certified technicians wherever possible, even in Nigeria. |
Dikachiii: Hi Please I need an urgent advice. I have a 2010 Macbook model 7,1 intel co two duo the battery is 10 hours and it supports 16gb ram. I'm contemplating maxing out the ram 2x8 gb = 16gb and 1tb hdd + 32 ssd. Do I use it like this or (maxed out) or should I sale it off and buy a macbook pro core i5 4gb ram and 500gb hdd? my macbook supports Mountain lion. please advice. It all depends on what exactly you are using your MacBook Pro for. Your 2010 model should be very capable of carrying out most tasks quite comfortably. Upgrading to the i5 model I think is unnecessary. Maxing out your 2010 MacBook Pro again might not be necessary, but again it all depends on what you intend to use it for. |
Dikachiii: Thanks a lot. Which screw drivers do I need for it?phillips 00 and a torx t6, they are very tiny screwdrivers. |
Dikachiii: Hi guys, please I have a macbook mid 2010. It has 2gb ram and 250gb hard drive. I bought 4 x 2 8gb ram and 750GB hd. Now I want to know if any of you guys can help me install the HD and ram I'm in Lagos. And will I lose all my apps?If you are installing a new HD, you will need to make a back up of your old one, and then transfer all your data to your new HD. Installing RAM and a new HD is not that difficult and at worst you can do it yourself. The site below gives you a step by step video guide on how to perform the install. Just select your model and follow the guide. http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/ |
wisepluto: Tnx @Op for this opportunity. I was developing mobile apps on a windows pc. It later crashed and I had to go for a Macbook pro...I have already partitioned the hard disk for both Mac OS and Windows 7 OS. But the challenge am currently faced with is that of the right drivers to enable all the functionality of windows on my mac. An example is the wireless lan which cannot detect any wifi within range. How best do I resolve this issue? Thanks in anticipation.@Wisepluto have you been able to resolve your issue? |
Maleeq: Really? I have used an ASUS machine from 2011 with that setup...on windows! Apple is simply "coining a trademark: Fusion Drive". oyb: dittoYou guys are missing the point. The technology is not new, but the way Apple have implemented it into the OS is. What the Fusion Drive is not: Do not confuse the Fusion Drive with a Cache or Hybrid drive. Cache drives, like Intel Smart Response Technology, are found in performance desktops as well as many of the latest ultrabooks. Caching uses a small amount of SSD or Flash storage (16GB to 32GB is common) to help speed up repeatable tasks like booting and waking from sleep. The cache drives are invisible to the user, and don't count as "real" storage. (1TB 5,400 hard drive + 32GB mSATA SSD yields 1TB of storage.) It's the same with self-contained Hybrid drives like the Seagate Momentus XT. The Fusion Drive shows as 1.12TB of storage space, which is the 1TB hard drive plus the storage from the 128GB Flash storage. You never have to manage it. The Fusion Drive is set up at the factory; you never have to fiddle with any settings. THE DRIVE AUTOMATICALLY MOVES often-used programs and files from the hard drive to the Flash storage and back, depending on how often you use an item. If you ever have to reinstall the operating system, OS X Mountain Lion (10. and future versions will automatically set up Fusion Drive for you, even if you need to reformat your main drive.http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2412726,00.asp |
'Keji :If you can find an Apple authorised service provider, they will replace the back cover for you free of charge. http://www.apple.com/support/macbook-bottomcase/ |
ger_gemam: @Op U doing a great Job here.. More Juice in your cabinet...We need someone to donate a MacBook Pro to Maleeq. After a few weeks with it, he will drop the windows format like a sack of potatoes. Repairing or replacing your G4 screen might be very tricky. As it is a model that is very out of date I'm not sure how readily available parts for it might be. There is a tutorial video on youtube on how to replace the screen. I suggest you try searching Amazon for replacement screens. I know someone who has used a Logitech Quickcam Vision pro for years on his powerbook G4 without any problems.I think amazon might be your best friend here again. Just do a search for webcams compatible with your Powerbook G4. In order to continue enjoying the many benefits the Mac OS architecture has to offer, I suggest your best option might be actually upgrading your mac to a newer model that is capable of smoothly running the latest OS. |
Apple has introduced the Fusion Drive to the world. Will PC manufactures catch on? |

Maleeq: Offtopic:Coincidence? $1bn. Nigerians sef. I have always believed that Apple will someday launch an official store in Nigeria. Our government should please try and get to grips with all the nonsense. We are driving away foreign investors. The masses, you and I, are bearing the brunt. |
akinlade 1: Pls can someone help me out with my MacBook pro problem?it always says kernel panick error and it will not come up at all atimes and atimes it will come up but I sense the problem is now getting too embarrassing everyday,so wut can I do now?In most cases, kernel panics are not caused by an issue with the Mac itself. They are most likely caused by an issue external to the Mac. If the kernel panic doesn't happen again within a few weeks, you don't need to troubleshoot further. To help avoid kernel panics, install all available software updates until Software Update reports "Your software is up to date". OS X updates improve the tolerance for external issues such as malformed network packets and so forth. For most kernel panics, updating your software is all you have to do. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US |
skp909: Where can I repair my macbook pro the mouse doesnot workIs it the track pad on your macbook pro giving you problems? The issue might be your battery. Try removing the battery. If the track pad works with the battery removed then you might just need a new battery. When the battery on older Macbook pros are reaching their end, they expand, thus pushing up against the track pad and causing track pad problems. |

and future versions will automatically set up Fusion Drive for you, even if you need to reformat your main drive.
