Job Summary
As part of its new investment in content for Africa, the BBC is launching a new TV and Digital service for children which will explain and help them to make sense of the world they are growing up in. The content will include news stories and features and will tackle issues relevant to young people. We have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and creative reporter to join our team and shape BBC Africa’s coverage for young people.
The successful candidate will have a strong journalistic background together with lots of ideas for how to engage children in the news

They will deliver content and will be expected to contribute innovative ideas, drive the creative vision and present the content.

The Job
The Reporter will work within BBC Africa’s children’s programming team and will play a rucial role creating engaging, youthful and relevant news and current affairs content from Lagos and the surrounding regions. The Reporter will have fresh, innovative and creative ideas and a clear understanding of how to deliver stories for Africa’s youth.
The successful candidate must have:
High level spoken and written English and Hausa.
A good feel for strong and distinctive stories.
Experience of producing content for multi-platform outlets

Responsibilities
To compile and present engaging content offering new perspectives and deeper exploration to stories, interviews, profiles and digital content for a youth audience.
Originate and report compelling news content reports, either online or for TV that will appeal to our target audience - finding innovative ways of treating them and bringing them to life. To write in a clear and engaging way - helping children make sense of the world they live in.
To contribute ideas and pitch original stories with both TV and digital treatments, making sure that they work for online, social and TV platforms.
Direct VT’s to a high standard - ensuring all platforms receive distinct and original content.
Travel within Lagos and across Africa when required – always working in a flexible, appropriate manner.
Ensure all work is carried out in relation to Child Protection policies and Health & Safety guidelines.
To originate, select stories and provide expert coverage for broadcast, fully observing BBC Editorial Guidelines.
Have a good sense of spotting stories and subjects that would trend or go viral digitally.
To act within the framework of overall BBC coverage, especially by Reporters and Producers in the region working for BBC Newsgathering; to maintain co-operative relations and ensure coverage forms part of a coherent overall offer.
To alert Editors to breaking news and be ready to file accurate, immediate on-the-spot reports.
To be prepared to check and advise against coverage when news agencies or other organisations’ reports are unreliable.
To help provide contact numbers, interviewees, set up discussion programmes, and provide other programme material to the BBC.
To maintain regular and clear communication with the African Service and BBC Newsgathering teams so that colleagues are briefed on the Reporter’s movements and contact numbers at all times, through the assignment.
To carry out all BBC instructions regarding business expenditure including timely and accurate filing of expenses claims.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience Required
Substantial previous experience of working in a broadcasting news or factual environment, with strong knowledge of African news and current affairs.
Experience of on air reporting and presentation particularly in video to highest standards. Authoritative microphone voice and ability to communicate effectively to listeners and viewers.
Excellent reporting and film-making skills - the ability to bring news to children in innovative ways that engage, excite and inspire.
Outstanding and fluent spoken and written language skills in English and Hausa and experience in presenting content in those languages.
Excellent writing skills and the ability to create fun, informative news content for children.
Demonstrable in depth knowledge of the audience requirements, and a good understanding of youth issues and the media interests of various age groups.
First class news judgement and a thorough understanding of BBC Editorial Guidelines, media law and Editorial Policy - particularly in relation to children’s issues.
An understanding of the changing broadcast environment and the challenges of the broadband world as it affects children.
A knowledge of and aptitude for information technology skills. A demonstrable interest and proven track record in social media.
Clear and engaging broadcast voice and ability to communicate effectively to viewers and listeners in Africa.
Ability to convey story and programme ideas and to contribute fully to the planning process.
Ability to remain calm when working to deadlines, apply sensible work priorities and pace him/herself through assignments.
Ability to work co-operatively as part of a team and to communicate effectively.
An understanding of BBC Africa and BBC World Service’s aims and objectives and the programme needs of other parts of the BBC.

Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) - This is to inform the general public that online application for admission into the 70th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna will be available from 20th October, 2017 to 9th February, 2018. Admission into NDA is open to both Male and Female Nigerians.

Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Application for Admission for the 70th Regular Course

Screening Test Date and Requirements

The screening test will be conducted as phase one of the Post-UTME screening and is scheduled to hold on "Saturday 19th May, 2018"
Therefore, all eligible candidates are to bring along their Acknowledgement Form, Screening Test Admission Card, JAMB result slip and TWO (2) postcard sized (35 x 5 inches) photographs to the Screening Test Centre.
The photographs should show only from the chest upwards and should contain the candidate’s Name, JAMB Reg No, State, Screening Test Centre, Course of study and Signature at the back.
Only successful candidates at the NDA Screening Test will subsequently be invited for the Armed Forces Selection Board (phase 2 of the screening test) following which the list of admitted candidates will be published.
Nature and Duration of Training
Candidates admitted into NDA for Regular Course wilt , undergo military and academic training as Officer Cadets for a duration of 5 years for Nigerian Army cadets 4 years for Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Air force cadets.
On successful completion of training, graduands will earn a honours degree in a core discipline (B.Sc, BEng, BA). They will equally earn a Presidential Commission into the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Administration
All Regular Course cadets will train in NDA and the cost of their administration and logistics will be borne by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Reference Materials
In response to requests from candidates for reference materials, the Academy has offered a Compendium of Past Questions & Answers at a token fee to interested candidates. This can be purchased from the Registry, NDA.
Screening Test Conditions
Only candidates who satisfied the admission requirements and must have the UTME score of 180 for Arts & Social Sciences and Science while 210 score for Engineering courses will be enabled to print the Screening Test Admission Card and participate in the NDA Screening Test at the Centre of choice.

Requirements for Admission into Academic Departments of the Nigerian Defence Academy
To be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), a candidate must have the following:
Minimum of 5 credit passes at SSCE (WAEC, NECO or NABTEB) or GCE ‘O’ Level obtained in not more than 2 sittings relevant to the Faculty of their choices.
Credit in English Language and Mathematics.
At least two supporting relevant credits to the compulsory credits in Faculty of Military Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences while that of Faculty of Science is shown in the columns for compulsory and relevant credits. However, only one supporting relevant credit is required in the Faculty of Engineering.
Be at least 17 years old and not more than 21 years old as at the month of August in the year of entry into the Academy (2018). Note that candidates who desire to join the Nigerian Air Force must be between 17 and 18 years old at entry, and also the Nigerian Army has suspended the enlistment of female candidates in her Regular Combatant programme in NDA.
Must not be less than 1.68 metres tall for male and 1.65 metres for female.
Must be medically and physically fit and must be of good moral character.
Must be single male or female without legal obligation to support any child or other individuals.
Present a Certificate of State of Origin obtained from a Local Government Area or a Certificate of State Indigeneship from the Office of the State Governor.
Working knowledge of French Language will be an added advantage.
Furthermore, candidates are to note the following:
Candidates awaiting results are not qualified. Application forms submitted without results will not be accepted.
Only examination results of not more than 5 years old from the date of examination will be accepted.
Currently, admission into the Academy is for both male and female Nigerians only, and is limited to Army and Navy in the case of female candidates.

Career / Uber Appoints New GM For West Africa by ololadeajayi(f): 9:45am On Oct 20, 2017
Uber has appointed Lola Kassim as its new General Manager for West Africa.

Kassim, a seasoned professional with over 10 years of global experience, will be responsible for driving Uber’s overall strategy for West Africa, which includes improving reliability and service levels for uber, says Uber in a statement.

While accepting the appointment, Lola said she was pleased to join Uber at a pivotal point in the company’s growth and expansion curve.
“My vision for West Africa, in particular, is to ensure that we are aligned with Uber’s overall objective of creating sustainable, alternative modes of mobility. I will also focus on ensuring that we continue to engage with our key stakeholders and relevant partners with a view to continue positive impact across West Africa,” she stated.

Speaking on the new appointment, Alon Lits, Uber General Manager Sub-Saharan Africa, said: “As a company that is deeply committed to diversity and inclusiveness, we are excited to have Lola join the team of other incredible women at Uber.”
The statement noted that the new General Manager had spent three and half years, prior to joining Uber, as a Management Consultant at McKinsey and Company.

She also worked as a Governance Advisor with the Liberian Presidency through the Africa Governance Initiative, supporting a unit driving delivery of presidential infrastructure priorities.

She began her career with the Canadian government where she served as Policy Advisor to senior officials and managed units developing policy, strategy, and business cases regarding socio-economic development programming for Canada’s Aboriginal communities and foreign policy,” the statement added.
A Nigerian-Canadian, Kassim holds a Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and MSc from the London School of Economics where she was a Chevening Scholar.
