Morocco Makes History with First Use of Green Card at U20 World Cup

Morocco’s U20 side has made history twice in two matches. On Monday they became the first team to use FIFA’s new green card at a World Cup, overturning a late penalty in their 2–0 win over Spain. By Wednesday they followed it up with a hard-fought win over Brazil — a result that sees them qualify for the knockout stages with one group match to go.

Against Spain, Yassir Zabiri and Gessime Yassine scored in front of just over 11,000 fans at Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos. The Brazil match was tighter but the Atlas Cubs did enough to ensure their stay in Chile will go beyond the group stage.

What the green card does
The green card is part of FIFA’s Football Video Support (FVS), a VAR for youth competitions and leagues without a full broadcast setup. Coaches can challenge 2 times per game for goals, penalties, direct reds and mistaken identity.

A successful challenge keeps the team’s right to challenge again; an unsuccessful one uses it up. The system is designed to correct obvious errors without the delays and cost of a full VAR review.

The big moment came against Spain. When the referee pointed to the penalty spot in the second half, Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi reached for a green card. After watching the video, the referee overturned the penalty and cautioned the Spanish forward for simulation. This was the first time that a green card had benefited a coach who had challenged a referee’s decision in a FIFA tournament.

As a result, Morocco kept the lead and took that momentum into their next game against Brazil. Two wins in two games against big teams means Morocco is already through to the round of 16. That´s a big achievement for the Atlas Cubs, who will be looking to capitalize on these impressive performances later into this tournament.

Our U20 is an uncoordinated bunch of lads showing the gross incompetence of the coaching crew
In every national coach one can easily see the tendencies of cultural bias in selection, if it's a yoruba coach, one will see many yoruba players whether competent or not, same for others
we should quit this cultural/religious selection of players, it's hurting our age-based football

NFF cannot keep recycling same old failed coaches while expecting a different result.

On the other hand, i wonder what happened to Benjamin, Divine and Chukwu, this Akin-something in the defence is a liability and Bamaiyi should retire from aged grade football, enough is enough
And my pick of the bunch is Okoro and Ayuma, Okoro has impressed me a lot, wish he can keep it together and get a good team where he can grow.

Wish them the best but they should gear up for Colombia, those boys are skillful but not unbeatable

Rest. Everyone knows the team has flaws. Some of us choose to focus on the small positives.

U also said Gala will collect basket of goals tonight. We are still waiting for your doom prophecy to happen.
Yes you focused on the small positives and crashed woefully
As for Gala it's not a prophecy of doom rather it's a poor team that cannot compete in Europe and let's see how far they can go

I asked u a question. Answer it. We tore thru their midfield a few times this 2nd half but met a central wall, does it also mean midfield collapse on the Burkinabe side??

Also did you watch Ghana vs Niger? Did you?

For the most parts, these kids are doing well and really pushing. They have also bossed possession and shown good transitions. That is my honest analysis. Not the fallacy of midfield collapse u keep throwing around.
Like I said your analysis is spot on
Nothing to work on with the boys
All round good
Wish them the best

TheSuperNerd:
Are you seeing the way Thompson and David Edeh combined to drive through the BFA Midfield? I guess the Burkinabe midfield has also collapsed abi.

These are kids. You dont expect perfection. I saw Ghana play Niger and it was worse than Benin played against us. Ghana woke up towards the end thanks to a lucky strike that went in.
Well I didn't watch Ghana match but comparing our team to others is not good rather we strive to play better than our previous match irrespective of other teams performance
Well if you say the team is ok who I be to oppose
According to you, they are very good QED

The Burkinabes sat back in the first half. In the 2nd, they are coming out strongly having used most of the 1st half to defend resolutely.

There is no midfield collapse. You are throwing that term around as if it is not the same game I am watching.

Paul Ugwu has been good bringing the ball forward and our captain David Edeh is still involved and putting himself about.
So to you this team is playing well?
I wonder how you do your analysis walahi

If our boys meet a purposeful team we go collect wotowoto
We are leaky at the back, porous in the middle finding it difficult to string passes
We've not been able to work BF goalie dude on holiday except once

I like that the team are passing the ball much better today and they know how to transit out of a press. TheGoodJoe will love this Manu side.
Not impressed with the MF, has totally collapsed again while BF has easy access driving through our MF now we only depend on long useless balls while our goalie has to deal with shots

Yes he played selfishly on a chance before this one he created for Wisdom Innocent. His finishing can get better.

But factually, BOLUWATIFE THOMPSON IS A WING MENACE. He owned the final 10mins of this game. Took matters into his hands.
We have a wing wizard on our hands if well nurtured dude will be problem for defenders
