Chapter 4

The second day after Harry’s visit, the victim’s wife came and said she had dropped charges all against me. I couldn’t believe myself. Within minutes, Dave ensured the paperwork was done. I was free. Dave didn’t waste time, he grabbed my hand and let me to his car. As he inserted the key to turn on the engine, another car pulled behind us- it was a Bentley. Harry came out of the Bentley it with a smile. Harry, 45 years and one of the richest man in town.

‘Bleep it!’ Dave gnashed his teeth. ‘Mother… fucker! I thought I asked him to come by ten.’

‘It’s past ten, Dave.’ I said.

‘Shut the Bleep up!’ Dave snorted angrily.

‘I will take it from here Dave.’ Harry said as he leaned over the window.

‘Sure.’ Dave smiled. ‘I was bringing her over to your place anyways.’ He lied. I know he was already thinking of fuckin me.

Harry held me by the arm and pulled me, gently, towards his car.

‘Why are you doing this?’ I asked Harry in whisper, scared. ‘Please.’ I pleaded.

‘Relax honey, you are safe now.’ Harry smiled as he guided me gently to the back seat. I must admit he still looked charming in my thoughts. ‘I secured your release, Kate, and it is only fair that I ensure that you look beautiful.’

‘Kate?’ I asked as I tried to get out of the car. ‘My name is not Kate! Let me out!’ I shouted.

Harry only smiled an adjusted his suit. He let me get out and ran to Dave.

‘You better tell her Dave. I will be right in my car. She’s got five minutes.’ Henry opened the door and slipped through.

‘What is going on, Dave?’ I asked, scared. ‘You promised to…’

‘Listen, I know what I promised. But you see, Harry over there ensured you are release and all charges dropped. He paid off the woman with a large sum to stop pressing charges and admit that it was a mistake. We never filed the evidence. Harry promised to get you a new identity, so that you can have a new life.’

I was happy and surprised. ‘Why didn’t you tell me this?’

‘Well, I thought we could have some nice time before he came.’ Dave said, like a guilty schoolboy. ‘I didn’t know he would be this early.

I sighed and hated him. All he ever wanted was sex. He would have denied me a life time opportunity to erase my crime record. As a Mexican, I had no chance of survival. I don’t need criminal records as voluminous as a dictionary before I was casted away. Like Pablo would say, nor being white is a deadly crime on its own!

‘But, what would Harry want from me? I cannot pay him back- I have no money.’ I asked as I made to go to the Bentley.

‘Are you kidding me? What do you think is gonna be the first thing every guy who sees you wants from you?’

‘Sex?’

‘Yeah! Just Bleep him and get off it!’ He shouted angrily. ‘And don’t forget, after you are done with him, you still have a deal with me!’

CHAPTER 3

Few hours later, I was a passenger in his car- he chatted away his life. He kept calling me an angel, something I could never be. Maybe before I left Harry, my ex-husband, one could say I am an angel, but not after. The police said they found Harry's car at his garage, but he was never found. He just disappeared.

Henry was already making me feel loved and I wondered if that was my last stop in my ever revolving world around my past. For months, I have tried to live a decent life as I move from one city to the other- changing names and assuming identities.

Harry left me with massive wealth that could last me for a lifetime. But he disappeared and was never found. Neither his flesh, nor his bones, ever resurfaced.

Harry was a jerk who would beat me at every opportunity. Once, I was left wet, at a cocktail party, after he threw the champagne in his cup, in my face and emptied a whole bottle on me by breaking it on my head, just because another man complimented my beauty and I smiled. He was jealous but influential, so, he usually got away with everything, every offence he had ever meted to me.

I had been called many names for not leaving him, but little did they knew that if I did, I would be left with nothing. I would be poorer than the historic church rat and would have to look over my shoulders as I move.

When I was twenty one, Dave, a detective, arrested me for robbery and the victim wife was all ready to ensure that I rot in jail. Especially since I rendered her husband, whom I shot at the back, spineless and confined to the wheel chair.

Pablo had introduced me to car hijacking. It really did help paid for my new apartment and a fair lifestyle of luxury. I was always the bait. We used so many tactics, ranging from hitch-hiking to acting like my car broke down. Pablo and his guys would then pounce on the unsuspecting driver and BAAAM…. There goes his car. We never fired a single shot, even though our guns were always loaded.

One day, we ran into a problem- we snatched a car belonging to a badass police officer, who fought back. Suddenly, bullets began to fly. The police office and his wife had the upper hand. They shot down three guys and made Pablo beg for his life. The wife, also a police office, suggested that they arrest him, but the husband wanted instant justice. He was sure, one of the hiatoric bad cops. He said they would claim Pablo was shot during the gun battle.

I cowered by the side of my car, hoping to remain unnoticed. I held on to a gun, but couldn’t fire a shot. Nobody taught me to. I listened the couple argue about Pablo, but it appeared the husband, who insisted on shooting Pablo, was not ready to shift his stand.Pablo started rambling in Spanish- telling me how a coward I am. He said I should do something and save him because he saved me from being hanged, back in Mexico. I wasn’t thinking, I sprang to my feet and started shooting in all direction. Both hands on the grip, eyes closed. Suddenly, there was a hard punch to my head, and I passed out.

I woke up in the cell, with Dave frowning down at me.

‘You’re a tough bitch, you know?’

‘Where am i?’ I asked as my head hammered.

‘Look around, I think your guess couldn’t go wrong. You did realised you shot a police officer, right? You should be thankful that his wife was a nice lady. I would shoot you dead. You’re still gonna spend a lifetime in jail, anyways.’

‘Where’s Pablo?’ I asked as I sat up in my cosy cell.

‘You mean the guy who tried to run when u started to shoot? He’s dead.’

My life flashed in my eyes in seconds. I would definitely rot in jail.

Luckily for me, Dave and Harry would always play poker every weekend; while at the game, Dave talked about the pretty blonde being detained, ready to be charged to court. Dave thought Harry could press some buttons in high places due to his high influence, to secure my release.

Harry came to the precinct the next day and I could swore over and over that he was wowed. I stood with all elegance, holding the iron bars as he walked around like a lion would, around his prey.

Then, he began to ask questions- and since Pablo was dead, I was clear to lie as much as I could. I said, Pablo was holding my mom as a hostage in Mexico, and she would stay alive as long as I play ball and assist in car hijacking.

Harry knew I was lying- I knew that with the way he chuckled. But he wasn’t bothered. He said that Dave said many things about my beauty, and he had to come to the precinct to see for himself. He wasn’t disappointed. But what Dave didn’t tell Henry was that he has been having sex with me in his car for almost a week, ever since I was slammed against the bar. He wanted Harry to secure my realea, so that he could continue.

Dave had come to me, the second night I was locked up and took me to his car to talk. He promised to help me out if only I would allow him have sex with me and if only I promised to always allow him continue, even after he influenced my release. I agreed and we always had sex every night in his car, until I got fed up and said if he wanted more, he should get me released. I knew he had been stalling my being charged to the court by claiming that investigation was ongoing, even when the bullet matched the number from the gun they got on me!

I told Henry where to stop.

‘You stay in a hotel?’ Henry asked as I asked him to pull over.

‘Yes.’ I replied, unfastening the seatbelt.

‘Can I come in?’ He asked.

I flashed him a fierce look that could have killed him instantly, if it were to be a spear. I knew he wasn’t expecting a ‘No’ for that.

‘No.’ I replied and tried to open the door.

He pulled me back with my arm and smiled. ‘I insist.’ He said.

I was silent, but was already angry. My heart beat fast like a deer on the run, and my breath, hot as a furnace. He must have took that for fear. They all do, but I only didn’t want to hurt him like I did Harry and the rest. I looked at his broken nose and smiled.

‘No.’ I repeated.

His nails dug deep into my skin. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the pain. I wanted him to hurt me, so that I can every reason to hurt him harder. It always feel good if they are bad and it makes me guilt-free. It was already dark and the parking lot was deserted- I could get hurt. I opened my eyes and smiled again,

‘Okay. But you cannot stay for the night.’ I said. Hoping that he grabbed the bait. He did.

‘Thank you.’ He said, and released my arm.

He opened the gloves compartment and brought out his gun. He tucked it into his trouser and smile.

‘Just in case you are thinking of acting funny.’ He smiled again and I smiled back. ‘I saw what you did to that big guy at the bar. You are beautiful, but I won’t be taking any chances.’

‘Henry, you don’t need to bring a gun and order for sex- if you want it, all you gotta do is ask.’ I tried to ease him up before he lost his control.

‘Nay, I order and take it by force. It’s like a hobby for me. You won’t understand.’

Oh, I did- you are a psychopath. I said within me. A serial abuser, a rapist and …

‘You know, I visit places like the beach, restaurants, zoos, and so on, to pick up lonely girls. I always ensure I have my way. Some, they agree, some, I force.’

‘You ever killed anyone, Harry?’

‘The name is Henry, bittch.' He said. 'And yes, I have, but not in this town. You realised I have to move from one town to the other.’

‘So do I.’ I tried to remain calm as we climbed the stairs to my apartment.

We walked the stairs in silence. I took the time to reminisce more about Dave and Harry.

Chapter 2

‘Hey beautiful,’ a voice shrieked above me.
I looked up, it was a male- tall and not very handsome. He held a bottle of water in his hands as he tried to smile.

‘Hi.’ I replied and looked away, with the hope that he will leave me alone.

I didn’t want any trouble, not anymore- especially from males. My beautiful body has always gotten me into a mess and nothing more. Big hips, skin as a silk, nice dentures, a very intimidating camel toe wedged between my thighs and big boobs with large and pointed nipples. I turned slowly, tried to cover my features by lying face down- but I was wrong, I only succeeded in arousing his sexual interest as I faced him with my great and wide butt.

‘Can I sit beside you?’ He asked. But that was only it, because he already sat in the sands by my side.

I quickly turned around and sat up. For the first time, I saw the smile on his face very clearly- it was beautifully evil. Just like Harry’s, just like Jose’s, just like…no, not Dave. Dave rarely smiles.

‘My name is Henry.’ He said as he stretched out his hands to me.

‘Harry’? I asked.

‘Harry? No, no, Henry. Not Harry. I mean Henry as in…’

‘I get it.’ I said and drew my eyes on his shorts that has bulged with great excitement. I fixed my gaze on him. I shook my head.

‘I’m sorry about that.’ He managed to let out a short laugh. ‘It’s just that…’ he smiled and covered his bulge, ‘you are such an angel with exceptional beauty.’

I nodded, unimpressed. ‘I get that a lot,’ I replied and stood up, ‘but trust me, it never ended up good.’

‘Why is that?’ He asked as he tried to keep up with me as I walked to the bar.

I didn’t bother to reply; I just wished he would leave me be.

I walked to the bar and ordered a martini. He sat beside me and was all over me. Asking me different incoherent questions. I tried hard to shake him off but he was like a glue. Then suddenly, he did something that got my attention. A bulky guy came over to me as lapped me in the ass.

‘Hey, bitch.’ He said in a very deep voice.

He was huge, heavy beard. He wore a dirty jean with, a capped sleeved shirt. He didn’t button up and black shirt he wore underneath sent a great personality message- FUCCK OFF! From the keys dangling in a chain, wore with his jean, I knew he was a truck driver. They have always proven to be aggressive. Even the female ones.

‘I’m fine.’ I replied. ‘And I am not a bitch.’ I replied and looked at Henry, who nodded, slowly.

‘Oh, the bitch has a voice now, right?’ He said.
He leaned to my face as he supported himself with the table. His breathe stinks.

‘Don’t call her a bitch!’ Henry stoop up for me.

‘You don’t have to do that.’ I told him. ‘I can handle the big guy.’ I said with a smile and looked in the big guy’s eyes.

‘You can handle me?’ The guy said and slapped me again in the butt.

‘Hey, what the fucck is your problem?’ Henry stood up again.

I tried to hold him as he made to walk over to the big guy, but he shrugged off my hand like a macho man. I left them to slug it out behind my back, while I focused on my drink. I even heard Henry say he was my boyfriend.

‘Your boyfriend is really sweet ma’am.’ The barman smiled as he refilled my cup.

‘In his dream.’ I smiled back.

‘Go to a tavern, man.’ Henry continued. ‘This is bar in a beach and not your regular tavern in a wretched motel on the highway. Give the lady some …’

Henry came crashing on the table- he bled from his mouth as the punch from the big guy sent him packing. Before I could recover from the sudden shock, the big guy dragged him again and straighten him with another punch. He flew by some inches and rearranged the tables as he slammed against them.

‘You should keep your mouth shut next time. Especially, if you are a fucking pussy.’ Big guy said and landed Henry another punch that sent him whirling. He tried to get hold of the wind to stabilize himself. I almost choke on my drink.

‘You sure he’s not your boyfriend? That guy’s gonna kill him.’ The barman said again.

I stood up, paid for my drinks and walked without any care in the world. Almost half of the customers had turned to photographers. I know YouTube and cheap blogs would have a field day.

‘Hey, hey.’ A lady called out at me. ‘You are gonna leave your boyfriend here?’

‘He’s not my boyfriend.’ I said, sharply.

‘Damn. He’s gonna kill him.’ The lady said as he stood arm in arm, watching Henry’s ass got handed over to him.

Henry wasn’t finding it funny. He couldn’t even land a punch. I dipped my hand in my bag and walked over to the fighting scene. People cheered and big guy left Henry and focused on me as I approached him. I knew he would be wondering what I was up to.

He opened his arms and walked up to meet me, ‘What the hell do you want to do?’ He asked. ‘You better go back before you get hurt, lady.’

As we closed up on each other, I fixed my eyes on his eyes and he took the bait- he fixed his eyes on me too. He never knew what was coming until I sent a kick in his crotch. He grabbed his balls and groaned in surprise. With the hand in the bag that already had the pepper spray, I sprayed his dilated eyes. He crashed back immediately and I grabbed the stool at the bar and crashed it by the side of his head. He slammed on the floor, still, with his hands clamped by his thighs. He was motionless, but breathing.

I turned to Henry, who was by all means surprised, ‘You wanna leave this place or not?’
The people cheered as I led him away.

LiteratureRANDOM THOUGHTS By Oludare007 by oludare007(op): 5:33pm On Aug 17, 2016
Hi, welcome; welcome to my random thought, for our sake, I hope you don’t get confused.

Today, I woke up at the left side of my bed (that supposedly superstitious bad side of the bed) and got mad with everything. First, I nearly believed I could have a nightmare- the nightmare was so dark and evil that I had to wake up with a frown. Every sound that I woke up to was so irking and irritating that my skin itches.

I woke up on the same bed, same room, with a heat all over the room because of the ceiling fan that doesn’t work, for as usual- no power supply. It seems nothing has changed and nothing may never change.

The sound that woke me up was from outside my window was from some jobless bachelors like me, who were arguing over some very stupid and frivolous matter! The noises were so maddening and loud that it woke me from my lovely dream, turning the beautiful dream into a nightmare- because in the dream, my troubles were all gone.

I was living in a mansion with constant electricity, running water, beautiful girls and a lot of money. You could imagine my frustration when I woke to the same old life- no job, no power supply and no money! My mouth was so heavy and stuffed with odour that it bulged with foul gases! If it were in my dream, I would have walked into the bathroom, turn or press the tap and wash it all off! But these idiots made me remember that I had to go outside, walk many meters and use my energy in fetching water from the well!

Right on my bed, I decided to think about their argument and what it really was. Though, they were Actors and actresses and which one is better that which other, but little did they know that calling these set of people actors and actresses is just a hocuspocus; these people could be called pretenders or liars because they make a living by lying to the whole world. You call it acting, but it’s simply lying.

How else does one describe a group of people pretending to be what they are not just to get paid? How do you explain the death of an actor in a movie and his reappearance in another one- hale, healthy, like he was never dead? I mean, I won’t be mad if he had reappeared as a ghost or a zombie in a new movie- that is understandable, right? But he is all there in the new movie like a fresh baby!

The last time Emeka Ike died in one movie that I watched, I cried because I liked him as an actor, but I had to run for safety when I met him in a shopping mall some weeks later. I shouted that he was a ghost and people looked at me like a madman. How so?

I once watched a movie about a young man whose mother died after giving birth to him and his father murdered over a land. It had the potential of being a great movie until they spoil the whole fun for me! The infant was crawling underneath the table and suddenly became a 25 years old guy looking for something underneath the same table! Jesus! This happened just within 30 minutes of the movie! I mean, if this happened after 25 hours of watching the movie, I could still deal with that!

The worst is when they made it look like the world is just so lawless-people driving cars like maniacs, destroying properties and shooting on the streets, yet no police! The bad guy leaves traces and heaps of dead bodies while trying to kill the good guy but he was still able to walk high on the same street!

Have you a seen where the bad guys suddenly cannot get an aim at the good guy even after shooting thousands of bullets, only for the good guy to raise his head, point his pistol and shoot them down- one by one. I bet you can see the bullets hitting objects besides and all over him except him. And he must be so cool while the bullets were flying that he had to talk, give instructions, aim and shoot them down. Oh, more funny is when the bullets hit him, it must be his leg, shoulder or a pass through! And hey, don’t be surprised when he started running with that same leg or swinging a killer punch with the affected arm!
Oh! Common, give me a break!

I understand that the world of full of deceit, but why would some set of people write out a whole script of lies for some individuals to direct, some to produce and others to act it out? All to sell to us and get paid. I mean, that cruelty is out of this world- selling out a lie! I mean, how low can one get?
Well, if you must know, lying is a sin and all lairs must go to hell. You don’t have to believe in hell but hell yeah- it exists.

After an excruciating minutes of listening to these arguments across my window, I decided to go back to sleep, to drown myself in the euphoria of my ex-beautiful dream. I remembered the word of my great grandma and the exact instructions on how to go back to the dream you were having before being obstructed. I stood up, closed my window to block the noises from the arguing morons and took a chalk from my drawer. I drew a big circle on the floor- big enough to house me in a sleeping position. I opened the fridge and took out some ginger. I cut it in seven places and placed it all around the circle- three at the direction of my head, two below my feet and one each side. Then I took a spinach and chewed. I spat in my hand, rubbed them together and rubbed in all on my face.

Comfortably, I slept in the circle with a smile- great grandma can never be wrong. I have believed all she had ever told me. The reminisced on the dream as directed and ensure I stayed in it. My reason of going back wasn’t all about the money or the big mansions- but there was this beautiful swarthy with a big booty and some moderate boobs. She was all over me and was ready to go all down with it. I must go back, that mission must be accomplished.

Brethren, by the time I opened my eyes, hoping to wake on my bed in the mansion, I found myself in hell! I couldn’t believe that great grandma, a whole ancestor of mine, also sold me a lie.

CHAPTER 11

Emeka didn’t mind colliding into anything or anybody as he ran, all his thoughts were concentrated on how to stop the impending disaster. He used the speed dial feature on his phone once again, putting the phone in a speaker mode as it rang; the result was always the same- no answer!

“No!” He shouted as he made efforts to run faster. “God, you need to help me,” he prayed and kept the cruise like a bull, avoiding obstacles in swiftness, and overcoming hurdles like a skilled athlete. He should have boarded a cab, but this is the time when bus-stops were stuffed up like a stadium hosting a derby, and a tortoise is faster than the traffic. Besides, his destination is just some few streets ahead.

“Yes, thank God,” he said within himself as Bukky’s hostel became visible. For the last time, he speed-dialed her number again and it was a dead end. He went right in and straight to Bukky’s door. He dashed at the door latch- it was firmly shut. He shook it two more times before he flung it open with his foot. He slapped the wall for the switch and the horror of the darkness came into light as he saw two people fumbling for the duvet to cover their unclothedness, but the surprise on their face was laid bared.

“No wonder she wasn’t picking up,” he told himself as he went closer to the bed.

“What is the meaning of this?” The female’s voice tried to bark. The male didn’t even talk; he concentrated on covering his unclothedness with the bed sheet.

“Oh, I am so sorry.” Emeka shielded his eyes with his hands and quickly moved back, realizing his mistake. “I thought this was Bukky’s room.” He said.

“Get out of my room!” Michelle shouted at him and he quickly fumbled for the door opening to make his way out.

He checked the room number on the door, “God, my mistake.” He said as he looked for the right room number. In a while, he found it and knocked. Bukky opened. She was unmoving and necessarily cold.

“What do you want?” She asked.

“I am sorry to disturb you, Bukky, please, I need to see Blessing.” He said.

Bukky scoffed. “You should be ashamed of yourself, Emeka. Why are you still looking for her after what you asked her to do against her will? Threatening her with text messages and phone calls?”

“I’m sorry,” he tried to explain, but she cut in and said,

“Don’t be; she has been at the hospital down the street since morning, she should be through by now. So, I guess it is too late now, if you are even thinking of …!”

He didn’t bother to listen again; he dashed outside and started running towards the hospital. It was just some few blocks down the street.

He ran and jumped like a rabbit. He was surprisingly agile and not tired as he ran the distance. As he ran inside the hospital gate, ignoring the warning to stop from the security guards, he saw Blessing, accompanied by Kike, Bukky’s Sister- they were just coming out of the hospital. He screeched right in front of her, with a smoke of dust everywhere.

“How is my baby?” He asked her, panting, holding her arms for support.

“What baby?” Blessing, though weak, asked. “I just aborted it just like you instructed. You already said it wasn’t yours and I believed you.” Blessing replied.

His hand slid slowly from her arm as he fell on his knees with both hands clamping his head.

“Nooooooo,” he screamed.

Kike, who already got a call from her sister not to entertain any conversation with Emeka, dragged Blessing along, leaving Emeka right on the spot.

Emeka ran to meet them, but the security guards were already over him to throw him out. He struggled free as they bundled him to be thrown out of the hospital premises.

“You don’t understand,” he screamed. “I need to talk to her! This is my life!”

Blessing heard his last statement as she was about to enter the taxi that brought them to the hospital. She asked the security guards to allow him to talk.

“What is it, Emeka?” Blessing asked. “How does this becomes your life?”

“Listen, Blessing,” he went on his knees. Blessing smiled and shook her head. “I will marry you” Emeka continued. “I am sorry for all I have done. It was a mistake. Please, I know you have a good heart. You have to forgive me.” He sobbed.

“I have forgiven you already, Emeka.” Blessing said. “You were not the one at fault- I was the idiot, the fool, the one who had no vision and no priority. I thank God for the good friends like Bukky. Listen, Emeka, let it go, I want to face my studies now. This is a second chance I will never squander. Not many people had this chance.”

“Please, do not say that.” Emeka pleaded. “Like I said, I promise to marry you.”

“Why are you even make marrying me sound like you were doing me a favour?” Blessing asked angrily.

“I didn’t mean to sound that way, I…”

“Emeka, I can never marry an animal. When the time is come- after I am done with my studies, I want a man and not a kid. I want a human and not a beast who raises his hands at his lady and ….”

Emeka grabbed her skirt and shouted, “Please, don’t do this. Remember how we started and how…”

“Oh, I remember everything and I will love to forget everything!” Blessing scoffed. She was now near tears, “I can never bring myself to remember a thing about you. It was a bitter experience all through!” She finished and yanked her skirt from his hands. She entered into the Taxi with Kike and while on his knees with stretched arms, Emeka watched the taxi exit the premises.

The security guards watched him in pity and let him be. But his mind went back to the shrine and the words of the oracle…

“You need to stop her now before she aborts the pregnancy. If she did, first, no other woman will be able to bear you a child- Not in this world! Even if you found a way to have one, even by adoption, a strange illness will always take it away from you before you ever becomes happy about it! Unless, unless, without force, in her own volition, she agrees to forgive you and marry you!”

CHAPTER 10
Bukky and Ade had slept off, tied to each other by their hands. Ade snored slightly.

Blessing thought about her life, her family and future. She knew if she kept this pregnancy and Emeka kept reveling in denial, she is already a single mother- a state that has a screaming level of discrimination in her part of the world. She remembered when one of her friend talked about condom and she was lying that she never had sex and wouldn’t. She regretted she should had learnt more about the use of it, instead of allowing Emeka to assure her that as a virgin, she is still far from getting pregnant.

The doctor also said something about infection. But she wanted to lie to herself that Emeka was free from it. She loved him and she had allowed herself to believe everything he ever said.

“If you love me, then we should not use the condom.” Emeka had once told her when she brought up the issue.

She was dunce that she should have known that he would say anything just to satisfy his selfish needs. And just like Bukky had said, she has every right to protect her life and future.

She was glad she didn’t tell Bukky that she once contacted an STD from Emeka. They had spent a fortune curing the disease. Even when the doctor had said it was sexually transmitted, Emeka had pushed the blame on her and accused her of sleeping around!

She could also recollect the time she saw messages from other girls on his phone- she approached him because the messages clearly denotes he was having sexual relationship with them. Emeka had went into a state of fury and warned her not to touch his phone again. Since then, he always locked his phone with a code.

Blessing heaved aloud and Ade and Bukky quickly unbundled and ran to her side.

“What is it?” Bukky asked her friend.

“Nothing.” Blessing managed a smile. It was a first after the whole storm had started. “I was just thinking of what happened few days back. I wondered if Uncle James would have been back.”

“You need to get rid of this pregnancy and move on, Blessing. I am not going to stop saying that. You don’t want to live with that animal.” Bukky said.

“I know.” Blessing started crying. “I just can’t believe I am going to murder my first child.” She covered her mouth with her clothes.

“I understand.” Bukky began. “But, you need to understand that this is not yet a child. It hasn’t taken a human form. Please, don’t let it become dangerous by letting it grow.”

“I am scared.” She snickered. “I can lose my life.” Her voice failing.

“Of course, you could. But, that is only if you decided to drink some concoction, use an overdose of certain drugs.” Ade added.

“So, do you know the drugs I can use?” Blessing asked.

“Drugs are not legal nor safe. We will have to take you to an abortionist. A legal one.” Bukky said.

“Can’t we just visit the nurses around? They may be able to…”

“No!” Bukky shouted her down. “We are not going to visit a quack, Blessing. We are going straight to a certified hospital for this.”

“I don’t have the money. I learnt it is expensive to have a proper and legal one. They said the chemists can also do it fine.”

“Who have you been talking to?” Ade asked.

“Yes, who have you been talking to?” Bukky added.

“I…” she waited a bit and continued, “I lied to Michelle that one of my sister’s friend is affected and wanted an abortion. She said she will give me the phone number of a chemist who has helped her many times.”

“Many times? Michelle?” Bukky was puzzled.

“Listen, she asked me not to tell anyone. She said it’s better than the hospital where many eyes will see you.” Blessing said.

Bukky said she should have thought about the shame before fooling around. Ade let her realized that because Michelle walks around fine doesn’t mean she is fine. There may be complications she wouldn’t realize until later. Infections, bad abortion leading to infertility and so on, which will manifest later. This scared Blessing who wanted another chance for the future. She agreed to get an abortion and move on with her life!

*******************************

Uncle James came back two days later and Monica was quick to relay the shameful actions of Emeka to him. Uncle James was very angry, but also scared that his nephew might have taken the wrong decision that could jeopardize his future. He called for Emeka, who without knowing, lied that Blessing had decided to take an abortion. He also lied that she slapped Blessing because she knew she has not being faithful to him and that was the reason she wanted an abortion.

“Are you saying she told you herself that the pregnancy is not yours, Emeka?” Uncle James asked again and Emeka said he was sure.

“Let me warn you, Emeka. I consulted the oracle before leaving for the meeting and I was assured that the pregnancy is yours. This lady, Blessing, must not abort this pregnancy. If she did, you are in a lifetime trouble.”

“But Uncle, why will you say that?” Emeka, who believed that his Uncle was saying that to make him accept the responsibilities he didn’t want, asked.

“I believe it will be best if you heard from the mouth of the gods themselves,” Uncle James said, "because if you are the one who coerced this lady, by your actions, to embrace abortion, then you will suffer greatly for it!"

Emeka flinched and frowned. "Uncle..."

"Listen, my child. This world and the people we meet, even the ones we never talked with, are all networked to each other. Each, has a significant part I. Our lives and when we severed a thread of this network through our stupidity, we already disturbed the balance and struck the cord that vibrates another sound through the network, thereby, affecting each and everyone, but particularly the one who is the culprit."

"I... I don't understand, Uncle. But if Blessing decides to abort, it should be on her."

"Did you tell her not to abort it?"

"I didn't ask her to abort it either!" Emeka lied. He was now sweating, afraid for himself.

"Then, the repercussions are on her. The child that is coming through may die or live. But no matter what, it is part of the of the network and whether it lives or dies, it's already contributed it's own quota. And when you tried to stop this..."

"But this pregnancy was a mistake, Uncle."

"There is no such thing as that. Things that happen, happened for a reason."

Emeka ran his hands through his bald hair, he sighed. "What did you say the repercussions are if..."

"I did not tell you that there are any repercussions, the gods did."

"Okay, what did they say?"

"Son, I think it is besynyou hear from them yourself. Follow me."

He led Emeka to the shrine and gave him an ointment to rub into his ears.

“This will make you hear from the gods.” He said. "Now, stuff this into your ears." He said as he gave Emeka some cotton wool.

Then he consulted with the oracle while seated around a big glowing globe. He asked for the gods to tell Emeka the future if the pregnancy was aborted.

First, there was silence. Then, Emeka started to hear some sounds...then some words... and a clear statement from some coarse voices that seemed to overlap.

"What did they say?" His uncle asked. Emeka was silent.

Emeka removed the wools from his ears and drop them on the floor.

"Uncle, please, I will be back." He said and made a run for the exit.

"Emeka! Emeka!" Uncle James shouted after him but he didn't stop. Uncles Emeka ran after him, telling him to stop!

But Emeka wouldn't stop. He rushed into the house and rushed out, towards the main road- his mobile phone clamed in his fist!

CHAPTER 9

The ceiling fan rotated slowly. It let out a shriek of creak every time it completed an oscillation. The window, opened in half, let in a gentle breeze with a low whistling sound. Everything else in the room stood still- including Blessing, Ade and Bukky. One could almost conclude that they were mourning.

Bukky cuddled up to Ade, who, seeing this as a life time opportunity, wrapped her up in his arms like his breath.

“You know,” Bukky turned to Ade, “I still couldn’t believe he slapped her.” She whispered.

Ade sighed, “You were there, right? So was I. The sooner you believe, the better you help her stop this madness.” Ade whispered back.

“She is beyond help.” Bukky said. “She still insists on keeping the pregnancy.” Bukky said with worry.

“Maybe, it’s what you girls know as love.”

“Why am I not been affected by that disease?” Bukky asked Ade.

“What disease?” Ade asked.

“Love! Why am I not been enveloped in the madness?”

“Maybe you lack affection.”

“No, try ‘wise’. I am not a fool. I have a reason for living and I have priorities. That is what differentiates me from idiots like her.”

Ade rolled his eyes. She is truly wise, he knew this. “See, enough of us. How do we help Blessing?”

“Even with a black eye, she still professes her love for him. This all strange to me. Is she crazy or what? Maybe Uncle James already bewitched her.”

Ade asked Bukky to forget about Uncle James. “He is not that type of person.” He argued.

In all, Blessing sat, dead silent, lost in thoughts, sad without tears. In her hand, she held the picture of Emeka, even with her swollen face. Right within the whispers and the silence, she reminisced about the event of two days ago…

************************************

They had arrived at Uncle James’s place to know about Blessing’s fate, since he already promised to talk to his nephew. But on arriving at his place, Monica, his first daughter, told them that her father traveled for an emergency event. It was a meeting of the herbalists and being the general secretary, he had no choice but to be there. Even though it was impromptu.

“I overheard him talking to Emeka though- he said they will talk when he is back from the meeting.” Monica told Blessing, whom she was worried and concerned about.

“So, when will he be back?” Bukky had asked.
Monica said she couldn’t say, but assured them that Uncle will never support Emeka’s decision to let Blessing abort the pregnancy. She asked Blessing to be patient.

“Talking of Emeka, where is he?” Ade just realized they haven’t asked the question.

“He’s not available.” Monica said.

“I thought you said he came home some days after we left? Blessing asked.

“Yes, he did. He said he had an accident.” Monica replied.

Blessing had sprung from her feet in fear. She asked many questions at once. Monica assured her that he is now fine. He just went to see some friends. Blessing was relieved, Bukky was angry at her friend.

Few minutes later, as they were about leaving, Emeka had showed up. Blessing rushed to her feet to meet with him after seeing him in a bad shape. Plastered forehead and a sling to the neck. But it was a surprise to everyone when Emeka met her goodwill with a wild slap across her face. This sent her flying to the left. She banged herself against the wall with a scream and fell with a thud- silent.

Everyone had frozen in horror- everyone except Emeka who churned out threats and warnings to Blessing who lay still on the floor.

“I have told you and I will keep repeating this, stay away from me! I don’t want you or the bastard inside of you!”

He had walked inside and ignored them all.

This Blessing is just so foolish.
morsadh:
Very nice storyline. Can't wait to see what happens next. Kudos, oludare007.

I don't know what it is about love that turns some people into 'stick-sweet', but I do know that Emeka is a silly goat.
thanks
