Politics / Lasg Reiterates Ban On Commercial Motorcycles In Restricted Areas by OLUDERU: 5:25pm On Mar 27, 2023
The Lagos State Government has reiterated that the ban on commercial motorcycles popularly called ‘okada’ in 10 Local Government Areas, (LGAs) and 15 Local Council Development Areas, (LCDAs) in the metropolis still persists.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa declared this at weekend while on tour of some restricted areas within the state, where large numbers of motorcyclists (okada riders) had resumed operations.

Reaffirming the State Government’s ban on okada in the Local Government Areas which include; Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu, Mushin, Apapa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Surulere and Eti-Osa, as well as the Local Council Development Areas under them which are; Ojodu, Onigbongbo, Lagos Island East, Yaba and Coker Aguda. With others at; Itire-Ikate, Eti-Osa West, Iru Victoria Island, Ikoyi-Obalende, Ikosi-Isheri, Agboyi-Ketu, Isolo, Ejigbo, Bariga and Odi-Olowo, the Transport Special Adviser urged both riders and passengers to keep off.

He implored the general public to comply as both the riders and passengers are both liable to 3 years in prison if apprehended and prosecuted, with their motorcycles impounded and crushed in the public view, in line with the provision of Section 46, sub-section 1, 2 & 3 of the Transport Sector Reform Law (TSRL), 2018.

While soliciting for support on government policies by all and sundry, the Special Adviser noted that despite the available existing interventions and viable alternatives provided for okada operators which were expected to cushion the effect of the ban on their livelihood, the recalcitrant riders have refused to take advantage of them.

Highlighting some of the viable alternatives made available for the operators by the State Government, Giwa stated that the; Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA); (vocational training), Ministry of Wealth Creations and Employment; (internship programmes), Office of Civic Engagement, Office of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) (Loan for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises MSMEs), Lagos Economic Acceleration Programme “LEAP”) and the Ministry of Agriculture (Agric YES) are all trade support for the riders.

He also said the State Government’s First and Last Mile Bus Transport Scheme, the BRT Scheme, the Lagos e-hailing taxi Scheme (LAGRIDE) and other sustainable modes of transportation were also part of interventions provided to minimize the inconveniences of the motoring public in executing their daily activities.

Giwa averred that the position of government on okada is very clear, stressing that there is no going back in order to consolidate on the achievements made so far in the decrease in accident and crime rates as well as the return of sanity to the communities within the State.

He added that the Security formations who have been partnering with the State Government including the Nigeria Police Force, the Army, Navy and Air force are still on ground to sustain enforcement on all the banned corridors, as well as the State Traffic Management Authority, (LASTMA) and the Anti-Okada Squad.

Signed;

Hon. Sola Giwa,
Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Lagos State.

Politics / Lagos Guber Poll: Stop Heating The Polity, Artisans, Technicians Tell Lp by OLUDERU: 10:19pm On Mar 22, 2023
Congratulate Sanwo-Olu, vow to defend Governor’s mandate

•Demand autonomous agency

Lagos State artisans and technicians have warned the Labour Party governorship candidate in last Saturday’s election, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, to desist from destructive and inciting comments that may cause the breakdown of laws and order in the State, saying Lagos cannot afford a repeat of EndSARS saga.

The artisans and technicians advised Rhodes-Vivour to channel his grievances over the gubernatorial poll through the appropriate channel, which is the court of law, rather than inciting people with ‘infamous outbursts and calls for terror.’

Speaking at a press conference in Ikeja on Wednesday, the artisans and technicians through the National Coordinator of Association of Nigeria Artisans and Technicians (ASNAT), Adeshina Akinyemi, who addressed journalists, congratulated Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his victory during the March 18 gubernatorial poll and vowed to defend the Governor’s mandate.

They appealed to Governor Sanwo-Olu to establish an autonomous governmental agency or parastatal that will serve as an overseer agency for the operational activities of all Lagos artisans and technicians, pleading that one of them, a professional artisan or technician should be allowed to head or manage the agency or parastatal when created.

He said: “The Governor’s re-election serves as a re-affirmation of confidence and faith reposed in him by majority of Lagosians. Through his character of competence, capacity, and sagacity, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated his vast knowledge of Lagos and Lagosian needs.

“We believe that Governor Sanwo-Olu will use the opportunity provided by his re-election to leverage on his first term achievements and success to provide more beautiful milestones in infrastructural developments in all sectors of governance through his THEMES agenda.”

The artisans and technicians who vowed to defend the mandate given to Governor Sanwo-Olu by Lagosians called on all the traditional fathers, especially Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, and all Eko elders to call Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour to order and warn him to desist from his destructive and inciting comments.

“We must be cautious and vigilant as our attention is drawn to the inflammatory statements and ranting of the Labour Party’s candidate in the last Lagos State gubernatorial election, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, who has been calling on his supporters to unleash terror on Lagos by embarking on a violent and aggressive protest just because he lost an election in a clean and clear contest.

“At this point, we call on the Police, the DSS, and all other relevant security agencies in Lagos State to be alert and call Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour for questioning over his recent outburst. This is exactly how the EndSARS issue started without paying any important attention to it until it escalated and ravaged the whole country like a colossus.

“We fear that, if the urgent step is not taken to caution Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the aftermath of his action might also escalate like the EndSARS and the worst hit will be the artisans and technicians who depend on daily income to feed themselves and their families.

“We all remember how that inglorious pandemonium called EndSARS ravaged the entire country for almost two weeks and made it impossible for artisans and technicians to work and earned income, to that event, we lost many of our members to cold hands of death while some went into depression which cost them mental illness while some contracted stroke and have not recovered till date. So, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour should be made to retract his infamous outburst and call for terror," they said.

Speaking on the need for an autonomous government agency or parastatal for Lagos artisans and technicians, Akinyemi said its establishment will bring about rapid development and progress to their sector and will take them out from being a liability to the government to being a great asset and major contributory body to the Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) of Lagos State.

She also commended the security agencies for conducting themselves professionally and with the utmost civility, thereby ensuring that elections took place and met international best practices.

Gbajabiamila urged those planning to plunge Lagos State into a political and security crisis to desist from it immediately before the law catches up with them, adding that political thuggery and cultism remain prohibited.

"Elections are not a do-or-die affair, politicians should always approach it with a high level of civility and patriotism. They should see themselves as part of the society they want to lead and must not destroy it with their ambition to lead or rule by all means," she advised.

We, therefore, adjudged the election to have met the international best practices of credible, transparent, free, fair, and gender-friendly elections."

Politics / LASG Flags Off Redevelopment Of Igbosere Courthouse Razed By Hoodlums by OLUDERU: 9:13pm On Dec 12, 2022
Rebuild Lagos Trust Fund moves to rebuild, expand Igbosere High Court

Out of the rubble of ruins, construction of a modern complex for Lagos State High Court in Igbosere has begun.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, performed the sod turning for the redevelopment of the oldest courthouse in the country, two years after the iconic colonial vestige was razed by rampaging hoodlums in an unrest that trailed a protest in October 2020.

The courthouse is being reconstructed by Rebuild Lagos Trust Fund (RLTF) set up by Governor Sanwo-Olu in November 2020 through the Executive Order EO/BOS/2020.

The Fund is saddled with the responsibility of rebuilding and restoring all State’s assets torched in the unrest.

The Igbosere Court, one of the torched assets, dates back to the period when Lagos became the British Protectorate. It was formerly known as the Supreme Court until the relocation of Federal Capital Territory to Abuja when the court reverted to a State High Court.

Sanwo-Olu described the rebuilding effort as a “significant moment” in the administration of the justice system, noting the full restoration of the oldest judicial institution would help the State put the history of the courthouse in proper perspective.

The Governor said the Igbosere Court remained a symbolic heritage deeply ensconced in the sociology of Lagos. He assured that the courthouse would not only be restored with modernised facade to exhibit full traits of its architecture, its facilities would also be upgraded to strengthen administration of justice system.

He said: “This is a simple but significant event in the judiciary. I am humble to be performing the groundbreaking for the redevelopment of the Lagos High Court, Igbosere. We are on a journey to restore this architectural legacy, which has been part of Lagos heritage. We have put together a well-thought-out team comprising private sector professionals and Government officials to efficiently manage the Rebuild Lagos Trust Fund charged with the task to build back assets of the State destroyed by hoodlums.

“The team is to come together to advise and work with us while we continue this rebuild journey. This project is one of the several others that the Fund will be handling together. In the first phase, we will be replicating the design of the Igbosere Court and every feature of the building to recreate the facade of the old building. We are rebuilding a bigger edifice for Lady Justice. The courthouse will be brought back to life to ensure we have smooth dispensation of justice for our citizens.”

Sanwo-Olu maintained that Lagos had no hand in the event that led to the razing of the courthouse and other State assets, stressing that the State had put the emotions behind the dark event and looked ahead to build a city where wheels of justice would not be placed out of the reach of all citizens.

The new courthouse, the Governor said, would give judges and judicial officers ample space to work, while maintaining the independence of the judiciary.

He said: “We are here to let people know that we have put the emotions behind us. We are forward-looking people. This event further confirms the strong spirit of Lagos and the resilience of the city, which explain our ability to withstand shocks and build back better.

“We will never allow the forces that razed the building to win the battle. That is why we are publicising the reconstruction of the Igbosere Court to let the whole world know and show our resilience. We will be turning this bad situation to positive development.”

The Fund’s Board of Directors chairman, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, said the Igbosere Court was the significant institution among the six pioneer projects identified by the Fund, given its historical significance to Lagos and the country.

The Fund, he said, remains dedicated to its restoration and upgrade.

“In the first phase, we will rebuild the old court structure, upgrade it to a state-of-the-art facility, and restore the artefacts that are signatures of its history. The second phase of this project will be a multi-story and multi-purpose structure to resolve space constraints and will feature additional office spaces, courtrooms, parking spaces, as well as giving room to future expansion,” Cardoso said.

Lagos Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, said October 2020 would remain a sad day in the history of the Judiciary, noting that the torching of the court was a “fatal breach” in the temple of justice.

He said dispensing justice was not about brick and mortar, but an idea which could not be killed by destruction and desecration of the temple.

“This redevelopment will raise from the ashes a more beautiful court complex than the one destroyed. With this event, light has overcome darkness,” Onigbanjo said.

Chief Judge of Lagos, Hon. Justice Kazeem Alogba, recalled the last judicial activity in the courthouse before it was razed, noting that the Governor had a plan for massive renovation of the High Court before the incident.

Despite the large scale destruction wreaked on the structure, Alogba said the statue of the Lady Justice conspicuously placed at the entrance of the High Court was not torched and also the statues of lions.

The Chief Judge said the redevelopment effort was a manifestation of the beginning of nature’s plan for the oldest court building in the country.

In the redevelopment, there will be an expansion of the number of courtrooms from 22 to 38 in response to the deficiency in the number of courtrooms in the State.

To eliminate car-parking challenges around the court, a multilevel park would be built in the new complex and a 700-seater auditorium.

Science/Technology / Lagos Ready To Drive Your Passion, Sanwo-olu Tells Young Ceos In Tech Space by OLUDERU: 4:15pm On Dec 09, 2022
•Governor charts inclusion, partnership in chat with youth entrepreneurs

At 24, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu initiated a disruptive shift in the plumbing sector, which revolutionised the vocation and aided its transition from the trade of unskilled artisans to professional occupation.

The young freshly graduated Sanwo-Olu, in early 1990s, incorporated “Dial The Plumber” - an engineering and business-centric coy that leveraged the limited telephone technology of the period to create hands-on solutions in plumbing ecosystem for the growing oil industry in the Niger Delta.

The disruption created huge opportunities for local skilled plumbers until the mid-1990s when advanced technology swept through the sector and created a wide knowledge gap for local professionals. With no Government incentive and support for up-skilling, the firm had the market out of its reach and became disadvantaged.

The short background narrative about his start-up experience set the tone for the robust conversation Governor Sanwo-Olu had, on Thursday, with dozens of under-35 young executives in Lagos tech space, telecommunications, Fintech, banking, arts and creative industry, health, agric and logistics sectors.

The Rafkatu Hall in The Wheatbaker in Ikoyi offered a relaxed ambience for the engagement tagged “Meet and Greet: In Conversation with Mr. Governor”, organised by the Senior Special Assistant to Sanwo-Olu on Development Partnership and Economic Planning, Ayisat Agbaje.

It was the second in the series of the strategic engagements the Governor had with innovative millennials in private sector to foster the administration’s objectives of promoting youth inclusion in public governance through deliberate partnership and collaboration.

Sanwo-Olu said his “Dial The Plumber” start-up idea came 10 years ahead of its time, stressing that the innovation could have been fully activated and sustained job opportunities for the then young skilled plumbers, carpenter and IT professionals had GSM revolution in Nigeria happened in the early 1990s.

From his interaction with the young tech disruptors, Sanwo-Olu said he could visualised a lot of possibilities through the minds of the participants, assuring that his Government was ready to take forward the conversation through interventions.

He said: “In the space of 32 years, we have seen advancement in digital technology, which has created a lot of opportunities across sectors. We believe you young people of today have a lot of creative and innovative ideas that can change our society and bring us in tandem with modernity. We are having this conversation because we don’t want these brilliant ideas and energy to exist only in your minds; we want to create an avenue for partnership where the Government can initiate necessary interventions, so that you won’t feel discouraged and be at disadvantage.

“The intervention could come in terms of Government incentives, encouragement, public policies, funding or bringing your creative ideas in contact with investors to take them up for full activation. Our Government in Lagos is about giving support to young people to nurture their dreams to reality. Many start-ups were not opportune to have opportunity of technology decades ago. My own start-up idea came 10 years ahead of its time. If there was GSM revolution in the 1990s, the idea would have been fully activated. My charge is that, you must first believe in yourselves and ensure your creative ideas are genuine. As responsive Government, we are ever ready to partner with you in driving your passion.”

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos could not afford to lay back in taking the advantage of young people’s innovations, noting that the disruption caused by global pandemic had effects in food supply chain, nature of work and access to medical services. Lagos, the Governor said, was able to turn around the challenges, given the creative solutions encouraged by the State Government through youth innovators.

The Governor took the participants on achievements recorded across his administration’s THEMES agenda, especially the ongoing rollout of smart city capability of the State to deliver a resilient 21st century megacity with functioning integrated urban mass transpaotation system.

Sanwo-Olu said: “We want to have this kind of engagement with you, where Government does not have comparative advantage, let it slow down and create relevant ecosystem where the private sector can take leadership role. We strongly believe it is the private sector that can create the jobs, while the Government enables the environment to flourish. We want to leverage this platform to build strong and lasting partnership with you to co-create the growth trajectory we all want to see. One of the ways of achieving results is engagement like this.”

Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Sam Egube, gave a projection of the future development Lagos was working towards. He said Lagos was running on a big vision that situated its development activities in group of developed economies.

The convener and SSA to the Governor on Development Partnership and Economic Planning, Ayisat Agbaje, said the programme was initiated on the desire of Sanwo-Olu to meet young people doing outstanding work to drive economic development in the State.

She said: “The event focuses on igniting communication between the high-flyer youths in the State and the administration. Establishing consistent communication is not our only goal, we want you to promote full understanding of the activities of this administration and give participants a sense of satisfaction for their contributions to the development of Lagos emerging economy.”

Some of the participants had the opportunity to share their transformational ideas with the Governor in the segment tagged: “The Lagos I See”.

Hanu Fejiro Agbodje, founder of Patricia - a Fintech company focusing on blockchain technology.

Named Vanguard ’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2021, Hanu shared story of how he hit gold with his Patricia dream, having failed 13 times to build at start-up stage.

Others are Anthony Azekwoh, a digital artist who lives and works in Lagos; Folake Owodunni, CEO of Emergency Response Africa, and co-founder of Hook Creative Agency, Toheeb Balogun.

Politics / Lagos Commissioner Calls For Review Of Power Generation, Distribution Law by OLUDERU: 3:07pm On Dec 09, 2022
… As 3rd Real Estate Market Place Conference and Exhibitions ends in Lagos

The Lagos State Government has called for the urgent review of Nigeria’s power generation and distribution law under the purview of the Federal Government based in view of the huge amount spent on diesel daily by industries especially manufacturing sector in the State.

Lagos State Commissioner for Energy, Engr. Olalere Odusote made this call on Wednesday as part of his submission at the end of the 3rd Real Estate Market Place Conference and Exhibitions held in Victoria Island.

Speaking on Sustainable Energy Solutions in the Real Estate, the Commissioner said that personal energy generated by individuals, corporate organisations including real estate practitioners usually come with huge financial burden in addition to the environmental pollution that comes with it.

According to him, the country’s Real Estate sector is still begging for huge investment in the area of power to make the sector more viable and attractive to potential investors.

He explained that this became necessary as most private individuals and businesses in Lagos utilised diesel powered generators rather than electricity from the national grid.

According to him, the two distribution companies in Lagos State – Eko Disco and Ikeja Electric – established nine years ago, sell about 800 to 900 megawatts initially and have only improved to 800 to 1,000 megawatts nine years after.

“Nothing has changed in the national grid sector nine years after. However, Lagos State within a spate of nine years had grown from having about 8,000 megawatts of installed diesel capacity to about 23,000 megawatts.

“The diesel market of the off-grid market has grown by about 300 per cent but the grid market has not grown at all or just about one to two per cent,” he said.

He added that the state injected almost 1,000 transformers into the grid to improve electricity supply to its residents, but without the desired result.

Odusote said a lot of the energy utilised in Lagos came from diesel generators, and that because of the high population of the city, the emission from that energy source had become unsustainable.

The Commissioner explained that Lagos had been projected to be city with the largest population in the world in 50 years, therefore energy for the housing infrastructure needed for the population must be put into consideration.

Odusote said that was why the state government came up with the Lagos Electricity sector policy, with the aim of providing universal access to electricity for all residents of the state.

He stated that the draft of the Lagos electricity law had been completed and was before the state’s House of Assembly for consideration.

Odusote explained that the bill, when implemented, would take regulation of electricity from the centre and domicile it with the Lagos regulatory agency.

“The Nigerian constitution domiciles the responsibility of regulation and distribution of electricity with the state government but when the law was passed in 2002, many states were not ready for the responsibility.

“Many housing estates in the state run on diesel generators because they are unable to benefit from the grid, yet they cannot share from the excess capacity they currently have because the Federal Government does not permit it.

“Lagos is now ready, willing and in the process of passing the law. It means we will be able to locally determine our faith when it comes to electricity,” he said.

According to him, the Lagos Regulatory Agency will work with the residents and the state government to determine the need of the electricity market and make laws that will enable investors to invest in identified gaps.

The commissioner said the state was working with the Federal Government to ensure its laws were reviewed and the new law passed at the National Assembly aligned with the state’s law and in line with the development of the sector.

Odusote explained that the state was working with the built environment and other private sector operators to create a framework that would ensure that by 2036, everybody that wanted electricity in Lagos got it.

On her part, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Mrs Toke Benson Awoyinka promised that LASRERA will sustain the use of sanctions to rid the industry of fraudulent Real Estate Agents.

She added that the state government was determined to ensure sanity was restored to its real estate environment.

Politics / Independent Campaign Group Floated In Lagos For Tinubu, Sanwo-olu by OLUDERU: 8:04pm On Nov 25, 2022
Tayo Ayinde, Baba Eto lead grassroots campaign for APC candidates

An Independent Campaign Group (ICG) has been floated in Lagos State for the re-election of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the actualisation of the presidential ambition of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Frontline politician and Christian leader, Cardinal James Odunmbaku, popularly known as Baba Eto, is the chairman of the independent group whose role will be complementary to the ongoing campaign of the Lagos APC.

Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, who led similar effort in 2018, is the Director General of the ICG. Ayinde will be overseeing the activities of all the directorates under the group.

The ICG was constituted purposely for the mobilisation of voters at the grassroots level towards meeting the target of five million votes for the party in the presidential candidate and to deliver votes across Lagos councils for the party’s governorship flag bearer.

Odunmbaku said the mandate of the ICG was to create a penetrating structure that would independently take the party’s campaign activities to the grassroots. He said the group’s mission was to operate from the grassroots to the top level.

He said: “Our work is a simple but technical one, because we operate from the grassroots to the top level. This Independent Campaign Group is an assembly of grassroots volunteers and mobilisers working for the actualisation of the presidential ambition of our leader, Asiwaju Tinubu, and for the re-election of our performing Governor Sanwo-Olu.

“Everyone appointed into this group has been given the charge to engage Lagosians on our message. They have shown their readiness to work and take the campaign to the voters in theirs abodes. Our operation and activities are independent of the party’s ongoing campaign but we will be working in complementary to the campaign activities of the party.”

Heads of the 60 directorates in the group were sworn in on Friday at its office in GRA, Ikeja.

Bashorun Sikiru Alabi-McFoy is the Deputy Director General. Chairman of Conference 57 in Lagos, Hon. Kolade Alabi, is the adviser to the group m.

There are four Assistant Directors-General for the ICG in the three senatorial districts, with Lagos West having two Deputy DGs to oversee the group’s activities in Badagry and Ikeja divisions.

Jubril Gawat, an influential social media user and Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Sanwo-Olu on New Media, leads the Directorate of Digital Communications.

Politics / Jandor: And The Needless Politics Of Lies And Deceits. by OLUDERU: 9:55pm On Oct 24, 2022
My attention has been drawn to a Facebook post by the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP Dr. Olajide Adeniran 'Jandor' in one of his recent posts after his campaign visit to Badagry where he erroneously claimed that Ajido, one of the ancient and foremost communities is threatened by flooding and also lacks basic amenities.

While it is becoming the norm to make spurious claims to woo voters during campaigns, I want to set the records straight on the unfounded claims made by Jandor in the misleading posts.

On his way in and out of Ajido to campaign, Jandor and his team certainly drove on the reconstructed Aradagun-Imeke-Ajido-Epeme road. That road is one of the legacy projects of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration. The construction of that road has opened up Ajido and Iworo communities for tourism and commercial purposes.

The reconstruction of Aradagun-Imeke-Ajido-Epeme road has also opened up the Tourism potentials of the communities along this axis all the way to Whispering Palms and as part of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration THEMEs agenda to promote tourism, by supporting the Ajido Zangbeto festivals.

Secondly, Jandor claimed in that misleading post that Ajido community has only one primary school. Again, that claim is factually incorrect. There are two primary schools and one secondary school in Ajido main town; L.A Primary School Ajido, Unity Primary School Ajido and Iworo-Ajido Model College. There are other two primary schools in the neighboring communities under Ajido Ward; Seabeach Primary School in Jegeme village and L. A. Primary School in Akarakumo village. These public schools are all functional with a combine total of nine (9) newly constructed blocks of six (6) classrooms with toilets and furniture.

Ajido community also have functional townhall renovated by my administration and also a functional Primary Health Centre in addition to the PHC donated by the West Africa Gas Company (WAPCO).

Jandor also claimed that Ajido community is threatened by flooding. I take it that Jandor is not conversant with rising tide of water at the riverbank around this time of the year obtainable in communities close to lagoon. Even with this development, I make bold to say that at no time has Ajido experienced flooding at any time of the year.

A community with motorable access road equipped with functional traffic light, functional townhall, four primary schools, a secondary school, primary health Centres and a revenue generating company like West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO), Lagos State Public Works Coporation Asphalt Plant is not neglected by the government as Jandor claimed in his post.

Politics / Lasg Set To Construct New Airport On Lekki-epe Axis by OLUDERU: 6:09pm On Oct 07, 2022
The Lagos State Government has declared its readiness to construct a new airport on the Lekki-Epe axis of the State.

The Special Adviser Governor on Public Private Partnerships (PPP), Mr. Ope George disclosed this while speaking at a media parley organised by the State Government and held at Alausa, Ikeja on Thursday.

He revealed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led government has sought and obtained approval from the Federal Government for the construction of the new airport in Lagos.

According to him, the project, which is expected to take off in the year 2023 will be constructed on 3,500 hectares of land, noting that the master plan and aeronautical designs are in place; while studies are ongoing about strategies, funding and other issues, after which the project will be taken to the market place.

Nairaland / General / Jandor’s Desperation Is Appalling by OLUDERU: 12:00pm On Sep 18, 2022
Our attention has been drawn to the recent characteristic charade of the PDP governorship candidate in Lagos state, Jide Adediran.
It’s saddening that Jandor and his deputy, Funke Akindele, have graduated from playing politics with human lives to blatantly encouraging the break down of law and order in our dear state.

The visit to citizens who paid the price for violating state traffic laws, compensating , inducing and encouraging them is an act that’s totally unacceptable in any decent society.

The move of Jandor amounts to turning compassion and charity on its head.
It was pathetic that he simply interpreted the loss of his hosts to having their means of livelihood taken away from them when in actual fact, people have lost their lives to accidents as a result of driving against traffic.

However, we are not surprised by the promotion of lawlessness by the opposition party as it remains consistent with their desperation as we count down to the next elections.
Their role in the spread of Covid with the promotion and sponsorship of needless mass gatherings- ENDSARS- during pandemic and the social events hosted by his deputy, Funke Akindele are pointers to the lawlessness of the duo and their party.
We expect Funke to be eternally grateful to the state governor for receiving less than a slap on her wrist for a life threatening crime against the state.

There’s no doubt that good governance can only thrive where law and order prevail.

We recommend the recent honest admission of the former national deputy chairman of PDP, Chief Bode George, that the opposition party has no hope of winning elections in the South West to the political neophytes so that they can put their desperation in check.

They may wish to note that Lagosians are not fooled by their constantly playing to the gallery because they have nothing to offer.

Our government has the political will and duty to uphold the state laws at all times without succumbing to needless blackmail in the name of irresponsible politicking.

Politics / Ndigbo Progressive Movement Warns Against Oct 1st Rally In Lekki by OLUDERU: 6:06pm On Sep 14, 2022
“Peaceful co-existence in Lagos must not be destroyed”

Supporters and Members of the Labour Party Presidential Candidate have been warned not to embark on the planned rally on October 1st in Lekki Lagos..

The warning was handed down on Wednesday by the National president of the group,Mazi Akuna Uche Aloysius in a press release made available to journalists in Lagos, stressing that the planned rally and the threat of a counter rally by some other groups will ultimately affect the peaceful atmosphere in Lagos as well as co-existence of all ethnic nationalities residing in the state of aquatic splendor.

Mazi Akuna equally restated that the planned rally at the Lekki Toll gate will be a sad reminder of the unfortunate mayhem that happened two years ago ,which unfortunately led to destruction of life and property by some misguided youth.

According to Mazi Akuna " we want to warn these faceless characters to stop this planned rally as it's an attempt to cause another mayhem in this state. We won't fail to call the attention of those in authority not to allow the state be thrown into mayhem, using political campaign to achieve their inordinate ambitions. "

Furthermore " the mayhem unleashed on Lagos in October 2020 is still yet to heal,so converging at the place for any political engagement now is tantamount to playing on the graves of those supposedly murdered at the Lekki as well as the police officers and men killed in line of their official duties. Lagos is yet to get it fully back from the wanton destruction of that incident..", Mazi said.

Conclusively, the group urged the police to ensure that such ill conceived rally does not hold ,to prevent a repeat of the madness that characterized the ENDSARS debacle in Lagos state..

Nairaland / General / Notice To The Public On Circulating Audio Message by OLUDERU: 11:05pm On Aug 28, 2022
Following our review of the audio in circulation which sounded staged, ordinarily, LASAA will not respond to such petty conversation but it is important to reassure our stakeholders and members of the general public that we are an institution governed by rules and professional standards of practice.

While we understand this is a political season and Fifth Columnist will attempt to portray us in a bad light for their own personal gain, we will not rest on our oars to speak the truth always and discharge our functions with integrity and absolute respect for statutory laws and ethics.

We wish to vehemently debunk the contents of the audio recording against our Agency that is in circulation as a blatant lie and a staged conversation.

As citizens, we must continue to act responsibly and disassociate ourselves from elements disguising as purveyors of truth on social media platforms.

It is important to remind the general public that, Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) is the body saddled with the responsibility to regulate advertising contents, and, as a result can stop any unethical, obscene advertisement, campaign, politics and so on from being displayed, not LASAA.

Our Agency does not interfere in the business of outdoor advertising agencies in any way. It is, therefore, a common practice in the industry that any contract to display political campaigns is at the discretion of the outdoor advertisement agency that owns the billboard structure and the advertiser.

For the purpose of clarity, this is the season for more sales within the industry and it is the income made by the owners, their financial obligation to LASAA will be settled.

We only issue permit on regulated billboard structures and not the advertisements displayed on them. Anyone with proof to show that we gave such instruction in the audio should bring it to our attention immediately.

Members of the public are advised to kindly, disregard the audio in circulation and be watchful of fake news.

Thank you.

Nairaland / General / Food Security: Sanwo-olu Flags Off Construction Of Biggest Logistics Hub In Epe by OLUDERU: 11:47pm On Aug 24, 2022
Lagos Reducing Vulnerability to Food Shortages’ - Agric Commissioner

Lagos State has flagged off the construction of what will be the largest Food Security Systems and Central Logistics Park in sub-Saharan Africa.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, performed the sod turning at the site of the facility being built on 1.2 million square metres of land in Ketu-Ereyun, Epe.

Establishment of the food park is a component of an audacious five-year Agricultural and Food Systems Road Map (2021–2025) launched last year by the Sanwo-Olu administration to enhance food sufficiency in Lagos.

When completed, the central food and logistics hub is expected to create direct wealth for more than five million traders in the agricultural value chain, while guaranteeing uninterrupted food supplies to more than 10 million Lagosians, at least 90 days, in a period of scarcity.

The hub will have storage facilities for more than 1,500 trucks that will daily service the needs of thousands of operators within food value chain throughout the year, while large commercial transactions would be processed in the facility.

Besides, Sanwo-Olu visited the site of the State-owned Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Ketu-Ereyun, where the Governor inspected the level of construction work on the project.

Transactions on food items in Lagos are estimated to be N5 trillion yearly, just as farmers daily lose 40 per cent of produce worth millions due to lack of post-harvest storage system.

Sanwo-Olu said the central food hub would guarantee greater returns for farmers and investors in the agro-allied sector, as the facility would cut out several layers of middlemen and facilitate improved access to modern processing and packaging services.

The Governor said market matrix generated from the facility would help the Government generate useful data for public planning and for the use of private sector players to project investment.

He said: “Today’s flag-off of the Food Security Systems and Central Logistics Park is proof of our administration’s commitment to addressing the challenges of stakeholders in the Agri-space and giving hope to the people through improved quality of life. I make bold to say this is one of the most important interventions in agricultural sector that Nigeria has ever seen. The fact that this project is taking off in Lagos, the fastest-
growing sub-national entity, means that it is bound to have significant national, regional, and continental impact.

“This hub will provide a better buying experience for consumers, help achieve a reduction in logistics costs, while guaranteeing the standardisation of quantity and quality for agricultural products. It also will improve productivity, guarantee greater returns for farmers, by cutting out several layers of middlemen. It will facilitate improved access to modern processing and packaging services for farmers and generate useful data for the use of government agencies, private sector players, and multilateral agencies.”

Sanwo-Olu said the choice of the location for the project was strategic, given its easy access and proximity to agrarian settlements. He said the State had secured a well thought out funding scheme to kick off the project, which he promised will be delivered in last quarter of 2024.

Lagos agricultural road map, the Governor said, sought to take full advantage of all value chains in which the State has competitive and comparative advantages, with a view to scale up self-sufficiency in food production from 18 to 40 per cent.

The Governor said the hub, when completed, would add to the catalogue of life-changing projects sited within Epe Division, which include 32-metric tons per hour Rice Mill in Imota, Agbowa-Ikosi Timberville, and Ketu-Ereyun Psychiatric Hospital, among others.

“The development of this all-important Central Logistics Hub will be achieved through a collaboration between the State Government and the private sector and will be implemented through a Design-Build-Finance-Operate-and-Transfer model. At every step of the way, we will be counting on the contributions of the private sector, in terms of financing and technical advisory and support,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Commissioner for Agriculture, Abisola Olusanya, said the current global food shortages were parts of the harsh consequences of climate change and global warming, which, he said, had led to economic instability in some countries.

The Commissioner stressed that a continuous disruption in food distribution sequence could portend catastrophic consequences on security of the people, pointing out that Lagos initiated the agricultural plan to protect its residents from the effects of food shortages. The only way forward, she said, is to build a resilience that will protect Lagos.

“Upon completion, the Central Food and Logistics Park will unleash the potential in both the upstream and downstream of agricultural sector. This project will further reaffirm the leadership of Lagos as the first destination for agricultural produce along the West African corridor,” Olusanya said.

The project partner, Origin Group, assured the first phase of the project, which requires building storage facilities, would be delivered in the next seven months.

The hub will be operated on off-grid power source of 900 megawatts, and is expected to provide 16,000 direct jobs.

Amenities that will come to the facility include aggregation facilities, administrative offices, trading area, packaging facilities, processing facilities, cold chain/dry goods services, and logistics services.

Others are trailer park, water treatment plant, health centre, fuel station, fire station, abattoir and lairage.

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to ending the gridlock on Mile 2 - Tincan axis, assuring stakeholders that attention would be focused on Apapa until there is a free flow of traffic in the area.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, gave the assurance during an inspection tour of the Mile 2 - Tincan section of the Apapa /Oshodi Expressway, explaining that despite the success recorded in managing traffic flow in and out of Apapa Port, the State Government is committed to resolving all the challenges plaguing the ongoing construction along the route.

Giwa stated that the concerns of the Truckers and the construction company, HITEC, have been noted by the Traffic Management Enforcement Team, adding that the parties will be engaged to create and implement a lasting solution to reduce the gridlock on the lane inbound Tincan Port.

Giving an assurance that the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration will continue its engagements with all stakeholders, Giwa envisaged that issues relating to the construction of the port access roads would be resolved to facilitate seamless movement in and out of Apapa environs.

The Special Adviser reiterated that Okada operations are still prohibited in Apapa despite recalcitrant riders seen flouting the ban, assuring that penalties will be meted out by the security formations charged with enforcing the ban across the 10 Local Government Areas of the State.

Also speaking, the Port Manager, HITEC, Mr. Willie Barkhuisen, declared that with the support of the State Government, the company will complete rehabilitation works along the Mile 2 - Tincan axis in two months.

Politics / Lasg Disbands M.o.t Enforcement Team by OLUDERU: 8:48pm On Aug 12, 2022
The Lagos Ministry of Transportation has placed an indefinite ban on the operations of its enforcement team tagged M.O.T Taskforce.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, stated that the decision was reached after a thorough appraisal and review of the enforcement teams operating under the Ministry of Transportation.

Giwa explained that the ban is part of measures initiated to streamline transport enforcement activities in Lagos State to achieve the required effectiveness in line with global best practices, warning that the ban is not an excuse for drivers to disobey the traffic laws of the State.

The Special Adviser averred that Traffic Management and Transportation is a cardinal pillar in the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda of the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stressing that the readjustment of the enforcement strategy was to enhance service delivery to the people of the State.

He, therefore, enjoined the general public to report the activities of any unauthorised enforcement team still operating with the tag M.O.T Taskforce to the Ministry of Transportation for prosecution.

Appealing to Lagosians to cooperate with the State Government in its effort to improve the traffic situation across the metropolis, the Special Adviser gave an assurance that a lot is ongoing behind the scene to bring the much-desired change in the transport sector.

Properties / Lagos Begins Deconstruction Of Three Structures On Ikoyi Building Collapse Site by OLUDERU: 4:30pm On Jun 16, 2022
Lagos State Government, on Thursday, is set to deconstruct the three uncompleted high-rise structures on the site of a 21-storey building that collapsed on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, last November.

The structures have failed integrity tests, prompting the State Government to embark on a controlled deconstruction to bring them down.

A structural engineering firm, Edge of Design, will dismantle the twin 14-storey and eight-storey structures on the site in a manner that will not pose any health or environmental hazards to residents in the neighbourhood.

The deconstruction, which is expected to be completed within 90 days, is to be supervised by relevant agencies of the Government and private stakeholders in the built industry.

The development, it was learnt, is part of the recommendations by a six-man panel that investigated the collapse of the 21-storey structure owned by Messrs Fourscore Heights.

The land on which the failed structures sit has been forfeited to the State Government by law. The panel also recommended criminal prosecution of the developer for contravening the State’s building codes.

No fewer than 45 persons, who were mainly construction workers and vendors, died in the incident. Also, the developer, Mr Femi Osibona, died in the collapsed building.

Representative of the contractor, Edge of Design, Mr. Olujimi Lewu, explained the step-by-step process to be employed in bringing down the structures, that the work would be done without any injury or fatality. He illustrated how the slabs would be removed, until the structures come down.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, at a press briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Government Secretariat in Alausa, said safety would be the main consideration in the deconstruction. He said the press conference was in the spirit of transparency for which the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Oku administration is famous.

He stressed that the deconstruction was agreed upon after extensive consultations with stakeholders, residents and regulators in the built industry.

The Commissioner assured residents in the neighbourhood of their safety throughout the exercise, noting that measures had been put in place to ensure that the contractor maintains the agreed safety protocols.

“The deconstruction will be done with one key focus from all stakeholders; this is safety of people in the neighbourhood and everybody that will be working on the site. The recommendations of the panel are being implemented to prevent this kind of incident,” Omotoso said.

Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Tayo Bamgbose-Martins, a civil engineer, assured all that reports on the deconstruction would be regularly shared with the public. He described the contractor as competent.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, shed light on why the State Government took over the property, saying: “Section 74 of the Urban and Regional Planning and Development Laws of Lagos State 2019 (as amended) prescribes that any property that collapses in the State is automatically forfeited to the Government.”

Salako said the State Government had not decided on what to do with the site after the deconstruction.

He said: “When the State Government is ready to revive the site, we will let the public know what we want to do with it. However, I can assure you that the land will not be given to any individual developer or converted to unapproved use by the Government. The site will be used for something that will be of benefit the public.”

After the press briefing, the Government’s team moved to Ikoyi to hand over the site to the contractor

Politics / Ndigbo Is Not Under Any Attack In Lagos by OLUDERU: 10:34am On Jun 12, 2022
The president of Ohanaeze Lagos, Chief Solomon AGUENE, has debunked the rumour that the Igbo are under attack in Lagos.

There is nothing like that, the leader of all Igbo in the state has said. What appeared to have caused the rumour is the problem arising from the collection of voters cards. Aguene appealed to the Governor Babajide Sanwo -Olu to intervene in the matter so that the Igbo in Ojo, Ikotun and some other suburbs in Lagos can get their cards without stress at INEC registration centers.

Chief OGBONNA asserted that contrary to the claims in the social media, the Igbo have no threat to their peace in Lagos.

He recalled that at the last two general meetings of Ohanaeze held in Calabar Hall, Ajao Road, more than 1,500 attendees endorsed Governor Sanwo-Olu for second term, adding that it is only through the acquisition of PVCs that Igbo in Lagos can massively vote for the All Progressives Congress(APC).

According to Chief Ogbonna, Ohanaeze, the apex Igbo socio -cultural organization , in its bid to sensitize Igbo in Lagos to their civic responsibility, made the acquisition of PVCs mandatory for full membership of the organization.
According to the Igbo leader,
Governor Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated love and strong attachment to the Igbo living in Lagos, hence the huge support for his administration.

The Igbo ethnic nationality is not in contention with any tribe, he said, reiterating the harmony, cordiality and friendliness that have existed between the Igbo in Lagos and their Yoruba hosts. He said the Igbo have invested massively in the development of Lagos and would not do anything that can jeopardize these investments.
The Apex leader of Ndigbo in Lagos called on the Governor and the members of the public to disregard statements or information purportedly issued on behalf of Igbo people in Lagos from any individual or group which does not emanate from the office of the President of Ohanaeze Lagos or the secretariat at James Robertson Street,Surulere, Lagos.

Politics / Sanwo-Olu's Okada Ban: 16 Points To Know by OLUDERU: 7:42pm On May 20, 2022
1.   Progress achieved in commercial motorcycles (Okada) restriction under the administration of Governor Babatunde Fashola was reversed between 2015 and 2019. The menace festered to an alarming level, just before the inception of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration in 2019.

2.   On February 1, 2020, Sanwo-Olu-led Government announced a ban on Okada in six Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Nine Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

3.   On February 27, 2020, Lagos State recorded the first case of Covid-19, which preceded an extensive nationwide lockdown. The attendant economic paralysis created a survival struggle for many low-income earners in Lagos.

4.  Between February and September 2020, the slow economic recovery within this period affected many residents, leading the Government to assist struggling families with palliatives. The Okada ban was still in force, but the enforcement was weakened by the plight of struggling residents.

5.   On October 2020, the crises that resulted from the nationwide EndSARS protest, which was more pronounced in Lagos, emboldened Okada riders to return in droves to roads, highways and bridges where they had been banned.

6.   The police, which led the enforcement against Okada, withdrew from the roads for weeks. The situation led to the influx of commercial motorcycle riders from different parts of the country.

7.   On May 18, 2021, Lagos Government launched the First and Last Mile Buses as safe alternatives on routes where Okada had been restricted.

8.  From January 2021 to March 2022, there was some enforcement, which resulted in fatalities.

9.  On September 24, 2021, a group of Okada riders killed a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Kazeem Abonde, in Ajao Estate during a violent encounter between the police and some riders.

10. Similar violent clashes are usually recorded during enforcement in notorious areas where Okada riders operate on restricted routes.

11.  Before the new pronouncement, Okada menace had assumed a disturbing level in Lagos, with residents asking the Government to ban this mode of transportation for safety and security reasons.

12.  The riders have become lawless. They disrespect traffic laws and regulations.

13.  They get violent at the slightest provocation, inciting mob actions and jungle justice in which many innocent people have died.

14. On May 18, 2022, Governor Sanwo-Olu affirmed that Okada remained banned in Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Surulere, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, and Apapa. The ban also extends to all LCDAs under the listed councils as well as all major roads, highways and bridges.

16. From June 1, 2022, there will be a sweeping enforcement of the Okada ban in all the listed councils and LCDAs.

Politics / June 1 Deadline Won’t Stop Enforcement by OLUDERU: 7:21pm On May 20, 2022
JUNE 1 DEADLINE WON’T STOP ENFORCEMENT

The seizure of commercial motorcycles by the Lagos State Task Force will continue, despite the June 1 deadline issued by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for them to leave six Local Government Areas. The six local governments are: Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Apapa and Surulere.

The deadline does not invalidate the provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, which states that “no persons shall ride, drive or propel a motorcycle or tricycle on a major highway within the State, and any person in contravention of this provision commits an offence” and will be made to face the wrath of the law.

The Lagos State Task Force, led by CSP Shola Jejeloye, has continued to enforce the law. It seized 238 motorcycles in Lekki on Tuesday and Wednesday. In Iba on Lagos-Badagry Expressway, where it was violently resisted today, the Task Force seized 195 motorcycles. The riders were operating on highways and bridges in flagrant disobedience of the law because, according to them, they are free to ply unauthorised routes till June 1. This is wrong. The February 1, 2020 directive has not been reversed. The enforcement was weakened by COVID-19, which affected all areas of life. Now, the action is being reinforced.

The government praises Lagosians who have come out to support the ban on commercial motorcycles in the six local government areas, which Governor Sanwo-Olu has described as the “first phase” of the action triggered by safety and security concerns.

Politics / Lagos First Lady To Lead War Against Drug Abuse In Schools, Communities by OLUDERU: 7:49pm On May 12, 2022
… Holds Strategic Meeting with NDLEA, Other Stakeholders

Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has pledged to work with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other critical stakeholders to reinvigorate the war against drug abuse, especially in schools and communities across the state.

The First Lady made the pledge on Wednesday at a strategic meeting held in Lagos House, Ikeja, with the NDLEA and other critical stakeholders, including the Wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, senior officials of the Ministries of Education, Health, Youths and Social Development, wives of Local Government Chairmen, Police Officers Wives Association (POWA), School Principals, Market Women and the Medical Director of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Dr. Gbenga Owoeye.

According to her, drug addiction, especially among the youths, has become a worrisome menace in society that no one could longer pretend about its existence.

In her words: “The earlier we begin to tackle the daunting challenge, the better for our youths, ourselves and the social health of our society. This strategic meeting is aimed at putting the menace of drug abuse and associated social vices on the front burner”.

“We are truly and deeply concerned about the increase in the rate at which the younger ones are now getting addicted to illicit drugs, a development that brought about the need for all relevant stakeholders to embark on a campaign to fight the menace and enlighten victims on the dangers inherent in such lifestyle both now and in the future”, the First Lady said.

Maintaining that the time was ripe for real action to tackle the war against drug abuse and not just mere rhetoric, Dr. Sanwo-Olu disclosed that a series of initiatives would be unveiled in the coming weeks to advance the fight against the menace in schools and in communities across the State.

She said: “At the level of the Nigerian Governors' Wives Forum (NGWF), we are all concerned about this and we have resolved in our respective States to frontally confront the menace, looking at it from a holistic point of view”.

“We have to be proactive and connect with the schools, the religious bodies, community leaders and associations and others to cascade the message to all segments and sectors of the State”, Mrs. Sanwo-Olu asserted.

On his part, Commander of the NDLEA, Lagos State Command, Barr. Callys Alumona, commended the First Lady for convening the meeting of relevant stakeholders to advance the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA), noting that something urgent must be done to prevent Lagos from becoming a gateway for illicit and dangerous drugs, both within and outside Nigeria.

He also urged the First Lady to organise a training workshop for women in government who are mothers themselves, as well as political and social leaders, to enable them to have a better understanding of the consequences of drug abuse and the signs to note when a child is engaging in drug abuse or illicit dealing in drugs.

Politics / Igbo Traders To Sanwo-olu: ‘we Want You Again’ by OLUDERU: 11:00pm On May 05, 2022
•‘Endorsement a vote of confidence in our Greater Lagos effort’ - Lagos Gov

•Expose counterfeiters in your markets, Okonkwo charges traders

An amalgamation of Igbo traders across 58 major markets in Lagos State, on Thursday, passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, endorsing the Governor’s second term bid.

The traders, under the aegis of Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association, said although Sanwo-Olu had not formally informed them of his second term bid, they unanimously support the Governor’s re-election in appreciation of the State Government’s business policies and infrastructure development which support their trades.

Sanwo-Olu got the endorsement at the 2022 All Markets Conference organised by the association in Amuwo Odofin area of the State.

President of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo in Lagos, Chief Solomon Ogbonna, led his chiefs to the event also attended by market leaders and traders from all the 58 Igbo markets in Lagos.

In a passionate address to the Governor, Secretary General of Ndigboamaka traders’ association, Comrade Chinedu Ukatu, said: “Mr. Governor, you have not formally told us whether you are seeking re-election or not, but I want to tell you that all the market leaders seated here today are yearning for a second term for you.

“Anytime you walk, we will walk with you. I have been directed by all market leaders under the auspices of Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association in all the 58 dealer markets, to tell you that we have endorsed you for second term to show appreciation for your friendly policy and infrastructure projects initiated to help our businesses.”

Sanwo-Olu described the endorsement as a mark of general acceptance of his administration’s efforts to deliver ‘Greater Lagos’ and strengthen the culture of good governance for which the State is reputed.

The support, he said, comes with an assurance of more development programmes to be expected from his administration.

The Governor promised not to take the Ndigbo’s support for granted, while re-assuring them of the State Government’s continued collaboration to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

Sanwo-Olu said Igbo traders remained prominent players in the economic growth of the State, noting that Lagos’ development narrative would not be complete without the mention of entrepreneurial spirit of the Igbo.

He said: “This is another moment for our Government to recognise our Ndigbo brothers and sisters for their commitment to the growth and development of Lagos. Certainly, Ndigbo traders have been part of the good story of Lagos; your entrepreneurial spirit is second to none and the Igbo enterprising spirit has become a case study in Harvard, which is the biggest business school in the world.

“Contribution to the livelihood of your host communities have been acknowledged and in Lagos, we have created together an economy that has continued to grow and position our nation as the biggest economy in Africa. Trading is a veritable link between producers and consumers, which is the area the Ndigbo traders have tirelessly worked to define the growth trajectory of our dear State. I’m happy that our modest interventions for more growth in this area are visible and being recognised.”

Sanwo-Olu pledged that his administration would continue to protect the business interests of the Igbo people, while promising to make the State habitable for non-indigenes that abide by the laws of the State.

He said his administration would continue to seek peaceful co-existence among all ethnic nationalities cohabiting in Lagos, stressing that the ethnic groups must see themselves as different sides of a coin that shouldn’t have anything against one another.

He said: “We have to come to the understanding that we all have different roles to play in keeping Lagos safe for business and living. We are all important stakeholders in Lagos project, whether it is Government, traders and private sector individual. We must continue to foster peace and harmony through an avenue like this conference, using the interaction to make Lagos better for everyone of us.”

Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Dr. Wale Ahmed, said the State Government regarded informal markets as important sector of the State’s economy, stressing that the conference created the platform to address challenging issues plaguing commercial activities across markets.

Represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Kikelomo Sanyaolu, the Commissioner said markets management in Lagos had been structured with policies to engender economic growth.

“April last year, we inaugurated a 21-member Lagos State Market Advisory Council (LASMAC) with the responsibility of managing the affairs of markets in the State, in line with the international best practices, thus helping to acquaint the traders and other stakeholders with the policies of this administration. The Council took cognizance of the various socio-cultural settings in markets across the State and Mr. Governor ensured that various communities were brought on board to represent different socio-cultural interests and affinities,” the Commissioner said.

Frontline businessman and chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Dr. Obiora Okonkwo, said the conference offered opportunities to engage policymakers and political administrators in charge of the commerce to lobby for regulatory actions that would further ease business activities.

Okonkwo specifically charged traders to cooperate with the Government and regulatory agencies in exposing counterfeiters in their markets.

President of Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association, Chief Jude Okeke, made a case for trade incentives for marketers, stressing that the economy would not flourish without the contribution of informal traders.

“This conference will create an opportunity to strengthen cooperation and collaboration between tradesmen and government agencies to forge a common front in promoting growth of the economy,” Okeke said.

Politics / Tinubu Remains Our Rallying Point, Says Sanwo-olu As Amaechi Visits Lagos by OLUDERU: 10:44pm On Apr 28, 2022
Flash:2023: Tinubu Remains Our Rallying Point, Says Sanwo-Olu As Amaechi Visits Lagos

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, has informed Rotimi Ameachi, a presidential hopeful, that the ambition of Bola Tinubu is the “rallying point” of the state.

The governor spoke on Thursday in Marina, Lagos, where he received the minister of transportation.

Amaechi and Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos, are presidential hopefuls on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sanwo-Olu, who wished the minister well in his presidential ambition, noted that he’s eminently qualified for the top job.

The Lagos governor, however, said he is a “direct beneficiary” of Tinubu’s leadership, and as such, the state will support him to become Nigeria’s next president.

“I have sheer regard and respect for our leader, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu. I have been a direct beneficiary of his leadership. I have been part of his cabinet,” he said.

“Personally I continue to tow that line of leadership and what he stands for.

“I want to say to you that you’re eminently qualified and I want to wish you well in this journey. Clearly, for all of us in Lagos state, Asiwaju continues to be our rallying point, but the country is our country and we must continue to see it as the one that is indivisible and the one that we all rally round.

“I certainly know too well what your pedigree is and what you have done.”

Responding, Ameachi said it took a lot of courage to visit Lagos because he recognises Tinubu’s influence in the state.

“It is a difficult thing to even come here because we already know that our leader comes from Lagos state. And you come from that family of our leader,” he said.

“We know that our leader is eminently qualified to rule this country. He has led Lagos state.”

On April 9, Amaechi declared his intention to run for the office of president, describing his decision as a “moral duty to give what I can in the service of my country”.

Months prior, Bola Tinubu, an APC chieftain, had announced his “life-long” ambition to lead the country.

Nairaland / General / Lasbca Demolishes Two Distressed Buildings by OLUDERU: 9:50pm On Apr 15, 2022
The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has demolished two distressed buildings in furtherance of its commitment to rid the State of non-conforming structures.

The General Manager, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, confirmed that the demolition of two, three-floor structures located at 151, Itire Road and 14, Akinwunmi Street, both in Mushin area of the State, is part of efforts at achieving the vision of zero-tolerance of building collapse in the State.

Oki said: "The affected buildings were identified as being highly distressed as far back as last year but in spite of all efforts by the Agency to prevail on the recalcitrant owners of the affected buildings to toe the line of due processes and best practices in consonance with LASBCA regulations, including conducting Non-Destructive Tests, the owners did not respond and the Agency had to be proactive in removing the buildings in order to avert a collapse".

Emphasising that the decision was taken after a thorough engineering appraisal and monitoring carried out by the Agency across the State, Oki said the exercise was to ensure a better physical planning environment for sustainable development and averting needless loss of lives and property.

His words; "People have shown disregard for the State Laws on building construction in the past of which the resultant effects are worrisome. This has to stop for all to enjoy safe and habitable buildings without worries or fear of collapse".

He, therefore, appealed to building owners and developers to desist from starting projects without obtaining Building Planning Approvals, seeking authorisation from LASBCA, hiring the services of relevant professionals and generally abiding by the building laws and codes of the State.

Oki also called on owners and developers of existing buildings to cultivate the habit of good maintenance culture, carry out engineering appraisal where necessary and obtain Certificate of Completion and Fitness for Habitation, which will certify that the building is fit for habitation and assure would-be occupants of a safe and secure environment.

Politics / Lekki Concession Company Limited Resumes Tolling At Ikoyi Link Bridge by OLUDERU: 7:30pm On Apr 01, 2022
Following months of engagement with key stakeholders within Eti-Osa /Lekki-Epe area, Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC) hereby officially announces the formal return to tolling operations on Friday, 1st April, 2022 at the Ikoyi Link Bridge Toll Plaza. However, toll payment will not commence until 16th April 2022.

LCC has been a worthy part of the Eti-Osa/ Lekki-Epe ecosystem and has served the community relentlessly and to the best of its ability over the years. We are encouraged by the response and the cooperation received from the vast majority of residents and stakeholders who appreciate the value we bring to bear on their daily movement and continue to register for (or update ) their toll accounts in readiness for the commencement of cashless toll collection. All the points made at the engagements are well taken.

Whilst LCC is aware of the concerns expressed by some stakeholders regarding the return to tolling, it is common knowledge that the government cannot, on its own, meet all the infrastructural needs of the ever-growing population.

Given that the funding for the project was secured by the initial private sector sponsors and contracts were signed with various local and international financial institutions, in the spirit of respecting the sanctity of contracts, the Lagos State Government continues to meet these obligations when it bought over the shares of LCC, thereby taking over both the assets and liabilities.

To ensure a smooth return, LCC has deployed new and more efficient technology at the Ikoyi Bridge Toll Plaza. Therefore, to test run the new system and ensure a seamless interface with road users, the first two weeks will be completely toll - free.
LCC remains committed to providing a safer and better driving experience on the Ikoyi Link Bridge.
Thank you.
Signed

Yomi Omomuwasan,
MD/ CEO LCC
