Education / Lifestyle :things You Need To Know Before Learning A New Language by oluwaseunidris(m): 5:17pm On Sep 13, 2017
Are you dreaming of and working towards becoming multilingual? That sounds great! There is nothing wrong with your ambition, but we all know that it is not going to be an easy road. If you desire to be part of a reputable and established translation company, there are some things you need to know before learning a new language.

Consider this a fun fact type of post, but hopefully, you will take a lesson or two from this. Being multilingual is fun, and sure the ride is a roller coaster one.

Set SMART goals

As always taught by our mentors and teachers, we should always set SMART goals in everything. The initials stand for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-based. Our goal is to learn and be fluent in a foreign language of our interest. As much as we want to, not all people can do it within a month or two. Do not frustrate and pressure yourself too much. Set SMART goals.

Read and watch films that use the foreign language

One way to effectively gain vocabulary words is by immersing yourself in the language. You may do it by reading literature and watching films that utilize the foreign language of your choice. This exercise is helpful to test your proficiency and efficiency. Try if you can understand the whole text or portion of the film without any translator in hand.

Love your native language first

Like what others used to say - how can you love someone else if you don't love yourself first. Some may argue that it is "selfless" love but isn't it selfish in some way? That you need the affection and validation of others first? Anyway, going back to the topic, you can't fully appreciate a foreign language if you haven't mastered your native tongue. Exert effort in learning your native language the same way as you do to a foreign language.

Talk to locals or visit the place where it is the primary language

If you are learning French, going to France, Quebec or other parts of the world that speak the language is a little pricey. Experts agree that the best way for you to learn a new language is by practice and immersion. However, as it is quite expensive to travel and live on a foreign land, you still have the option to talk to locals. Maximize the power of social media and other applications that help you connect with locals.

Remind yourself why are you doing this in the first place

So if you aspire to work for a good translation company, you get to take things seriously. You are maybe doing this for fun, and additional language and that enough should keep you motivated. When things get hard and uninteresting, take a break and remind yourself why you are doing this in the first place.

Your journey in learning a foreign language does not happen in a snap of your fingers. You may be as young as seven and old as seventy, but hey, learning never stops!

Nairaland / General / Ali Baba Explains How He Made His First Millions As A Comedian In Late 90’s by oluwaseunidris(m): 1:08pm On Mar 27, 2017
A popularly knowned Nigerian comedian, Atunyota Alleluya Akorobomerere, otherwise called Ali Baba, has said that he started making his millions as a stand-up comedian in the late 90’s when the profession was still in its developing stage in the country.
Ali Baba said, on Monday, in Lagos, that comedy business started paying off when people knew little about the profession.
The comedian spoke against the backdrop of an award conferred on him by The Verdant Zeal Quantum Awards at the prestigious Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, on March 22.
“When I got my first endorsement and I was paid about N82,000, someone who saw me with the cheque asked what I do for a living and when I said I am a comedian he was baffled.
“The person did not even have an idea that I had got an endorsement from Guinness Nigeria Plc that was worth about N1.2 million. We don’t need to shout over this.
“The pay from show business is pronounced because some of the younger ones now flaunt their wealth unduly,’’ he said.
Ali Baba added that he was now on another platform and not the regular one people used to see him on.
“I still crack jokes but people won’t see me on the platform they are used to.
“I will be 30 years on stage next year, so I have moved on from the platform people used to see me. I have to leave the platform for upcoming actors.
“It is like a bank structure where there is a cashier attending to costumers, after 20 years you don’t expect to see that cashier still counting money behind the counter.
“When I started, it was only Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), now we have many television stations and radio stations so the platform is bigger and wider,’’ the ace comedian said.
Ali Baba said that he was more into mentoring budding entertainers on the business side of showbiz.
“The thing I do is that I teach by example, a lot of them have watched me perform; professionalism is key and talent is important.
“It is important that you develop your talent, when talent becomes a service that is when people will require it. Nobody will buy a talent if it is not for service.
“I teach other comedians to be humble, focused and think ahead. I expect that others should beat my strides.
“My strides are like foundation for a lot of comedians to grow with but with recent technology, the platform is now wider and accommodating,’’ he said.
Ali Baba said that the current lull in the show business should be a wakeup call for entertainers to be more creative with the profession.
“As a comedian, you need a lot of information which is why we have a lull in the industry now, people don’t create jokes anymore, but are looking for people’s joke.
“It is a wake up for emerging market and for comedians to improve on their act every time and read.
“Once you have information you will grow, so, I teach a lot of them to seek for information which is the only way to sustain them in the profession,’’ he said. (NAN)

Nairaland / General / Check Out The 6 Ways On How To Make Microsd Cards Compatible With Your Android by oluwaseunidris(m): 12:31pm On Mar 27, 2017
MicroSD card is a type of removable card used for storing information. The meaning of SD is an abbreviation of secure Digital. The cards are used on mobile phones, in portable media players, in newer types of handheld Gps devices, digital audio players, expandable USB flash drives, Nintendo DS flash cards, and digital cameras.
There are many microSD cards available in market but not all will work with your Android phone. Here we will share how to ensure the micro SD card you buy will be compatible with your Android phone.

1. Consider the capacity

MicroSD cards are majorly in three types in terms of capacity, which are: SD, SDHC and SDXC; while the SDXC cards range from 32GB to 2TB and can only be in devices that supports SDXC.
Before choosing to buy the one with the largest capacity for your device; you should first check what your capacity of the device supports
The less expensive Android phones are the ones that support SD and SDHC cards, which means you’ll be limited to 32GB max, for example, according to CNET, the following is a list of Android devices and their support capacity, Xperia Z5 compact (200GB), Galaxy S and S7 Edge (200GB), LG V10 (2TB), MOTO G 2015 (32GB), One Touch Idol 3 (32GB).

2. Consider the physical size

When considering this, for example the hardware that supports microSDXC slots will automatically support every size within the microSDXC, but the physical limit is 128GB, anything larger than that may not work.

3. Consider the speed class

After you have considered the capacity, the next thing to do is to consider the speed also. The speed class of a microSD will determine how fast it can write data. MicroSD cards are given one of the four classifications: 2, 4, 6 and 10. The numbers assigned to the card typically correspond to the minimum of the transmission speed of the card, for example if a card is class 2, it’s the minimum transmission speed of 2 Megabytes per second (MB/S). so also for class 4, has minimum speed of 4MB/S, class 6 has the minimum speed of 6MB/S, and class of 10 has the minimum speed of 10MB/S. the speed class can always be found directly on the card’s label, signified as a number (2, 4, 6, 10) inside the letter “c”. you should confirm the speed class of your android device support before purchasing it.

4. Consider UHS classes

In addition to the speed classes mentioned above, there are two Ultra High Speed classes. UHS cards are significantly more expensive and are designed to be used with UHS compatible devices. UHS cards typically have a classifation of either ( UHS-1 class 1) or 3( UHS-1 class 3), with 1 signifying a minimum speed of 10MB/S and 3 a minimum of 30MB/S. The UHS class has two bus types labeled ‘1’ and ‘2’, however the bus type is rare.

5. Consider the labelling

MicroSDHC and microSDXC cards can be any of these three classes, since capacity and speed are not directly related. MicroSD card type (SDHC or SDXC) and the capacity (GB or TB) are directly labeled on the card. The four speed classes mentioned above have logos to signify their minimum speed, for example, class 10 is the letter C with the the number 10 inside. The UHS-1 Class 1 and Class 3 are the letter Uwith a 1 or 3 inside, respectively. Finally, you may also see a ‘I’ or ‘’II’’ labeled on the card, which references a UHS bus speed.

6. Beware of fake cards and cheap brands

Beware of falling in the trap of buying fake memory cards as it’s easy to buy one, be wary of incredible cheap deals on branded cards from non reputable sellers, there are chances that the cards might be fake. Some of the fake cards carry ‘SDHC’ marking but list capacities over 32GB. And some lists the capacities of 256GB but are cheap 4GB cards. To avoid this, it’s advisable to purchase your SD cards from a reputable seller.
In additional, you should equally be wary of cheap no-name brand. Some of the cards from these no-name brands tends to fail and when they do, they take all your data with them. For this reason, it is usually safer to buy cards from big brand. you typically can expect a great reliability and better performance from these cards, and you can also get a warranty from them ( where your card can be replaced if it fails). Popurlar known SanDisk is an example of a good memory card brand.
