Replacement

Following this crash (and a second King Air B350i loss in Kaduna in May 2021 that killed 11, including the Chief of Army Staff), the NAF acquired two Beechcraft King Air 360ER aircraft (delivered 2023–2024) as attrition replacements, to be converted into dedicated ISR platforms with radar, EO/IR sensors, and defensive aids.


So this particular aircraft that crashed in Ondo was not part of the Nigerian Air Force recon and surveillance fleet.

A simple google search tells you the carrying capacity of the ATR 42-500, which is even embedded in its name. However, it is not that complete because few seats were knocked off to accommodate the machine and operator seats.

Initial reports of 32, NAF reports 25 on her manifest, whichever you choose to believe, good sir, expertly tell me how you judged it overloaded.

Incidents like this should not be sensationalized, politicised or tribalised. Look at the logical aspects, not shouting about with information you dont know of like those saying it was overloaded or that it was strictly an ISR aircraft. You are in the right direction.

This is from google after in puting the above question : Yes, in many cases, a maintenance test flight (also called a test flight or functional check flight) is required before an aircraft can return to passenger service after an engine grounding.

The technicians and the higher ups should be held responsive the lives lost giving the history behind the crashed NAF aircraft...but this is Nigeria!.

I have been talking about this since yesterday. This aircraft is Nigeria's premium intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance asset. But the Airforce converted such a sensitive plane into a passenger plane against service rules.

An ISR plane should never have been used for carrying passengers. The question here is, was the Airforce charging people who flew this plane? If so, who was the money being paid to? Did the Nigerian civil aviation authority permit this plane to be used to carry passengers?

For those who don't know, this plane was the airborne command centre for operation Lafiya Dole and Operation Hadin Kai in the war against terrorists in the north east. The plane is equipped with advanced sensors and surveillance equipment for monitoring electronic communications of terrorists and their movements. This is the plane that provides fighter jet pilots and military units on the ground with information about terrorist locations, movements and logistic hubs. The alpha jets we still fly, rely heavily on information the ATR-42MP provides for strike locations.

We can now understand how terrorists can attack Nigerian army bases without their advance being spotted. The plane the Airforce should be using to monitor them, is being used to carry VIPs and passengers around. The commanding officer of 81AMG Benin, where this plane was based, needs to be sanctioned.

Using an ISR plane to carry passengers and VIPs is a gross abuse and flagrant unprofessionalism. It will take years before another one can be made available. The company that makes this plane has a backlog of orders. So in effect, Nigeria's fight against terrorists has suffered a serious setback.
